Recent video clip of a Jeff Baxter interview, he says that while working at Manny's, Jeff traded his friend Jimi's worn out Duo Sonic for a white Strat and took shitte from his boss for the "bad" deal.
It’s incredible looking back that as late as late 1966 Hendrix could still say ‘I don’t own my own guitar’! I remember for years playing borrowed guitars and pretty much anything I could get my hands on. I knew a guy who went backpacking for a year and he lent me his Ibanez fretless bass - wow that transformed my technique. Happy accidents!
I always thought Hendrix’s white strat was a gift from Keith Richards! Bear in mind these were worth a small fortune back in the 1960s, a decent Stratocaster would be worth several months’ wages. Hendrix never really found a left handed Strat that he liked, and of course they were extra expensive because of rarity. I always felt his unique sound was partly down to the upside-down thing with the pickups - it always sounded to me like he was playing with a phaser!
It's been reported long ago that Jimi played his old Epiphone for the studio version of "Red House". Also, the pickups were being held on with Scotch tape.
@@trevorgwelch7412 the ground guitar website says yes he does in his autobiography but most of what he remembers seems to be coming from Linda. "In her enthusiasm, during a long evening with Jimi, as she tells it, she gave him a Fender Stratocaster of mine that was in my hotel room. And then, so Linda says, she also picked up a copy of a demo I had of Tim Rose singing a song called “Hey Joe.” And took that round to Roberta Goldstein’s, where Jimi was, and played it to him. This is rock-and-roll history.".......And rumor has it those 2 got together round 1969 and wrote a song.
Hendrix had many Strats most of them white and they all vanished right after his death.I read that he had several Strats in his place in New York, some at his Electric Lady land studio and his apartment in London. This way he had them wherever he went so he had more than a dozen. Only four are accountable today nobody knows where the rest are.
Jimi's "black beauty" Strat was with him when he passed away. Monika Danneman took it and it's now in the possession of her family. That Strat and a 1968 Martin D-45 where Jimi's favourite guitars, Mitch claimed the D-45 was his favourite above them all!.

Parts of it could very well been made in 1963. Tough to say without seeing the neck stamp. If the necks were made in advance and placed on a rack maybe the decals were not applied until the end. But since it has a transition decal which started in June 64 it probably was sold after that. And confusingly some strats as late as 65 came with the old logo. Guess they found some tucked away and used up what they had. lol
Strung normal and flipped, like Albert King, gives a pull down bend on strings too thick for a push up for many players. Tonality in fingers is affected by this switch.
Didn't Mitch Mitchell end up owning that Woodstock played guitar? Remember hearing him selling it for $325K, then it was resould for close to a million?
@@brianwells4507 yes he was definitely given a white strat with maple fingerboard which he later sold at auction but I think there is some controversy whether that's the Woodstock one. I have not really looked into that.
Mitch had the "Woodstock" Strat when Jimi died, he sold it to an Italian collector who I turn sold it to Paul Allen where it now resides as the crown piece in the Experience Music Project in Seattle.
@brianwells4507 Sadly no!. It should've read ",,,,,an Italian collector who IN turn sold it to Paul Allen,,,,,," . Weird "auto-correct"!. Jimi literally had over a hundred Stratocaster's alone, his two favourites electrics after '68 where the maple cap '68's in black and white, apart from the occasional Flying V he played those two almost exclusively on stage until he died. If his "black beauty" Strat ever came onto the market it would undoubtedly break all records for highest auction sales price. some would argue the greatest solo of all time was performed with it on New year's eve 69/70 at the Fillmore East during "Machine Gun".
I play ed right handed guitars for a couple of decades, didn't have the money for a left handed guitar, so I learned to play normal guitars upside down as Hendrix and a few o there also did...But... In my case, the strings stayed in their right handed configuration..!! Hendrix did not play that way, he switched the strings to what a left handed guitar would have, thin strings at the bottom heavy strings at the top ..... So please change your info, you can plainly see the Linda guitar does not have the heavy base E at the bottom, but at the top.!!
Jimi was right handed but could play both ways. The reason he played left handed was because when you do the switch the pods are out of the way of the picking hand. Also the machine head tuning keys hang down and are more comfortable to tune.
I glad you said that...not many people know that. There is serval pictures with him writing w/ his right hand. But they say he could use both. Who knows,lol...
Back then teachers forced left-handed kids to write right-handed. It stems back to the belief that the left hand was the devil's side. Nuns were hitting kids who wrote left-handed with a ruler or cane still in the 60s-70s . If you look at his handwritten notes the characters lean as if a left-hander wrote them even though he wrote with the right.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver google pictures of him signing autographs, writing in the studio, and doodling on notebook paper. Also there was a video of him in the studio with Alan Douglas writing something.
I've never seen that "interview" with Jimi before, outstanding !.

I think it was labeled Dallas 1969.

I think a Strat without the case cost about $325 in 1966. Rent for an apartment on Park avenue in NYC in 1966 was about $125 per month!!
About 1500.00 today
My fav strat colour - Olympic white and a mint pickguard. Im building my partscaster based on Jmi's Linda strat
Awesome! I want one, gotta unload a couple first. 🤣
Ditto, along with John Lennon's black strat with the matching head stock.
Mark Knopfler's Arctic White with tort pickguard.
