You don't turn your dark slides around after shooting so you can tell "shot" holders from "fresh" holders? Usually the tab on the end of the slide is light on one side and dark on the other for this reason; also, you can write in grease pencil on the light side of the tab as a reminder if a particular sheet needs a developing adjustment. Lord knows I've never had the slightest desire to shoot sheet film, but I learned this stuff from old-timers at the newspaper where I used to work.
Thanks James, yes 100% correct. Sorry it was an incomplete demonstration. I’ll show me using it properly in more videos going forward. (Haha yes I know LF isn’t for everyone! I strangely prefer the complications!)
Thanks for sharing your 4x5 inch large format cameras with us. My first large format camera was a Graflex 4X5 press camera with a Kodak Ektar 127mm f/4 lens. I eventually replaced it with a Calumet CC-402 wide field/short monorail 4x5 inch view camera because I needed more front/back swing/tilt/shift camera movements for more perspective control and more depth-of-field control when shooting architecture, landscapes, and product shots. I also needed a larger lens selection. I now shoot with the following lenses: 135mm f/5.6 Fujinon 90mm f/5.6 Fujinon 65mm f/8 Super-Angulon 47mm f/5.6 Super-Angulon
Thanks and nice setup. Your 402 camera sounds more like my Sinar F2 short monorail camera. I added an extension tube for more movement options. My widest lens is 75 to 250. Might be getting a small Xenar & one more.
good video Matt, but as this has a rangefinder, like the linhofs, you MUST be carefull when moving the front standard on the focus track, you push the track back into the body, so the dovetail and clamp mate squarely, otherwise the dovetail gets nicked, and any wear here means an un-intended swing movement, if you fly it over the gap, it can scratch it, so be gentle.
Thanks Andy. Much appreciated I’ve since removed the RF for size and weight (you’ll see in a future video but the MPP has really got things moving. Darkroom is now setup and I’ve ordered a bit bits for a trip soon!)
Congrats! It is cool to see we are both spiraling down into the technical camera hole lately. I purchased a Super Speed Graphic with the intention to mostly use roll film, however, as I starting to fit wider lenses on the camera, the amount of movement became very limited (even at 105mm), especially for drop bed, I can basically only do rise and tilt with the hinge getting in the way, anything wider, the front standard will fall off track. So, almost immediately, I purchased a Century Graphic, a 2x3 with mini Graflock back. While this allow mounting wider lens for 6x6 to 6x9, movement limitation is the same with its 4x5 big brother when I switch to a wide 65mm. But the worst is that the Century does not have a rotating back, so when I go vertical, movements are gone. The MPP does checks more boxes, the rear "standard" is a huge plus for not paying for a Linhoff, and its mental construction is also welcoming, but still has its limitation behind a box field camera. The Super Speed Graphic is all "bad plastic" and it just doesn't feel compelling to pick up the camera for use as compare to the tiny Century. I think I might end up selling the SSG at some point and pick up a monorail for 4x5 and keep the Century for compact travel setup.
Thanks Rex, good to hear you’re enjoying 4x5 too and sorry for the difficulties. Yes I think that’s how I ended up with 4 haha. Each does a different job!
I've just ordered one of these, a mk7. I wasn't intending to go onto large format for another year, but I've got an MPP Microcord TLR and figured the Technical would be a fun choice.
Thanks I was really lucky. After many hours of research (coming from Linhof research I discovered the MPP cameras so Google searched that specifically, found 1 list in the UK and bought it). I was lucky that it was both a great copy (it seems) and a nice shop selling it (we've been in regular contact since). More to come with this camera soon ..trip is booked!
I have a MPP Micropress with a Schneider Xenar 135mm f4.7. In England we say 5x4. I use Fomapan 200 sheet film. The Darkroom in Cheltenham develop and scan for me .
Been looking at getting into 4x5 and the MPP seem like a nice combination of quality, price and some history behind them. with a larger budget one of the classic wooden field cameras would be my first choice but they are 4x as much! I like intrepid as a company but would be nice to have something a little more sturdy and also with a bit of history behind it.
Yes I've been enjoying my MPP (but for full transparency, I've ordered an Intrepid too as for overseas trips I need something even lighter (half the weight). MPP is more precise/ solid + lens inside which I love.
Fantastic, Matt. I have a 1/2 plate rosewood and brass Thornton Pickard (original canvas field case, tripod, satin shade - red outside, black inside , 3 neg. frames) but your MPP looks lovely. Looking forward to seeing some shots.
When I was young I was dreaming of a Toyo Field 45 Camera for Landscape photography, but I kept my Hasselblad 2000 FC which is much more versatile. and always remember to close the shutter before pulling the dark slide haha. I almost bought a Technica (for the rear movements) but figured my Speed Graphic and Cambo would do for the rare times I pull out LF. one thing to note on rangefinders, you need different cams for different lens focal lengths, so the rangefinders are pretty limited. one hack I came up with which you might like: I made a posterboard box that fits against the ground glass and Graflok back with a with a small hole at the back and indexing tabs (of poster board) so I can put my cellphone up against the ground glass in the field and show compositions to the model. (used to shoot a lot of polorid in 545 back in the day, this is much cheaper. congrats great looking camera!

I’ve just found one of these cameras (a model VIII with Xenar), didn’t have the money for a Linhof and this is such a rare and interesting find around here
I do really like the slightly smaller body and additional movements on your MPP, but it might be mentioned that the Speed Graphic actually does have the option of using either the focal plane shutter or the in lens shutters
Did you find an answer for fitting to the MPP boards? I just ordered some so I can expand my lenses and now worried they won't fit, fingers crossed they're still useful!
Thanks, yes really lucky I searched and found this one. Had been listed a long time then reduced so I got a bargain. (Others probably didn’t search a specific camera like me so I found the listing. Pays to research I guess!)

I have the MKVII which I believe is a copy of the Linhof Technika. Brilliant construction and even the range finder works for my 135mm. The RAF was a customer of these cameras at one time.
Hi Matt, interesting to see your versatility with such range of film formats, I have it similar in certain aspects. In fact i am writting second time as they delete my comments with whatever brand mentioned. For linhof 4x5 interfaces and also intrepids, I prefer etone metal mounting boards avaialble on that ww largest site. They do fit well, intrepid boards do not have cut bottom corners which are sometimes needed.
I have a 1956 Graflex Crown Rapid that does not have an internal shutter, the shutter is on the lens, which does make it smaller, but unfortunately it does not have a rotating back. Your technical camera looks great, I was considering upgrading to a Linhoff, but now since I know this English camera exists, I think I will upgrade to that instead.
Great. Yes I only discovered MPP after hours of Linhof research. Seemingly they are not well known as I got myself a real bargain as it had been reduced due to lack of interest. Very happy with my find do I hope I can do it justice with some nice images. More videos to come!
Looks a bit slow but you should be able to overcome that with a high speed motor drive 🤣 I’m predicting this little experiment won’t go too far. Good fun though!!!
Thanks. Yes fair point. I love precision made old cameras that are well designed and take more thought to use so in that respect they’re very similar. I guess I’m striving to make unique ‘art’ like everyone so 4x5 gives me a few added advantages over basic film cameras.
If the photo shops and the You Tube photo boys in Europe and in the U.S.A. had as much know how on Large Format photography as you have on Leica photography, everybody would trade his Leica and buys himself a 4x5 camera. I have heard annd seen all the LF photo professors. Are they the actors of the BBC Goon Show? Mr. Matt LF Friday in the USA talks too much. He is a tiny show off. He chooses optics with a much too small image circle for his big negatives. He thinks the long bellow extension of a LF 360 mm lens at infinity, causes an extra long exposure tme. The poor guy does not understand the optical formulas. I do and can calculate them by heart, because I am an old school analog photographer. Forget the Large Fprmat professor David Hancock who keeps on killing his Cambo SC 2 camera; after he had his morning coffee on the couch, next to his farting dog. Do not see the Technika vlog, made by Linhof UK. The lady probably hates her job and treats the Technika in a way she might damage the gear box of a Land Rover. In Munich at Linhof's a voluteer is doing something obscure on a Linhof Technika. I am not afraid of the bombing my photo stdio by Linhof or Cambo. Combo was never be able to find any photo studio in Holland since the Sixties So what about Linhof? I love my Linhof cameras since 1965. Because of the quality, the models, the after sale service, the brochures and the five huge books on Linhof Photography, published by Heering. Please, do not tell anybody I also cherish my SINAR Norma; with its four bladed Copal leaf shutter. On this 20x20 cm shutter all lenses on their boards can be mounted. A funny sight to see a trio: Swiss camera plus German lens and Japaneese shutter. In the Netherlands the photographer Jan Paul Mioulet also became a photo "professor". He now does photo workshops, publishes books on photography and is a photo technical editor of the "professional" photomagazine Pf. In my opinion the Pf is a kind of funny item, because "professor" Mioulet claims cameras must have the lenses of the same brand as the camera body. So me and Mr. Stanley Kubrick did it all wrong by mounting "third party"lenses on our cameras.

For linhof 4x5 interfaces and also intrepids, I prefer etone metal mounting boards avaialble on that ww largest site. They do fit well, intrepid boards do not have cut bottom corners which are sometimes needed.
Thanks! Yes I know Linhof and Intrepid boards are said to be a similar size.
Nice, maybe some contact prints from 4x5s in the future? :)
Yess! I'm trying to stack up the excuses to setup my darkroom!
It must be 4x5 style press camera day on YT. I’ve seen 3 different videos about these style 4x5 cameras released this morning!
No way haha. Mine was slightly delayed as I was away working on the next video. (These cameras are very cheap right now)

Wow.. define “cheap”..! I’m only seeing one on evilBay for around $800 USD.
Watching this made me want to get out my Crown Graphic. Thanks.
Great! Happy if I can inspire others. Sometimes other channels inspire me!
A cracking camera 👍
Thanks! Yes very excited to discover it when researching Linhofs!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom it will be awesome! I’d love something like that! Enjoy 😊
😊
Thanks!
@7:02 you demonstrate shifting the lens but call it swinging the lens.
Apologies!
Next stop, 8x10!
Haha I hope not, I don’t have space!
Looks a bit slow but you should be able to overcome that with a high speed motor drive 🤣 I’m predicting this little experiment won’t go too far. Good fun though!!!
Ha thanks Paul! I got most of my 4x5 kit around 8yrs ago but life got in the way quite quickly. Hopefully I can give it a proper go this time!
For someone who likes collapsible lenses on a Leica, this seems like a slight change in direction.
Thanks. Yes fair point. I love precision made old cameras that are well designed and take more thought to use so in that respect they’re very similar. I guess I’m striving to make unique ‘art’ like everyone so 4x5 gives me a few added advantages over basic film cameras.
How about an unboxing of a LEICA !!!
Haha everyone has already seen those!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom maybe an M11P
Love the subject. Howcome vid is so hazy (milky)? Carry on...
Thanks Peter, more 4x5 to come. Yes sorry I think my new iPhone might have had a smear on the lens. Something I need to look out for.
Drool.
£249!! Can you believe it.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Amazing.
Heavy duty
Very much so but I like the precision too!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I totally get it😉
If the photo shops and the You Tube photo boys in Europe and in the U.S.A. had as much know how on Large Format photography as you have on Leica photography, everybody would trade his Leica and buys himself a 4x5 camera. I have heard annd seen all the LF photo professors. Are they the
actors of the BBC Goon Show?
Mr. Matt LF Friday in the USA talks too much. He is a tiny show off. He chooses optics with a much too
small image circle for his big negatives. He thinks the long bellow extension of a LF 360 mm lens at infinity, causes an extra long exposure tme. The poor guy does not understand the optical formulas. I do and can calculate them by heart, because I am an old school analog photographer.
Forget the Large Fprmat professor David Hancock who keeps on killing his Cambo SC 2 camera; after he
had his morning coffee on the couch, next to his farting dog.
Combo was never be able to find any photo studio in Holland since the Sixties
So what about Linhof?
I love my Linhof cameras since 1965. Because of the quality, the models, the after sale service, the brochures and the five huge books on Linhof Photography, published by Heering.
Please, do not tell anybody I also cherish my SINAR Norma; with its four bladed Copal leaf shutter. On this 20x20 cm shutter all lenses on their boards can be mounted. A funny sight to see a trio: Swiss camera plus German lens and Japaneese shutter.
In the Netherlands the photographer Jan Paul Mioulet also became a photo "professor". He now does
photo workshops, publishes books on photography and is a photo technical editor of the "professional" photomagazine Pf.
In my opinion the Pf is a kind of funny item, because "professor" Mioulet claims cameras must have
the lenses of the same brand as the camera body.
So me and Mr. Stanley Kubrick did it all wrong by mounting "third party"lenses on our cameras.
Thanks Jaco, great to hear you love 4x5 (and Linhof). All I can say is stay tuned! ;)
