NOTE: While this video took me quite awhile to make (a few hours), I rushed through much of the 'archiso'. A few reasons why my final ISO didn't look quite right were: (1) I didn't add any systemd services to airootfs/etc/systemd which meant my display manager (sddm) didn't start automatically. (2) The scripts that I put in airootfs/etc/skel/.local/bin need to have their permissions set in the profiledef, just like we did for the shadow/gshadow files. I'll have these errors (and more) fixed by the time we add Calamares to the 'archiso', assuming people are interested in that video. Hope this helps you guys that want to go ISO building!
Awesome, good job DT, many don't know about this awesome tool! For the last decade or so, I always reinstall by rebuilding ISO instead of downloading one, which besides newer packages, then my script adds e.g auto wifi setup, testing repo, Dropbox support through rclone(retrieve any script I have), and few other tweaks etc. Plus own install/partition script, fully unattended. Thanks for vid!
Hey DT I highly suggest that you actually go on a journey and start building your own arch distro and configure it the way you want and then share it with the community. And also we are going to learn from you as you build the iso.
DT, thanks for everything you do, including this last archiso. Very informative, as would a calamares demo be. Another suggestion for exploration would be... setting up a triple head with Xorg (and maybe even wayland if that even is possible) with a virtual screen of 5760x1080, thus creating one large screen for gamin, for instance, simracing.
At 33:10 you just realised that you set yourself up for what is about to come :) Of course I would love to see how it´s done!!! And huge kudos for keeping in those happy little accidents everyone can learn from. Cheers to self installing dtos!
maybe you can make a whole series of videos about calamares, you know over time and step by step DTOS will become it's own linux distro accidentally :)
This was an amazing watch. Helped me learn a lot about Arch and Linux in general. Thank you, DT! Would love to see a part 2! This got me interested in making my own little "Live USB" version of my current setup. Would definitely be a lot of fun!
Had some of the same errors when I was building an archiso for my work. IDK if this is the best way to do it, but I just built some services that run at first boot to do some swapping of files. This got me around the files already exist error.
Hi DT :) Love your video as always. Do you know how to change the default shell to zsh with archiso? I googled a lot, but still don't know how to do it. Thanks.
I may fiddle with archiso with calamares or jade, because i literally just need a partitioning tool because of my HDD having a windows dual boot i don't wanna nuke
this is 1 complicated process. if i could build my own arch iso, it would be simply arch, kde plasma (with some cool themes and customizations), firefox (pre-logged into my favourite sites if possible), libre office etc. i assume this would be live boot so any changes made would disappear on next boot. anyway, something like this with my pre-config could be a neat pocket swiss army knife whereever i go and need to get some work done on any machene. cool stuff. Thanks DT!
I am a bit late here, but I would love to see how to use Calamares, I have been wanting to make my own Install of Arch that's a bit quicker to install than vanilla Arch, but not as bloated as Manjaro. Nothing complicated, just a simple quick-setup for a development environment, but I understand accomplishing that may be complicated in itself.
Hey, DT primo video. How about showing us how to make our own package list instead of our copying your package list? That is worth a pt2 video on building your own distro. + Signed files pt3 security
Hey DT! Thanks for this tutorial Can you check out niri window manager? I just switched from dwl to it and I feel its great I am not sure if you are into wayland or not but the main thing i like about it is implementation of workspaces and scroll features
Does the last words mean that If I make a usb-drive bootable with the .iso file produced by archiso and put it in my laptop, I'll only be able to live-boot and won't be able to actually install the customized-arch-iso that I built on my laptop?
What if I want to make an ISO that's also an installer? I found a great set of scripts for turning my setup into a livecd which is nice but I want to install it. How do I build an installable iso? There seems to be very little info about this topic online.
i got all the way to packaging the iso with the mkiso command and welp, most of my packages werent found and i copied my exact pacman to the new one , it even showed the repos im used to but still had parsing errors, i think a lot of my packages are scripted installs or something how do i figure this out?
I hope you cover some day the calamares installer, I undesrtand better with your videos than a documentation web, and even more calamares-installer wiki is a little mess.
I loved watching this! THANK YOU! I'll look to see if you have made the Calamares video. I presume you did that work for your DTOS installer ISO. I'm going down rabbit holes here right now but having fun learning! Have a great day DT!
Hi DT! I know my comment here is a little bit off topic, but I am commenting it here in order to not forget it, and to make it more likely for it to be read by you. I know you like Tiling Window Managers a lot, and maybe you could appreciate this idea (or not). Well, let me tell it. I guess it would be interesting to have a command line utility to display all programs being run in a TWM and the tagname associated with it. It would be something like this: 1 - alacritty 2 - qutebrowser/alacritty 3 - audacity/pavucontrol and so on... It could also contain the date/time and all those indicators that people love to see on their statusbars/taskbars. This could be an interesting workaround for those TWMs which just have no taskbar or have a very limited one (and for those with a very old laptop, with smal lcd screen, where every inch of screen estate means a lot - so they have to disable the taskbar they already have) What is the main advantage of this: you just have to memorize which tagname your terminal is and from there, issue 'list-twm-tasks' (or something like that) and then you know precisely where to go to with Mod+Number
Yes I want to build my own Linux system, it is an up-to-date version, thank you! Ok, so I have a question at 2:14 if you don't have a cursor, how would you highlight that line? I never saw anybody explaining it. I know everything is faster only on keyboard, but how do you do highlight with keyboard? Because I know you can Tab all the way down there, but it takes so much time and even then I'm stuck there because after that much button smash I think shift plus arrows don't let you highlight it, so I want to know how do you highlight stuff like this in middle of a text without a mouse?
I'd heard of this utility in passing, but had never checked it out. I'm glad I found this video and decided to try archiso, because even just being able to remove the god-awful bootup pcspkr beep is a huge win.
I would really love to see how to build the calamaris and how to make proper intaller!! Also your videos are most informative and easy to follow! Thank you for that.
Hey man, I just discovered you recently, as well as Arch linux (I've been using Mint for years). I tried DTos script today, good, good work. You have to create a downloadable iso. I'm trying to cast the Xmonad spell.
This is 100th comment on the video. As usual, great video. And yes we all want you to go down the calamares rabbit hole and launch the DTOS ISO. The people have spoken.
I'm not familiar with the tools that people use to make Debian-based or Ubuntu-based ISOs, but I do remember there being a tool called 'cubic' that allowed people to create custom Ubuntu ISO. So that might be what you're after.
NOTE: While this video took me quite awhile to make (a few hours), I rushed through much of the 'archiso'. Maybe do a followup video someday perhaps?
Thank you for spending time making this video. I have been wondering how to do this for a long time.
Give us your dtos image
thanks for this tutorial. i would also appreciate one including calamares.
amazing had this idea today! and you came out with 3 days ago!
This channel is such a blessing. Thank you.
This was such perfect timing, I had just opened up yt. Cheers DT!
Hey DT . I would love see your video explaining how to add calamares to archiso ! You are great teacher .

I will probably never build my own system, but I find this video very informative. So video on calamares is something I would like to see.
Hey DT I highly suggest that you actually go on a journey and start building your own arch distro and configure it the way you want and then share it with the community. And also we are going to learn from you as you build the iso.
Already exists called dtos
@@shimmysham8725 DTOS right now is only a postinstallation script, not a proper iso like he showed here, and heck this wasn't even a proper iso
This is what I need, thanks DT.
Hello wonderful person reading this comment
hi!
Well hello there fellow wonderful person
Hello!

Oh, hi. Lol.
As a potential maintainer of yet another arch post install script this is very much needed.
However, it's a personal project

You're just pushing those Arch documentation maintainers' buttons now. :D (and I am kidding, your videos are excellent).
Thank you DT, i'am french and i easy follow your guide

Good timing, DT. I was looking for a video like this. Been looking into Artix and Arcolinux for a basic starter, then adding apps I want included.
Really cool subject matter.
Wonderful, can you show us how to make the same with Ubuntu based distros?

Are you planning to provide an ArchISO image with DTOS?
perfect timing was just looking into it yesterday thx !
22mn: the archiso was complaining about the file in the working directory not the profile one 😉😎

rm -f os-release and then you can copy yours.
Hi DT :)
Love your video as always.
Do you know how to change the default shell to zsh with archiso? I googled a lot, but still don't know how to do it. Thanks.
Yes, do a calamares on top of your dtos iso that you did in this video. Maybe I can make my own iso or fiddle around with it.
I may fiddle with archiso with calamares or jade, because i literally just need a partitioning tool because of my HDD having a windows dual boot i don't wanna nuke

Now the thing is how would you install this ISO whilst keeping all the config files. Calamares perhaps?
now if this was in a GUI, i'd have a good time updating an ISO monthly with all the updated packages i needed.
I am a bit late here, but I would love to see how to use Calamares, I have been wanting to make my own Install of Arch that's a bit quicker to install than vanilla Arch, but not as bloated as Manjaro. Hello DistroTube how did you create your packages of DTOS because I want to create Linux Distro with archiso
Finally a video about archiso.

Hey, DT primo video. How about showing us how to make our own package list instead of our copying your package list? That is worth a pt2 video on building your own distro. + Signed files pt3 security
Why don't you just put your extra programs in /usr/local, and maybe add a link using alternatives.
Hey DT! Thanks for this tutorial
Can you check out niri window manager?
I just switched from dwl to it and I feel its great

Why would youbdelete the output? That is unnecessary writes. You can delete the conflicting file inside if it conflicts.
Excellent video! very good pace, easy to follow, no time-wastage. Well done!

Is there a guide on what to do to make it better after installing arch linux?
is it possible you can do a video for beginners of creating a distro?
