Didn't Paganini compose these Caprices for his own fun? Seriously, who plays this for fun?! I'm not too shabby a violinist, but I draw the line at Paganini! Holy moly!
@The SeryTy I literally just had a play through of that. Not impossible for me to learn (and play it well)... but difficult as all hell!!! Lots of trickery in there where some passages are actually easier than what they appear. Then there are fleeting moments which are almost impossible to perform well haha. A BRILLIANT mix of Paganini's techniques!
Something I just learned today is that Paganini actually had a genetic condition which caused his fingers to be much longer (like probably 60% larger) than most people's, which is why he was able to perform stuff of this caliber. Those intervals would be a piece of cake for his lengthy fingers. Also helps that he had incredible virtuosity with the instrument.
Some medical expert suspect Pagani had Marfan(sic) syndrome. They can be extremely tall, Pagani was about 6'4", nearly every joint is double jointed, and usually above average intelligence.
The great difficulty, in my opinion, is to achieve an "Andante" feeling paying attention to the low notes instead of each 32nd note. The main feeling should be the quarter notes, each harmony, and the 32nd notes, like in slow movementes from Beethoven's Sonatas, with 128th notes not with virtuoso character.
I think this is exactly how Paganini would've wanted to hear it performed!!!! Not too fast, not many ritardandi, nice timbre. This is my favourite recording now. I used to love Perlman's as my no.1 but I find it too fast now. It's still great of course!
Time signature is Andante (not prestissimo). If you slow down the tempo, you can’t do ricochet like Accardo does here. You must work the bow on the staccato technique, which is really not the same. Funnily enough, in the end, the slower you go, the more technically demanding it gets. And also more musically interesting, but this part is just my opinion 😊
I’m afraid I must disagree with you here. I mean, in any tempo this caprice would be “musically interesting” because, besides being a virtuoso, Paganini was also, as you know, a brilliant composer with a pension for lovely yet sophisticated and original melodies! But to me, this melody relies on smoothness and flow, to trickle down upon the ears like a playful little waterfall. It’s dazzling to play, but quite gentle and almost soothing to listen to. I think that mentality would be lost in a slower tempo even with the most brilliant violinist playing it. The only way I could see it work if it was played legato rather than staccato as you mention, with smooth notes filled with little hints of vibrato, flowing from one dynamic to the next, almost dance like in attitude. Im curious to know what you think about this?
Sight reading won’t be something that is achievable, unless you want to play much slower than intended, which is the case for most sight readings, but all of his caprices are top level difficulty, so even if you become a master you won’t sight read them to perfection.
THE DEVIL: Alright, boy, I'll bet a Stradivarius against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you. PAGANINI: Alright, try this one out, I wrote it yesterday. *Hands him a music sheet* THE DEVIL: What in Heaven's name is this? Never mind, I forfeit.

In terms of the violin, it's akin to letting the bow bounce off the strings in a controlled manner so as to successfully emulate the style that Paganini requires for this caprice.

Mitsuo _ I don’t think his fingers were longer, per se, but rather had a far greater dexterity than the average hands through his deformity.
