Saw this at Cannes two years ago at the premiere. Terry Gilliam got a standing ovation for about 15 minutes Afterwards I went and got 20 cheese bites and a coke from KFC
A MUST WATCH! Just watched this movie & it is absolutely fantastic. The sets are not over designed and costumes are simple yet very cool. The acting is superb and makes this movie funny, emotional, and insane(in a good way). Pryce and Driver are the perfect pair that dance flawlessly thru this movie. I Believe this to be Jonathon Pryces's best acting job. 👍👍 Up!
“Thats so pythonesque though isnt it?” (said monotonously cynically) is the most dull, stereotypical po-faced ‘professional movie critic’ first sentence that other guy could have said.
The only movie of Gilliam's which I've enjoyed was The Fisher King; the rest I can very happily do without. The dialogue is, like the cutting, messy, and hard to understand; often characters talk over one another... his movies are chockfull of ideas to the point where none of them seem to matter.. He seems to me the absolute diametric opposite of a Tarkovsky.. I as fifteen when Time bandits came out and I loved it; since then I struggle to see what I liked about it..
That's odd since Adam Driver in the movie, which I've seen, is nothing like Adam Driver appears to be offscreen. But keep judging something you know nothing about. 😆
Entertainingly opinionated, backed with abundant thoughtful reasoning, defends his positions like they really matter, yet unafraid to admit when he's wrong. But enough about me.
I saw this movie almost one year ago in my local cinema for whatever reason. I thought it was absolutely amazing! Glad it gets a proper release now and even more glad Mark digs it as well.
Wonder of they'll ever make a feature film about when they made it in 2000 with Depp, called Lost In Lost In La Mancha, then the whole thing will go meta boom
I was very lucky to see this last year and honestly i think this is one of my favourites, ignoring the legend that has become the making of this film is still stands on its own merits. Fantastic ending and some very unique storytelling, often not seen in films anymore. Terry truly has managed to adapt the impossible.
Those two documentaries need to be on the Blu Ray when it comes out. Perfect all nighter. Watch the failed making of documentary, the film and the making of documentary.
Takes far too long to get going, and goes on for far far too long. I don't know how Kermode can compare this to Holy Grail - it contains very little of the same energy. Probably Gilliams worst film - which is a shame after great films like 12 monkeys and Fear and Loathing.
Takes about 30 minutes to go, "full Gilliam" but once it does, it's great. And Adam Driver is hilarious. Probably my favorite performance by him so far. Btw, I made a tribute video to Terry's films if anyone is interested. ruclips.net/video/GvT4fVEJ7Pw/видео.html It was made with the die hard fans in mind. Hope ya like it!
Interesting the last claim there, because I’ve never known Gilliam as anything other than the guy who couldn’t make don quixote and this was my first film of his and I liked it quite a lot
Caught the advanced screening last night and loved it, vintage Gilliam. It does drag on a bit but I can only imagine that's cut down from a much, much, much longer director's cut.
It is sad at the end but actually on reflection I felt inspired and happy, because in the end although he is physically dead, Quixote is quite immortal and will live on forever!
Saw it on the 23rd; thanks to Terry G for his persistence as it is all that I could have hoped for. Gilliam draws excellent performances from his leads, as well as paying homage to the book, his quest to bring the film to the screen, and a top quality Trump dig for good measure.
The castings great, some of it I really like other parts i hate, it’s weird in the respect that it oscillates widly between high enjoyability and pretentious drivel. I honestly don’t know if I like or dislike the film as a whole, I only know my opinion on individual scenes. Hmmm 🤔
Just watched the movie and am touched to tears. In my own humble way, I can relate very, very viscerally to the struggles of someone who just cannot go along with the world as it has been handed to them. Better BY FAR to strive for something special in life and fail than to strive for average and achieve it.
I was lucky enough to see the one screening this had in my town, and it was so worth the wait. I've long loved Gilliam, and I absolutely loved this movie.
I find myself wondering whether Lost in La Mancha helped generate public interest in seeing this film come to fruition. P.S. Totally a Terry Gilliam fan, everything from this to Twelve Monkeys and The Fisher King, to Brazil, to "the animator suffered a fatal heart attack."
Thank god. I was hoping this was going to be great. And it sounds sublime. Lost In La Mancha is an amazing documentary and I really hope that when this appears on Blu, they include the new one they’ve made along with the movie (hint, hint Criterion?). Cannot wait to see both!
The movie came out in 2018 and you are reviewing it in 2020, man what took you so long? But considering the movie took thirty years to make, it feels on point.
I absolutely loved and adored this film. Terry Gilliam is immaculate in his vision. Just incredible. Fifteen minute standing ovation! Bravo!! Well done! Cheerio and all that!
Sorry, but I won't have that. Tideland is a masterpiece. In all honesty, Fear and Loathing is at the bottom of my Gilliam list, along with Brothers Grimm. I still enjoy them, though.
"It's not for everyone, but who wants a Terry Gilliam film that is?"
That should be the pull quote.
i realize it is kinda off topic but does anybody know of a good site to stream newly released series online?
@Johnny Esteban Lately I have been using Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
@Johnny Esteban I would suggest FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)

@@Charlieb82 Not as bad as the movie
Help yourself to a honeycomb Yorkie for the glovebox.
a better story than the film itself
Haha, just watched the film, I quite enjoyed it. Now I'm craving cheese bites and coke
So, between Evita, The Two Popes, and this, apparently Jonathan Pryce is the most Latino Brit alive.
Adam Driver has been unstoppable lately.
This film was in production ages ago, Driver filmed this 3 years ago actually!
He’s unstoppable until the 11th of feb.
I think I hate him, actually.
wait til you see Annette..his best work yet

A Mark Kermode review about every Terry Gilliam film: "This is so nearly a good film".
Loved Lost in La Mancha. I'd really love to get my hands on a copy of He Dreams of Giants
This movie was kinda interesting and captivating yet stressful to watch. Especially when reality starts to fall apart.
I loved this movie as well
This came out in 2018 though.
I can watch it on google play right now if I wanted to.
It's Gilliam though. I'm happy to finally be able to see it on the big screen today after such a wait.
This is a fantastic film.. just watch it..
Is this a new version or something? I'm sure I saw this last year?
Due to lots of legal issues it was never really widely released
@@satorudo Thanks, got a bit unsure there with everyone speaking as it was brand new.

The man who killed don quixote. A noble knight and his squire roam the spanish countryside in search of a plot.

Times Bandits is a straight up masterpiece. First saw it as a kid and was utterly enthralled. Watched it as an adult and it was better.
How come the blu ray is out and says 2018?
It had its premiere on 2018 and then a producer sue Gilliam, so they had to stop the wide release.
Nah, Adam Driver...doing Adam Driver...nah.

Yeah, the distribution was very strange. I saw it a year ago too (in France) and it seems to have kept gradually coming out everywhere since.

OH yeah there is. I'm not sure how much (if anything) a DC would add, but I'm in no doubt there is yards and yards of tape on the floor.
Gilliam is legit trying to establish The Church of Batman The Redeemer
I saw it at the BFI with Terry Gilliam and found it extremely entertaining and rather sad at the end.
It is sad at the end but actually on reflection I felt inspired and happy, because in the end although he is physically dead, Quixote is quite immortal and will live on forever!

seen it a year ago in Germany. Its been out on DVD there for an age also. I really liked the film.
I have my doubts about the movie, but Jonathan Pryce is a pearl of great prize.
It was dreadful. It meanders, and wobbles and goes pear shaped and falls right off the wheel. This thing is a burnt offering. 🤑

Terry Gilliam hasn't made a good movie since the '90s, but I love Adam Driver, so I'll give this a look.

Passed Mark Kermode on an escalator at Waterloo station today, must of been on his way to record this. He looked sad and old, but I was happy.
New Terry Gilliam with Adam Driver? Should be great. Always thought Don Quixote sounded like a story about a donkey that only eats porridge......
Dreadful geriatric crap from a faded director, a cheap-looking, headache-inducing remake of The Fisher King. Just a bad movie.
Gilliam should make "The Man Who Killed Epstein", because he sure didn't kill himself.
That's on the assumption that he's even dead and not hiding out in some Global Elite bunker mansion. It wouldn't surprise me these days.
"nearly killed terry gilliam" damn mark, too soon
Watched it on dvd a few months ago and was in agony the entire time. Genuinely awful.
