      Basically they're betting on you not actually taking them to court over it. Aka they simply don't care what the legal status is, until someone slaps them with a serious fine per violation. Thus the law that says it's not legal, is effectively worthless.

    Perhaps someone below already brought this to your attention, but I'll mention it again in case no one has: A 'silent,' fan-less machine w/decent specs would be quite wonderful in a home/project studio environment, esp. in situations where desktop space is at a premium, there is no separate control room or some recording is done regularly in the same room w/the computer. In my case, I have a 2014 Mac Mini. It's way under-powered compared to the NUC and takes up a noticeable chunk or real estate. (Having something like this project would be AMAZING for me. I'm hoping to get funds together and build one in the next year or two.)

    Followed instructions but deviated by using the NUC8i7BEH and a 2 TB SSD (fits on included bracket above mobo) for storing music, creating a Roon music server under Mojave OS.
    Build only uses Ethernet connection (there is no WiFi/BT; left disabled). Only running Roon app 24/7 (screen saver turned off since normally using without a monitor or mouse or keyboard). Computer is configured to auto log on boot, then auto run Roon (Roon controlled by iPhone app through WiFi router/Ethernet connection).
    CPU temps run 36 to 40°C with unit sitting on a tiled floor (case is barely warm). The NVMe drive (with own heat sink as instructed) and SSD give temps of 34 to 36°C. So the cooling is excellent for all parts. These temps should provide many years of longevity. The whole unit uses just under 5W of power; very efficient. (All data from HWMonitorSMC2, using VirtualSMC + associated kexts.)
    This is a fantastic build. Thanks SnazzyLabs!

    If I'm not mistaken NVMe SSDs shouldn't stay excessively cool when running because that actually shortens their lifespan: while writing to them, the heat reduces damage to the cells and many manufacturers add heating elements to ensure that the cells are warm enough while performing a write.
    In this case it was probably a good idea to put a heatsink on it since there is no active cooling but in traditional desktop cases where you have fans, it's more than enough to keep an NVMe drive at a good temperature and adding a heat spreader will do more harm than good.

    I followed the link for the Akasa Turing Case and it went to Amazon Japan and it's listed at 60,580 Yen or USD$560 thereabouts. Once you add that expense in, it's significantly closer to the Mac Mini. Also, I have an 8i3BEK, and one of the things I prize a lot for the NUC is its small form factor. The case immediately nullifies that at an additional US$560. I'm not sure how many folks would make this trade off for a totally silent NUC which, if you're not stressing it, it not very loud anyway.

    11:05 " and that's it" well not quite, there is a lot of trial and error a lot frustration, and you also have to patch a DSDT file to make sure that the "drivers" are enabled to work, I am posting this comment from a hackintosh right now and my headphone jack still doesn't work, it all depends on the model of computer you decide to hackintosh and the type of computer, you decide to hackintosh, the intel NUC seems quite easy to hackintosh, that is because it is, but if you try to modify any other "non-modular" system it could be much, much harder. Was able to get a MacBook Air for $350 off of eBay. I5 from 2017. Screen was damaged but able to run it with a normal external monitor. Fits the bill and much easier to maintain than a hackintosh. Might try fixing the monitor for $80 at some point down the road. This is a nice rig but I’m not so sure I would invest that much in a hackintosh given that installing updates can be a headache and you are missing Bluetooth and WiFi.

    I may go hackintosh the next build. I had a 2011 mac book pro, I did some upgrades to it, 16gb ram from 8gb, took out the cd drive and replaced both the hard drive and cd drive with 2 ssd's 512 gb, etc. I only run logic pro x on it, it was fine. I then upgrade to the latest macbook pro BEFORE the touchbar, and that's a 2015 model, it's great. Has 16 GB ram, 3.6 ghz cpu and 512 gb storage. Biggest difference is it has 2 USB 3.0 ports, an hdmi port and 2 thunderbolt ports (which I don't use). I keep dual externals that are mirrored on 1 usb 3.0 port and it's fast as hell.
    Eventually, I guess I'll upgrade. The problem I have is I'm locked into Logic Pro X for so many projects, I can't just dump it and go to say Ableton (a much much more expensive platform, and frankly a piece of crap in comparison I think). The issue I have with Hackintosh's is you basically have to build one out, then you have to make sure you clone that drive before you upgrade - or you might lose everything. Also obtaining mac software is a pain, and you can't just update it via app store etc. Maybe things have changed, but this was 2 years ago last I tried a hackintosh, dunno.

    Looking at 14:05 mark, if you upgrade to 16GB memory yourself on the Mac Mini, that's $140 off. And then run an external 1TB SSD, that'll save you another $305. That's $445 off bringing the mac mini down to $1255, which is about $400 more than the NUC, but is an original Mac with better CPU.

    That thermal paste application, it is fine but it is not pretty. :P
    Ideally you want it as thin as possible but 100% coverage, thermal paste conducts heat less well than metal on metal, it only serves to get a smooth surface because smooth metal is not a smooth as it looks like, the more fluid paste bridges the gaps. (the last part is not aimed at Snazzy Labs, he knows this)
    But it shouldn't make a bigger difference than a few degrees C so it is fine for this sytem and purpose. Also this for who doesn't know, in the case of conducting material like liquid metal and some thermal pastes you really don't want to spill over the sucket (or over the GPU surface in the case of a graphics card) but most thermal pastes don't conduct electricity so all that happened with that crude application is that the layer got a bit too thick and he probably prefers too thick over risking not 100% coverage which makes sense.
    LOL@ that The Verge Stefan snapshot.

      No he can't I don't think, apple uses Intel, he's piggybacking of the work of apple to make there software run on an Intel CPU.
      I could be totally wrong, but Mac OS wasn't meant for AMD CPUs, or it's been a while at least, and there isn't that "base working instruction set".

    • @brianhedley5139
      @brianhedley5139 5 лет назад

      Its probably possible as the Hackintosh community has a kernel that works with AMD. However Final Cut Pro X uses Intel Quick Sync so although it will work most likely rendering is video is not going to be any faster but other things might be. Considering most Hackintoshes are used primarily for FCPX or Logic Pro X you may gain speed in certain areas but not all

    Despite this whole operation was about getting rid of the sound from the fan - that comparison was left out. I have several Mac Mini and one thing that really doesn't bother me about them is the sound. Trading Bluetooth, Airdrop and the SD slot for a box twice the size seems a big trade-off for getting rid of the fan.

    • @ChrisHuelsbeckOfficial
      @ChrisHuelsbeckOfficial 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, I'd just go for the NUC as built... saves even more money... that tiny fan can't be that loud and if you place the little computer correctly (and maybe on a sound deadening pad) you'll probably never hear the fan.

    The SD card slot seems like a huge oversight on the design. One ribbon cable to full SD Card, and a small modification of the case design and manufacturing later and you would have a functional SD card reader. Which, knowing that one of the reasons for mac is Final Cut Pro and that you need to import media, doesn't seem like a bad addition.

    I will admit I'm an unapologetic hackintosh gatekeeper. I really don't like how mainstream hackintoshing is becoming. Apple is definitely taking notice. I'm sure they are accelerating their plans for macOS to become like iOS. i.e. only usable on specialized hardware/processors with a bunch of security chips. I don't want that.
    Hackintoshing is an extremely nerdy passtime, and as people like Linus and Quinn (as much as I love them) try to make it easy for people to hackintosh, the people that want a free Mac experience will jump in without realizing how much legwork they will have to put in on their own to get there.
    For every 1 person that's willing to put in the work (of whom I have helped several through the process

    Probably can't overclock because of power requirements that would be needed to. Like VRM on the motherboard needs to be high enough quality to provide solid clean power to the CPU. Also the PSU is going to be much smaller than a desktop PC as well. Thermal is probably the least of the worries when overclocking a NUC.

    I’ve actually been thinking of doing a Linux build on a nuc. To do all the work for a hackintosh doesn’t seem worth it.. and I’m a Mac user. I didn’t realize how underpowered the minis really were until I was doing some work with photos from an external thunderbolt drive on my 2014 mini and moved it to my 2015 rMBP and saw the performance jump- both 16GB RAM similar spec... and all I was doing was getting rid of duplicate photos.

    Sweet Video!I want to upgrade my macbook pro, but Apple hasn't been very good bridging the value gap between: older macs, or hackintosches, and Powerhouse PC desktops- Not to mention the scissor keyboard. Older Imacs still seem to be the value leader to get that sweet macos fix. I am loving those nucs though. The biggest downside for me is security updates.
