  • In this video i'm talking about all the differences between a 2019 Superduke R and a 2020 Superduke GT. They changed the superduke r for 2020 so that's a completely new bike. This is gen 2.0 duke from 2017-2019 and the Superduke GT is the 2018-2020 model. I will explain the difference from the front wheel to the back wheel and from the gas tank to the rear fenders.
    Hope to help you decide if you wanna buy a ktm superduke 1290 GT or the Superduke R.

    Made a booboo : The suspension is different on the GT , on the GT you can set it electronically in different ride modes. On the R you have to set the suspension manually by clicks. My bad 😅🤦‍♂️.

    Thank you so much for this real life comparison. I decided to go for the GT, getting on in years and still feel a child at heart and sometimes take the Mrs for a ride, if I had the R, I'd loose her on the first straight. Also, a bigger screen and semi active suspension are a nice add-on touch for the crap roads we have.

    • @InsanitiesBrother
      @InsanitiesBrother Год назад

      @@richardcerritelli9657 I don't know if you pulled the trigger or not. It's a rough machine due to the V_Twin compared to an inline 4 like the busa. I would recommend giving one a test first.
      In regards to performance, it is all there but it's way lower down compared to the busa. You will lose the "OMG torque" feeling at about 120mph. It still pulls up to ~140ish then after that it will gain more slowly to 160ish.
      In my opinion it is worth it. It is a comfortable position but you will want to get a gel seat or the OEM extra heated seat.

    I bought a 2020 1290 GT over the R version about two weeks ago. Making this particular purchase decision was very difficult, as I was standing there looking at both bikes side by side for the better part of an hour trying to figure it out. Finally, a 'sensible' conclusion was arrived at and the GT got the nod. The thing with the GT is at least you've got some luggage capacity (however minimal it may be), so you can can carry some extra shoes and clothes as needed. It turned out that I use those panniers all the time, so buying the R would have been a bit of a problem in my case. (I can only afford one bike, so it has to be a 'do-all' type). With 173hp from the mill, the slightly reduced power output in the GT is more than made up for by having a windscreen and some luggage capacity IMO.

      There actually is a very good lightweight ktm factory pannier for the Superduke R - At erasonable price by luggage standards too - I have them fitted to my SDR and they rock as superlight and super easy to connect and almost no weight to the mounting frame" (3 lugs that bolt directly to frame) so highly recommended - But having said all that... I have a 2017 GT and a 2008 SD 990. The 990 is tricked out and weighs under 400lb dry. But surprisingly, if they have the same tires they handle nearly the same. There really is something to that active suspension. The GT is an amazing bike, handles like a sport bike but has luggage. I also have a 2009 Kawasaki Concours 14 which feels like a pig compared to the GT. It is comfortable at any lean angle, like the GT but when you push you feel the weight on the Kawasaki and it affects what line you have to take. You can go just as fast (on the street) but it takes way more know how and concentration to do it. It has only just a tad more luggage capacity and weights nearly 200 lbs more than the GT. That really puts it into perspective what a great bike the GT is.

    • @cabn4321
      @cabn4321 Год назад

      That’s the problem I am having right now. I have been riding my concours for 11 years and it is a straight up beast! Nobody will let me ride the GT before I buy it so I’m having a very hard time being able to compare it. The Kawasaki is just utterly reliable, comfortable and powerful. Do you miss your C-14 or is the GT that much better?

  • @MiguelTrejoMK
    @MiguelTrejoMK 3 года назад +2

    I haven't ridden an R but I own a GT since some months ago. It's fast, it's a lot of fun, you can ride with your back straight, you can ride all day long and it's gorgeous. I got the Austin Racing slip-on only and it sounds great! And of course you can pack some days worth of luggage and "ride to the sunset". I'm very happy with this bike. I even get the "that's a nice bike" from people on the street.
    Downsides:
    Windshields are windshields so you get a decent amount of noise, wear plugs, problem solved. It get's noticeably hot which is still bearable if you take your legs a little bit out.
    Even though is so worth it. I enjoy it every second.

    I need them both, but I haven't worn out my RC390 yet. Don't know what I'd do w/ 120 MORE horsepower 😮! The seat on the RC is basically a tiny plastic plate, the powerparts seat, for $150 , isn't any better but preferable to the strips of skateboard tape on the GP bikes!

    I bought the 2020 Super Duke GT. The decision was easy for me because i wanted a good option to carry luggage for long trips and also the bigger tank and windshield were important for me. I bought a near new 2019 GT (looks like the 2020 model) blind. As in I bought it on the internet then picked it up. I didn't gel with it straight away. It was better with a new set of tyres on. however 2 weeks later I had KTM service it. I took out the 2020 Duke R and instantly regretted buying the GT. The Duke R is more aggressive and feels faster and rides better low down and slower speeds, not as lumpy. I love the colour of the GT with orange wheels and turns whether I should keep the bike or trade in for a Duke R. Of course I will lose money doing that.

    • @naranjalorange8584

      If it's a bit more aggression you're after, have the track pack installed on your GT, it will open your eyes... Still won't cure some of your other problems sadly. Also install and end can if you haven't already got one.

    GT would be my choice all day long. Just seems like a more rounded bike, if you're getting near enough the same engine power, it's all about the gizmos for me and the GT seems nice and practical. Nicer riding position too. I've had nothing but a vfr400 nc30 for past 10 years so I would be seeking a little more comfort in my next ride 😅 I love a single swing arm, it's just a shame that Akro can covers it a bit more as opposed to the stubby one on the R. Maybe if you removed the rear foot pegs the exhaust could be redesigned so the Akro sits more parallel to the rear fairings and show off the rims a bit more! (Just my preference if I had a say 😅)

    I'm getting ready to purchase my next bike in January, I'm completely split between the 2020 Super Duke GT and the 2020 Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak. I rode the Pikes Peak and it was a blast, I got a chance to sit on a 2020 GT today at a local shop, HOWEVER, I couldn't ride it because the dealer said its a process to "turn on" the bikes. Something like paperwork to request a code from KTM to "unlock" the bike and they don't want to do test drives. It definitely turned me off. However, it comes with all the features +/- some minor differences of the Multistrada, more power, less comfortable position in the footpegs, the Multistrada's riding position is closer to the KTM Adventure S, which was comfy. Maybe there is an aftermarket upgrade to correct the footpeg angle. The 2021 Multistrada is coming and will be a v4 vs a v2, will have "Adaptive Cruise control" (I've seen leaked pics of KTMs Adventure bikes having this and may come out before the Multistrada). The engine is supposed to be lighter than the V2 and will be smoother but without the V2 "grunt". It will make a slight bit more power, but I don't think enough to keep up with the Duke. I'm concerned about the reliability of both manufacturers engines, I hear Ducati services are expensive and the KTM has really only had 'phantom' trouble lights come on and the keyless system stop working requiring a battery removal to reset (not big issues, but for the price...). I could go on, and still, need to find a way to ride the duke, also not sure what all the "upgrade packs" that KTM offers are all about, to 'unlock' and improve things that should be there or free upgrades. Not sure how to feel about that, sort of like software updates on phones I guess (shrugs) but, any advice?

But as I had to cover min 200 km to get to THEM, GT seemed more practical and sensible option w/o losing much fun. But you cant go wrong with either

    When KTM launched the GT for the first time, I remember they said they replace the R’s subframe with a stronger & stiffer one, in order to accommodate the sidebags. Do you see any difference? And I am not talking about those slots/brackets to hold the sidebags.

    • @LifeofSmokey
      @LifeofSmokey  4 года назад +3

      Yep they look totally different. The GT has more of a long straight subframe. The R has a bend in it 😉.

      @@LifeofSmokey I prefer the riding position as I'm old lol and I prefer the looks of the SAS too. Plus for someone that can't normally do it, it wheelies easily 😁. I'd think the SDGT would be a better bike for what I do, I just prefer the SAS. I haven't tried the 2021 model yet but I reckon it will be quite a step up from mine (2018)

    Nice video! I like both for the reasons you pointed out. Both seem comfortable and fun but I can see where the GT might be slightly better. Which is a better all rounder? Also, its not clear to me what kind of bike is the third bike with the nobby tires? That bike appeals to me and not sure i heard you correctly even after replaying the video. Did you put nobby tires on it and have you done a video on it? I know that bike was not the focus but I am interested. Thank

    I'm mostly concered about my back for long distance riding. I own a MT-07 atm, I love my naked bikes. I've got 6 years of on road riding & 4 years off, i'm only 23 at the time of writing this comment. I like to rip about on my MT-07. I love to have it easily whip about as the MT is quite forgiving with the power. How forgiving are these bikes? That's also a concern of mine that i'll have to be very careful not to wheelie it to the moon everytime I accelerate hard lol I also want long distance riding upto 4-6 hours. I feel like the R wouldn't be the best option for that. What do you think?

    • @LifeofSmokey
      @LifeofSmokey  2 года назад +1

      These 160-180hp V-twin engines are not forgiving what so ever!! I love them but i only wheelie them at high speeds cause they are really powerful bikes 😁.
      I love the R and the GT but not for hours on riding like you mention. The Adventure S & R don't look as cool as the R or the GT. But when i took the 1290 Adventure R for a spin i was hooked! It's a comfy caddilac with almost the same power as the GT and R. I raced my buddy's Superduke R with my Super Adventure R and up to 160-170 he's going nowhere , above those speeds the R will take off of course 😁. If you have back problem a more straight up position might be better and the SAS & SAR have that 😎

    • @Near2Future
      @Near2Future 2 года назад

      @@LifeofSmokey Gotcha, yea I wouldn’t have thought they’d be very forgiving lol I like to twist my MT-07 pretty much full throttle in low gears & only go up my a foot or so in the front. I doubt I’d get away with that on these beasts!
      My back doesn’t have any issues with it. Just with my 07 anything over 2 hours & I can get a sore back. I really like the GT & R look. I wouldn’t really go for something like the adventure style as i don’t like the look at all. I’m also thinking about an MT-10 but i like the style more on the KTM.

      @@LifeofSmokey I have my 1290r now. Been out on it a few times! About 1k miles done, loving it! The race on switch can sometimes get water inside it & turn the bike on by itself. Nothing WD-40 couldn't fix, overall what a fun bike it is! I've only had it on rain mode as weather been poor, can't wait to feel the full power. Brings a smile to my face everytime I go for a ride!

    • @smoke05s

      I really got mine for my wife to ride. She normally rides a YAMAHA FZ6R. If the GT is in street mode the throttle is docile enough for her at normal speeds. You have to put it in race mode or really stretch to throttle cables to make the GT feel aggressive. It is about the same weight as the 600 yamaha and handles very solid with the adaptive suspension so the GT is actually more confidence inspiring to her. And while it will wheelie I am pretty sure it is electronically limited in some way because the wheel never goes very high. I have other bikes with less power that wheelie much more uncontrollably than the GT. Going from the MT-07 to the GT would not be difficult and you could dial in the power as you learn. Its the only bike I have with ABS and for me (since I learned without ABS ) is the only thing that bugs me. But every bike I ride with ABS bugs me so it is not something unique with this bike.

      @@smoke05s I got my 2019 SDR in April / may. Very fun to ride, had it in rain mode until I got used to it. Took it out of rain mode within a month, it’s honesty a lot easier to ride then a thought. Feels like a bigger & more aggressive MT-07 which I wanted.
      Wheelie control on these bikes definitely is nice a lot more control for sure. Quickshifter is also very nice but needs re programmed every so often at least mine did when I bought it. All fixed now tho, used to get jammed at 7k RPMs
      I’ve just installed the clear clutch cover & it looks fantastic! This bike is exactly what I wanted. Already put 5k on it since I got it 😆 not been off the thing lol I only thing that annoys me is the suspension. You need it hard for higher speeds but bumps in the road ect get you off the seat. Still trying to fix that. Over all great bike & looks great too. Just need to keep up with maintenance a bit more I’ve found out due to all the electronics. I don’t think I’ll ride it in winter until the 07 but we’ll see. :)

      I believe there is an option for the Superduke's where you can replace the footpegs so it's better riding for bigger people. Got a friend who is 1.9m and also rides a Superduke R. Hello, I am hesitating between buying the Superduke r EVO 2022 or the GT. Aesthetically, I love the R EVO and it seems incredible, but I am concerned that it is not as comfortable to do a route with a passenger. Normally it will be for a few hours but I want to be able to go out with her and my girlfriend for a whole day. Do you see it too hasty or could it be done without problems? I have also seen that you can put a windshield and suitcases. Greetings and good video!

    • @LifeofSmokey

      My 3 friends are now touring south of Europe with 3 superduke R's with bag but no extra windshield. So it can be done , is it as comfortable as a GT , hell no 😁. The GT gets you out the wind and is made as a sport/tourer but the ride feels very similar to the R. But the comfort with the R & GT is no where near the comfort of the Super Adventure series. 😎
