Perhaps in 3D coordinates the pickaxe is behind the block. It's just that the the depth buffer is reset for drawing the pickaxe so it does't get covered by the wall.

You have to put the Recipe in, exit out of the crafting so all you blocks fall on the ground, Exit the world, restart a new world, get Obsidian, Smelt it, turn it into Packed Obsidian, Trade you Diamond Pickaxe with a Villager for 1 Emerald, then give that Emerald to another Villager that will trade you for 1 Wood Plank, use that one wood plank to break your Nether Portal(You have to make a Nether Portal before Step 4), Exit Minecraft. Play GTA 5 Online for Exactly 13 hours 22 minutes and 36 seconds, start up Minecraft, go into the world you want your Ultra Stone Crafting Table, pick up the Blocks that you had thrown on the ground, have a Creeper blow up your house, rage quit Minecraft. Stop playing for 1 year, go into a deep depression, get suicidal thoughts, decide you wanna play Minecraft again, start up Minecraft, and BOOM. Your Ultra Stone Crafting Table will be waiting. Your Welcome

The pickaxe isnt getting smaller it just stays the same distance from your face as the wall becomes farther and farther away. Therefore, the pickaxe appears the same size while the walls appears to become bigger and smaller as it is closer or farther away.
