My grandfather took us to the Tulsa airport in the 50’s. In those days you could walk to a short fence about 50 yards from the parked planes. To a 7 year old boy watching those planes start up was the greatest show on earth.
I used to fly in a DC-6 from Oakland to Honolulu to Kwajalein on business, two 12 hour legs, and was eventually relieved when it was replaced with a 707. Nostalgia is one thing but ... low altitude and turbulence and boredom is another.
It is a perfect video that captures not only the takeoff and landing of the famous reciprocating airliner of the past, but also the inside of the hangar and the view from the cockpit.👏👏👏👍👍👍

I was a US Vice Consul at the time and our boss, the US Consul, wanted me to check out their operation to see if they were legit. It was a great experience, flying over the Caribbean at night, including Cuba, at 10,000 feet. We had been delayed, since they could not find the life raft, which had been sent on a plane to Bogota. Finally, they grabbed a couple armloads of life jackets, threw them into the back of the plane, and off we went. I had a private pilot's license, so the crew let me have some left seat time. Fantastic. Coming back, the plane was packed with two cars and lots of home appliances that had been ordered from an appliance store in Miami.
I flew from AVL to EWR on DC6Bs on United in the late 60s several times. Loved the old school feel of them in the last days of commercial piston props.
As a kid I was lucky to live in New Guinea and flew a lot on DC3s, DC4s and DC6s and once on a Super Constellation , I loved it and even today I am in total awe when I am in a plane , always get a window seat just behind the wings so I can watch what they do 👍
These Red Bull folks are something else. They have their fingers in auto and bike racing of all types; air races; boat races; etc. But restoring and preserving something as magnificent as this…and flying folks in it too…awesome!👍😁. And it all is due to an energy drink empire. You can’t make this stuff up!!🙂 One question…did these planes have pressurization? I figured they did…the DC-3 didn’t, also the DC-4’s. Just wondering…👍

I flew on a DC-7 in 1955. It was one of AA's flagship planes at the time. The whole crew signed a document and gave it to me I still have to this day. I sent a digital copy of it to AA and they said they had never seen one before and thanked me for it.
My first plane ride. 25 minute flight Calgary to Edmonton 1966. Needed a sip of lemonade to pop my ears in the unpressurized cabin. Roughest landing ever. Wobbly sheet metal on the wing.
I flew on several DC-6 aircraft as a boy back in the 50s. Recently I was in a town 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks, AK and they have a neat DC-6 there on display.

The DC-6 is my favorite piston engine plane (I never cared much for jets) It's growling radials sing the best music and ast about 6:17 I just melt in it. The DC-6 was a moneymaker for the airlines and then later for charter airlines and freighters and was relatively trouble free if properly maintained.
The Red Bull DC-6...I believe this one originally belonged to Yugoslav President Josip Broz TITO. I toured his luxury "Blue Train" in the outskirts of Belgrade earlier this summer. He had a penchant for 50's and 60's Cadillacs and Lincolns too. This guy liked classy modes of transportation!
Yes,it belonged to President Tito from 1958 to 1968.After that Tito gave this plane to Zambias President Kaunda.After a few years of using in Zambia it is sold to one south african company.Red Bull bought this plane in South Africa.

And as we waited to get on the military green constellation after arriving in New York... about 5:00 a.m.... my older brother was holding up a magazine to me showing me a picture of the first American to reach space John Glenn. Black smoke billowed out of the constellation as an engine started up and I could see it through the window.... My brother teased me about it maybe blowing up in the sky😂😂😂... That's why I remember it to this day... We were on a military transport headed to Frankfurt Germany to meet up with her dad.... And there was stationed near PONTI MUSION.... A little town in the Northeast part of France.... We left 3 years later... And came back on a PAN AM 7O7 which was awesome.
I used to work in STL inthe early '80s enjoyed watching Zantop employees (just kids really) bring one over to get fuel. The oil would be dripping from all 4 nacelles and the main wheelwells
When I was in the navy, had about four of these to take care of. Was working on some instrument in the cockpit and I noticed on the co-pilot's glare shield, some one had taped up a frame of a peanuts cartoon. There's Linus running along with a toy airplane saying when he grew up he wanted to be a pilot and then he tripped and fell on his face. From outside the frame one of the other kids was saying , you're too fat, dumb, and stupid to be a pilot, to which he answered, okay, so I'll be a co-pilot.

In the 60s, I took this plane from SF to Vietnam. We did island hopping to get to VN. Coming back, we took a Being 707 to Washington State.

I made my first ever flight in one of these, from Stanleyville to Brussel. Took a whole day, with two stops to refuel :-)
