As someone who has an asthmatic cat, I can’t stress enough how important it is to video record your fur baby having an attack. He had all the tests and nothing really abnormal came up. When the vet saw the video, they were certain he had asthma. Now he is on steroids as needed and is being monitored.

I was lucky enough my girl actually had an attack during a routine vet visit, they tried to get a urine sample and i think it stressed her out being poked and prodded by three vets at once. guess if shes going to have one the exam table at the vets office is the best place to have it.

It took 3 different Veterinarians to finally get feline asthma diagnosis. The first two pushed back saying it was only a hair ball. Shame on them. If you think your cat has feline asthma and your current Vet isn’t testing, FIND A NEW VET. Once we got to 3rd Vet, our cat had developed pneumonia. Our kitty is doing better and has medication to help when he has flare ups.

This may not be asthma, could be different reasons. Mine were having allergic asthma cause from allergies. When a cat is having allergies from Black Mold, Pollen, smoke or something else. They can have "Allergic Reactions" like this causing bouts of coughing. It causes mucous to build up blocking their airway causing an asthma type episode. Allergic asthma isn't the actual disease asthma. They will prescribe Anti-biotics which will clear the mucous and inflammation from the allergies. But if you don't change the environment. Such as you keep smoking cigarettes or don't get an air purifier if you have a dusty house the cat will keep coughing like this and you'll think they have asthma for the rest of their life on cortisone asthma shots when really they just need antibiotics and you got to find the root cause of what's causing them allergies (Smoke, Dust, Pollen) etc...

My cat almost got euthanized cause she caught pneumonia on top of her asthma attacks and the first shot of my vet was last stage cancer. It's so important to also make owners aware of what to look for and how to react, also to get a 2nd opinion if you're unsure.

My cat has asthma. Going on 9 years now . This year it’s the worse as it has ever been. We are now using a compound prednisone that is transdermal . But your video is great . I have been doing exactly these procedures for years . They have kept her alive this far . She won’t do an inhaler. But working on it . I have built the cat box that I can use the neubilizer with . It’s so important to change filters on heating systems. Also a humidifier ( is a big plus ). In winter I sometimes use a vapor steamer . Unfortunately when I had gotten her she already had symptoms of exercise asthma as a kitten. I knew it would progress . I am sure it eventually effects their heart . I know she is getting close to her life span . She is the world to me. I keep a tracker on her , so I can find her at all times . Yes she is indoor/outdoor , but she doesn’t go far . And has places to hide and is actually well trained . I am not going to deny her the outdoors as she loves it and sit on my porch most of the time . I feed neighbors cats treats along with her and they play together . The thing is … Cats don’t act like they are sick … until they get close to the time . I go to 5 different vets . I got her Deprol medrol shots and Convina shots about every 2-3 months. It was becoming almost every month now in the last 5 months . I am afraid of diabetes from all the steroid shots . And of course steroids they gain weight . It’s a battle . But I wish I would of had your video 9 years ago to help me. Smells are the worst thing . Too many people with essential oils think all oils are healthy and some are just toxic to cats . Enjoy your videos. Keep on educating us.

My vet thought my cat had asthma. Got her some meds and an inhaler so I would be ready if she needed it. I was terrified because I kept thinking what if she needs me in the middle of the night or when I’m not home and I can’t help her?! Around the same time , I switched their kitty litter from Tidy Cats (because it was SO dusty) to Arm & Hammer. Problem solved! I wish my vet would have mentioned it could be the dust from the kitty litter but he didn’t. I switched it because as soon as I would clean my place it would be dusty again and I didn’t want myself or my cats to breathe that in.
Also add no incense to the list 🚫

    • @AuronFFX

absolutely avoid lightweight clay litters like tidy cat, that stuff is downright nasty, I stopped using it originally because it was staining everything, the floor, my cats fur, the washing machine, water heater which i still can't get the stains off of. I didn't know it was causing my cat's asthma attacks as well till i switched it to arm and hammer.

    • @naynay3710
      @naynay3710 Год назад

I used Tidy Cats Lightweight and couldn’t stand the dust and smell anymore, so I switched to Pretty Litter because I was hoping it would be better than all the others I’ve tried. It’s a lot more expensive, but I was desperate and willing to spend that money if it really made a difference. It was fantastic for keeping the box from smelling, but the dust was just as bad, or worse, than Tidy Cats.
But within a couple months my cat started getting sick with an upper respiratory infection, including a stuffed nose and snorting bubbles. She also started to over-groom, pulling her fur out with her teeth.
The vet gave her antibiotics to take care of the URI and said she might have asthma but we decided to just try the antibiotics first. They also said there was some evidence of skin irritation and asked if I’d changed anything in her daily routine. I explained the change in litter and they said to try another one. I did, and she got well and stopped the over-grooming. She hasn’t been sick, since. But she still makes funny sounds when she breathes, even when she’s resting. It’s not all the time, though. She completely stopped the over-grooming, too, so I believe she was allergic to it.
I never thought to try Arm & Hammer. I started using Boxicat-Pro, which isn’t lightweight, but has almost NO dust. It’s expensive (the lightweight version is more expensive), but it’s made a huge difference in the smell and dust department.

I think mine may have asthma too, she's about to turn 17 and is very healthy and happy and loving, but once in a while, she has a cough thing for a minute or two. She's done this since she was little. I asked a vet at the time and he said she was fine that she's "just coughing" - not a good answer, but apparently, it's mild because she's about to turn 17 and there's never been a major issue with it - and it's not frequent. I freaked out and rushed her to my vet, where they instantly worked on her and thankfully opened up her airways. I wish I would've seen this video before, but even now, I've gained some more insight into what I need to avoid and look for in the future, as she does still have minimal breathing issues. Side note, we (myself and the vet) cannot determine why my cat is obese. I have tried many things to get her to lose weight to no avail. My cat was just diagnosed with asthma too. He was coughing every 2 hours last weekend and I thought it was a hairball stuck but on the back of my mind i thought asthma. Sure enough! He is on prednisolone and i just got his Flovent. I am waiting on his spacer now too. He coughs once a day now like he has a hairball. I just started a YT channel to keep a video diary of his journey.

Love this video. I have an asthmatic cat and I have shared this video on social media with others who are new to cat asthma.
Two updates for you to consider:
(1)change from low dust kitty litter to “unscented” low dust kitty litter
    (2) dried catnip in catnip toys can be too dusty for asthmatic cats. Consider adding this to the list of things to remove.
My cat was blood allergy tested and Heska Allergy was the lab. My cat has been on allergy shots for a few years and it’s helped him so much that he’s off all steroids. So it’s great to hear you advocating allergy testing. So thank you for that.

@emptythoughts3060 Ginger was dumped by her previous owner, so I didn't know much about her medical history. So when I started noticing the coughing/wheezing, I recorded for the vet since it doesn't appear to be a hairball. What I meant in the original comment is when the coughing was becoming more and more frequent.

Mr. Sunday arrived suddenly at the back porch door of our semi-rural Pennsylvania home a couple of years ago and adopted us immediately. Seemed he was just dropped off in our countryside to live on mice or whatever. We thought he might have an upper respiratory infection and could need antibiotics. Vet suspicion and X-ray diagnosis was asthma, and age guessed anywhere between 9 and 14. He breathes with care, is a noisy sleeper, vocalizes and emotes a lot, and he likes to play. He has the coughing type. He's been on prednisolone and this really did work to "turn a corner", though it took a long time-months. When controlled he doesn't cough a lot, but he does go through periods when he does. Albuterol inhaler spooked the daylights out of him and was impossible to use. It seems he had quite a rough life before coming to us, abandoned then adopted, abandoned again, and he is not as feral as other cats we have adopted but almost. He cannot have his claws trimmed, for example. He will bite and attack when you least expect, sometimes in play and sometimes in annoyance. We sedate him if travel is necessary. He was left at a factory once to fend for himself (you can be a working cat) and we feel that his lungs were damaged by something inhaled there, because it is not a seasonal phenomenon with him, it is ever-present. I'm terrified that it's a progressive disease and he will at some point have difficulty breathing at all. He is super cuddly and bonded with us, and this is a comfort to all of us most of the time. But his coughing spells are devastating. How can we help him be more comfortable and avoid worsening of his condition? Thank you!

    • @wishwashrepeat
      @wishwashrepeat 2 года назад

Yes, he has had blood and stool work and has no parasites or anything that looks like an etiology of this.

Thanks to everyone who has shared stories. We are not alone. Mr Sunday is doing pretty well now on daily prednisolone. I have an asthmatic cat who also is deaf and very nervous around others. I've been giving her an inhaler every day for the past year and a half and she isn't one bit better about it. She HATES being touched and holding her and giving her the inhaler, even when. treats come after is a struggle every day. It's super frustrating for me because I used to travel a lot and now I can't go anywhere for more than a day or two without her, since nobody else can even touch her, little could they ever give her the inhaler. :(

hello, there are videos here in RUclips to overcome the inhaler issue you may want to check. my cat is on inhaler too(after a change from cortisteroids) and initially was super angsty but I tried anyway and now its easier to give her albeit once a day and two person doing it at a time. so what I did was I realised the inhaler mask was too big and covered her face(eyes etc) and caused her anxiety so I changed the mask size. then I administered the inhaler on a comfy soft padded area while my wife held her down securely. thirdly I tried gently placing the mask instead of trying to "fix" it on her face. sometimes I also played around with the mask e.g. putting on her head, on her face and just placing the mask around her to let her get used being around it. I also wrapped the aerokat spacer with a towel (since she used to be anxious around it) only exposing part of it when administering. its a less stressful situation now compared to how it was initially and hopefully it remains that way but I also have issues going for holidays (besides myself and my wife, my elderly mum won't be able to do it) but some cat boarding staff are trained to administer so if you may want to consider that option.

This is basically lung inflammation. Cats are much closer to the floor than we are. Get down on your floor to see it (and breathe it) from their point of view, and keep your floors clean. Don't use scented cleaning products of any kind, even the ones advertised as natural or citrus, they are very irritating. Keep them away from sprayed pesticides.

I have seen so many posts on Facebook by people talking about their cats wheezing, having coughing fits, and developing asthma.
Then when asked if anyone smokes in their home they deny their smoking is the cause, they don’t respond (one later showed a “funny” photo of their cat chasing cigarette wrappers), or say their cat loves to come sit when them when they smoke weed. Or that their cat likes. My cat has coughing fits when my neighbour (in a different detached house) smokes a lot of weed long term.
People just refuse to accept that cannabis is toxic.
I also have allergic asthma due to cannabis, and my life is difficult, even more difficult, since legalization. It was bad before then, but worse afterwards.
More people need to understand how harmful all secondhand smoke is. Especially for pets. The number of people who smoke around pets is disgusting. It’s abusive.

Thank you! great info. I lost my beautiful Ming to asthma a few months ago. I did all of things suggested in the video in terms of combating allergens and mitigating stress. She was on steroids, three different inhalers and saw a specialist. In spite of all her breathing continued to become more labored, she barely ate and got weaker and weaker. I had to have her PTS. I was devastated and also very frustrated that nothing helped her for long. I wonder if she had something else going on that was very difficult to diagnose.

@@Thisisit69420 Hi and thank you for your kind words. I have had two kitties with asthma: one severe and one mild. Ming the kitty with a severe condition had several attacks a day and got to the point where she was always in a state of very labored breathing. Fluid would build-up in her chest cavity as well. She got to the point where she couldn't eat very well and was losing weight. That is why her vet and I came to the conclusion that her quality of life was poor so PTS. On the other hand, Clover has mild asthma; it sounds like your kitty's case is also mild. I agree that one attack a day, if mild and if it doesn't interfere with eating etc. is acceptable. My regular vet plus specialty vet both stated that you only want to use inhaler for severe attacks that occur regularly. FYI, I purchased several different types of inhaler medications (Albuturol, Fluticasone and Salmeterol & Fluticasone together) plus mask device to go over cat's nose/mouth to administer the meds. If you and your vet decide together that your baby needs inhaler meds, will you let me know? I will gift you what I have. I'm in Greenville, SC and these meds are extremely expensive in the U.S. I took the scripts to canadapharmacy.com and purchased them at a fraction of the price. Sending you powerful healing energy and support, Diana (email: dianarigdc58@gmail.com)

I know milk can cause diarrhoea but most of my cats were always able to lick my yoghurt bowl or have a little bit of cheese. When stopping giving her any of this, it took about 2 months for her cough to clear up. Sometimes she gets a bit of dairy/cheese by mistake (it's in treats, or she fishes a bit of my plate I forget to put away) the cough comes back for a few days.

My cat had skin issues a couple of years ago. They cleared up with cortsol for a while. When they came back I tried the hypoallergenic food for 8 weeks. She was symptom free for over two years after I went back to her normal food. In July she started coughing. Diagnosed with asthma in August. 4 weeks of cortisol. The cough went away but came back after a couple of weeks. I'm now waiting on the inhaler to arrive so we can get going with that.
Would it be worth it giving her the special food and see if her cough would lessen or go away with the hypoallergenic food?

My cat makes a weird breathing sound mostly when he's at rest. It sounds more like a stuffed up nose than anything, maybe like a snoring sound. It doesn't happen all the time. He doesn't ever cough, sneeze, etc. And he seems to have no problem getting air. He's been breathing like since I got him over 2 years ago and it hasn't gotten worse or better. I did bring him to a vet and they were practically no help. They blamed it on his weight, despite me telling them he was making the noise even BEFORE he was neutered and put on weight from that. He's not even that fat of a cat IMO. I've definitely seen bigger than him. I thouht it might have been asthma, but they didn't agree and didn't really look hard enough to come up with any answer other than his weight.

It sounds as if she's having a hard time breathing, but it's intermittent and, of course, never when she's at the vet, so they can't diagnose it. Sometimes, it's very faint, and other time it's very loud. She always looks great and healthy when being examined. And, again, of course she never appears to be in distress about it.
