    On rare occasions I think how lucky I was to have watched these each week during the 60’s. What an innocent time it was. And if I’m not mistaken, it’s was on twice a week.

      Yeah twice a week so the cliffhanger was always resolved that week.

    I enjoyed Frank Gorshin as the Riddler. Nobody can imitate his laugh. He's one of a kind. Riddle me this. Riddle me that.

    This episode 'Death in Slow-Motion' is non-stop hilarity. The part where the giant book falls on Batman & Robin and The Riddler replays it over and over kills me every time.

    Gorshin was a skilled impressionist, That was his claim to fame before the Batman series. to create his character, he took the Riddler's physicality from James Cagney, and his meter and intonation from Kirk Douglas, the laugh was exaggerated from a movie starring William Holden. Holden let out a maniacal laugh as he shoved a wheelchair-bound woman down a steep staircase, The laugh was SO chilling, the Censors of the time had it permanently excised from the movie, but Gorshin had heard it and later made good use as The Riddler.
    What made his Riddler VERY creepy was the way he switched rapidly from deadly almost depressive calm to manic unrestrained mirth and back again.
    Caesar Romero as the Joker was Good, Frank Gorshin as The Riddler was GREAT.

    • @robertmcpherson1617
      @robertmcpherson1617 Год назад +3

      I was about to comment on Gorshin's ability to switch from maniacal glee to deadly seriousnessbeing unnerving but you beat me to it!🤣

    • @Voodoomaria
      @Voodoomaria Год назад +4

      @@robertmcpherson1617 Jim Carey's portrayal was over the top and manic ALL the time, and that's Carey's style, But Gorshin, switching from calm to insane, going from ecstatic heights, to crushing depression to pure rage, He was nuanced in a way that Carey wasn't and so Careys portrayal just seemed flat. One dimensional.
      Gorshin's Riddler came off as completely insane [and believably so], even the other villains, Joker included could not rein him in [See the Batman Movie 1967] and it was his barely controlled insanity that made him Dangerous.

    • @robertmcpherson1617
      @robertmcpherson1617 Год назад +4

      @@Voodoomaria I concur. Gorshin's ability to go from over the top, even staggering uncontrollably to deadly, frightening intent made him the scariest and best villain of them all (1966 Batman)! I still get creeper out! It cements him as a truly remarkable actor!

    • @Voodoomaria
      @Voodoomaria Год назад

      @@robertmcpherson1617 Watch the movie "Public Enemy" 1931 starring James Cagney, watch his body movements especially in the Prison scene where he's told his mother has died.
      You will see exactly where Gorshin got his stance and that staggering motion.
      It's that same loss of motor control denoting descent into madness.
      The actors and actresses they selected to play batman Villains in that series were all at one time A-List talents, and it REALLY shows in their performances.
      My personal favourite Batman bad Guy just for his comedic value was "King Tut" played by Victor Buono. His comedic delivery was absolutely FLAWLESS.
      And, the thing was, this wasn't the END of their careers, From '66 to '69 you weren't ANYBODY in Hollywood unless you got at least a window cameo in Batman.
      It was one of the hottest shows on television at the time.

      @deepseadirt1 Год назад +1

      all the comments on Frank's portrayal are spot on, great. He brought this villain to life. One thing, his laugh is strikingly similar to the maniacal laugh of Richard Widmark in KISS OF DEATH(1947). Frank and Widmark even bear a resemblance though Widmark was 18 years older. I can't remember if Riddler was created just for the series and has since thrived in the comics, animation and films. Mr. Freeze may have been created just for the series also. I'm not sure, but I digress.

    Quite an amazing atmosphere when he acts his mind is sparkling and makes his performance truly the best Riddler ever Frank was a brilliant comedian and imperonater and musician and he could often over act as the Riddler, but that was made him the best. I remember him in Star Trek, I believe more than a few times, and I think he voiced in the animated version to, and Batman cartoon as well? And wasn't he in Fantasy Island the original. And he also was Lois and Clark Superman original series? And Murder, She Wrote. He also had his own TV series years ago, and was he in Happy Days?

    That man lived the part long before Jim Carrey. His laughter, his deep thought moments, even his ecstatic energy when he jumps around. Hell, I think his costume is the same one that made it into Batman Forever.
