I have to admit, you had me the first 60 seconds. I was thinking "Ah, I remember going to the beach in the morning and dropping LSD, thinking about space, talking to myself about space, my place in space, my space in my place..."
Can't fault you for plugging the event though. If I wasn't saving up for the photography side of things (this is an expensive hobby), I'd be there. I like Australia. Got to spend a couple of months there. Giant chess in Hyde Park was amazing. Good luck on the talk. Remember to tell them all about how life is meaningless and we're all going to die.

I wish I were able to attend. Best of luck with the program - it's a fantastic idea.
I live in the countryside near a small town in northern Michigan, US. It's a bortle 2 or 3 zone all over around here, but I have students who live in town (a blistering bortle 5) who still have never seen the Milky Way. They just don't understand what they're taking for granted... Luckily I get to drag them out to a dark sky park for a nighttime viewing once in a while. :-)

Dylan, we'd love to speak to you about being invited to next year's event, if possible. My wife and I appreciate your content and have for about 5 years now (on my other channel). A toy telescope saved my life, so we built a charity to help others who are struggling through stargazing and astrophotography. Our mission (using astronomy to help uplift mental wellness), is small but mighty. I'd love to share our story and connect with you and possibly give a 5+ minute talk, or be a part of the event in any way, even as an attendee. Thanks for what you do, and as a young astronomer (34yo), I really love the freshness and humor you bring to this lifestyle/hobby. You rock man. ✌️
With your permission, I'll comment our website so you can check it out and connect if you wish. Let me know, thanks!

Thank you for your reply and appreciate your videos. Now taking photos of the moon with my Celestron 120mmX1000mm refractor and the results are very pleasing even with a 2X barlow. Think about space and and the next project the planets. So many towns and cities think nothing of the light pollution destroying the night sky. From the 81yro in July from Kingman AZ.

  • @chanwheeler8296

Every day I check the night sky conditions. Living in Connecticut I average 2-3 decent observing nights per month. When I go to sleep I turn on my planetarium. So, I think about the universe every day, read relevant science findings and youtube blogs, am filled with wonder about how much we do not know. James Webb is amazing at opening new queries.

Well, I think about space since I was a kid and I never understood why most people are simply not aware of what the Earth is and where we are in the universe. Now, whenever the clouds are not over me (which is very rarely in the area where I live in Brazil), I'm trying some new DSO. I introduced myself to AP a year ago and I love it.

If I could have my way, I would like it if human beings would look at themselves as beings that lived on a planet together. Put our focus on ways to improve all of our lives and improve our planet. I love when I hear we are made of stardust. When I look up at the night sky...on a clear moonless night it still takes my breathe away. It is when I'm sure there is a higher power that exists and it takes my breathe away. The night sky has fascinated mankind since we first looked up. One of my Sons first words was moon. He was a baby and wasn't talking much. We were driving around at night doing errands. I said where should we go now? He pointed at the sky to the beautiful round moon and said moon!!! It still is one of my favorite memories.

I'm a Leo. On the day I was born 2 planets slammed into each other and gave birth to Jupiter. The moons of those 2 planets went out to Saturn and hit it and caused it to ram into Neptune and Mercury, thereby ending astrology. No Mercury retrograding into the 7th house anymore. At least that's how my mother told the story. But we still have astronomy. It's above all that light pollution that gets worse every day.

Ah, shucks. Really. I would love to attend but its not in the cards (or stars). Love the idea and would be cool to visit your area sometime. You are right; not only do most people live in areas they can't see the Milky Way or even many stars, they rarely look UP. Maybe some people notice a nice sunset or sunrise or some interesting clouds, but most look out and down at their feet.

Wish I could be there with you Dylan...I'm too far away under the dissapointing light polluted unsettled weather skies of the UK. Thinking about it... if one day I took a trip to Australia how could I maximise my stay there to see the skies without falling into tourist traps. Would be nice to get access to share viewing of professional equipment.. and get some data. I have a Celestron 9.25inch scope and Skywatcher Eq6 R pro... and high end amateur equipment... ( but not a observatory like yours :-) ) Its all not very portable and a bit expensive to transport... lol. I love astrophotography... shame I have no access to see the beautiful objects of the southern skies. I am aware of remote viewing like itelescope but do not like running subscription services... I'm a bit nervous as I'm a bit old school. I wonder if somehow you can buy as a one of payment data for particular objects such as Large Magellanic Cloud..with cal data and then process the data myself?? Your a lucky guy living out there...keep the great videos coming

... actually I'd love to attend, but I'm a poor farm boy living in the States, so the chances of swinging that trip within a month aren't good. Maybe next year tho! Looking forward to all the great astro content that comes from the event.

We're in election mode here in the UK and I wish our politicians would think a bit more about space, then perhaps they would realise how insignificant they really are in the great scheme of things and stop prancing round with inflated egos and actually do something that makes our little planet a better place. They can start by stopping wasting millions on powering the lighting of buildings and roads in the middle of the night when it's unnecessary. When I was a kid sixty years ago the Milky Way was really impressive from where I live, especially after midnight when the street lights were turned off. Now patches of it are just about visible on a clear moonless night during August and September, but at least there are some dark sky sites not too far away where people can still be awed by the night sky. All the best for your meeting, I hope the skies stay clear for you.
