I remember back in the DAZE I have no idea now. Frank Zappa played in Austin, TX. He had been warming up. He then came and sat down by me and we chapped a bit. I asked him about a song he had done, probably "Suzy Creamcheese." I only remember the line "caress me" then. When I asked him about it. He said something to the effect. "I don't remember much of anything." I said, "neither do I" back in the DAZE! I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time!
But at the same time; had a great sense of humor. He didn't let the anger of whatever or whoever he was pissed off with consume him to the point where they became an obsession and owned him.
I love this interview . Having said that , I think Barry is a bit star struck and all ears , considering Frank is a " Brother in Arms" for R&B music. This is not their "Last Rodeo". Great interview guys.DD
I don't begrudge Dr. Demento's shtick. I loved Frank Zappa. He said what he thought and if you didn't like it you could piss up a rope. Today it's nothing but crybabies and thought police.
It's clear that this interview was highly edited. I wonder if the master tapes of what was stated is available anywhere now? I'm sure the insights would be fascinating. The irony is, of course, Zappa did hit the Billboard Hot 100 with two atypical songs: "Dancin' Fool" which reached 45 in 1979, presumably before this interview, and his duet with daughter Moon, "Valley Girl" which reached 32 in 1984. But what is the most disappointing to me is Dr. Demento avoiding a discussion of his specialized edit of a Zappa classic which became known on the Demento Show as "Beepers And Beer."
Mick Jagger said he'd kill himself if he was still singing stuff like Satisfaction at 40? Hell he's 70 something still singing those songs, but what else we're they gonna do. Quit playing Rock n Roll and open an Ice Cream parlor! Anyone have any idea what year this was?
Frank Zappa was right about the drugs. I only disagree with one point ~ tobacco is a drug, not a vegetable. Thanks for the music and wisdom FZ. I'm saying this after smoking a spliff at 6:45Am and waiting for my left over pizza to heat up ~ back to the music : D
I met Dr D at Rainbo records in Santa Monica, I had been a fan of the Sunday night show on KMET. That all came to an abrupt halt when KMET suddenly switched to "Elevator Music" overnight. That's when I decided money was the only driving force for 99% of humans, and people would kill their own Mother if it means they would get enough money. Humans are disappointing.
Shore miss me some Frank... but his ''Frank-ness'' of the truth... lives on thru his music. ''THERE ARE ARTISTS WHO CAN WREST US UP, & PLACE US INTO THEMSELVES. THESE ARE THE ONE'S WHO CONTINUE TO WREST US UP... EVEN BEYOND THEIR RESTS IN PEACE.'' -gilpin 81219

I love how young Dr. Demento looks here, and their (lack of) chemistry. They make a gorgeous odd couple ... and Frank's losing his shit a little bit at the end there as Dr. D does his bump message in that wonderful phony voice
Doing drugs is bad, he often spouted in interviews yet he was a chain smoker and a control freak. Still, I like his music and some of his counter culture stances. Hey, nobody's prefect.
@Lalo3001 Well, that isn't quite right. Zappa actually wrote Valley Girl. Moon Unit supplied Frank with the Lyrics, her voice and the idea to the song, but Frank composed the music. Another fact is, that Bobby Brown was hugely successful in Europe. I'm from Germany and even the big mainstream radiostations here still play this song once in a while. (which I think is awful: ...Brian Adams - Bobby Brown - Lady Gaga...) not...enough...space...hang on....
Yerbouti was the last FZ Mothers release I bought. I listened to it once or twice but that loud band did not compare to the Roxy or One Size Fits All or 200 Motels era bands.
@ronson232 he would have been 71 on 12-21- 2011 I've learned so much from his compositions. shut up and play your guitar and baby snakes and apostrophe are just some of the albums I think influenced my playing most.

In my case I have severe dislike AND antipathy for most North-Americans. I don't wanna kill them, that's just silly.
