I've already tried this at home, made the bowl of one out of Owyhee picture jasper, and used an acrylic stem I already had. Made the band around the stem out of a Swiss Franc that was a failed coin ring.
Thank you Jimmy. It's in fact not a special tool of any kind, simply my jacobs chuck (aka drill chuck) with the jaws all the way opened up. This has enough clearance to allow the tenon to pass into it, so I can exert some pressure on the ring as the glue dries. The same one you can see holding drills in the rest of the video (at 3:14 for example).
Depends on which ones you buy. Something like those "man crate" things are the cheapest possible briar with a cheap plastic stem. Other shops like RawKrafted and Vermont Freehand even sell predrilled kits made with Mimmo Romeo's briar (arguable the best cutter in the world) and semi-finished handmate ebonite stems.
Beautiful pipe. great work. I’m looking to get into this hobby. Can you tell me what that tool is that looks like a sanding wheel or grinding wheel? Is it a stand alone tool or is it on your lathe I can’t tell. I’d appreciate any help. Thanks for the video
The zig zag file used to cut the slot is a Kemper zig zag tool. Available from Vermontfreehand.com for example. The rustication tool was homemade from a piece of wood and a bunch of sharpened nails with the heads ground off :-)
nice work! what is the name of the tool you used for rustication? And when you lit the stummel, was that just to dry the alcohol from the dye faster, or does it add to the look?
The rustication tool is a homemade handle with a bunch of nails glued in. Firing the dye is just to speed it up, it actually gives a slightly better result if you don't but let it dry overnight...

@@roronoazoro-lh1jz I'm talking about tobacco pipes, I have no experience with bongs, that's not what these pipes are for. But I would imagine they can taste bad because you hold your lighter near the plastic, which you'd never do on a pipe like this.

DARN, That Blue is beautiful!
Thanks :-)
Nice work on that pipe! Absolutely fitting for a Prince pipe to have a purple stem! I like your rustication technique too. Thanks for sharing!
Muy buen trabajo te felicito excelente......

What a beauty, sir! Phenomenal looking pipe.

amazing pipe work
Beautiful
my favorite shape after an oom paul...I prefer the bowl canted back rather than forward.
Nice work ! 😊
After you place the stainless steel ring on the tenon, what is that tool you use to make sure it stays there? Beautiful pipe by the way.

What size drill bit do you use for the shank?
Depends on the pipe a bit, usually 7.5mm.
@@MassisPipes ok thanks.
Beautiful pipe. Always wanted to try making my own pipe. Wondering how good those pipe kits are that are semi-shaped already?

It's simply a hook&loop pad, mounted on a stationary motor, running at 1750rpm :-)
Hi can you please tell me what you use to clean up your sanding discs, thanks
It's a sanding discs cleaning stick, made of a type of gummi I think. Got it for a few € at a local machine shop.
What is that tool with all the spikes at the tip called, please?
It's a home made rustication tool. Basically a bunch of nails without heads, glued in a handle.
$:27 wow, ive never actually seen that tool.. what does it called?
I assume you mean the one at 4:27, which is a called rustication tool. Simply put: it's a wooden handle with a bunch of nails glued into it :-)
Hi where can I buy the rasp you use to countersink the hole in the mouthpiece and the tool to rusticate ,
Thanks

Nice pipe! What do you use to paint the wood??
Fiebing's leather dye is a pipemaker's best friend :-)
you can get it off amazon: amzn.to/39h1D4N
I do not smoke. I just find them both rustic and elegant.
What's that nail gauging tool called ??
we call it a rustication tool, but it's simply a homemade handle with a bunch of nails (heads cut off) glued in.
Where do you get the plastic shaft from ?
I handcut the stem from either acrylic or resin rods (available from vermontfreehand.com for example, I get mine in germany) or from ebonite rods.
Where did you order your hand stamp from ?
I got it from Buckeye Engraving, made to my design. They deliver superb work for many craftsmen!
Do you sale your work?
Available pieces are in my Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/MassisWoodwork
Or you can always contact me directly for a custom commission :-)
Music is off
I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that must be a local issue, because it's working fine over here and there's no claims from YT.
@@MassisPipes my fault man, should have been a mite more verbose. meant to suggest the music doesnt match the subject matter. just a suggestion. great vid.
Don't the plastic gives little bad taste
Or not
Acrylic is totally inert and tastefree. The large majority of factory made pipe have stems made from acrylic too.

Pipe nice, music terrible.
