Amazing Grace - Closure of the show
Additional comments: One of the most well-known concerts of Dire Straits. Wembley Stadium on 11th June 1988 was the venue for a unique gathering of musicians and performers from all over the world who under the banner of Artists Against Apartheid paid tribute to Nelson Mandela for his 70th Birthday. An audience estimated to be well over half a billion people in some 63 countries participated in an event with a simple compelling message: "Free Nelson Mandela". Dire Straits appeared as the closing act of that unforgettable day with Eric Clapton on the second guitar. Until today, it was probably the most important and powerful concert in the Dire Straits history. This version has been made with the best versions I have come across, including the complete intro by Billy Connolly who finishes his intro after two minutes with the words: "Ladies and gentlemen, with a happy heart and a tear in either eye: Dire Straits!". The closure of the show is also included with Jessye Norman singing Amazing Grace.
A must-have for all fans! Видеоклипы
That sax solo in Romeo & Juliet deserves to be in the rock and roll hall of fame
You should see the Eurythmics sax solos (and harmonica solos) by Jimmy Zavala during this same concert. Never seen anything like it, ever.
watched this show whenever it was broadcast live and still have it somewhere on a VHS what a set they played that night
I completely agree!
I have been listening to that epic sax solo nearly every day since then. Count yourself how many times this could be! 😏
It still blows me away!
@@stefanchaziparaskevas8034 " Absolutely amazing Piece of Saxophone 🎷 Playing it still gives me the chills all these years after seeing for the first time whenever it was Broadcast live on the BBC 🎷👍🎤🎸
Imagine having Clapton as your rythum guitarist 👍👏👏👏
In fairness, Mark served as Clapton's rhythm guitarist on Clapton's tour that fall.
@@TheJohnnyCotts Yep I saw them at the Royal Albert Hall in September (I think) of that year. Ray Cooper on percussion too... awesome gig.
11 June 2023. 35 years later.
I was there with my best friend and my late Mum and Dad.
What a day it was.
Mark and Eric are like brothers in Guitars, what a lovely performance , nowadays everything is different ,
It is really a shame we don’t have bands like this now
Terry Williams - what an absolute machine on the drums. Loved this when I was a teenager and still do!
Such a shame "beast" Terry Williams got sidelined for the last DS tour. I much preferred him over Danny Cummings.
Totally agree... what this guy made in Alchemy is absolutely stunning... HE took the drums to the same level as the guitar
@@leocmen absolutely agree. He was a machine, a monster and THE motor of the powerful Alchemy and Brother in Arms Tour concerts. I still prefer that era (and the way the DS songs were played, with superb contributions by Terry Williams and Alan Clark) over the On Every Street Tour. That last tour was BTW the only DS tour I've seen live, 2 times in Rotterdam, Ahoy and De Kuip (which is actually on On The Night), having become a fan just as the BIA tour has passed my country.
As far as I know Danny was never the drummer for DS. Chris Whitten was the drummer on the OES tour. Danny was the percussionist. Danny did play drums for Mark Knopfler on some solo albums and tours.
This is one of the best live performances of all time. There's one little moment that sums it up, Knopflers reaction to the crowd going mental at the Money for Nothing intro whilst one of the best guitarists in the World casually stands behind him playing backing rifts
❤️ ❤️ Best of #DireStraits with #EricClapton Both are very good musicians and best guitar players if the 80ties. #Backtothe80ties with #Musicwelove 💕 💕
Playing rhythm
And this casually standing backing guitarist between 34:03 and 34:11 plays 6 notes that make it one of the best renditions ever. This 1st small tiny lick is just a masterpiece. It sound so good in Mark's riff.
@@marieannkamp1924 Very good? Knopfler and Clapton are 2 of the greatest guitarists of all time

Que eles tenham se encontrado num bom lugar! 😢

Nearly 33 years ago and still one of if not the best sets ever sorry to say but the bands of today dont seem to have that magic
35 years ago to the day! Amazing memories of the greatest band ever!
Hi mate. I remember being there like it was yesterday. Brilliant day
Totally agree propa musicians bk thn... Best part we was there to see it we was born in the best generation... Dnt b sad its over be happy it happend
Marvellous ❤
Brothers in arms..

Mark's guitar here, the Pensa-Suhr MK1, which he was playing for the first time was hastly made in New York by John Suhr, days before the concert, and made especially for this performance. Suhr was concerned the lacquer wouldn't set properly and would get damaged in flight from New York, such was the rush in getting it made.
Mark would go on to use the guitar on the next Dire Straits album in 1991. The guitar was auctioned at Christie's on the 31st January 2024 and sold for £504k
My absolute favourite rendition of Sultans of Swing. 14 years old when it was broadcast. When it wasn't cool to like your dads music. I had to secretly play his VHS recording of this when no one was in the house! Wonderful!!
In my opinion it comes nowhere close to the Alchemy live performance.
This was a year before i was born but I grew up to all this. I was the 8 year old dj playing at my mums parties in the 90s. What a childhood I had. Could of been so much better if I was 20 years older.
One of the best performances of all times! Clapton and Knopfler are incredible 🙌👏👏👏
I was there that night, at the front, was absolutely amazing, no one knew Eric was performing with them til he came on!!
👌
They did a warm up gig at Hammersmith Odeon during the week before, those of us who were there knew that EC was depping…🙂
19:30 that's the moment and I captured It! It's the climax, the exact moment of the fusion among planet Earth and universe all in one. The instant in which also the stars are shining and clapping Mark to be a genius and create an unique and divine masterpiece like "Sultans of Swing". Thank you Mark to exist and Thank you god to give me the opportunity to live in this era and grow listening all the songs of Dire Straits. Greetings from Italy to everybody
Mark refers to those as "the Twidly bits"...😉
Fitting tribute to Mark 🎉🎉🎉
That Little change in the solo is tremendous !
❤❤sempre grandemitico Mark è bello vederti e sentirti suonare❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dire Straits finest moment . Unforgettable
This was the best Dire Straits Concert ever, I remember seeing it live in 1988, I have still got it on VHS tape, Iconic Concert for a Great Man, R.I.P. Nelson Mandela, you can listen in Heaven.
People would pay a few bucks for the VHS Version not gonna lie. If you have this on VHS, does this mean you have live aid on VHS? haha
Banda Maravillosa.Mark será siempre el mejor de todos los TIEMPOS.❤😂.
No its NOT their best concert ever! You haven't seen much then. 🙄🙄
Eric clapton is still playing 90 minute sets live to this day in his 80s xx
Listen to Clapton in the background. He adds so much to each song. Great rhythm guitarist!
Let's be honest, Clapton is a fantastic guitarist full stop.
@@leighburne4098 Absolutely agree.
God is God
i agree. Eric is doing far more than strumming a basic rhythm. Listen to 'Brothers in Arms' using good quality headphones, and you will hear Eric's guitar through the right channel.
The best ever version of Sultans!

Yes no doubt,is magic
Agreed!
While Alchemy is much more powerful this one is soo clean and the slow down part is more nuanced imo.
Plus it has a piano and Sax solo!
However both versions are unbelievably good.
27:10 one of the greatest sax solos of all time IMO
Definitely, I keep coming back after years!!
Yes absolutely incredible. So soulful. You can see the whole band enjoying it. So much passion put into every note. Saxophone can be a bit naff but he blew the roof off the joint
Chris White was fabulous
Ja, ich war schon 1988 fasziniert von diesem Konzert und diesem Solo. Jetzt sitze ich hier mit 68 Jahren in meinem Sessel und bin schon wieder tief bewegt von dieser Meisterschaft.
Chris White,SUPERHUMAN

Fantastic..
I must give three mentions....Chris White's sax solo in Romeo and Juliet, Welshman Terry William's stunning drumming performance and Jesse Norman's lovely song at the end. All so so amazing.
For me the best live performance I have ever ever seen 🎸😍
You know, in 1988 imagine this: TV sound was still MONO - at least where we lived at the time. To the rescue, radio stations transmitted the concert sound live, in parallel and in STEREO. I happened to start my tape recorder and watched and listened in awe. This recording then became my most listened-to tape. I later lost the recording during moving for university etc. Thanks to RUclips and your re-mastering efforts, one of the best live concerts ever is not lost anymore, for everyone to enjoy. The same glitches of stadium sound technology (short humming after Walk of Life - “Thank you” etc.). Note on the side: imagine any similar political engagement today, in times of COVID and wannabe-dictators in many countries...? - quite some different time...
I did EXACTLY the same, as a 12 year old lad!! Listened to the tape for years growing up and know every note of it. That one day changed my life and kick-started my songwriting. Still get tingles...
Nice perspective, think we take modern r cording and transmission for granted at times
me too.
Me too
I taped it off-the-air in the Summer of 1988. It was 'simulated' stereo! - phase-shifting and EQ added to make it sound like stereo. SO nice to hear this is REAL stereo!
I watched this as kid with my Dad and he recorded it (VHS). I wore that video down! Such a brilliant performance, that moment where Knopfler goes to the mic during Brothers In Arms to say something, reflects, looks out and says nothing stayed with me all these years later.
1988: I (15 then) was glued to our family TV having them all pissed off to occupy our TV and watch the whole concert live... at the time in mono, recorded on the FM radio in stereo on cassette tape. Then, after a couple of years, I lost my favourite music tape. Until RUclips came along. Thank you for remastering - much much valued!
I was there in direct, i had 18. It was a great concert.
This is the climax of beauty and perfection. Watched it live and recorded it on VHS.
Me too. One of the bests concerts ever!
What is amazing is the amount of respect Clapton has for Knopfler considering a decade before anyone knew who Mark was Eric was close to replacing George Harrison in the Beatles. Shows that talent is recognised by genius's.
He wasn't really. It was an off the cuff comment from Lennon when Harrison walked out of the dreadful Twickenham Sessions. There is however no doubt that had he not returned they would have asked him to join - and of course Lennon tapped him up for the makeshift 'Plastic Ono Band' performance in Toronto having already played together on Rock n' Roll Circus and during the White Album.
One of the best live concerts - this is the best sound quality of all the versions out there. I know this set like the back of my hand and not sure why additional crowd cheering has been added to Brothers In Arms - it does not need it. Nonetheless, brilliant.
i love this drummer
@terrywilliams
@@jackoherts freaking genius. He MAKES this performance. What should I know about him?
Not taking Terry Williams on their final tour a few years after this was a clanger. One of the best stadium/arena drummers ever.
Bill Putney So true!!!
Total beast!
Chris Whitten did a great job to be fair
Terry quit the group right after this concert.... MK disbanded the band one month later for several years...Williams was amazing but Dire Straits never had a bad drummer . they were all incredible musicians
@@hilogreg5216 TW says he was waiting for the call for the final tour but it never came. Jack Sonni also said the same.

I’ve listened to this a hundred times and still get chills seeing Mark and Eric together. Absolutely amazing!!!
I remember a summer night almost 30 years ago, a party with friends and playing this music ,,, the memory of the past, divine treasure
I've followed dire straits since the late 70s and this was them at their best. Just amazing and mr Clapton should have been with em from the start after this performance. Just stunning. Marks solo on brothers in arms just brings tears to my eyes as you can tell it means the world to him to play it on this occasion
I was there and can honestly say it was the best set i have ever hurd pure magic knopfler at the top of his game one of them moments of music history that i will never foget it was a privilege to witness the only other band to be up there is queen
