- The TAEC research team first met Hmong musician, Mr. Tongthor Vatou (or Tong), after he performed for a large audience during the Hmong New Year festival in Luang Prabang. The team was there documenting music and wind instruments for TAEC's newest special exhibition, "Voices of the Wind: Traditional Instruments in Laos".
Tong is originally from Xieng Khouang Province and came to Luang Prabang a few years ago to study English at the local university. Feeling nostalgic and missing his family and community, Tong decided to learn how to play the raj nplaim (pronounced tja plai) with a friend from the university. The raj nplaim is a very popular Hmong instrument and it can be used to communicate by mimicking spoken language - watch here • Hmong "Raj Nplaim" - T... . You can see that Tong has personalised his instrument with stickers between the fingers holes, and a plastic bottle working as an amplifier for a more robust sound!

interesting fact, he's not only expressing his feelings but like he said he is speaking through this instrument. Unlike any other musical instrument, Hmong musical instruments are used to speak word to word in a poetic way that could be understood by others what they are saying. It doesn't have a lyric, it makes the lyric if that make any sense and it doesn't have a melody.
very true
One of the way to tell the love one that how much he loves her or she loves him.

I loved the sound of that instrument...!😆❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing...sounds so khoj siab..makes me think of their ⛰ mountainous🌄 landscape.
Players of this flute speak through the flute with words. It will take months to listen to in order for you to know most of what they say. The Hmong people like to play this flute for dating especially at nighttime in rural villages. Also, this flute is usually played to say that “I have left my mom, my dad, my family and my girlfriend far, far away behind. I moved to this new village and birds are chirping, insects are making noises, and I don’t have anybody here in this new village that knows and loves me, it’s so sunny…and I am missing my mom, my dad, my family and my girlfriend who live so far away so, so very much..”

Wow I love it
Its a chinese bamboo flute(Dzi), but modified a little bit by us hmong...the reed is made of copper!! hmong mostly uses to play folk and epithalamium songs
Its a hmong bamboo flute, made by hmong. Just because a katana is in china doesnt mean its made by a japanese, ofc they might have been the first to design it but that doesnt mean every swords you design afterward that looks similiar to a katana will always give all of its hardwork and credit to a japanese swordsmith who was the first one that design the katana, if you understand that lol.
I wouldn't compare it to the dizi flute because the dizi doesn't have the reed. The instrument it is the most similar to would be the bawu flute.
Wow!!! Good job

This young Hmong here play reall good
Hmong never play Raj nplaim for Hmong festival or new year this is Hmong transitional music to call the girl to wake up the early morning
Actually people now do use the raj nplaim for New Year in some regions. I saw it several times in Luang Prabang. Roles of instruments changes with modifications of mores. Young people don't really use music to call girls anymore in many places, but still use the instruments in other contexts. New Year for example.

Suab Zoo you’re an idiot lol.
I think you have this confused this with rab ncas. Raj nplaim would be too loud and will get the complaints of the neighbors if you were to use it to wake up your girlfriend in the early hours of the morning.
Hahaha one thing he didn't tell you is that play to have a date, often time play very early in the morning to wake up a girl or play after dawn to notify a girl that you are around out there.
He actually told us, we did very long interviews with him. While the instrument is often, played to speak with a girl, he doesn't really do it himself. He prefers playing to enjoy with friends or during New Year :)
In the yesteryears it’s used to wake up girls, but nowadays you can use this instrument to express your feelings, wether it’s sad, happy, lonely, bore etc...
Marie Pierre appreciate what you did here don’t stop what you’re doing.
@@kaummuas3786 what kind of English language you learn from, maybe from Russian instructor lol
Vaj Choj if you speak English properly you would know that I’m talking about. Judging from your reply you’re not educated!!
vereygood👍I love too
That too short needs to play a lot longer to understand what is mean.
that is why he flute to buffelo ear
