  • Here's an F1 onboard lap at the old Laguna Seca circuit that was used between 1957-1987, remaining almost identical throughout that time period. Running at 3.058 km (1.900 mi), the track has always been notable for its downhill plunging "Corkscrew" turn, one of the most recognisable turns in the world. Nowadays, the circuit features IndyCar and IMSA races in the modern layout.
This Formula 1 hotlap is driven in Assetto Corsa with Logan Sargeant in the F1 2023 Williams FW45.

Old circuits fell always like curved dragstrips with 3 deathtraps as turns, racing has changed a lot

that last curve is a killing one!

Did you know that before being a race track. the Laguna road was a military base where soldiers would learn how the affectionately known deuce and a half (2.5 tonne) Army truck. Driving UP the Corkscrew without stalling was one of the final tests.

So strange to see Laguna Seca in old version. Looks like many tracks in same years - many smooth turns

If you try to race an old car on one of those old tracks, it makes way more sense. The race cars of that time were way slower, had terrible brakes and almost no traction compared to today's cars, so any slight curve you would easily do flatout in any car today, with those old ones you would've to lift off the accelerator or even brake so it doesn't end up sliding off the track.
When you race on a track from the 60's with a modern F1 car, you always end up missing some of the complexity that the races had back in the day.

    Doesn't feel like LS…
    Corkscrew: Hello there.
    Yep, this is LS.

Video: Uses Logan Sargeant and shows a graphic at the start that reads, "Length: 3.058 km."

Well I've got a grin a mile wide.
Thanks you mitsos for that very familiar blast from the past. By the mid-sixties things started to get less cluttered around the track and Armco barriers started springing up.
As is well known the track was expanded not for auto racing but to meet the FIM requirements in track length to bring the U.S.MotoGP to LS.

I would LOVE to see F1 at Laguna Seca. Sadly that won't happen for a lot of reasons.

this time older Laguna Seca is 600m shorter though. The part after turn 1 had a hole punched into it and the last two turns were moved a little futher from the start/finish line (other changes made like turn 4 of this layout made sharper or the pitlane moved to the inside don't really change its length)

I'm surprised Gran Turismo never had this layout (though I'm surprised this exists), but then I have no idea if the road is still there

Having no idea what the old layout was and not looking at the track map yet, felt obliged to tense up a little with how fast the car was being thrown into the hairpin at the start of the lap.

So basically part of the track is skipped with a shortcut, pit lane on the right rather than left, and some minor track changes here and there. Of course it’s greener due to climate change
