What Happened to a Pack of Dogs in the Sea?

On a recent visit to the Island Jambeli in Machala, Ecuador, I saw a pack of four dogs enter the water from a deserted stretch of the beach. The dogs swam out to a group of rocks which gets submerged at every high tide. The dogs knew the exact time to enter the water, which they did at the precise time of low water, when the current was weakest. One of the pack lagged behind and amazingly, the pack leader, and later other pack members also turned back to encourage it!
They spent about 30 minutes on the rocks, chasing birds and generally having fun. Then, at the exact time when the flood tide started, they entered the water again to return to the beach with the flood!
They clearly had done this before and had to know that there is no food for them on those rocks. This was an activity for pure fun, with no other objective in mind. The intelligence and team work on display is amazing.

En una visita reciente a la isla Jambeli en Machala, Ecuador, vi cuatro perros entrar al agua desde un tramo desierto de la playa. Los perros nadaron a un grupo de rocas que se sumerge en cada marea alta. Los perros sabían el momento exacto para ingresar al agua, lo que hicieron en el momento preciso de la baja agua, cuando la corriente era más débil. ¡Uno de los cuatros se quedó atrás y, sorprendentemente, el líder, y luego otros también se volvieron para alentarlo!
Pasaron unos 30 minutos en las rocas, persiguiendo pájaros y en general, divirtiéndose. Luego, en el momento exacto en que comenzó la marea de la inundación, entraron nuevamente en el agua para regresar a la playa con la inundación.
Claramente habían hecho esto antes y tenían que saber que no hay comida para ellos en esas rocas. Esta fue una actividad para la diversión pura, sin otro objetivo en mente. La inteligencia y el trabajo en equipo en exhibición son sorprendentes.
