@@j_edwards6075 I can't answer for everyone else but, for me personally, I didn't like how they treated Indy's character. He wasn't the hero of his own movie. They made him a miserable old man who'd basically given up on life at the end, and that's not the way you treat a beloved character. Then there's the character of Helena... whom I enjoyed upon first meeting her... but who turns out to be so narcissistic and self-serving that I couldn't stand her. They try to redeem her at the end, but it didn't work. I just couldn't stand that character by the end of the film, so there was no recovering from that (for ME anyway). I just wanted better for Indy than what we got. They probably should've just left it well enough alone at Last Crusade and ended it there. That's a much better ending than either 4 or 5, in my opinion anyway.

They just wanted Star Wars, and the money it brought in. They really don't care what happens, as long as that cash keeps rolling in. There are enough people out there who will watch anything carrying the Star Wars logo, and pay for it, no matter how poor the actual material is. I was talking to some friends in the pub before Christmas, and we reckoned that, if Disney put out a movie called: 'Jar-Jar: A Star Wars Story', a lot of people would pay to watch it.
Disney hated Star Wars in the past, because a new movie, or even a reissue of an old one, would stomp all over anything Disney were showing off at the time. Owning the Star Wars franchise meant that Disney got all the cash. But also got greedy, and flooded the market, somewhat. They probably see that as a minor setback.

I personally thought The Force Awakens also sucked. And I'm always surprised when I hear Star Wars fans who liked it. It was a completely generic, paint-by-numbers rehash of the original trilogy. It took zero risks, so I had zero emotional attachment.
What we need is new characters, new themes, and new stories. We don't need rehashes. After The Last Jedi took some risks and failed, Disney seems to have learned the wrong lesson. The best Star Wars content since the original trilogy is Andor. And that show took a ton of risks. Do more of that.

In defence of Paramount here, the industry had zero clue that Barbieheimer was going to stellar at the box office. Same goes for Sound of Freedom. *Every* metric going pointed to Barbie not doing great, Oppenheimer doing OK and Sound of what now?
The only reason why those films did what they did (outside of their quality etc) was because of their unexpected viral campaigns.
Then add on that people do not have as much cash since Covid started and they are much more selective. So they plumped for the films that had the most press.

Let me be blunt: I am not convinced the MCU is failing simply because it favours political messaging over compelling storytelling, makes television into homework, lacks a focal protagonist(s) to bring the series together in light of the departure Ironamn and most of the Avengers, or that Disney is oversaturating the market; rather, I suspect it is due to the intervals between individual hero films growing too long. It sounds fantastic to have three films and five series a year, but then you realise that none of the heroes in those films or shows will see their personal story directly progress for another five or six years.

The main problem with the Star Wars sequel trilogy is that there were too many people at the helm with differing visions of what the plot was going to be. Plot mistakes like Retconning Rey’s family from just being nobodies to being essentially related to the Big Bad and bringing Palpatine back to life when there is essentially no foreshadowing for it are the signs that there were more than one script writers and editors that were writing contradictory plot lines.

People complain about killing off protagonists in Alien movies when that's literally the point. Alien is not a nice story with a happy ending, it's your worst nightmare.
You're stuck with a monster in the middle of cold void of space, death is the best you'll get in an universe where life is to be put through heII because you need work from a murderous company. Survival doesn't mean anything because there's no reason to go through deadly situations just to get a paycheck and still be under that same company.
This nihilist view is what makes lovecraftian horror so overwhelming, the realistic nature of dying from anything just puts the alien as a symbol of all of that.

There's a reason they called it The Dark Phoenix *SAGA*. It's never, EVER, going to work as a one shot film. If they try it again, then it needs to be its own spinoff trilogy. At least. Also, in Alien³'s defence, Weaver wanted out. She asked for Ripley to be written out. Which is why so many of us were shocked when Resurrection happened and she was onboard.

Dark Phoenix wasn't supposed to be one film. It was supposed to be a whole trilogy directed by Bryan Singer. That's the whole reason why the X-Men cast renewed their contracts which doesn't expire until 2027 (meaning Marvel is not allowed to recast the characters until then). But then Fox was put up for sale, so the studio lost faith, Singer left and allowed Simon Kinberg to do whatever he wanted before the rights were transferred to Marvel.

Dark Horse comics did an excellent sequel to Aliens called Aliens: Earth War. It follows Hicks, Newt, and Ripley nearly twenty years after the events of Aliens. It was an amazing story. When Fox made Alien 3, Dark Horse had to reprint the comic and change the names of Hicks and Newt. There were several other great comics from Dark Horse that would have made excellent movies to continue the franchise but Fox was too stupid by not using them. They also ruined the chances of there being a great AvP franchise with the way they did those two movies.

The "Franchise" philosophy of film making is what is killing off good film making. The original Alien and Star Wars were not made as the first installments of a half a dozen movies to be made over the course of fifteen years. They were cutting edge, great one off movies made by directors who never thought they were going to be making any more than that one film. The movies were huge hits first, and then came the sequels because peopled desired more. Now everything is planned too far in advance by the studios. You've got to have one good movie before you can have three...

I'd been enjoying the films - have the entire first block of phases up to endgame on Blu-Ray - and then suddenly a load of content shifted over to TV on subscription only, which you HAD to see to understand a lot of what is going on in the films. The occasional spinoff with semi-related but not vital material is fine (I'm looking at you the awesome Agents of Shield) but now just too much too far. Pretty much the same with Star Wars too.

The Force Awakens was hot garbage from the start. Rey being able to do a difficult Jedi power without even knowing about it. Why would she try a Jedi Mind Trick without even knowing it was a thing??? Making Han Solo a deadbeat dad. Repackaging A New Hope with a bigger, scarier Death Star. Making Rey a mary sue. I could go on and on.
That trilogy was doomed after the first movie.

  • @WhatTheFirstAidSpray

Phew, so much to unpack RE Alien. The problem with the Alien series is not that it kills off beloved characters, though that doesn't help matters much. Alien3 had far better versions of the movie proposed, and it was the drawn out and mishandled nature of the path that led to the version we got that was the core problem. Then with Alien Resurrection, the story was fumbled and it was very much a product of its time.
Fast forward to Prometheus, and the fan backlash that it wasn't enough of an Alien movie led to Covenant being made as very much an Alien movie rather than the exploration of the Engineers that it was originally intended to be. Cue more fan backlash that it wasn't Prometheus enough.
Shaw's death was the result of the intended story thread being severed. Hicks and Newt died because there had to be no way of corroborating Ripley's story. And Ripley had to be shoehorned back into Resurrection because they wanted her star power and the legacy behind her appearances in the franchise, thus making her death pointless in 3. The writers just didn't have much of a coherent story to tell after Aliens, and have been fumbling their collective way through the sequels and spinoffs ever since.

Hmmm... Just because people didn't go see them doesn't mean that the movies were bad.
Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - My wife grabbed my arm and didn't let go until the movie was done. It was a good movie.
Indiana Jones - The Dial of Destiny - I liked it a lot. Perhaps having the woman compete with Indiana Jones to be the show's lead was the bad idea.
Hmmm.2 - The MCU would be still be making amazing amounts of money if they hadn't gone woke. They have access to 80 years of great stories to make movies from. Just keep the quality high and stop selling us your religion and you'll get immediately back to making the big bucks again.
As a personal favor, please make a movie about Fantastic Four issue #2.

Star Wars ep7-9 were bad not because of the story, but because of the "modern message" of female empowerment and the destruction of legacy characters. MiB latest movie suffers greatly because of the same thing. Mission impossible wasn't that bad, just kind of predictable and boring. Indiana Jones was awful because of the insufferable new female lead that made it unbearable to watch and belittling Indy's character altogether (de-aged Indy was actually the only part of the movie that felt like Indiana Jones movies). Marvel became awful after introduction of M-she-U. Lord of the rings had completed the story and nowadays even Hobbit bloated trilogy is miles ahead of Amazon's "Rings of Power". Call it for what it is and stop making excuses.

The problem with Mission Impossible is it's never been very good. They have been a series of entertaining set pieces strung around fairly lame plotlines and a leading man who has sort of aged out of being believable in the role. At a certain point you get a bit sick of a franchise built around set pieces and want a more coherent plot that carries some weight but a bit like the Fast Franchise they have come to rely of the set pieces so much that everything in a film is done to get to the next one rather than the set pieces being the result of a natural organic plot.
