I think it's worth some context that this game was created for a game jam, which (to my limited understanding) is a game making competition where teams have a small time frame to try and flesh out a whole game. We did one at my college over a long weekend, 72 hours. Sometimes there's guidelines, etc. This one had a restriction of "incompatible genres" hence the cooking/horror, 6 weeks to complete. I'm not saying the cutesy horror theme isn't overdone, but I still think it makes it seem more impressive knowing the details
that is interesting, thanks for the info
but its quite telling that they just went for the LOWEST hanging fruit.
While you're generally correct about what game jams are, most games don't necessarily have to be fully fleshed out, just a working concept. There's lots of game jam demos that end up being fleshed out into full games later though.
A lot of these seem to be from game jams, I suppose it's an easy trope to roll out for quick projects.
Honestly I think it really speaks to how well they nailed the aesthetics and most of the game mechanics that people were invested enough to get this disappointed lol, I hope if the devs consider making this a full game they take the feedback into consideration bc there's definitely something really appealing here.
The fact that the hamster sings when you ride on the scooter makes this game unreasonably charming. You know, ignoring the other less wholesome aspects.
The hamter singing while on the bike is really fucking cute lmao
When there is 'saved game' yet it's the first time you're playing it, that's a textbook sign you're playing a horror game.
Vinny could have avoided getting the bad end if he had only found the secret hamster recipe at the night club.
i hate how i understand this
i know "cutesy game that's actually horror" is a cliche thats done to death at this point, but for a short gamejam game i think the theme really works here, especially since its humorous. "little hamster accidentally posions and zombifies whole town" is fun. its a LOT more genuine here than in many other games
Theres also way more passion and less cynism than in the typical game like this.
Feels more "Someone really wanted to make a videogame" than "Someone really hoped to make GameTheory bait slop"
I agree I actually really liked this game - I think the twist is fun and creative , I would play a full version horror or horror-free !
I get that the *concept* here is over done, but holy shit the execution here is like a million leagues better than any other "old retro game go spooky" game I've seen, especially for something made as part of a game jam. Usually these types of games are made by people who only care about the horror aspect so everything else just kinda sucks, but it's clear the small team working on this really loved more chill gaming experiences like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon, because those aesthetics are spot on. Genuinely excited to see what other things the people involved make in the future.
This is good enough to get onto one of the Haunted Ps1 packs
It’s ok.
I don't think anyone has relised that that hamster is carrying ALL of the food in his cheeks. Imagin just haveing four whole oinions in your mouth for any amount of time. Cheeks of steel, man.
I think many people have realized. It is even directly referenced in the dialog.
@@NecromancyForKidsand vinny literally comments on it
Hamsters have some weird malletspace goin on
In his cheeks???
how stinky does it get in there you reckon? you think he GO!GO!wipes?
I think a game in this style that is genuinely a cozy game would be great. Devs if you’re reading the comments please consider making this a full fledged game, I think you could really capture an audience like Stardew’s and animal crossing’s. Best of luck to yall
OH and just to add, keep SOME of the horror aspects, but leave it for very small parts of the game like when it becomes night time or you enter somewhere that isnt necessarily safe or out of bounds. Having just the tiniest amount of eeriness to a game even if its cutesy can really give it more character. Im saying like .5% of the entire game should be that way not a large amount lol. Kind of like how minecraft is a somewhat cozy game but has creepy aspects to it like cave noises or monsters but it genuinely keeps the game very memorable
You could craft axes and shovels for farming and gathering materials, but they’re also weapons for night time against creepy biz
Maybe give the player a choice to scavenge for food or grow it yourself and choosing the quality of ingredients of either feeding people good clean food or slowly turning the residents into ravenous customers with contaminated food.
This is really good for being made with such limits. I think if they do decide to continue with this game, they could definitely make it even better. Maybe if they drop the whole Missingno glitch factor and make a less odd monster enemy, and focus more on the aspect of accidentally poisoning the residents with your ingredients from outside the walls?
The stealth mechanic was pretty interesting where the more items you have you can't hide anymore.
I can't believe Vinny played the third strand type game, Hideous Kojumbo truly is kojumbine.
Nice! This game was made for one of my game jams, it was such a cool entry! I'm glad people are still playing it.
It really seems to have flown right over a lot of people's heads that this was a clear parody of creepypastas. The pasted on eye photos, the loud noises, the red fog effect. It's all there from ancient pasta times. This can't have been done unironically.
For real man, like the whole game literally turns into slender while telling you it's turning into slender ('what's with that static noise?'), fuggin MISSINGNO is the big bad of that section and the rest of the game apparently, the whole thing ends with a stupid jumpscare and practically no resolution -
It's all silly and I'm positive it's on purpose and I like it
The fact that something is lame ironically doesn't necessarily make it less lame tbh
@@pareidolist it's not lame, you just got filtered by poe's law
Then it executed poorly.
@@MVCx_xBthere's a fine line that's difficult to walk between "insultingly obvious satire" and "indistinguishable from the lame/cliche/stupid thing it's mocking." this falls in the latter cateogry
Boy, sure chat loved this game
i was on the edge of my seat until the "scary monster" was revealed. then i fell off of my seat from laughter
The way vinny dropped the bike as soon as the bunny turned had me in stitches lmao
Noped the fuck out frame 1
I think it would be way better if the missingno scare was a stray dog or cat that is trying to hunt the hamster. It would honestly be scarier to me.
I honestly thought it was gonna be a cat, specifically I misidentified the guard at a distance as a baby tiger and thought his ma was a murderhobo and you eventually would have to deliver food there, not harvest onions, and I thought the proper horror would be the hamster starving himself (he mentions not eating on day 1, and he didnt eat day 2, so I assumed he'd die from forgetting to eat
Thats what i thougjt too. Hope the devs can turn this into a full game like that. @aag2139
A lot of people seem to be dismissing the game's premise for a bait and switch, but I think some context for this game's development is useful.
Hamster Chef was made for a Game Jam with the theme of "incompatible genres" and while many games have done the bait and switch, this title tries to blend the survival horror and cooking genre in terms of gameplay, not just story and tone.
I think the gameplay shift is executed well, and marries the resource management of both in an interesting way. Whether it succeeds in that is up for you to decide.
Appreciate the context!
...Were we watching the same game? Because what the hell kind of "resource management" was there in the survival-horror aspect??
You collect ingredients for the cooking aspect of it, but they serve absolutely no implementation into the survival-horror aspect other than _maybe_ the whole "Don't have more than 4 things in your cheek pouches or you can't fit in the holes in the two occasions they're relevant"
And even in those occasions, as seen in this very video, as long as you don't step on a branch, Actual Literal MissingNo.™️ is not an issue, but also just...don't grab more than 4 mushrooms then?
So it's only "survival-horror" in the sense that it's "Don't get caught by the instakill monster", and at that point, this just needs to be a genre called "horror tag" or something, because that's all these kinds of games boil down to: Get "tagged" by the "horror" and you lose
I guess to cut it short: Context makes the game a bit more understandable, but it's ultimately still more overdone than burnt steak, and there's no need to be giving it props for things it straight-up did not do
@@WhimsicottFanatic thats a lot of words and emotion for a hamster game
@@moppupaws Because people wanted a simple cute hamster game and not five Nights and freddies 100000
@@AmoniPaleo Ok but game jam was 2 incompatible genres.
You'd think after seeing missingno the hamster would leave and be like "Yeah sorry man that saliva covered soup isn't happening" and give the very understandable reason why.
He’s gotta make bank somehow.
I genuinely feel like I'm the only person that likes these kinda horror games... minus the instant game overs
you're not! i find them to be somewhat fun when done well, the problem is just that most aren't done well.
@@moppupaws yeah!
I mean this one clearly has passion behind it and isnt relying on some shitty creepypasta from 2010
Having a character named Bunjimen got me good.
I need vegetables the same size as in this game. That onion could feed me for a week in various dishes.
I’m glad you added “in various dishes” 😭
@@panchampangoro4999 or one huge pot of onion soup. 🤤
Hampter
13:53 He most definitely held in an ass joke
I actually clicked on this because it looked like a really cute obscure Dreamcast or PS1 game. If the creators took the pieces from this project and made a retro cutesy game I’m sure it’d make good money
It got me thinking
Would it be legal to use Missingno in a game?
Because, I mean, even if it's directly tied to Pokémon, idk if they directly "own" it, like, it there are any trademarks or anything
certainly would be interesting to know if something created by accident within an IP you own would also be yours. whilst there have been rulings on AI creations not being copyrightable, i could see something like a video game being treated a lot differently due to more deliberate actions being needed to even have the base for a glitch like that to occur and it not being the end product. some glitches are iconic and would certainly have a brand value, but yeah, very interesting question that i too would love an answer to.
@@鏖魔キリン I've been non ironically thinking about that
On one side, they do own the code, and Missingno is caused by some errors in it, but, does it means also the "sprite" and all that goes around it is also owned by TPC?
While looking a bit more into that, I saw that technically it wouldn't be illegal if they don't have any copyright associated to Missingno, it is definitely illegal to use something knowing its association to another brand and using it to attract attention to your product. I mean by that, using Missingno would very probably be a problem because of its strong popularity and tie to Pokémon, while using one of the many random "pokemon" of the same kind wouldn't be a problem as they would just seem random to the vast majority of people. But again, that can't be the definitive answer, as, like we can see with properties that Disney used to own, that are still strongly tied to other characters that they do still own, that haven't prevented anyone from doing garbage movies/games using them and legaly getting away with that.
So, to do short, did some researched, learned a bit, but still far from getting a definitive answer, I'm sure someone more knowledgable with copyright laws could easilly answer that.
Even if, now that I think about it, that's a pretty unique case, not sure something like that ever happened by the past
I would absolutely play a non-horror version of this
pretty danm good for just a month and a half
If some other gameplay elements were added, it could have been a decent cutesy game.
Thanks for the heads up Johnny, I've been having a really rough week and I want something completely innocent and wholesome to watch :)
Edit: bruh
Bro though it said gullible in the ceiling 💀
the scooter sound shares the same engine sound as Supra Mayro Krat a classic
Fully expected things to go awry near the end. Satisfied by the results.
Something something gluck gluck hamster chef
why is it literally missingno
They had 3 days to make the game i dont blame them for doing something thats easy to implement

Literally just got a hamster 2 days ago. Wild
vinny being casually numb to horror games
Place your bets: How long until someone makes a Friday Night Funkin' mod based on this?
At least the horror part is pretty tame, and not them being hacked by a chainsaw to be sacrificed to some eldrich god.
I hope Vinny plays more horror games or games with a horror twist in the future
like that Basilisks
4:45 I had a moment here before realizing it was "Bungee"
In addition to the Game Jam context, its also important side note that the Hamtaro Gameboy/ GBA games were more popular than the actual games themselves in some markets, tying in the retro gameboy/N64 theming to the Hamster protagonist a bit more closely, if you were in one of those demographics.
For being made in just a few days, there's a lot of nice extra layers here.
Also, "Hop Pop" seems to be an Amphibia reference.
"Hehe, frogs died here" indeed.
I noticed the reference too, and got a small grin from it lol
isn’t hamster chef the guy from mass effect
Oh boy, im sure this cute itchio game will have no sinister twist!
After the first couple orders, I was hoping the dark twist would be someone ordering rabbit stew.
Finally a dose of obscure game / Modern indie game
i am way too entertained by the simpleflips jay z business acumen bit
It's a silly and fun game, I was waiting for you to play it ❤
Game is kinda eh but I like the song that plays when you ride the scooter
26:55 i cant escape the question, even here 😂
Did not expect this to turn into a analog horror game
i love that i can tell which games vinny got recommended from manly :))
O boi, what a good guy he is. When a horror game that really gets my attention comes out, I reject watching any gameplays about it until he does one
@@Fragile_Blue_Lobster same!! love his commentary and how chill he is
I love how the monster turned out to be missingno 😆
honestly i'd love to see this game expanded! maybe keeping some weird/questionable things (like sourcing ingredients from slightly less ethical places- maybe some meat dishes?) but leaning more into expanding your cooking empire.
but either way, i think it's a neat little experience! i'm surprised by how much effort was put into such a short game
I had no damn Idea this was uploaded an hour ago, I watched Fusion's vid on this game in November I think.
I agree with one of the chatters- this game for me could've worked if the dark elements were subtle or (what I think would be the biggest twist) it actually is a sweet and fun game
At the 11 ish min mark about burger king being a psyop, burger king overseas is really popular but in america its practically nothing. The only reason its still up is because they have ties within the us government to continue operations in overseas countries. This is why most usa bases, both in and outside of usa, have a burger king. Its because of the deal with the government
They basically had to change almost everything Burger King did in Europe due to higher food control standards in most european countries. Im pretty sure its why its actually popular with people in europe.
@22:12 that sweet, sweet voice crack my dude. Priceless ♥
This game is great but it could be elevated a bit more if the village had more people at the beginning ordering stuff and then they stop ordering things and standing outside their houses as the days (post mushroom/onion) go on
We all live, in a digital world (di-gi-tal)
I wanna be the greatest hamster of them all
i know this was for a game jam, but honestly i still think there were better routes to go than cooking/horror. id kill for like a cooking game that turns into like a top down isometric shooter or a beat em up or something
How about a cooking stealth game, all the critters in this small town are very small animals, and leaving the town walls puts you into some dudes garden to raid, where there's a cat that patrols the garden. You gotta stealth around the cat, distract him etc to get the ingredients.
Theres always cooking grandma by Lionel Snill
Battle Chef Brigade might count as a "beat'em up." You fight monsters to collect food ingredients.
The game's main theme is cooking, with genres brawler and puzzle.
Hop Pop is such a cute name lol

It's all in ya head luigi, it's your imagination. There's no such thing as "Vinny - GO! GO! Hamster Chef! (a fun, innocent game which does not contain ANY dark twists)" RUclips video.

36:23 Of course you like the mushrooms “Vinesauce” 🙄🙄

Dev make this a full game and remove the horror
The last 3 times I've tried to eat at Burger King, I was unable to for different reasons each time
What a day to be a hamster! What a...delightful day.
i feel sorry for the dev(s) reading these comments but at the same time if i see another "cute x3 game turned oo spooky" i will combust and die
ah yes, the game that has a little twist in the later parts. 🙂
Aww, the cute cross of Animal Crossing and Overcooked! I'm excited~
Games these days have intensified my latent trust issues
Yeah, as impressive as a game like this is, very rarely do indie developers play the cutesy game aesthetic straight these days without devolving into creepypasta-esque horror. I don't mean to sound so jaded, but horror games from back then weren't so worried about online engagement, but it feels like the only way horror games get successful these days is through the lens of a Let's Play RUclipsr and a rabid fandom of kids because they like the aesthetic without knowing about the horror elements.
@@AluminumFusion22 I definitely wish the horror aspect wasn't so lucrative right now. Sometimes it feels like a crutch, in my opinion. But this game definitely had some creative mechanics and I could see it becoming successful no matter what direction they take it, should they consider furthering development!
the missigno shit made me laugh so fucking hard. i think that part could work as a horror game for small children cause theres nothing actually scary about that to adults lol. i get this was made as a game jam thing but yeah this would be way better if you just remove the horror and try to get the ac audience. the whistling was cute though.
Indie Dev "Not make a cute/children toy game that turns into horror with instant game over and places to hide" challenge: Impossible.
I hope this gets a inverse success story, when compared to the creation of FNAF
b-b-but it was for a game jam!!! its completely ok because its was for a game jam!!!
Why people hate this game? I think that it's pretty sweet and well made. Even if the horror part isn't the scariest thing in the world.😢
cute horror and mascot horror fatigue i guess, plus the cute parts are cool and charming, then the horror just gets generic
I agree, this is way better than cynical slop like BanBan, PoppyPlaytime and FNAF.
You can tell the devs were really passionate and didnt just wanna be a youtube kids content farm.

You have no idea how much I wish this game wasn't another "cutesy turned horror" game.
Yeah. Nowadays you’d be lucky to actually find an endearing cutesy game with no strings attached.
it is funny how after this there was that frog golf game that was unapologetically cute
id play the shit out of a genuine cutesy hamster food delivery game
To be fair, this was made for a game jam where the point was doing exactly that.
