It took zero risks, so I had zero emotional attachment. What we need is new characters, new themes, and new stories. We don't need rehashes. After The Last Jedi took some risks and failed, Disney seems to have learned the wrong lesson. The best Star Wars content since the original trilogy is Andor. And that show took a ton of risks. Am I the only one who thinks critics harp on CGI way too much? I don’t think general audiences care about practical effects v. CGI as much as they think. Every critic seems to think that CGI is ruining lives and audiences do not like CGI, but good or bad, most of the highest grossing movies are CGI laden extravaganzas!

And yes, she's been around since the original Spider-Man trilogy, so she's to blame just as much as Avi Arad.
In defence of Paramount here, the industry had zero clue that Barbieheimer was going to stellar at the box office. Same goes for Sound of Freedom. *Every* metric going pointed to Barbie not doing great, Oppenheimer doing OK and Sound of what now? The only reason why those films did what they did (outside of their quality etc) was because of their unexpected viral campaigns. Then add on that people do not have as much cash since Covid started and they are much more selective. So they plumped for the films that had the most press.
More bad interpretation, the problem with MCU are not C@ping Feige or too much content, it is using people that DO NOT like comics to write the scrips ... ( a frind of mine just pointed out that the responsibility must go to Cr@ping Feige, because he allow this BAD writers to do ... well ... write all of this trash, and he is right )
Let me be blunt: I am not convinced the MCU is failing simply because it favours political messaging over compelling storytelling, makes television into homework, lacks a focal protagonist(s) to bring the series together in light of the departure Ironamn and most of the Avengers, or that Disney is oversaturating the market; rather, I suspect it is due to the intervals between individual hero films growing too long. It sounds fantastic to have three films and five series a year, but then you realise that none of the heroes in those films or shows will see their personal story directly progress for another five or six years.
Rian Johnson’s ego got in the way and he completely threw off the continuity of the sequel trilogy. Don’t get it twisted, episode 7 wasn’t any good, but at least JJ Abrams had a vision. If Abrams directs episode 8, the series had a chance. Sadly, Rian Johnson hates Star Wars and its fans
Johnson does not hate Star Wars. He loves it; he just got carried away with his vision and made a few too many controversial choices. And for the record, Episode 7 *was* good. It had great action, solid performances, and a nice nostalgic feel. It was just a little *too* nostalgic, copying much too heavily from the original Star Wars.
Yes, it was a mistake for Johnson to make Luke so unlikeable for most of TLJ. Yes, the movie should’ve gone through a rewrite to eliminate some pointless story threads. But Johnson is not solely to blame for how the Sequel Trilogy turned out.
The main problem with the Star Wars sequel trilogy is that there were too many people at the helm with differing visions of what the plot was going to be. Plot mistakes like Retconning Rey’s family from just being nobodies to being essentially related to the Big Bad and bringing Palpatine back to life when there is essentially no foreshadowing for it are the signs that there were more than one script writers and editors that were writing contradictory plot lines.
The one thing that aggravates me the most is when she claps her hands together in unison with her speech to show that she's pissed off. I leave in a heartbeat💯💯🙄
I’d add the Toy Story series on this list for constantly milking the franchise. While I didn’t mind Toy Story 4, even I have to admit a part of its existence was probably Disney wanting to make more money with the IP and this is still continuing with Toy Story 5 despite Pixar stating 4 would be the final film in the series.

Didn't the Nostalgia Critic actually like the third movie as well? -7:39 Can you not do that in the middle of the video? The Marvels was better than I expected. Didn't exactly have high expectations for it. -12:44 How is that a problem? The Hobbit did feel kind of unnecessary. Endgame was the last MCU movie I saw all the way through. Marvels was designed to be garbage. The Hobbit was 3 great movies of joy.
No, fans didn't feel let down over Newt and Hicks being killed, they felt let down by the resurrection of Ripley in the following film. Killing them off was the right call. Prometheus didn't have a compelling lead. It had an unsympathetic beady eyed idiot as a lead.

While it would have been impossible to recast Newt with Carrie Henn, in agree that simply killing off Hicks was cheap. That said, having multiple characters who have already dealt with the aliens would kill the lone hero that nobody believes vibe.
Actually, I didn't like The Force Awakens! I found it to be lazy, derivative, and unimaginative! At least the prequels TRIED to be different and original as compared to the original trilogy!
If I am not mistaken, The prequels were written and helmed by the same people who created the first trilogy. The Disney produced sequels were essentially helmed by fans who didn’t really have the same vision or grasp on the fictional world of Star Wars that the original creators did.
@@hobbs1701a That’s what I was saying: the original people (George Lucas and Lucasfilm) made both the original trilogy and the prequels. Disney and JJ. Abrams/Rian Johnson made the Force Awakens and the rest of the recent sequels. The problem with the Force Awakens is that Lucas handed off the Star Wars IP to Disney and JJ. Abrams.
People complain about killing off protagonists in Alien movies when that's literally the point. Alien is not a nice story with a happy ending, it's your worst nightmare. You're stuck with a monster in the middle of cold void of space, death is the best you'll get in an universe where life is to be put through heII because you need work from a murderous company. Survival doesn't mean anything because there's no reason to go through deadly situations just to get a paycheck and still be under that same company. This nihilist view is what makes lovecraftian horror so overwhelming, the realistic nature of dying from anything just puts the alien as a symbol of all of that.
Why are people pretending the FoX-men films were good? They had good moments, decent ideas, and two good castings but overall? Not for me. Or the comics they were based off.
There's a reason they called it The Dark Phoenix *SAGA*. It's never, EVER, going to work as a one shot film. If they try it again, then it needs to be its own spinoff trilogy. At least. Also, in Alien³'s defence, Weaver wanted out. She asked for Ripley to be written out. Which is why so many of us were shocked when Resurrection happened and she was onboard.
Dark Phoenix wasn't supposed to be one film. It was supposed to be a whole trilogy directed by Bryan Singer. That's the whole reason why the X-Men cast renewed their contracts which doesn't expire until 2027 (meaning Marvel is not allowed to recast the characters until then). But then Fox was put up for sale, so the studio lost faith, Singer left and allowed Simon Kinberg to do whatever he wanted before the rights were transferred to Marvel.
Dark Horse comics did an excellent sequel to Aliens called Aliens: Earth War. It follows Hicks, Newt, and Ripley nearly twenty years after the events of Aliens. It was an amazing story. When Fox made Alien 3, Dark Horse had to reprint the comic and change the names of Hicks and Newt. There were several other great comics from Dark Horse that would have made excellent movies to continue the franchise but Fox was too stupid by not using them. They also ruined the chances of there being a great AvP franchise with the way they did those two movies.
Technically, the Hobbit trilogy was pushed by the people with the money. Having had so much success with LotR, they presumed the Hobbit could do the same. Unfortunately, apparently no one with the ability to OK payroll, etc. had ever read the book and were apparently presuming that there was enough material to do a trilogy ... Yeah. Still, beautifully shot.
I much prefer the Hobbit trilogy over Lord of the Rings. I can't understand why everyone hypes Lord of the Rings so much, it's incredibly overrated imo. Not gonna deny that Viggo Mortensen's character was the best part of that franchise though.
The "Franchise" philosophy of film making is what is killing off good film making. The original Alien and Star Wars were not made as the first installments of a half a dozen movies to be made over the course of fifteen years. They were cutting edge, great one off movies made by directors who never thought they were going to be making any more than that one film. The movies were huge hits first, and then came the sequels because peopled desired more. Now everything is planned too far in advance by the studios. You've got to have one good movie before you can have three...
I'm pretty sure they're talking about the endless Senate hearings, council meetings, and trade negotiations that took up a good chunk of the prequels' run time, not the "blargh they're pushing an agenda!" nonsense that people are generally blathering about when they bring up "politics in movies" these days
Would we be talking about Marvel fatigue if the projects they put out were any good? Eternals, Moon Knight, SheHulk, Secret Invasion all had good ideas behind them the execution was just poor
That is the whole point, too much content means quantity over quality. And that's on top of covids and strikes derailing most of their plans. Apparently it wasn't even Fiege's idea to have so many, but rather Disney wanted it. As the triangle of production goes, time-cost-quality, choose 2.
Of course there was a backlog of MCU stuff because of Covid. If the movies were released as originally intended, things probably would have more time to breath and have longer legs. I do think there has been too much Disney + stuff though. I generally liked the shows, but there's not enough special about them because there's always another one like a month later. I want more specials like Guardians and Werewolf By Night though!
Disney/Marvel, absoluteley. I'd been enjoying the films - have the entire first block of phases up to endgame on Blu-Ray - and then suddenly a load of content shifted over to TV on subscription only, which you HAD to see to understand a lot of what is going on in the films. The occasional spinoff with semi-related but not vital material is fine (I'm looking at you the awesome Agents of Shield) but now just too much too far. Pretty much the same with Star Wars too.
Dead reckoning f'd up. Tom Cruise couldn't keep his movie in IMAX theatres for more than a week, because when Avatar 2 came out, it took priority since it was filmed with IMAX proprietary cameras. He was livid. Also, that big ticket stunt of jumping a bike off a cliff was kinda pedestrian compared to what we're used to from him. Personally, I prefer his chaotic precision driving.
The Force Awakens was hot garbage from the start. Rey being able to do a difficult Jedi power without even knowing about it. Why would she try a Jedi Mind Trick without even knowing it was a thing??? Making Han Solo a deadbeat dad. Repackaging A New Hope with a bigger, scarier Death Star. Making Rey a mary sue. I could go on and on. That trilogy was doomed after the first movie.
Phew, so much to unpack RE Alien. The problem with the Alien series is not that it kills off beloved characters, though that doesn't help matters much. Alien3 had far better versions of the movie proposed, and it was the drawn out and mishandled nature of the path that led to the version we got that was the core problem. Then with Alien Resurrection, the story was fumbled and it was very much a product of its time. Fast forward to Prometheus, and the fan backlash that it wasn't enough of an Alien movie led to Covenant being made as very much an Alien movie rather than the exploration of the Engineers that it was originally intended to be. Cue more fan backlash that it wasn't Prometheus enough. Shaw's death was the result of the intended story thread being severed. Hicks and Newt died because there had to be no way of corroborating Ripley's story. And Ripley had to be shoehorned back into Resurrection because they wanted her star power and the legacy behind her appearances in the franchise, thus making her death pointless in 3. The writers just didn't have much of a coherent story to tell after Aliens, and have been fumbling their collective way through the sequels and spinoffs ever since.
Hmmm... Just because people didn't go see them doesn't mean that the movies were bad. Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - My wife grabbed my arm and didn't let go until the movie was done. It was a good movie. Indiana Jones - The Dial of Destiny - I liked it a lot. Perhaps having the woman compete with Indiana Jones to be the show's lead was the bad idea. Hmmm.2 - The MCU would be still be making amazing amounts of money if they hadn't gone woke. They have access to 80 years of great stories to make movies from. Just keep the quality high and stop selling us your religion and you'll get immediately back to making the big bucks again. As a personal favor, please make a movie about Fantastic Four issue #2.
Lol, not EVERYBODY came out of TFA smiling. What wasn't a direct copy/paste of the original, was either canon breaking or completely nonsensical. Most SW fans saw the cracks straight away!
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull being a solid enough entry into the Raiders franchise . . . ?! HUH? No, it REALLY wasn't. I'm afraid you & WhatCulture have just lost ANY credibility that you might have had. Indy 4 might just as well have come from the bottom of JarJar Abrams (or one of his former team of scribblers). Based on the dismal reviews, I haven't bothered with the latest Indy - I'm guessing it'll be on telly sometime.
Star Wars ep7-9 were bad not because of the story, but because of the "modern message" of female empowerment and the destruction of legacy characters. MiB latest movie suffers greatly because of the same thing. Mission impossible wasn't that bad, just kind of predictable and boring. Indiana Jones was awful because of the insufferable new female lead that made it unbearable to watch and belittling Indy's character altogether (de-aged Indy was actually the only part of the movie that felt like Indiana Jones movies). Marvel became awful after introduction of M-she-U. Lord of the rings had completed the story and nowadays even Hobbit bloated trilogy is miles ahead of Amazon's "Rings of Power". Call it for what it is and stop making excuses.
in defense of the use of de-aging and other cgi in the latest Indy adventure Harrison is approaching his 80's ... and even action stars can only do so much as they approach that age
The problem with Mission Impossible is it's never been very good. They have been a series of entertaining set pieces strung around fairly lame plotlines and a leading man who has sort of aged out of being believable in the role. At a certain point you get a bit sick of a franchise built around set pieces and want a more coherent plot that carries some weight but a bit like the Fast Franchise they have come to rely of the set pieces so much that everything in a film is done to get to the next one rather than the set pieces being the result of a natural organic plot.
Man... Whatcultue just won't let Alien 3 alone! U gotta remember that there was a big gap of time between 2 and 3 and franchises weren't like how they are today with its continuity. Back in the day we just went along with the story, today all u guys do is question the story
MCU, Indiana Jones and Starwars would be smash hits if they stop prioritate woke crap..and just give the viewers what they want good characters with good backstories.. And don't kill off favorites and then trying to replace them with a more diverse character...

What we need is new characters, new themes, and new stories. We don't need rehashes. After The Last Jedi took some risks and failed, Disney seems to have learned the wrong lesson. The best Star Wars content since the original trilogy is Andor. And that show took a ton of risks. Do more of that.
I don't need Star Wars to have a plan. I need it to have some balls.
*And Rogue One being one of the best Star Wars themed content we've seen. If they ever plan on making more movies I'd love to see an old republic, or the beginning of the Jedi/ Sith. If we got to see force users in their absolute prime.
So the worst part of Spiderman 3 was the whole bad Peter is somehow jazzy/hipthrusty/trying to be a Travolta Saturday night fever-esque weirdo. I mean how does Venom make you that frickin weird?
Phoebe Waller Bridge was the problem witt Dial of Destiny. That and making Indy a loser
0:58 I for one did NOT walk out of The Force Awakes with a smile on my face. All that I could think of is that "they just remade Episode IV: A New Hope."
Not a movie but killing Jimmy in boardwalk empire really set the show on a downward spiral. That and cancelling and time jumping the last season
I think The Marvels suffered from the strike more than anything. They weren't allowed to advertise for it, there was little hype because no one saw anything about it. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the movie, and the only people I have seen moaning about it were people who don't like all-female lead cast movies anyway. Not saying everyone who didn't enjoy the movie is like that, just saying the ones I personally have seen have been of that opinion.
Way to have a roundabout way of calling people who don't like it misogynists. Real argument that.
@@MontChevalier Is reading comprehension hard? I said not everyone is like that but the people I encountered didn't like it cause of the female cast. Because they WERE misogynists.
@@LadyKattrina84 I have doubts. You're just a misandrist.
Too much product is not the problem with the M-SHE-U.
It’s a problem, but it’s not the main problem
Pushing out too much crap product was the problem. Plus neutering male characters to boost female characters didn't help.
If Sony greenlits TASM3 or SPIDER-MAN 4
They'll have to get rid of AVI ARAD
Or it will be just another failure
Maybe for the better to keep those projects cancelled.
And Amy Pascal. People keep forgetting she's the other main problem with Sony. It's because of her we got horrible movies like 'Ghostbusters' (2016) and 'Men In Black: International' (2019), and it's because of her that Sony keeps trying to put themselves into Disney movies.

I hate alien 3 so much, hicks and newt are alive and alien 3 is not canon to me
"Deeply Likeable Tessa Thompson" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Favorite seen from the Star Wars sequels, easy: "Chewy we're home".
Yeah. Too much content is the problem with the mcu. Sure.
100%. It's all Ruin Johnson's fault for the ultimate failure of the sequel trilogy (in og fan eyes).
@@davisphillips993 I'd hate to see what he'd do to a project he hated! 🙄
Making the hobbit a trilogy wasn't Jackson's idea
I love the Hobbit
Better than Lord of the Rings imo.
The one thing that aggravates me the most is when she claps her hands together in unison with her speech to show that she's pissed off. I leave in a heartbeat💯💯🙄

Revisionist. Force Awakens was not universally embraced.
I didn't like it. Or rather, I hated the way it ended and The Last Jedi ruined whatever goodwill I had for it retroactively.
Deaged indie was the best part of d.o.d...
He'd be canceled if he said a woman was the worse part of the movie. Especially if he said an insufferable, unattractive, selfish woman. Smh
The Hobbit should have been adapted into only one movie, two at most. The stretched out trilogy was a soulless cashgrab.
Star Wars jumped the shark after the first trilogy. I don't even consider the following films the same franchise as the first 3.
Toy story 4 was a great movie, but it still didn’t need to exist
you think the de-aged indy was the problem with Dial of Destiny?
If you ask people they will tell you the opening of the movie was the only enjoyable part
I don't think it was a case of too much content for Marvel. It was a case of poor storytelling, prioritizing agendas over story.
-Is there really no Dead Reckoning part 2?
-De-aging Jones was a mistake? That was the best part of the movie.
-I did like the inclusion of Venom and Spiderman having a dark side. Didn't the Nostalgia Critic actually like the third movie as well?
-7:39 Can you not do that in the middle of the video? I almost thought it was over.
-Dark Phoenix didn't need to happen.
-The thing that sucks about the Fast series is that they ended the last one on a cliffhanger. Did they plan on making another entry?
-I actually watched most of the Marvel movies in theaters. Moon Knight was pretty good. Was I the only one who liked She-Hulk? The Marvels was better than I expected. Didn't exactly have high expectations for it.
-12:44 How is that a problem? The Hobbit did feel kind of unnecessary. There are three parts so we can make more money!
Dead reckoning part 2 will just have a new title. It’s still the same movie
Agree to everything you just said lol. Spitting facts here.
Too much poor content is the problem with the mcu
Yup! I don’t think I have ever agreed with all of the choices in one of these videos before. (and I liked some of Marvel’s excesses very much! But too much work to keep up with it!)
EP8 needs to be deleted from all History!
Lord of the rings was three books so three movies . The hobbit was ONE book so it should have got ONE movie
I can't help but laugh when people say that star wars became political. Like, did you watch the originals? At all?
Dead Reckoning was awful not strong at all. And Tessa Thompson isn't remotely likeable.
I miss peak what culture and the quiz style shows.
Why you miss their peak?
The Last Jedi wasn't terrible
Men in Black Int. was so bad I stopped watching 1/2 way thru.
3:09 purple alien looks a bit like Jamie Lee Curtis
Mission Impossible 8? Didn't see yet, it's not adding anything new, just reheating old food.
Dial of Disaster proves Harrison Ford will do anything for money. Sean Connery did the same in the later years like in Dragon Heart.
Worst Spiderman ever!
X-Men: Woke Phoenix crippled the franchise with bad acting and worse writing. Girl power ensured I'd never see another one in the franchise.
Alien Covenant killed yet another perfect female lead. She was absolutely great and they threw it all away.
Gareth..love ya mate..but you gotta work on not flicking off the end of your sentences with "aaa" or "uuhh" its really repetitive and gritting like a california girl using a droning vocal fry all the time :'D

And you called PROMETHEUS fascinating???? Am I high, now?
blaming the failure of the dial of destiny on visual effects is the dumbest thing i have ever heard it couldnt be that it was a woke nightmare that completely emasculated indiana jones
woke culture destroys franchises? no surprises here
Last Jedi may have had its issues but, "Rey Nobody" wasn't one of them.
While it would have been impossible to recast Newt with Carrie Henn, in agree that simply killing off Hicks was cheap.
That said, having multiple characters who have already dealt with the aliens would kill the lone hero that nobody believes vibe.
No one likes Tessa Thompson
Actually, I didn't like The Force Awakens! I found it to be lazy, derivative, and unimaginative! At least the prequels TRIED to be different and original as compared to the original trilogy!
If I am not mistaken, The prequels were written and helmed by the same people who created the first trilogy. The Disney produced sequels were essentially helmed by fans who didn’t really have the same vision or grasp on the fictional world of Star Wars that the original creators did.
@@melissawickersham9912 You'd be incorrect! George did the prequels himself! Unlike the original trilogy!
I will defend to my last day that I really like Alien 3
“Deeply likeable Tessa Thompson” 🤣🤣🤣
@@vetarlittorf1807 Singer didn't choose to leave. He was fired due to multiple Sexual Assault allegations
@@rorylynch7775 Nope. Those were solved in 2014. He chose to leave.
Do you know where to buy it?
So Alien's good continuation story got cancelled for the sake of a bullshit sequel long before the same happened to Star Wars.
Yeah, Peter did not want to do three movies. That was all the studios fault.
The builduo of Ben being the final villain of the Sequel trilogy was so exciting and im so disappointed we never got his proper conclusion.
Star Wars has always had politics, so it’s kind of disingenuous to say people didn’t like it “getting political” in the prequels.
Everything has politics, there's a difference between politics and an agenda
There's a difference between "getting political" and "getting boring/bad".
I'm pretty sure they're talking about the endless Senate hearings, council meetings, and trade negotiations that took up a good chunk of the prequels' run time, not the "blargh they're pushing an agenda!" nonsense that people are generally blathering about when they bring up "politics in movies" these days
always such a solid presentation from you Gareth!
Moon knight is way better than, and doesn’t belong in the same tier as the rest of those examples, but I agree with your overall point
Avi screwed up the 90s cartoon and Spidey 3. I bet he’s going to ruin the new trilogy too. “We need to make action figures!”
lol it wasn't all Jackons fault to make the HObbit into 3 movies, y'all need to do some more research before doing these

Men In Black:International was a major disappointment.
Also trying to create in a three years what Marvel had created in 10 + years: the Snyderverse.
