- In her 14 years, Copa has been by the side of Orvis President Simon Perkins through myriad changes--Montana guide life, a move to Vermont, marriage, children, and more. She has been a constant source of love and companionship, and as she nears the end of her life, Simon reflects on how much their relationship has meant to him. In the fall of 2020, he wanted to give her a chance to return to the Montana prairies of her youth one last time, to run through the prairie in search of sharp-tailed grouse.
Filmed in southern Vermont and central Montana. To learn more about the upland hunting opportunities in the region this was filmed, visit our are endorsed partners at prooutfitters....

Just days ago, had to put my 16+ year family dog to sleep and a hunting buddy sent me this. What a wonderful loving gesture and story, but through a blanket of tears I said that damn bird better drop. I can only hope it did.
I'll bet Copa came from Sand Coulee Kennels. Your video touched me deeply as we put Meggels down on Jan 13 at 15 1/2. She was out of the same lineage. She was mostly a delight, a reason for concern sometimes and one hell of a Montana hungarian, sharptail, and pheasant dog. With nearly 400 afield she handled all three superbly.
I cried like a baby on Jan 12 & 13.

I have a 12 year old setter who I brought into my home at the same point of my life. This one of the most moving things I have ever watched. Thank you Orvis and Simon Perkins for sharing your beautiful story. I hope I can take my Ellie on one more epic adventure, maybe 2, while she still can.
Copa will be in Montana year 15.....physically or spiritually. Such a beautiful story! Proud to be a Made in America Orvis vendor.
3 min in and I'm crying.... Dogs are a massive part of my life and I know the feeling or then getting old. Keep it up copa
Thank you for this beautiful dog story. Blessings.
Salute to the loves of our time. May they always light our way.
Seeing this, unexpectedly emotional, with my both dogs by my side just made me cry after my 24h shift … no better way to start in a day than having a honest emotional breakdown because of the love for our furry family members 🥹🫶🏼 thanks for the insights and amazing shots, she looked so confident, fulfilled and settled. So awesome to see her 🙏🏼
This was a beautiful tribute!
Beautiful story !!! Made the eyes leak a little 😊 My little Scruffy crossed the Rainbow Bridge earlier this year, she was 18 yrs old. On her last day, she was running around, playing like she was half her age. Still breaks my heart that she’s gone.
I hope you get to enjoy another year with Copa 😊
Thank you Copa😊
Heart warming. I lost my beloved Irish Setter Fiona last year. She almost made it to 14, but the car accident we were involved in seemed to accelerate her aging spine. She loved every day though stalking and chasing squirrels, birds etc. Let's hope Copa makes it to 15. Blessings always.
I’m not crying…..you’re crying.
Great job Orvis.
Love this company!
This had me in tears! My setter Winston hunted his last day at 16 yrs!
Fabulous. Nothing more beautiful than an old dog loving life.
Brought tears to my eyes. Had my tri-color Jennie until she was sixteen.
Thank you COPA for a great example of the kind of love and joy dogs bring to an individual and families. Like so many watching this brought tears because our family dog Elliot is at this stage as well. Thank you for sharing your story COPA & Simon, expressed it beautifully.
Gorgeous Gorgeous Copa! She is majestic - doing everything she was born to do.
Dammit, watched this again and teared up the second time too...
Thank you for making this video.
Who tf is cutting onions?
Beautiful story and relationship!
Such a beautiful story told in such a beautiful way. Tears just streamed as I watched.. remembering my Max who I had to put down when he was 12. He was an ever-watchful father to my kids as they grew, my constant companion, accompanying me on every hike, job site, swim... my best buddy. Thanks for honoring your best buddy in such a way to bring me back to my days with Max. After almost a decade he is still sorely missed and my work now has me out of the country for long periods of time so not I remain dogless... perhaps not ready to commit yet. From what you've shown in this film, your love will see her through to 15 and maybe even beyond. Thank you.
Thank you Simon for this wonderful story. Copa is a special Setter and I have been blessed with with wonderful Setters for over 40 years of hunting in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Kansas. I know well the joy you have had with her at your side at home and in the field. Again, thank you for sharing as your story brings tears of joy to us who have been owned by Setters.
Hats off to COPA! I love my dogs as well and you brought tears to my eyes thank you!
My English Springer Spaniel, Jake, is going to be 11 in October. He is so intelligent that I can’t believe he is a dog. I cannot imagine e life without him - he tries to please me every second and doesn’t leave my side. Your video had me in tears fro
start to finish. Beautiful story!
I hope you and she will have a wonderful 15th year and am so glad you treasure her enough that you gave her that awesome 14th year! ❤❤
Thank you Orvis, Simon and COPA. See you next year!
Animals are such an amazing gift, building a bond between of one heart and joyfully giving freely. God bless you and yours, and thank you for sharing Copa.
You don't train great dogs they train you.
What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing and thank you for the tears. I have had to let go of two dogs because their old hips could not stand up, each was my favorite until the next one. I have a new 6 month old yellow lab puppy and look forward to the adventures that are calling us! Thank you ORVIS and thank you COPA!!
Simon, this was a truly beautiful tribute to a beautiful dog....I don't know where things are at this point ( 8/21/21 ) with Copa, but I pray that you get to go out another fall with her.....to me, dogs are much more inspirational than most people...and although my heart is scarred from the loss of my old labs, I would not have traded them for the world......( P.S. I love your store !)
this story hits all too close to home, I have an 11 year old setter named Sage and she is showing her years and her miles. Sage is just the kindest soul at home and just a machine in the field, she truly lives for the uplands. Thanks for sharing your story.
My 15 year old dog started trembling and going rigid ( a seizure?) a couple days ago, he's had a bladder infection so the vet said over the phone that it might be a pain response cause it happened when he went out to potty. But yesterday evening he was sleeping by me, stood up to stretch and couldn't stand up, he just fell over. He can get on his legs this morn but then staggers and collapses, so I am waiting for the vet to open to take him in. It is going to crush me if they have to put him down, he was my son's dog and when my son died 5 years ago he became my baby and such a comfort to me. He's going blind too but up until a few days ago he still had energy and was his happy self and still wanted to play tug of war and was doing fine. My 14 year old cat Bitty died last Friday after 2 months of sickness and vet visits, and this is so hard, possibly losing 2 of my fur babies so close together. I pray they can help Zero but I won't let him suffer if they can't do anything for him.
I'm so so sorry.
Absolutely wonderful post!.....thank you!
The video captures why we do what we do.
Bravo. Well told. Well shot. So moving. My Griffon is the love of my life-pick of the litter from Montana got him at 8 weeks and last weekend he just turned eight (!) years old.
Thank you...Lovely. Tears.
Beautiful
Thank you so much for sharing!
This was beautiful, thank you Orvis
My Aunt & Uncle Whelped this beautiful girl!
I am hunter and flyfisher too!!! So much love ❤️❤️❤️
Excellent video! Love for Copa!
Thanks for sharing this lovely story. :)
Thank you for your story. So beautiful your footage! I have a 12 year old Jack Russel "Pirate" and an 8 year old Bichon Maltese mix "Peiytone" Your right when you say it is hard to watch them get old. Though mine are still going strong, I know one day I will face the inevitable. I do my best to give them as much adventure, as I am capable of, and those adventures are just as good for me as they are for them. Thank you for sharing.
Just, thank you.
Beautiful!
Damn, tears..... We lost our 14yo Willow last month. Giving them that last moment of joy is the best we can do for for them.
OMG! I loved this story! #Copa
Just said goodbye to my beautiful Labrador , Sherlock - he was an XL dog w horrible arthritis at the end .
I know how hard it is to say goodbye ❤️🩹
I have a 4 year old GSP (Sako). I’d give the world to be able to take him out hunting at 14 years. Beautiful story.
Can you please share the name of the beautiful music accompanying this beautiful story???
If you are interested in the music I recommend the soundtrack to 1990 miniseries: The Civil War
Beautiful.
My eyes are sweating
Masterpiece of a dog
Wow, I agree with all the comments below! Keep in touch!
Thanks
This is beautiful. Unfortunately a lot of hunters see dogs as only tools, which is despicable.
Good Girl!!
Who gave this a thumbs down?
Great story.... I hope Lola and I can duplicate this story...
bs"d overcoming the ravages of age!!! :)
One of God’s greatest gifts to mankind…..a DOG
Orvis a hunting company doesn't show the bird being shot? Why.....
...... because its about the.....dog?
Dude … You rock! Any man who cares for a dog this much is blessed by GOD (DOG) spelled backward! I had a dog (Bandit) who I had since a puppy. He made it 13 years, but during those years, he was my best buddy. He went everywhere, and did almost everything with me. When he passed, I just lost it. I had him put to sleep in our home and in his favorite chair, in Colorado where our adventures began. I put together a little photo vid of some of those adventures. Here’s the link if you choose to check it out. ruclips.net/video/QQmsFDUcYKM/видео.html
God bless you, your family, and Copa! I pray that you and Copa have that 15th hunt once again in Montana! I will be waiting to see the sequel to this video. Take care Brotha! SUB EARNED! 👍🏼
That's so cruel to do that to that dog ! There's a time to stop and you my friend took that dog way to far ! Reality check !
