BIG Mistake ⁉️ - Investing Through Your Bank

  • In today’s video we are going to talk about investing to build wealth. Whether you invest with a bank or through another platform.
There’s nothing that excites me more than someone that is ready to invest! 🤩
What excites me even more is when they DO take action.
But here is the problem with that, there are so many different options, and maybe the option you choose isn’t the best for you.
I am going to share a reader question today, from someone that did invest with their local bank. 🏦 We are going to talk about whether investing with a bank is the best, or right decision for you.
The first thing that you need to realize is that is if you invest with a bank, some people think that there is some added protection (FDIC, right). So we think our bank money is insured so our investments should be protected. 🏦
    FALSE. 🚫
That does not apply to your investments.
Let’s take a look at the question: “I went to TD today to try to open up the Roth IRA and they were telling me that a CD would be better cause you get better rates. I haven’t decided yet but I was wondering if you could help me out? I’m only 24 yrs old and trying to expand my investments.”
🤔 WHAT? First of all let’s give this ready some PROPS, he is 24 and taking an initiative in investing.
I asked more questions and he shared with me the percentage rates that the bank shared with him.
If the bank doesn’t have any sort of investment channels, that bank is only going to be able to offer you CDs, money markets, and passbook savings.
All of those are FDIC protected, but you aren’t getting any return. The bank can’t offer you stocks, mutual funds, etc. They can only offer you banking products.
Apparently the person at the bank that gave my reader this information, either didn’t know or didn’t share this information. 🤔
Either way, this is not where you want to go to open a Roth IRA. You want to put that money into something that will grow over the long term.
I’ve seen too often that these advisors that work in banks or credit unions, operate solely on commission. So, if they are trying to recommend that you buy something, they are going to get paid once you buy that thing. That is not 100% of the time but it does happen a lot.
If you want to invest, go to an investment firm, or an online investment platform. These companies are set up specifically for investing opportunities
I wonder how many people out there have had similar situations where they are just getting this kind of horrible advice?
If that is you, I’m curious, let us know in the comments below if you’ve went to a bank or credit union to get advice and the person you talked to just didn’t know what they were talking about.
We want to make sure that is not happening to you, we want you to hack your wealth and make sure your money is being put where it should be.

Hey Jeff, Thanks for another enlightening video. I'm glad this guy reached out and asked before taking the teller's advice! Hey, can you cover the topic of splitting accounts across banks once you reach the FDIC threshold of ensured deposits/investment balances? Wondering if we need to be super diligent to keep the balance within the insured amount or do we ever want to trust these big banks to be too big to fail? If you've already touched on this I would appreciate the link. Thanks for all you do for us who are continuously seeking financial enlightenment!

The representative for the Bank could have been telling the truth. At my brick and mortar credit union if I invest through their ROTH IRA I will get a return of .60%, a 12 month CD is 1.25%. Banks take zero risk when it comes to their Roth IRA portfolios, and people who choose a bank for a Roth IRA are looking for a guaranteed return, therefore their returns will definitely be lower. It sounds like the banker gave him the options based on what his bank has to offer.
I know it is not the best option for the 24 year old, but it might be the best that particular bank could offer.

Im 18 years old and did the same thing the man you made mention of in your video. But instead, I heard 3.6% interest for a youth account and jumped on it. And since I went in there looking to set up a retirement account I had them set it up for the longest time frame possible. So I guess they teach clerks to do that nowadays. Kinda sucks for beginners like me.

Jeff, you might of just saved me so much headache... I’m also 24, and I currently have about $5000 in a regular 401(k). I went to my credit union to ask about a Roth. They couldn’t give me any information because the employees had no idea... I got a brochure with about 2 sentences about a Roth on it 😓 So I’ve been sitting here for a week pondering if I should roll my 401(k) to Betterment in a Roth.
I am proud of myself though, over this last month I did finally invest in stocks through the stock market. I don’t have big money like you yet so I only have 5 shares 😂 but I’m working with it! Lol
Also: you said you guys relocated to Nashville... we plan on relocating within 2-3 years.... what can I do to financially prepare? Is there anything that came up that you didn’t expect? Anything you would do differently? I want to get started on this ASAP.
PS: You need to talk to Barnes and Noble. Your book is taking way too long to get shipped to my house. 😂

My credit union, both of them in fact, are partnered with a firm of financial advisers. I went to one when I was first trying to understand investing. I wasnt sure what questions to ask, but he said he couldnt really give advice on what to invest in, but did give me tips on where to look for investment information, including detailed stock info, and it was a worthwhile visit.
But the odd thing was when he said, if I remember and understood correctly, that if I bought stocks with him, it would cost $100 or something like that. It was some outrageous fee that even had him suggesting I dont bother lol
I mean come on, this was worse than most firms like TD Ameritrade, Schwab, etc...
I dont recommend any bank at all for stock investing. Their focus isnt on that, and its better to go with somebody who is focused on what you want to focus on.

    Hello,
I am 17 years old and would love to start investing and have started doing lots of research and watching lots of videos on it. But I still cannot figure out how to start? I wanted to start a Robinhood account but I really don’t understand how you make money from that AND, you have to be 18 to start a robinhood account. Is there a specific website you go to to start investing or getting mutual funds or etfs? What about buying stocks/shares in a company like Amazon or the Walt Disney company, how would one do that?

    • @waltermh111
      @waltermh111 5 лет назад +2

M1 Finance would be a better bet for those starting out. No fees, preset pies that will help you pick good stocks and you can take time to learn more before jumping in too deep.
It lets you invest in your own stocks also, has fractional share investing, which is best for those with low amounts to invest monthly, meaning that you can buy that $600 stock with only $60, and essentially, they will buy 10% of that stock for you, and you really own and if possible, will get 10% of dividends from it.
Its a great new age feature for low input investors.
You need to be 18 to invest in anything, period, so just focus on saving money for now.
A Roth IRA needs $500 to start. A basic taxable account needs $100.
Other investments also have minimums, such as Fundrise, which is $500.
There are platforms with no minimum, but you might as well have a nice sum ready to start, and you will want savings in the bank for back up money so you arent feeling like you are living check to check.
Basically, dont think that just because you have your money in an investment account, that it is completely liquid. It isnt a replacement for a savings account.
Read online about this if you havent. You want 3-6 months of bills in savings. I only keep 3 months because my bills total so little, but the higher your living costs, the more you want as back up since anything could happen. Invest over that amount.
I am saving in my savings account and investing at the same time, but like I said, my bills are so low that I am not worried. I could pay rent etc.. with a part time job that I could get in a month or less.
So no need to rush into investing too quickly, and when you do, diversify :)

Ups and downs all the time, but mostly ups and picking the right stocks that will weather the storm. I have all dividend stocks so I expect them to make up the difference at worst (these are stocks that have a good history of paying out dividends of 3-6%)
