  • Sweetwater is the largest online music retailer, and has the largest physical showroom in North America. Located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, it's a 2 1/2 hour drive for me, but I can do it in less than an hour in my Cozy MKIV airplane! In this video, I fly out to Sweetwater, tour through the showroom and facility, and demo every synthesizer I can get my hands on. A couple of the synths I tried gave me severe G.A.S.....which ones do you think they are?

    As someone who has been watching another aviation channel recently, this was really fun to see aviation & synths in one video. Regarding the Osmose: If I could justify one, I could see myself often turning the pitch bend off. I think for me the real strength would be being able to control the “amp envelope” of each note individually. Like having a breath controller for each finger.

    You were playing the E-Osmose, but it was the keyboard below it that is what I want! That Korg PA5X tugs at my heart strings.
    Since I primarily play 'The Great American Songbook', synths don't really hold any appeal to me. Of course, when you think about it, the most widely used synth by type is the Hammond Organ, and I would like one of those, but not what you're channel is about, I don't think.
    When you taxi in the Cozy, obviously the front wheel must be down. Does it retract for parking, and if so, how, and furthermore, why? I can see it retracting in flight, but I guess I don't understand it on the ground. Cockpit entrance and exit?

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 месяцев назад

      Honestly I don't know a huge amount about arrangers, so I didn't put any of them in my video.
      The Cozy (and Long EZ) retract their front wheel when parking in order to prevent the airplane from tipping over backwards onto its propeller. It is sensitive to weight, and without people the airplane, a light gust of wind can pick the nose up and tip it over. Parking it with the nose on the ground moves the center of gravity forward, so this can't happen.

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 5 месяцев назад

      @@ScottsSynthStuff thank you, Scott. I wasn't sure about the why for the nose, but that actually makes a lot of sense with the CG that sensitive.
      As to Arrangers, they tend to be marketed towards a specific type of player. For me, I'm not a great player, I had about a year worth of piano lessons when I was 8 or 9 years old and I never learned anything, really. So, an Arranger allows you to play a melody and a Chord, with the chord in the left hand. From a single chord, the Arranger uses one of several styles (600 in the PA5X, 800 in the new Yamaha Genos 2) and generates an 8 part backing track. That track consists of drums, percussion, bass and five other parts, which depend on the style. You might have piano, guitar and strings, or a full brass jazz orchestra playing in the background.
      The old organs of the 70s and 80s, with the one finger chords where the genesis of this type of system, but over 50 years or so, they've gotten a lot better. With the last few generations, they've been good enough that a person could play a small lounge, restaurant, or something like that, or even do a duo with a singer or singer/guitarist.
      There is a German, Alois Muller, who plays a variety of Arranger Keyboards, and he is probably the best demonstration of the what you can get from them.
      www.youtube.com/@AloisMueller
      The PA5X gives you a 16-track sequencer. Actually, it gives you TWO 16-track sequencers which can be played together, or fade one to another. It gives you the capability to create sounds, or at least to alter the internal sounds, but since all the internal sounds are Sample/Playback, you are limited. On the other hand, the new Genos 2 actually has a real FM synth built in and basically gives you the capability of a DX-7 along with all the sample playback.
      Arrangers aren't for everyone, especially if you're making electronic music. But, as I said in my first post, I play The Great American Songbook which doesn't really use any 'synthesizers' for it's type of music. So, it fits my limited ability to play (I can't read bass clef at all, but I know how to create a chord) and the style of music I mostly play. Check out Alois's YT page, and you'll get an idea of what an Arranger can do.

    The Long-EZ is the coolest plane ever! I mean unless you can find a Raytheon Starship.
    I grew up near the USAF museum in Dayton. My first software developer job was working on military avionics. You know the MIDI bus and the MIL-STD-1553 bus are similar, except 1553 was standardized in 1973, and it’s 1.0 Mbit, 32 channels and has redundancy and uses twinax cable. MIDI is 31.25 Kbit and was standardized in 1983. It’s funny that MIDI is 32X slower and 10 years newer, but you have a lot more budget when you’re selling F-16s than when you’re selling Jupiter-6s. They both have incredible longevity. Although MIDI is really just Roland DCB 2.0. Roland should get most of the credit. Sorry I go a little crazy when I get a chance to nerd out about aircraft AND synthesizers…

I was thinking about selling my Nord a1 and summit to cover (some) of the cost of a 3rd wave. I was hoping to see a few on the used market, but that hasn’t really happened yet. Anyways, do you think that a 3rd wave could cover what the a1 and summit does? Seems like it could. I didn't say I couldn't afford some synths. I just make considered decisions where and how much I wish to spend on synths. Could I afford a $10,000 Moog One? Sure. Would I spend $10,000 on a synthesizer? Not in a million years.

      @@ScottsSynthStuff Me neither unless it did $20,000 worth of stuff then it would be a deal. I don't have the 3rd Wave but how would that compare to the Iridium that has 5 engines and can do 3 pairs layered in 2 voices at once? Also a wavetable kind of their MO. $5K is steep and the keys aren't that great looking. I might would buy a desktop version. The Iridium is only about $2K for the module if you look around. Obviously this has a million knobs driving up the cost. Iridium has an advanced touch screen though with finger manipulations and this just knobs and buttons. Would come down to sound but is it worth that price? Iridium is also MPE interactive. I noticed now there is a 3rd wave desktop but only $1,500 less and missing half the UI and obviously the keys. I'm not spending $3,500 when they removed half the interface. Not a good design idea. Only 41 knobs on the desktop verses 76 not including the buttons. No thank you.

      I recently bought a few vintage synths and that was one of the ones I picked up but I didn't know much about it. It's absolutely become one of my favourites in the bunch I got.

    ha this is so American, fly to the music store, look at the worlds biggest collection of guitar pedals, flies home from the music store. The end.

    Not true on the M8x PAT. It's adjustable in the settings. It can play PAT as responsive or not based on the assigned values and sensitivity. The very few PAT presets on the M8x aren't that good if that's all you tried it's nothing special until you edit it yourself.

    Agree with some of the others that the Expressive and M8X are synth bullies in their own way. Both have changed the game and raised the bar. Your turn Korg and Roland -- mostly Korg. Nothing from them impresses me right now other than the Pa5X. Also great plane! Im from Dayton so Ive been an aviation nerd my whole life.

    You didn’t buy anything?

      @ScottsSynthStuff  5 месяцев назад +2

      You can't actually BUY anything at the Sweetwater showroom. You can try it out, but you still have to order it from their warehouse. You can arrange to pick up your purchase there, but you can't walk into the showroom and say "I want THIS" and then pick it up and take it home.

      @@ScottsSynthStuff That’s weird. Tossing a new synth into the back of the plane and flying home would be awesome.
