I started to build this kit. I got 4 or 5 issues. Unfortunately due to Covid and lock downs I couldn't get the rest as I was going to have it from WH.Smiths. Last year I thought I would carry on with this kit. But it was going to cost me a few hundred pounds to get all the issues that I missed. So I decided to leave it. But at the same time I was building the model kit Bismarck and having that from WH.Smiths
Hi John I really felt your emotions while watching this beautiful model spitfire it really is amazing you have done so well. Its a sad thing when we spend so many years building these models and finally comes to a end i must admit I did have a lump in my throat. I'm so very happy for you that you have had some modelling work put your way you are a true trooper and I wish you all the luck in the world. Love your channel and how you build anyway my friend you take good care of yourself until next time stay safe 👍
Thank you for your support rod, when I was adding the final parts and watching the test flight. I couldn’t help but to think about the last couple of years building the spitfire ,and all we have been though with the COVID pandemic, which made me feel very emotional, now that the build was coming to the end
1st class John, thanks for raising the issues of the build as well. I must admit, on my victory build I spent longer getting missing parts or parts not fit for purpose that I know longer do magazine builds and have gone back to full kit buys.
Hi my friend, yes in the future I will only be building full kits
Great build and video John and very informative, you,ve done a cracking job on that, im still waiting for my issues 99-102, thought i would have got them long before now
Thank you Dave, I’ve really enjoyed the build, but I’m also glad it’s finished
i can imagine you are mate, i,ll be glad when ive done mine thats providing i get my issues
Lovely work, very nice, congratulations! Your skills maybe can teach me a lot for scratch building. I just have finished a Briten Norman Islander 1 24 scratch model with two engines working and all ligths working too, its made in cardboard. I need to learn a lot, and your video makes me feel the need for still working and learning. Thank you very much for share your nice experience working in the Spitfiree. Cheers !
Thank you my friend
Many thanks for a very patient and detailed explanation. I have one question surrounding the mains adaptor as the RUclips video and description from the link you provided is 12 months old. Does the mains adaptor cover both of the battery compartments (8 x C batteries) as you described ? Kind regards John.
Hi farsley, that’s a good point, think I would need to email them first before purchasing
Hi Farsley, yes. Although 8 C type batteries, joining the two boxes is for a boost, it still remains a total of 6v output to the main PCB. Our power mod will replace both these.
Thank you Ian
Really enjoyed this episode John. Great to see this Spitfire standing proud on its base.
Thank you Phil, ive really enjoyed building the spitfire, and with a couple of finished touches the spitfire will sit proudly on display
The base looks so much better John , like most people engine sound not good. Will look great when Merlin in it, was enjoying the video then the replacement wire broke OMG.
Hi Steve, yes I’ve got one more video coming out next week, adding the power mod, fixing the cable and adding the engine
Like I said to Wayne, it's a fantastic model. Love it in flight mode. Just too bad that there are the issues with durability. I'd like to see how you tackled the repairs and modifications that you are planning. Sorry I've been away so long. It's good to be back.
Hi John - looks great and the base work is great. Just a few issues with the model itself that perhaps you can fix which are not accurate for the plane. 1. The undercarriage is too vertical (ie upright) they struts should splay slightly outwards and there needs to be a slight forward rake as well. 2. I notice there are no wheel strut covers - perhaps you have yet to put them on. 3. The propellor blade pitch is in the full feathered position, and it looks weird to be honest. Is this adjustable? In this position there is no bite, they use this position only in glide condition should the engine fail. Other than that she looks great. Love your passion too
Looks amazing enjoy your weekend 👍👍🙏🙏💞💞🍺🍺🐕🐕
Thank you eddy, same to you
Hi John, how have you been. I've been dark for a while. Just want to say Wayne is sending us all over to watch your build. Good to see you again.
Cheers Steven, ye I’ve seen Wayne has taken down the spitfire playlist
That was brilliant John. Really enjoyed this. 👍
Thank you liz
Oh dear !
I’m still waiting on my parts, but thanks for both videos as wasn’t as big a job as I thought. So cheers for that, really appreciate that first video
Mines now apart waiting on new parts. Can I ask did you use those spacers on the wing rods to lift it a bit as a bit worried the wheels won’t sit properly
Ye my friend the spacers just left the body enough for the wheels to clear the base when coming down for landing
Looking good John it's taken some time just one question in the fix issue did they supply the tie rod for the tail wheel to the motor ?
Hi Edward, no nothing supplied for the tail wheel
Great advice as usual John it’s a pity they didn’t test their upgrade a bit more thoroughly
Hi Ian, I’m not sure if the design company work closely with model builders. But I could have recommended 3 or 4 basic improvements that would have made this build look 100 times better finished
Well done john, not even started mine yet lol ? Looks like il be buying those under carriage cables off you too !
Thank you Richard I will be giving them away free to my patrons and channel members
Thanks for the video was very impressed with what you have done with the base to which I have now done the same and am very happy with the result
It’s a lot more manageable John
@@Johnbuildsiconic I think its a brilliant idea mate top marks for that one
i haven't started mine yet John and am sweating a bit as both you and the other John have had issues. Still I am learing what to look out for. Would a guitar string work as a cable substitute on the undercarriage if required?
Hi Phil Ye it been a poorly designed build , guitar string or fishing wire would work
Thanks for sharing John.
Your welcome John, I’m so glad it’s finished
Hi John I was going to send my spitfire back but hachette have sent me every magazine to re do the parts I broke just a quick question what did you use to keep the wings together where there is a bit of a gap at the tips thanks
Hi Edward, hot glue then clamp the tips very quickly will do the trick, great hold but the
Two wing parts can Still be opened again if needed
Hi john im copying your idea for the stand how did you marry up the corner brackets as im haveing a terrible time as the holes don,t marry up to the frame would it be best to superglue the corners.
Hi my friend, two of the corners don’t line up with the brackets, I just glued them corners with a strong glue
Looking fantastic mate 👍👍👍
Thank you robin
hi john done the mods but tested spit on base with battery supply at mo awaiting partwork upgrade every thing is correct but nothing works all it does is batterys get hot
Only at issue 78 here in Australia.
Apparently it still takes a ship almost six months to get here.
Crazy thing is that it's made in China.
Which is closer to Australia than the UK
Hi Tubman’s, Your still very close to finishing, plus you get to see all the problems with the built well in advance
@@Johnbuildsiconic . I haven't even started building it yet and it's way down the list of future projects
Well done John thought yhe plane was very noisy and the wing nearest you I'm not sure if some of the guns where not working
Cheers Edward, The port wing I never added the blackout covers to the optic cable, that’s why they don’t look has bright
hi great video can u help with the tail wheel is there a wire
Hi bill, no wires run to the tail wheel in the end now
Hi, my wife's grandad has built this spitfire but his wheels go up when press start up , and come down when in flight , if checked all wires are in the correct place on panel,
Any ideas?
Only thing I can say really is make sure he’s using top quality batteries, when I was making test flights with cheaper batteries, the wheels would come down mid flight
Nothing to do with batteries, mine does the same with the power pack@@Johnbuildsiconic
Hey John my parts not arrived yet, I’m interested in a cable replacement if thats how they are breaking.
Hi Horlixs you could be lucky and it never break, or like me
Break after a couple of hours but I will be making loads of extra cables if people need them
Hello john, Where can I buy only electronic base and remote ?
Hi, I Think it could only be brought as part of the 100 issues build the spitfire subscription
HI john have a problem with undercarrige motor got power supply to it reading 1.5v thru cables but motor is now duff due to the problems all ISSUES 35 TO 38 out of stock do you know anyone that has the motor from ISSUE 35 or where i can find replacement
many thks pete
Hi Peter, it’s would be best to join one of the build the spitfire groups and ask there mate
HY JOHN PLEASE TELL ME HOW TAIIL WHEEL WORKS ?????
Hi Peter the tail wheel doesn’t move its static
Hi.
Just wanted to tell you how I cured the undercarriage problem,
It is a lot easier than I thought it would be, what you do is put a small variable resister in the cable that powers the motor for the undercarriage, what this does is reduces the voltage to the motor, which slows it down , with a little adjustment of the resistor you can slow it down enough to make sure that the power to he motor has switched of with the undercarriage just slightly down ,but more importantly the cable is not pulled tight.
It dose mean the wheels are not quite all the way up, but if it means the cable doesn't get strained and snap then it's worth it.
My undercarriage is properly down by 1/16:of an inch when raised, which is hardly noticeable.
Hope this helps
Phill
Hi, Do you have a video etc on how you modified your stand for the spirefire mk1a?
Hi Gary, no I didn’t film the process of modified the base. I would have only been relevant to a very small audience, Sorry
@@Johnbuildsiconic The reason in asking i tried looking at your base and i can not get the corners on one end to match up with the metal angle bits
@@garyinwood2829 hi two of the corner dont match up with the metal support, i just glued them corners
@@Johnbuildsiconic John thank you for that I will do that tomorrow 😊
I used a two parts epoxy glue for extra strength
Möchte dieses Modell gerne erwerben, aber wo !
Hi John. How do I obtain a replacement cable from younplease
Hi Brian, I will be making and testing the replacement cable tomorrow, then I will be making a video letting people know how to get them
@@Johnbuildsiconic thank you
I JOHN ANY IDEAS WHY MY UNDER GEAR GOES DOWN WHEN IT SHOULD BE UP?
Hi pip Did you fit the extra cable to the gearbox
@@Johnbuildsiconic YES
THE UNDER GEAR GOES UP AND DOWN OK BUT ITS OUT OF TIMING
Ok, All I can say then is just go and check all the cable fitted in the main boards in the plane and the base
Yes I have the same problem, not battery related, I have the power pack .@@Johnbuildsiconic
This is the first time I have built a model through subscription, and it was a shocking experience. I would not recommend any build from Hachette. I have met other model enthusiasts at my local newsagent and without exception, they are all of the same opinion. Shame on you Hachette.
How much would the replacement cables be please
Hi jack, I will be giving them away free, maybe just ask people to support the channel with a month or so of channel membership
Hi john you know i've decided to send my spitfire back due to the quality of parts and parts breaking and not matching up well i phoned them today talk about being fobbed off they give you an email but when i asked for e telephone number was told there is none anyway found a number phoned and got fobbed off again so i'm just going to send it back with a letter of complaint plus a I will be seeing my solicitor for advice will be doing no more kits from them
Hi Edward, I hope you have better luck when your solicitor get involved
@@Johnbuildsiconic I don't hold out heard of others getting nowhere
It’s not good Edward. We have been really let down, I’ve spent most of the day reworking parts to try and get a good fitting finished model
I've decided to do the King George V my son is going to buy me a model paint sprayer so that's a good start
Get yourself a spray booth even the acrylic thinner are not good to be inhaled
Do yourselves a favour pop down to ya local fishing tackle shop & get some pike fishing trace wire & crimps it comes in various breaking strains so should be able to get a suitable stronger replacement or carp fishing shock leader braid .... supple & strong 🤣
Thank you Garry, I will look into that cheers
Sort of looks great but is let down by too many things. I had the first dozen or so packs via subscription. My first partworks build but was so cheesed off with issue 1 when my prop gears bushed and the replacements ditto in an issue I bought from a newsagent I decided the quality did not equate to the price and cancelled. Likewise the Titanic. Given the overall price of these models after two years or so I would have expected far more quality and robustness!
Yes I think we all expected a lot more from the build, I won’t be subscribing to any
Future part work builds
I once tried to build a Spitfire, but instead I built a Shitfire. :(
That engine sounds like a sink of water emptying ???!!!!
Hi eddy love it your right it does
John the video keeps buffering
Hi Annie, it’s probably still being rendered from RUclips
Mine doesn’t work at all. Only the lights, morse, start works on handset
Pressing lights all lights but the port red work
Switching in base, lights come on. Right aileron is permanent in up position
Pressing start the propellor runs and makes noise. Pressing take off makes the tail rise, then entire plane lifts into air and then it dies.
Pretty rubbish really
I would recommend just checking all the plugs that go into the plane circuit board and base board again mate
@@Johnbuildsiconic All the cables are in place ok in both the circuit boards. I think it’s just rubbish to be honest. A test board at various points to test motors would have worked
I’m pretty certain it’s either the aileron or wheels motor
It seems to work to the point when wheels would go up or perhaps an aileron ?
I’m guessing the wheels or the aileron is commanded and it breaks at that point
None of the handset buttons work apart from lights, morse and start
So very little actually works
Looks like you we’ll be in the very long line that’s having to contact hechette for new replacement parts
Worse sounding engine I've ever heard...lol
I wouldn't take off if my engine sounded like that...
Sounds like it was still trying to warm up...lololol
And I've flown in some WWII fighters...lolol
Best across the pond...
I robin it lost a-bit of sound quality recorded though the mic, but it’s not the greatest soundboard
buy rechargeable batteries
C grade rechargeable battery cost a small fortune
@@Johnbuildsiconic buy the mains adapter kit from partwork upgrades only £33 and works a treat
