  • Can a super naked that costs $18,000 really be worth the money? Yup, and here’s why.

    Favorites & Fails is exactly what the name suggests, a concise list of the good and bad for the bikes we’re riding. This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive evaluation or road test, but rather a candid snapshot, delivered with the same sincerity and honesty we’d show to a friend that wanted our opinion on a given bike. Hopefully you find it helpful or at least informative. Don’t agree with us, or have a motorcycle you want us to put through the F&F wringer? Feel free to chime in below in the comments section.

    When you ride as many different motorcycles as we do it gives you good perspective on a given bike’s strengths and weaknesses. And whether you’re shopping for your next bike or just want to be in the know, it’s helpful to get an experienced rider’s opinion. So as a quick way to convey the highs and lows of the bikes we’ve been riding we came up with this new video series. Favorites & Fails is exactly what the name suggests, a concise list of the good and bad for the bikes we’re riding.

    Brother in 2017 when you did the KTM 1290 Super Duke Review in Qatar, After that review this Bike became The Dream Bike! On July 17, 2017 My Wife got me this Bike. It’s April 10th On the Island of Hawaii (Big Island) and I have 19,000 Miles on my SDR. Your correct! It’s hands down THE BEST NAKED BIKE IN THE WORLD...Dum Dums like Cycle Cruza have zero Idea. KTM has been amazing with every little issue, I came up with. Down to the Sun damage to the buttons, KTM replaced the entire left hand cluster. KTM’s Reliability amazing. If your ever In Hawaii let me know, I’ll be your tour guide and my 1290 is yours to see the Island with. GREAT HONEST REVIEW! Aloha Nui

      The only dum dums are the ones who FAIL to actually ready the KTM warranty terms: *"This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm. No other components of the motorcycle are covered by any warranty, expressed or implied and are sold “as is."*
      However, I might still buy one to share the experience on my channel like I did for the Ducati XDiavel S that I sold a few months ago.

      I live in EU maybe that makes a difference, but... I got a new radiator and a display changed on warranty which is why I bought the extended warranty - because stuff got replaced on time. Don't now if I got lucky or simply have a good dealer but I had no warranty issues so far (Owning a duke 690 for 3 years now). I still have my trust issues with the bike but I just have to say that the fun factor makes up for all potential problems. Keeping all this in mind I would be carefull buying a 15k + bike that needs special care and treatment, everybody has to decide on their own if it's worth it.

      @@CycleCruza His point was that KTM service has been top notch even without the warranty coverage..I have an '18 300 XCW and a '19 390 Duke and they're both great..This 1290R would be a nice step-up for me.. :)

      @Jakalwarrior 6 лет назад +4

      For less money its better to keep the stock headers, get a slip on, delete cat, and get an airbox. Either motohooligan or rottweiler. A lot more bang for your buck. The header doesn't do much. The airbox adds a big chunk of mid range and adds to the sound especially for the rider.

      2016 mv agusta brutale 800 dragster owner here. Amazing bike. Yes it has its problems, like all italian bikes do, yes its pretty expensive, but damn its pretty as hell, fast and has amazing brakes and suspension. So the price is somewhat justified.

    • @beamdoctor5637
      @beamdoctor5637 6 лет назад

      Modern Italian maintained bikes don't have any more problems than Japanese bikes. I will agree it may cost more for parts. My 2 Ducatis have had just normal wear and tear maintenance. My Aprilia Mille never a problem. Just tires, brakes pads, and battery

    • @MakTheSank
      @MakTheSank 6 лет назад +1

      It's true, italian manufacturers came a long way, the multistrada 1200 has many miles between services and valve check but still not as reliable as japanese bikes and the parts are pretty expensive. For me it is worth buying an italian bike, they are very carefully designed and they have feisty personalities !

    I put myself deeply in debt (€14k) just to be able to buy one. I had to have it. Worked my ass off and made smart investments over the next 5 years (since 2018) to pay it off. Finally paid off in April this year. The Superduke is an excellent example of a good-at-everything bike. I personally found only the suspension left me wanting better. The bike responds incredibly well to the Akrapovic system and ECU mapping. You don't need it for the speed but it gets rid of the government mandated emissions stuff, and the result is so much smoother acceleration and much improved sound. In track mode with the quickshifter, you basically have a motorcycle for life. You just can't get enough of it.

    As an owner of the bike, my biggest gripe is the nanny stuff. I'm ok with that in street mode, but sport mode should give you what you ask for. Slowing the rate to mimic a conservative throttle cam is ok, but, but 100% throttle should always snap the butterflies all the way open.

    Love the videos as always! Do the Tuone next! After riding a Tuone, I had to buy one (2 actually) but I often wonder, if I had had the opportunity to test a Super Duke, would I have gone the KTM way instead. The S Duke is an impossible bike to get a test ride on. Maybe someday I'll have both...Lol.

    • @joeridestrijcker445
      @joeridestrijcker445 6 лет назад +1

      I actually do own both; both have way more performance than you can use on the street; for cruising and lazying about, the KTM is much better... more comfort (no idea what's blocking the wind, but it feel like I'm behind a screen), maybe twice the mileage, but feels much less refined. The V4 of the Tuono is one eargasm after the other while feeling like it's running on whipped cream... where the KTM is more like a hugely fast tractor. I'm short and stocky, I prefer the KTM for street riding because less weight on my wrists... haven't taken it to the track yet. Tuono at the track is SO much fun! On the street the Tuono is causing me frustration, like it needs and wants to go faster without relaxing... the KTM allows slow cruising and has much better low rpm fueling too. Try one back to back with the Aprilia, you'll also feel the differences ;)

    I had the RC8R. It is bar none the greatest, most communicative chassis I have ever ridden on the track. That trellis frame is absolutely brilliant and it crushes me that the market, and KTM, gave up on the RC8R because it had the potential to be brilliant with a more competitive engine. Please KTM, bring back a trellis frame superbike and put a strong motor with proper electronics in it!

      Motorcyclist Magazine gives the rear wheel figures they've measured on the dyno whereas manufacturers typically quote crank hp numbers (unless stated otherwise). The link to their dyno run is in the video description (to be precise they measured 154.66 bhp at 9960 rpm, and 92.55 ft lbs at 7390 rpm on their dynojet dyno). 10-15% drivetrain loss is pretty typical, although some manufacturers have been known to exaggerate while others will understate their power.

    • @attackcat109
      @attackcat109 6 лет назад +1

      honestly it would depend on the person, like economically 20k is a lot for the bike, let alone any bike, but like he said its a premium bike. If you had 6figues a year i don't see why you'd get a 5k bike over a 20k bike other than your person tastes. If the money isn't an issue, bringing it up kinda doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but if it is an issue you already know 20k is out of range so what's the point of asking. You know?

Started on a R6 then R1 then M1 and now the 1290. I’ll always have a 1290 in the garage for the rest of my days. Had a 16 special edition, sold it after 2 months. Everything was upgraded, but just couldn't get comfortable, the seat was just not made for me i guess. I also pumped another grand or so into a decat link pipe for a better sound and a new airbox and a few other bits. Sitching gears felt like riding a tractor trailer, not to mention how many times i'd miss a gear. In the end, traded it in for a '17 tuono and couldn't be happier. By far the superior bike in my opinion.

    • @doubleud2140
      @doubleud2140 6 лет назад

      aluisious nope, put on about 4000kms in that time. I really wanted to like it. I got a great deal on it and like I said I even put over an extra grand into it, hoping it would feel better. Just didn't like, I came off a triumph street triple, which likes to rev high, and this bike tips out at like 9000rpm. Just didn't feel fast to me. On the tuono, you really feel the speed, and the sound is incredible. I never liked the sound of the sdr. Again, this is all just my opinion based on personal experience. The bike had just over 7000kms when I traded it. I think it should've been broken in by then, either way I wasn't going to wait around till it did.

    I've owend the 2014 SDR1290. Sellingpoints are as discribed in video. I would add the supermoto ABS to the list (every manufacturer should add this in my opinion). Negatives: (1) brakes on my 2014 were no good. (2) Fact that you need to pay for electronic update/map to get full power is not OK in my book. (3) Vague feedback in corners from suspension was not confidence inspiring... but the wheelies kept it in my garage for 5 years ;-) Just made the switch to a 2019 Tuono factory (because of the negatives above and the V4).

    It took the record in Pikes Peak heavy class! Beautiful machine! Would love if MCM made a comparison with SD R and SD GT. Or MT-10 tourer and SD GT.

    KTM has potential to take over the world, they just need to expand their range and make some bikes for the everyman as well. I love the way they engineer their bikes but they’re all very over the top. Not everyone is into that created-by-a-mad-scientist style of bike

    i bought a 2015 new back in 2015. I have it modded to the max and am still way below that 18k price. I personally would rather have the 15 or 16 year. been reading bad stories on the keyless fob, the dash can't be seen in sunlight, jumps back and forth from night time to daytime. issues with getting the 17 and 18's mapped and it has the stupid servo on the exhaust to deal with. it does have cruise but for the cons not worth it imho. the engines are awesome for sure. I had a Buell xb12 supertt prior and for fun it was close just not the power. handling though the Buell was just as good. Most fun bike and I been riding street for 45 years!

    It's so hard to choose which is better, MV Agusta Brutale or KTM 1290 SDR. I'm having MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR Dragster (Hmm, I couldnt get a best price choice in my country). I almost like KTM 1290 SDR and the fail of it, I think, to my opinion that I can't find an exhaust which has a good sound (affective and strong, exp: like Kawasaki Z1000 which Vance & Hines Exhaust). The price of it is worth with many amazing things KTM gave to their users.
    Btw, this is the good vid.

    The 2020 1290 Super Duke R is now 1301cc better suspension, best electronics package, better seating position, more torque. What's not to like, am buying one. It's only drawback you must pay extra to unleash all the electronics, in this competitive market KTM did big mistake. Am sold, first exhaust system Austin or Akrapovic.

    I've owned the 2015 SDR for 3 years now. I would disagree about the engine heat not being an issue. Get's very hot in the summer and it engulf's you with it while at a stand-still. I would also add that the riding aids are poorly integrated and traction control is programmed so badly it's more dangerous to ride with it on.

    Is it your number one bike, right now, Zach?
    After having been on a naked bike for 8 years or so, there are certainly times when the wind blast is tiresome. How is it on the SuperDukeR compared to, say, the SuperDukeGT? The upcoming updated GT is in the running for next bike, unless the Panigale V4 can tempt me away from the GT's practicality...
    Also, you've met The Rock??

    Love the ktm even tho I'm a husqvarna guy(I know there practically the same but idk I just like husqvarna) which do you believe would be better as a commuter or as a full on supermoto. A Ducati hypermotard or husqvarna 701(maybe a on two wheels episode?)
