the KICK now has hyper armor so you can reaction trade with a Shield poke, even from a greatspear and guardbreak the shieldpoker, so it's a realy viable hard counter to blocking now.
From really wants you to not use sword and board this game. Spam magic from across the map? Perfectly fine. Try to role play as a simple knight? Get stuffed casual.

There was also storm stomp, beastial sling, parry, shield bash, giant's hunt, stamp upward cut, flame strike, greatsword and colossal weapon HA, heavy jump attacks, fireballs, greatbow, etc, or you could just swap to shield and mirror them. People that hid behind shields were annoying but never difficult. I like that kick got buffed just wish it didn't push through shield poke as what's the point to even use it now?

can’t say i’m happy with this update. i enjoyed ds3 pvp mainly because everyone was on the same playing field in regards to hitstun. armor was mostly cosmetic or for additional absorption. any version of the game where the meta is completely changed based on how much armor someone wears is bad imo. using full-goat degrades the foundational aspects of agression vs defensive, priority, prediction based setups, etc.
While I do agree, I also think poise is a great thing to have considering PvE. So, maybe a good thing would be to ignore poise for PvP. And just have everyone have the same poise against one an other, with each weapons having specific poise damage? It feels like it would be a lot less of a nightmare to balance for the dev team. After all, most, if not all of the PvE do either 50 or 100 poise damage for a reason.
Ds3 PvP was terrible lol. Easily the worst in the franchise. I’d take the lag stabbing Xbox 360 days of ds1 over that steaming pile of shite that is ds3

Imo there are significant changes to offmeta weapons. Axes get way more hyperarmor now if 2-handed. Warped axe is a beast on a strength setup. Hammers like stone club were already solid, now they're even better. Flails scaling and hyperarmor increases are significant. Chainlink gets and S from strenght when infused with heavy, while also getting good range for its type and innate bleed, making it a perfect pick for str/arc builds along with the mace. Nightriders got an A from dex on sharp, and a B on poison which works amazing with a dex/arc build, doing 2 status effects with pretty solid damage. Also they're unparryable so against light armor users, your can just mash on without a care, you'll most likely poise through straight sword, spear and katana attacks with ease. Downright felt unreal how effective they got since launch. Not gamebreaking, but we might got to respect the flails from now on, they're slowly but surely getting there.

I like my off meta stuff so this update has kinda just monkey's pawed me personally. All the stuff that us universally good, is now in the game. All the stuff I did like but felt needed only sight adjustments or just needed to be left alone, is pretty bad now. Invasions are going to be super hard with thunderstorm hawk and radhan ash now gone from the list of "get off me" options

How about a Talisman or limited time item that allows invaders to be allies if they so choose. Guess I can only hope the DLC has something like that, but I'm absolutely not gonna hold my breath

The problem with passive Poise is it has always been specifically for heavy slow weapons, but light fast weapons use it SO much better. They should just make it so you can only have high poise if you have heavy weapons and no fast weapons equipped. That way you couldn’t just put an UG on your back and two-hand spears.
My impression is heavy armor poise being so powerful, it feels like they become a requirement, thus forcing a lot of the build around it. High END for weight and tali slot. Seems frustrating and limiting. Or maybe that's the price you pay for heavy armor?
I hope we're not back to mandatory heavy armor. I would like to think that since hyper armor is still reliable and most of the tankable setups do less damage, it's mostly a situation where you trade off a lot of damage potential for trying to tank stuff. I do believe that even before the patch, a lot of people wrote off weapons just because they were required to use their heavy attacks and jump attacks to break passive poise, when in reality many of those poise breaking attacks were perfectly useful, and light attacks could be used for chipping down people who aren't aggressing. clubs seem fucked, which is a shame because hammers in general really needed the buff but they absolutely did not. I hope that moveset gets toned down. (it already looked like an animation speed up glitch before imo)
I dont think the poise reductions to the smaller weapons will be too bad at least in dueling. Other than just swapping from, say, shamshir to a 133 poise breaking option, you can damage their poise with even a phantom hit, then swap to fist rr1 or twinblade rr2 and stun on the first hit. Itll also add at least some inscentive to r2 more, for what thats worth. I cant wait to be done moving and test all this shit out!
I experimented with nightriders flail and chainlink a bit yesterday. Gotta say, while a good player with pokes is still probably gonna edge out the victory, it is a solid counter to both shamshir and cleanrot now. You will be fast enough to break the spam, and you will win the poise contest if your opponent tries to keep on. Being unparryable also means you don't have to worry about skilled players pulling out a surprise parry at all if you become a bit spammy. I feel like small weapons didn't really got worse, it rather feels like the rest got more useable and there are more relevant options for counter.
lots of doom and gloom about fullgoat poise coming back, but killing off cancer like hyper armour ashes, braindead trading, powerstance spears etc for the trade of having to fight occasional fullgoats again is fine by me i would still have preferred pre-1.12 poise to remain
If there is one saving grace, now that the DLC is out maybe they will actually pay attention and balance the game with monthly patches. Or the suits will just say they need to immediately move on to the next game...
For handaxes, you can still pick the SS because they have far more AoW options than the axes, and aside from a few axes (or rather, one) they all do standard damage only, whereas SS also have thrust.
Milady may have stun issues. Couldn't get it to stagger a heavy gold knight, but Eleanor's poleblade still staggers easily. Have not tested lizard 🦎 greatsword properly.
Imo a majority of what the patch did was welcome and overdue. From fixing hyperarmor issues, status issues (not live but will likely be hotfixed), nerfing thrusting sword and buffing stuff like flails. The mixed change is definitely in regard to one hand or powerstanced small weapons not stunning heavy armor on light attacks. SS, CS, fist, claw, whip, katana and spears lose half their moveset by stacking poise.
I had 105 poise and still couldn't roll out of spinning slash. I'm guessing the poise damage is about the same or maybe even the same. It just does less damage and status effect build up now.
Due to the speed changes, it also greatly effects non-casual PvE(sorry bubble horn) but the hammer and axe speed ups will be Bonkers! While making easy casual cheese builds a bit worse.
The only thing I care about honestly. Fists have been neglected since DS2, and were finally viable in Elden Ring. Thank God they didn't get nerfed into the ground.

Swords are not just worst than axes for the simple reason that they get access to different ashes of war, so while as an off-hand weapon we will find more axes, i think that off-meta stuff like sword and board will still be playable since everything else that was "meta" now is on pair and balanced. In my opinion this is the first time of elden ring history where potentially every build is valuable and worth-it, and i love it... Obviously it's only a matter of few hours before everything change, because the DLC is coming out and there will be definetely broken things in there that will shape the meta ones again. For now tho i reserve the right to be hopeful and i'm really, really happy of the changes they made in this patch. Well done Fromsoftware.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't. CGS is a heavy weapon class, heavier than reapers and greatsword which from what I understand are still capable of breaking poise easily.
This patch has taken 5 steps forward and 10 steps back in terms of PVP balancing imo, nothing should be unstunnable, and now heavies are again buffed and even further outclass smaller weapons :sigh:
For me this patch is a fucking disappointment i mean they did some cool stuff about ha, powerstance and ashes but stuff about poise is disgusting cause now full bullgoat meta is returning back this meta made me quit ER until patch 1.10 yeah we can use crackblade but it's workaround not a solution

Estoc, especially off-stoc variety, needed nerfing. Having every last hit in the combo deal the same poise damage was oppressive, and unintended, considering literally every other combo on other weapon classes dealt diminishing poise damage over each successive hit.

For me this patch is a fucking disappointment i mean they did some cool stuff about ha, powerstance and ashes but stuff about poise is disgusting cause now full bullgoat meta is returning back this meta made me quit ER until patch 1.10 yeah we can use crackblade but it's workaround not a solution

what it sounded like with regards to poise it's only going to be pre-1.10 bullgoat mode for lighter weapons and even them most running r2's/all neutral r2's break poise. I'd have to test in-game but even if havelmonster-adjacent setups pop up I don't think it'll be as oppressive as it was back then

Estoc, especially off-stoc variety, needed nerfing. Having every last hit in the combo deal the same poise damage was oppressive, and unintended, considering literally every other combo on other weapon classes dealt diminishing poise damage over each successive hit.

Quickstep + estoc is essentially murky in Elden ring. It’s still powerful but not as oppressive
To be clear, I am talking about estoc in two hands as setup for 1v1ns with rules, bans and ect.
