Meet Davone, Lanten Artisan reviving traditional patterns & designs
TAEC Co-Director, Tara, introduces Davone (Doiyi) Seualikhamxay, a Lanten (Yao Mun) artisan from Namdee Village.
Behind Tara and Davone in the video and photos are examples of Lanten priest’s robes from TAEC’s collection. These two pieces are older (approximately 100 years old) and newer (18 years old) versions of a tao kong high priest’s robe. There are different “levels” of Lanten priests; the lower two levels of priests wear plain robes, and the highest two levels wear embroidered robes such as these. Even then, the robes are reserved for special occasions such as funeral ceremonies and important offerings.
The robe directly behind them was created in 2008 by a woman named Duangta and ...

TAEC TALKS | How HMong Speak with Music (Literally) by Neng Thao
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.Год назад
HMong music is an exceptionally unique intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Of the approximately 7,000 languages that exist in the world, the HMong language is the only one to mimic its spoken language through the use of all types of HMong music, enabling HMong musicians to literally speak with what sounds like just instrumental music to outside ears. As such, HMong music not only gives us...

TAEC TALKS | Sibling Rivalry: Letters between Souvanna Phouma & Souphanouvong by Dr. Wolfson-Ford
Просмотров 3612 года назад
At the height of the Cold War a major confrontation was emerging in the landlocked Southeast Asian nation of Laos. To the United States, it looked as if Laos would fall to communism without direct intervention. And to make matters worse, the prime minister Souvanna Phouma was going “soft” on the North Vietnamese-backed Pathet Lao who were led by none other than his half-brother Souphanouvong. W...
TAEC TALKS | Concrete Aspirations in Northern Laos by Dr. Rosalie Stolz

How are concrete buildings transforming the uplands of northern Laos? How does the shift represent the aspirations of Khmu speakers? Concrete is on the rise and cement, the 'world’s most used material, after water’ (Archambault 2018), is leaving imprints on the built landscape around the world. Associated with modernity and aspirations (Forty 2016), concrete is prevalent in transformations of h...

We know that a new paradigm is needed, but how can it work? ...

Players of this flute speak through the flute with words. It will take months to listen to in order for you to know most of what they say. The Hmong people like to play this flute for dating especially at nighttime in rural villages. Also, this flute is usually played to say that “I have left my mom, my dad, my family and my girlfriend far, far away behind. I moved to this new village and birds are chirping, insects are making noises, and I don’t have anybody here in this new village that knows and loves me, it’s so sunny…and I am missing my mom, my dad, my family and my girlfriend who live so far away so, so very much..”
