I love that you are not afraid to use the newer low cost Chinese lenses on your Leica bodies. Some of those would be fun to shoot. Last year, I was able to shoot a Hassy 500C/M with a polaroid back. Very fun.
My favorite film cameras i own and use regularly: Pentacon Six TL (good lens selection); 6x6 and modular viewfinders Zeiss Super Iconta folder; 6x6 Kiev 4a rangefinders Olympus OM-4 Nikon F100 Canon EOS 1n
Currently getting to know the Pentax 67 (mlu). Using for fun table top product close up bellows work. It’s blooming brilliant. All the big boy feel of a Nikon F2 on bellows. So many fun accessories for it. The upright feel of an SLR.
Fantastic lists, Matt! I'm old enough to remember when 99% of these csmeras were first introduced. I drooled over each of them as i read about them in Popular Photography magazine, and was lucky enough to own a few of them. If you ever have the opportunity to handle and or shoot with a Linhof, do! They even made some rather beautiful press cameras sort of like the Graflex Xl or Mamiya press.
Thanks Michael! The Linhof votes send me down a rabbit hole. I dug out a 4x5 camera for my shoot yesterday to get back into it ..and let's just say.. stay tuned!
Hi Matt. I was super happy to see that the Nikon FM made this video! A sentimental favorite for me. I would love to have a Leica M3 but for now the cost scares me off. Maybe someday. Who knows. Thanks for another fun one.
M6 ttl for me. I love / hate this camera which makes it exciting to shoot with. I feel like I really 'earn' my keepers. Learning how to apply judgment to my image creation, especially for metering.
In 35mm, I've tried the Leica iiig. But the lenses where very expensive. So I sold it and buy a Nikon SP2... and it was the begining... Now I have the FM2, FM3a, F3 and F100. Nikkor lenses are good too. At medium format it's a great jump... I start with TLR Minolta.😊
Hey Matt! I have a few Nikon F4s cameras. I love the size and how dense they are. Of course I can't get over the single focus point, thank god there is focus and recompose. What I also have is the Contax N1 film camera. I think it was their last film camera that was made in conjunction with Contax's first and only digital that didn't work that well. For the N1 you can get a mount adapter called the NAM-1 which allows you to adapt all the Contax 645 lenses. I did this with their f4 120mm macro and the f2.8 45mm. I love both lenses. I shoot aperture priority and let meter do its job. Both the F4s and the N1 have great meters.
Thank you for this enjoyable video. In some ways, we live in a very blessed age as while some film cameras have become quite expensive (although to my mind still worth it), there are a vast number of wonderful film cameras and lenses which can be purchased very inexpensively. Although, yes, a drag film is so expensive. Your Hasselblad H portraits at the end were particularly nice.
Many of my favourites are present in this video in one way or another: Hasselbad C/F (my FC/M 2000 doesn't currently work, but I have a 500 CM on the way), Leica M6 (was sold on), Contax 645 (sold on), Hasselblad XPan (which I will sell, I love it, but I use it rarely), Olympus OM-1n/2n, Nikon FM, Nikon F3 (never owned, but who knows...), Rolleiflex 3.5E, Mamiya RZ 67, Linhof Technika (sold on), and I own a Chamonix 4x5 as well. I really should get back to film more, I have been mostly busy with my Fujifilm GFX50S recently.
Nice. My M3 double stroke is my most treasured range finder that I only drag out for special occasions due to its pristine condition....when I DO use it I devote all my attention to it and don't carry any other cameras on me when I have it in my hands! But I also have a Canon P and a Canon 7 that I will drag around with a different focal length lens on each. Sooooo, needless to see I was kind of happy to see your list. Apparently my taste isn't all that bad. :))
I use a Nikon Df as my to-go favorite camera. Coupled with small AF-D prime lenses, the shared D4 sensor gives me incredible images wrapped in a lightweight body. Its a sublime experience.
Having now tried loads of cameras, lenses and software over many decades I can categorically say that there is absolutely no substitute for sensor size. That is the one thing that really makes a difference. Obviously lenses also have a huge impact on the final result but for the pics that you like Matt you really should try (if you haven't already) the Fujifilm GFX 50S. You'll love the images. Use the native GF lenses as they are the best and don't go for the S2 cos they removed the top dials which you'll appreciate. Stunning images which you'll fall in love with. The sensor (same as in the Hasselblad x2d) creates images with a real presence. Fantastic.
Thanks Mike, I used to shoot MF Hasselblad (H camera) so I know the look they give. Sadly the amount of extra skin editing required offset the benefits so now I stick with FF. (For film however bigger is a lot of fun. More to come on that!)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I know the problem. When I worked on one of the first HD BBC docs we used the new presenter and model Jody Kydd whose skin was terrible. It was alarming and after watching the first rushes we started backing off on her close ups lol
Thanks for the list. Here is my list of the top 10 film cameras that I own or have owned: 1. Nikon F2 titanium 35mm SLR 2. Nikon F4 35mm SLR 3. Mamiya C220 medium format TLR 4. Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR 5. Fuji GW670 medium format rangefinder 6. Fuji GSW690 medium format rangefinder 7. Calumet 4x5 inch large format monorail view camera 8. Leica M6 35mm rangefinder 9. Contax G1 35mm rangefinder 10.Nikonos III 35mm underwater camera
I’m always amused when I hear the term “this camera takes beautiful photos”, because the camera itself is just a light tight box.. the photographer’s eye for composition and knowledge of exposure techniques are, in my opinion, the most important factors in image “quality”. Of course the lens characteristics are very important too. I’ve seen some amazing images created with simple, “cheap” cameras. That said, I love each of these cameras on your lists! Thank you!
My favs are the mamiya rb67 in 67 and my most amazing camera, the nikon f6 sold until october 2020! Auto focus, dead on matrix metering, 1/8000 shutter, works with my stunning nikon, zeiss and voigtlander glass, 5.5 fps. In 645, the mamiya 645 pro tl. For portraits I don't need auto focus and if I do, I'd use the f6 for those shots. With topaz gigapixel ai for upsizing, I and make stunning 16" prints and 20" with fine grain films like T grain.
Thanks and nice! I like my RZ67 too, I have the F5 and others but like the manual FM3a for my preferred manual controls. Thanks about Topaz for upsizing. I never thought about doing that for film.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom It allows great 16" or even 20"35 mm prints from fine grained b&w and portra. You sent me down the f5, f100 and finally f6 path. Just heading out to shoot the f6 and 100. Acros and portra. That f6 is one of my favorite cameras along with the RB67. I carry the RB for hours cross body on an optech strap. For street, dark slide out, film advanced, shutter lock off and no inadvertent shots because shutter not cocked. Can swing it up, cock the shutter that won't be forgotten because can't see out the viewfinder with out it, snap to focus with a split prism view finder, click. I use it for street and up to 3 hour walk abouts.
Had a 500cm but found it too agricultural so ditched it for a Fuji GW690iii as the fixed lens was fine for me. Have a few of the others but default to the M2 most of the time.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom A tad quirky but similar work flow to Leica M cameras and easier to hold than Hasselblad. The film format is a step up from 6x6, reversal images are stunning in 6x9. If you can borrow one to try it might suit you.
Your FE2 probably only needs a cleaning. My own camera, bought used 1996 started to develope a problem where it didn't want to start measuring and after some fiddling sprung back to life and now is working fine again during the last year. They just want to get used as intended.
Olympus OM-1n was my first proper camera and have rediscovered using it again in recent years with OM-2n & 4ti. Would love to see photos and video from OM cameras if you are interested in doing one 👍🏻
Nice! Stay tuned ..I may have something coming soon! :) I have the Mamiya 6 + 50/75/150 + the Nikomat. I think my 24mm is AIS and it's poor compared to the 28mm AIS.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The 28 is a 5 star lens, Nikons best. The 24 is good workhorse for me. My copy, at least, is a nice performer and is a perfect walk around lens. I really enjoy the 20-25mm range over the 28-50 range. Courses for horses.
@@linjicakonikon7666 thanks, yes my 24mm copy isn’t the best. I like that FL too. I’ve tried Nikon, Leica R and Minolta and all similar. If you use Leica M bodies check out the Snapshot Skopar 25mm f4 🤍
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for all the videos over the years. I bought my Voightlander 21 and 25 Color and Snapshot Skopar LTM lenses on the strength of what you said and showed in your photographs. They've been great.
For all of those who don't like to go with what everybody elects as a must have, and appreciate a lot all those underdogs that can give us almost or exactly the same as the holly cows of the mainstream, I leave a few suggestions: On medium format, were the most praised cameras are Rollei, Zeiss and Mamiya, I suggest the Yashica Mat 124, a good example give us excellent contrast and sharpness. Or, if size and compactness matter, the NKK Wester Autorol, a beautiful made folder 6×6. On rangefinders, as an alternative to the various Leicas M, the Canon 7s, smoth usability, large and clear viewfinder, and 4 frame lines, and to the Barnack Leicas, the Leotax F, beautifully made. On modern auto focus SLR, the Nikon F4, or the Minolta Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha 7, all the features we can think in a pre-digital era, but with the best classical interface we could wish. And also the Nikon F100. On SLR, the Leica R models are superb cameras. Yes, they have the Minolta roots, but they don't feel the same. In fact, they really have a better Leica feeling and, most of all, access to the excellent Leica glass of the R prime lenses. Also, the Olympus OM one digit series. Recently, I was looking for the right travelling digital camera, a light compact all in one swiss knife, and went for the Leica D-Lux 7, and I can only highly recommend this model. Very good interface and handling, excellent lens and image processor. I compared it to the sibling Lumix, and the same shot, took at the very same moment, look very different. All this cameras give us full results for a fraction of the cost of the praised ones. Matt, thanks for another very entertaining video and all the best
Medium format film cameras are my favourites. 35 mm cameras are toys to me. So. Mamiya RB 67, Mamiya 645, Bronica EC, Bronica ETRS, Bronica SQ, Bronica 67,Pentax 645; Pentax 67, Hasseiblad 1000f, Hasseiblad 500 cm. That's my ten. All SLRs as I hate rangefinder cameras. TLRs are fine. So Rolleicord and Rollieflex cameras are special for me as I love Schneider lenses.
so surprised at this , I am Hassy shooter and not really seen alot of others with them out and about in London .. I know watching you tube , that people were late to explore the hassie , there were far few people showcasing he hassie compared to Pentax or mamiya and even rolleiflex , not doubt as square is such different format to the norm and niche , all though you can shoot 645 too .. along with polaroid .. and 35mm pano's and even digital if you loose your mind 😁 .. the hassie is a very versatile once you learn it , I am still surprised it beat Leica and others .. but will take the win.
Yes in the last 10 yrs the Mamiya RZ etc were much more popular as the prices were a lot lower. Demand pushed those prices up. RZ is easier to focus but Hassy is a nicer size!
Crazy to me I’ve tried or owned almost every camera in your try before you die. Agree the sl66 is complicated but can produce amazing tilt shift images. Sold mine sadly. I also got sucked into the RUclipsr mamiya 7ii hype. Borrowed one for a week from a friend for trip. I did not like it. I found myself wishing I would have brought my rolleiflex 2.8f instead. The mamiya 7 for me is a dull shooting experience and the camera build feels cheap. The images I got were ok but again I just missed my Rollie. Thanks for the great video Matt!
My favorites is Nikon FE2 and F100. When I was going to buy my first serious camera, the prize for Nikon FE and Hasselblad 500 C/M was the same (1978). I choosed the Nikon, because it had exposure meter. I regret that today. P.S. This little list is from cameras I have owned.
i don't know Matt.... i find it hard to imagine the Mamiya 7ii in the setup didn't even get mentioned.... it's an amazing film camera, but i guess this is your favorites.... i get it.
Although some might not agree, the Fuji GF670 to me is SO much better than either the Mamiya 6 or Mamiya 7, not that either of those cameras are slouches. (I’ve used both and they are terrific.) Yes, the GF670 is an 80mm f/3.5 fixed lens camera, but most people use the 80mm on their Mamiya 7 or the 75mm on their Mamiya 6 as their main lens anyway. Yes, the GF670 is more on the fragile side, but then again, so are most cameras including both the Mamiya 6 & 7, which I find scratch up easily.
Correct! I'm glad it's not just me. I wrote about this on the blog some years ago (bashing the 7 and saying the GF was better. Fujinon lenses are very good on all their film cameras - GF, GS645, GA645..
You have probably addressed this but, why do you have Chinese lenses on your Leicas? As with Hasselblads, Zeiss, and Nikon the primary point of Leicas is the optics. Thank you and again... Apologies for this if you have covered it before.
Thanks. I’m not biased to lens brands and I use Leica for the cameras. Some Chinese lenses are near exact copies of rare Leica lenses so I love to use these (and others). Same great vintage optics without the collector lens huge price tag.
You have understood a very relevant thing: Nobody wants to look at a middle-aged talking head. going on and on. Your photos are a delight! I can see that you have a secret weapon that has nothing to do with your equipment. Personality.
The Canon New F-1 is a better Camera than Nikon F3 !!! I agree that M2 is better than M3 (though I do not like rangefinder cameras). But no new Cameras ?? My top 3 (of both old and new Cameras !) would be in alphabetic order Fuji GFX 100 II, Hasselblad X2D and Sony A7RV. Of old Cameras #1 are Hasselblad 200/2000 series, #2 Canon New F-1 and a lot of "#3" Cameras.
@borne-MrLeicaCom The Nikon F2 is a better Camera than the Nikon F3, there are a lot of "Nikonians" that either do not know the Canon New F-1 or they will not accept that it is better than Nikon and since you have not had any Canon New F-1 content, then the voters of it is missing 😇 (I have both Canon New F-1 and Nikon F3, so I know both Cameras very well !).
Don’t think the M6 deserves a top 10 due to the lower quality parts plastic bits and zinc top plate. Top 3 are interchangeable: 3. M2 / M-A 2. FM3A 1. MP
For film I pick Leica M5 , most peoples don’t used it ,and don’t know it . Try M5 then you will love it , more accurate , true Leica built ( better built than all the later M cameras ) better , bigger viewfinder , clearer and accurate light meter ( spot light meter instead of centre weight / general ) not heavy as peoples say .
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha ............... You must be joking. You love the Linhof, because of the fact they are a bit of a Leica. So you think a Linhof is quite compact. You are wrong by saying the Linhof cameras are made by German prtecision. "Linhof cameras are made by Bavarian precision; which standard is a bit higher", in my opinion. You might know the brands: Rodenstock lenses, Kraus Tiger tanks, Hofbrau beer, Compur shutters, BMW cars, Metz electronic flash, Perutz film and Dirndl dress. Linhof Technika cameras are made in four format sizes: 2 x 3 4 x 5 5 x 7 8 x 10 inch. The continental 6 x 9 9 x 12 13 x 18 18 x 24 cm double flm holders will fit into the international back of the cameras. As well as a single film holder, mounted in its insert. Plus Pola backs and roll film backs. Do not mess around with cm and inch sheet films and film holders. You need a 300 mm or a 360 mm lens for a portrait.
Haha I'm guessing you don't like Hassy. I just reported what people voted on the previous video so it's just the facts from those watching this channel.

Gracias Matt!!
Mi camara favorita es sin duda la *M3* y las Barnaks.
Buen video..
Great!
Love this top 🔝 ten!! Only one of my favourites is not listed, but anyways I agree with the cameras in the list!! Regards, Matt
Thanks Victor!
Had a 500cm but found it too agricultural so ditched it for a Fuji GW690iii as the fixed lens was fine for me. Have a few of the others but default to the M2 most of the time.
Thanks Nick, nice! I looked at those Fuji cameras a lot in the past too!
Thanks. No my FE2 is fine, the FM3a was just a long term purchase.
1:57 what does Matt say here…? 😂
Modern for 1954?
Olympus OM-1n was my first proper camera and have rediscovered using it again in recent years with OM-2n & 4ti. Would love to see photos and video from OM cameras if you are interested in doing one 👍🏻
Great. Yes if I get to play with an Olympus OM in the future i'll be sure to make a video!
My favorite 5 ever:
1) Linhof 617s Technorama
2) Mamiya 6 w/ 50f4
3) Nikomat FTn w/ Pre Ai 24mmf2.8 Nikkor
4) Canon VT Deluxe w/ Voightlander 21mmf4 Color Skopar LTM
5) Canon F1n (1973) w/ FD Canon 24 f2.8 s.s.c
@@linjicakonikon7666 thanks. I just bought a Linhof thanks to you guys commenting! Stay tuned!
Rolleiflex 2.8 yes add to cart 😀you should test one please...
Ha thanks Thomas! I know some people love these. If I get a chance to use one i'll make a video for sure!
Thanks for your input!
Thanks Neil! I've never used a Bronco but I hear their RF 645 camera was good too.
oops i think you did mention the Mamiya 7 / and love the Hassy SWC
No problem! Yes I tried to like the Mamiya 7! The SWC is fantastic!
so surprised at this , I am Hassy shooter and not really seen alot of others with them out and about in London ..
Thanks and funny that we walked a similar path!
Thanks. Wow I can’t imagine Nikon and Hassy being the same price! 1978 was the year I was born.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom And it was a complete camera; body, magazine A12, Planar 80/2.8.
Leica M2 and Leica M3, classical, reliable, trustful, charismatic. Made in Germany 😃
Yes! You can't go wrong with either of them!
i don't know Matt.... i find it hard to imagine the Mamiya 7ii in the setup didn't even get mentioned.... it's an amazing film camera, but i guess this is your favorites.... i get it.
Thanks, this list was just the viewers favourites (see the previous video for my top 20)
Matt, Mamia 7 (6), definitively beats hasselblad in terms of portability, ergonomics, rangefinders?.... But reliability! Hass is a clear winner.
Yes I used my Mamiya 6 for weddings for speed but the Hassy is good long term.. Anything without batteries is always nice!
Hasselblad 503CX + Pentax LX.
Nice!
You have understood a very relevant thing: Nobody wants to look at a middle-aged talking head. going on and on. Your photos are a delight! I can see that you have a secret weapon that has nothing to do with your equipment.
Personality.
Thanks! Yes my old videos are talking head but I continue to learn and try to improve/make videos more watchable!
Thanks! I know some people like the New F-1 but it didn't get enough votes for the top 10. I only covered film cameras in this one.
Top 3 are interchangeable:
3. M2 / M-A
2. FM3A
1. MP
Thanks yes for me M3/M2 are top for M cameras (but i've not owned the MA/MP) FM3a is great.
Thanks, yes I know they became more popular in the last 3 yrs or so as also one of the cheapest. If I try one sometime i'll make a video.
Love the M5, best M camera ever made.
The M4 comes in second place.
another greta video......
Thank you!
You sold the best of the bunch, the SL66. Shame, especially after we got a taste of what you did with it....
Yes great camera but too complicated for my little brain. I kept jamming it. I can use my 4x5 for the tilt look in future.
Can you speak clearly, sound terrible, get someone else please 🙏
Sorry for the bad audio. You can find written reviews on MrLeica.com if you prefer
For me it was always Hasselblads. I used them professionally for 25+ years, they never let me down.
Thanks Paul, they are great!
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha ...............
You must be joking.
You love the Linhof, because of the fact
they are a bit of a Leica.
So you think a Linhof is quite compact.
You are wrong by saying the Linhof cameras are
made by German prtecision.
"Linhof cameras are made by Bavarian precision;
which standard is a bit higher", in my opinion.
You might know the brands: Rodenstock lenses, Kraus Tiger tanks,
Hofbrau beer, Compur shutters, BMW cars, Metz electronic flash,
Perutz film and Dirndl dress.
Linhof Technika cameras are made in four format sizes:
2 x 3 4 x 5 5 x 7 8 x 10 inch.
The continental 6 x 9 9 x 12 13 x 18 18 x 24 cm
double flm holders will fit into the international back of
the cameras. As well as a single film holder, mounted
in its insert. Plus Pola backs and roll film backs.
Do not mess around with cm and inch sheet films
and film holders.
You need a 300 mm or a 360 mm lens for a portrait.
Thanks Jaco! I had no idea how expensive they were! BUT.. I found a loop hole.. stay tuned ;)
Your audio needs work
Sorry I moved the mic away to fit the cameras. See recent videos for better audio.
I'm not sure if anyone asked this extremely important question: what camera do girls like to undress in front of?
They have no interest haha
Bullshit
Haha I'm guessing you don't like Hassy. I just reported what people voted on the previous video so it's just the facts from those watching this channel.
ruclips.net/video/ETezhdraH8c/видео.htmlsi=-DxdvyPrkTCI4cp3&t=206 What's going on with the weird circular bokah here? Is that a Summicron?
