try fruit flies! you can make a trap for them pretty easy with a water bottle an a piece of apple or other fruit. you remove the cap and cup off the top where the bottle stops curving so you have kinda a funnel and a cup. put the fruit in the bottom cup part then put the top funnel part with the mouth of the bottle pointing down to the fruit inside. tape the edges in a couple of spots. set it in a warm spot and it'll get you some fruit flies for her easy. I used to feed my green anole like that. the biggest worry with aphids is that they can produce a sugar like substance so they can be not the best choice. though it does make her a great friend for your garden!

Recently on Snake Discovery there was a rescue video where over 20 reptiles were rescued from an abandonment situation. That includes a couple types of geckos, leopard and morning ones I think? You can see the video for an example of what a dehydrated+thin gecko/lizard looks like and how they look when they've recovered
as someone who was an owner of two geckos, it's impressive how quickly and thoroughly you guys figured out what the gecko needed! though mine were leopard geckos, the biggest thing I'd just like to suggest is stick to getting your advice from actual reptile experts/owners rather than AI like chatgpt ;; there's unfortunately still a lot of misinformation being spread with AI due to it taking public data for its training so sometimes it'll mention things from already proven incorrect posts from reddit or elsewhere. hope it's been fun taking care of the new lizard friend, I just know she'll be in good hands with you two!
You don't have to worry about variety too much. It's not uncommon for geckos to only eat one type of insect. I have 3 that will only eat crickets and others that will eat anything that moves. Proper humidity should allow for a good shed cycle. If you see some skin that hasn't come off the go to treatment is a warm water soak for about 10 minutes and gently removing the stuck skin with tweezers.
😂 I work at a pet store in Ontario, Canada, and in the middle of February (VERY cold winter), someone from the garden center of the grocery store across the parking lot brought me a tiiiiny ringneck snake they had found in a shipment of plants. I tried to find a rescue that would take him, but no one could, so I ended up doing exactly this. The terrarium with all the necessary supplies, the crying over having to chop up worms for him (he was so tiny he could only eat fishing bait, and only chopped up), the panic about him eating ONLY worms, the worry over the quality of the worms (couldn't do sidewalk worms in case of pesticides) etc. etc.

I've owned several geckos and the fact that its eating and letting you handle it almost immediately is great, they usually are skittish at first but this one seems to just know its in good hands.
My guess why it wouldn't leave her hand at first was "hamd warm" and the initial lack of skittishness could have been just the fact the little geck was likely cold and sluggish since it was found near a doorway.
Gecko owner here. You guys are doing an amazing job with your new little buddy. She came as a surprise pet that you had 0 plans of having and yet you did amazing research and immediately ended up taking better care of him than at least 80% of people who intentionally buy a pet lizard. I love you guys!
As a bit of a reptile hobbyist, I am so happy and appreciative that you did some research for that little gal to keep her properly while you have her :). I don't know much about geckos specifically, but y'all look to be doing a pretty great job! Calcium is awesome, and doing the multivitamin and calcium+d3 once a month sounds great. Honestly, you guys won't have her for long enough to probably result in issues from a limited diet for a couple months. I don't know if this species requires any additional heat, but if they live in houses during the wintertime then room temperature might be good enough for them (like crested geckos). You guys are doing great, I don't think I would worry too much :)
Congratulations on your new lizard daughter! The crickets will also eat any vegetable scraps you don't end up composting, making them even more nutritious. Also if you're able to get mealworms, those might be a bit more appealing for her and they'd be easier to dust with calcium and multivitamin powder
Rachel has evolved into a Helicopter Parent Gecko Mum. "uhmmm... MY bebe only eats the ~finest~ organic, homegrown, GM-free, keto, gluten free, single-source, high qulity aphids. None of that pet shop, factory-grown nonsense - thank you very much!" I wonder what Rachel-mon will evolve into next?
That "gecko research" then sideways straw sip was amazing! Edit after watching the whole thing: In America they sell bug catching boxes for kids that have mesh walls and a swivel door you could use to help you get food for her. If you really want to up her terrain, I bet you could figure out how to rig a flowing water set up like a mini fountain in there. But if all this doesn't work and she doesn't make it, you did your best and I hope you don't take it too hard. These are obviously not house pets for a reason and seem kind of delicate.
A good way to catch flying bugs is a light at night and some white mesh like Jun has on his plants, shining the light on the mesh bugs get on it and you can just scoop them up. But if it's too cold I'm surprised anything is flying out there right now. I have no idea if she's thin or just very young but a good appetite is always a good sign.
This is amazing! I have a bearded dragon and use to be a herp zookeeper. You guys are already taking 100x better care of her than unfortunately a lot of people do when they intentionally get a reptile. She looks very healthy, so she should do just fine for a couple weeks. Thank you for doing your research!!
She is absolutely adorable. Please don't use AI ''cause it's absolutely useless and can actually harm and kill creatures. Thank you for helping the gekko.
Seconding this, AI is worse than useless, just one Chat GPT search guzzles up more energy than one household uses in an entire year. It’s horrific for the environment and doesn’t even provide accurate information. Even the Google AI “overview”frequently doles out complete misinformation.
I love this! It'll be great to reflect and say "Remember that time we adopted a gecko for a few months?" You are such amazing humans. Good luck to little gecko!
I hope you're not too sad when you release her in the spring. If I were taking care of this little baby, I would keep her as a pet forever. Thank you for caring for her!
You're doing fantastic!! If you wanted to, you could look into bioactive vivariums- I think Jun would enjoy the research and setup, they have a lot in common with naturalistic aquariums. It's an easy way to keep tropical plants that need higher humidity, too. At this size of enclosure, you'd just need a bag of LECA and a bag of substrate to set up, and even if the gecko only needs it for a month or so, you'd have a lovely terrarium to keep afterwards! It would also be a good way to keep up diet variety & hunting- springtails and baby isopods would likely be an appealing size and keep that hunting instinct active.
Loving the expansion of the household to now include a gecko XD I own geckos myself, mainly leopards and cresties, but been in the exotics hobby for a while now. For geckos a good rule of thumb of how big feeder should be is that it should'nt be bigger than the distance between their eyes, and from what I see and notice is that they don't eat food that's too small either. I have full confidence that this lil girl will be in great care till spring :D
I also have a feeling that the reason it goes for your home grown all natural aphids is probably cause it simply prefers them over the crickets XD and worry not, it is honestly rather comforting knowing that the feeders are raised with the food you grow- so everything is natural and healthy :)
I'm so glad you took the backing of that terrarium off! I had the exact same terrarium for my baby snake, and all he did was just CRAWL BEHIND IT and I was FREAKING OUT every time I didn't find him
Idk about these little guys, but with Leopard geckos, you have to limit the amount of vitamin D they receive in calcium, because it can cause vitamin D Toxicity. Also, in America, there are some breeders and keepers that specialize in tiny little lizards. You might be able to get some more info reaching out to Mourning Gecko breeders, a species found originally in china, so they probably have similar care.
The Japanese sources said to be careful about giving her too much D3! Most say yamori can have it maybe once a month. Right now she's only getting straight calcium powder without the added D3.
@@RachelandJunAdventures Jumping in to also confirm that you need to limit the amount of D3 your reptile gets - even diurnal species like I keep I don't give them D3 supplements. Most reptiles get the appropriate amount of D3 in their diet by basking in the sun where they get a precursor to vitamin D. It's sent to the liver, it becomes D3, and then its processed into ANOTHER molecule that helps with calcium absorption! It's part of the reason why you'll see a lot of articles about the importance of D3 in their diet, however, this process looks different with nocturnal and crepuscular critters. If you're unsure, the absolute BEST thing you could do is to get a low wattage (below 50watts) basking bulb with UVB/A and run it during daylight hours, and turn it off at night. Your little gal probably doesn't need it, but itll mimic their natural environment more. Call it bonus points :]
Rachel's compassion is so immense I'm amazed at all the kindness and love you two have for the creatures of this earth! When Rachel thought the crickets were cute I laughed but it's so sweet you can see beauty everywhere!
This little Girl has no Idea how Lucky she was... Just imagine what would have happened if Poky were to find her first... To be fair, nobody would have ever known. It would forever remain a mystery in the depth of Pokys belly ;-)
I'm glad you're taking gecko care so seriously! Consulting experts and reptile keepers is definitely the best way. I appreciate the verve with which you jump into any project you set your mind to! (and ooh, the Sakuraco box looks tasty! I'm excited for mine to arrive 👀)
you guys are amazing and I love you just adopted this little guy and your taking amazing care of him! We had a fat tail Gecko years ago and he was so sweet. You are good animal people, love your channel!!
Please take care and remove the small hair (cats hair?) from the root and anywhere else. It can wrap around the geckos legs or toes and cause problem for blood supply in his limbs!
@@RachelandJunAdventuresi just finished watching and i didn’t knew that it is 3 weeks already with you, I thought just a couple of days. I think as long she is eating at least something she is okay. lizards and geckos and the waterliving ones (don’t know the name right now) are quite slim by nature but I also don’t know about perfect weight
THE CAT WALL HAS BEEN BREACHED! IT'Z LIZARD TIEM BEBY!!!! Be careful in feeding her crickets, she's probably still much too little unless they're like baby crickets. A general rule of thumb is don't feed them anything longer than the distance between their eyes. Oh dang nvm those are teeny crickets
You should start dropping them randomly unless you plan on keeping her because she needs to learn to hunt for herself! But something tells me you should just name her and keep her 😂 you already love her! 🥰
"Iiiii have done ✨gecko research✨." This is so sweet, I am delighted to learn about yamori! On the rare occasion, I'll find baby geckos in my bathroom (on the second floor so I had NO clue how they made their way there until I saw the climbing lol) and I'll typically relocate them outside under a bush by my home. Nagi is such a sweet little protector of little house guardians!
Ah, the fabled Dragon Distribution system has finally chosen you! This means you'll have to go on an adventure to slay goblins and save adventurers in distress!
I love geckos! We have them in Argentina too and we also think that it's great to have in the home and it's said they bring good luck. I have several around my home in the middle of the city.
Okay, this is so very cute of you to help her out!! Unfortunately I can't offer advice since my reptile of choice is very tubular and doesn't have legs (Pancake says hi!) but we're cheering you on!
Rachel being a kind and good person makes a good and warm home to a wild geko. She gives the geko food and a small den so it can be ready for the summer. Rachel releases the geko back into the wild and it gets eaten by a bird.
Please don't use AI or Chat GPT for anything. Not only it is not reliable for information (AT ALL), it is so bad for the environment too. 😭 The gecko is very cute tho, I hope it survives to spring.
Biggest suggestion overall is DO NOT CONSULT AI ANYTHING. Not only are the answers not guaranteed to be accurate (Which when your dealing with living things is a HUGE risk), AI anything actively harms the environment. You and Jun do such a good job caring for and respecting nature in all forms, please don't use something that is causing it harm. Everyone can deny it all they want but AI generation of any kind (especially images) has been scientifically proven to cause damage to the environment and when bigger names like yourselves talk about using it, even if a small quick mention, more people will try it and thus cause more harm.
dechlorinate the water for the gecko! you can order dechlorination solution online. it's blue and comes in a little plastic bottle and it only takes a few drops to make tap water safe for animals like geckos, frogs, etc. it's called reptisafe in the US. it's very important that the gecko does not touch chlorinated water (aka, normal tap water) as it can harm their fragile little skin :(
also, to avoid rickets further, you can get a special lamp called a UVB lamp. for something as wee as your gecko, you would get a very low watt bulb. it's recommended to better guarantee they get enough calcium and d3 to prevent it!
As a reptile keeper I can't tell you how happy this video made my heart!! Thank you SO SO much for protecting this adorable little girl and not viewing her as disgusting or a worthless pest. Geckos make great pets. Especially the bigger ones, but the small ones are great to watch, too.
To make crickets grow to a good feedable size for your reptile the small little potatoes if you cut them in half and put them on the side of the tank they have a habit of eating it and sucking up the nutrients so they will grow just don't put too many potatoes in there for a manual size that she's so she gets so used to tongue feeding I don't think she'll make it back into the outside world cuz she comes to you when you tongue feed her she'll expect that from other humans after the fact so she might not survive back in the wild you can hope for the best but that's my opinion
Looks like you guys are raising a garden guardian. She’ll start developing a taste for aphids and protect your plants as thanks for taking care of her during the winter 😆
I don't know if you can get them where you live, but dubia roaches are SUPER good feeders. They're fairly easy to care for, they don't stink, they don't make noise, they don't cannibalize like crickets do, and they can live up to two years. You can easily get your own colony going to keep her fed, and you could even see about selling surplus. I'd recommend seeing if you can have them where you are and if you can, doing some research into them.
I don't know how Gekkos feel about it. But wingless fruit flies are pretty easy to keep and multiply! (And maybe not as cute as crickets). Plus since its a model organism, there is lots of protocols on how to best keep and maintain them (they really need only a tube with an agar bottom with some nutrients and a piece of paper so they dont stick to it. And some cotton fluff on the top for easy airflow and access)
Hi rachael, i have a crested gecko and she is fed repashy crested gecko powder. Vitamin D is usually included in repashy food mixes for all species which require it. Looks like you are doing a great job. If your gecko eats any fruit jist stay away from acidic fruit as this damages their bones. If you can get hold of small size locusts your gecko may also like these. Coir substrate is good for ground layer, as it retains moisture and for burrowing and laying eggs. Hope this helps.
My gecko prefers having a backdrop on the sides of her enclosure as it makes her feel more secure. Also, she might eat isopods and springtails that can be raised in soil in the tank. Food items should be no larger than the width between her eyes. Good luck!
This reminds me of when I found 2 little sparrows that couldn't fly yet and took care of them for a few weeks until they finally flew, it was a lot of work but I felt very good about myself.
I really recommend the Snake Discovery RUclips channel for more info on reptile keeping! You can probably farm wingless fruit flies for the little friend, and mealworms and dubia roaches for the little critter as she gets bigger. You can dust her bugs in the calcium powder so she gets calcium into her system. You kinda plop the bug in a little baggie of calcium and shake it around
Something you could try is feeding her fruit flies. Hydei or malagascar fruit flies are common with small amphibians and reptiles and theyre easy to cultivate at home. You can dust them with calcium and other multivitamin powder.
That's a nice way to see gecko's. I never really considered much of them before. But we have huge ones and I'm really scared of them but their noise is like a lullaby for sleep.
Countdown to three years from now, and Rachel doing a video tour of her new lizard room with homemade shelving units and a very intricate misting system. There are twelve lizards now. A snake will soon be arriving. Poki still screams for food.
Please don't get advice from chat GPT- its job is to make sentences, it is not concerned with providing factual information! If Lil Miss isn't near a window you may need to get her a UVB lamp. Natural sunlight is important for reptiles to keep their bones healthy
I wouldn't expect anything less from tenderhearted Rachel 😊 You're doing good! I wish I had some advice but I'm only a bit familiar with crested geckos.
I had one of these fellas last year in the summer (Kotschy's gecko). Woke up one morning and saw it on the wall next to me in my bedroom. I didn't want it to get stuck there and didn't know how to take care of it so I released it. I somewhat regret doing that, I should've just moved it in the living room, easier to get out from there on its own and there was food, we had indoor plants and tiny flies were getting inside at night, to the point it caused one of the cellar spiders to lay.
Back in the summer of 2023, a baby House Gecko (and I mean hatchling, it's a possibility that his egg was laid in a suitcase) hitchhiked in my mom's luggage from Mexico to Ohio. We found him an impressive amount of time for a Gecko to hide from 3 cats later on August 16th, and set up an enclosure for him. My stepdad had actually always wanted reptiles or amphibians, and I tried to convince my ophidiophobic mother to get me a snake all through middle school. I wanted to name him Flame Retardant Tile, but was outvoted with Tajín. He lived until September 9th. We took good care of him, but the smaller the animal, the more prone they are to die unexpectedly. By that time, my stepdad had gotten so involved and hyperfixated that he had another enclosure set up, and that's where we have our Mourning Geckos. He set up another enclosure (he was scooping up every old aquarium in our area istg) and then we went to a reptile show for Dart Frogs which by now also have their own enclosure with a pair of Mourning Geckos and an Anole. Anyways we came home from the reptile show with a Crested Gecko my mom wouldn't let me name Fiberglass Insulation (he's PINK!) and he's my son Sputnik who I miss very dearly since I am not allowed to have him in my dorm. The moral of the story is that when you find a small lizard in your house and you can't let it outside that is now your lizard and we're going to have to split these two nickels between us.
LET'S GOOO!!! I am SO EXCITED, one of my favorite channels is becoming a herp (herpetology) channel too!! Thank you for taking on the challenge of taking care of the yamori even though it's not a standard cute mammal. Love, from a cat and snake mama 🐈⬛🐍🐍💖 Only thing I'd recommend is making sure she has a heat gradient so she can thermoregulate. Since she's nocturnal, do something like a ceramic heat emitter or a radiant heat panel because those don't generate light. Get a thermostat too for that; not just a thermometer. You need the heat source to stay consistent and turn on/off by itself so you don't have to remember to check. In all seriousness, she looks healthy (not dehydrated, not skinny, etc) and you're doing almost EVERYTHING I would already recommend. You're taking care to ensure humidity without compromising heat, you're allowing her to exhibit natural behaviors in her hiding, climbing, "hunting", etc. You're cognizant of her being nocturnal and feed her at the appropriate time for that. You're feeding daily while she's a juvenile. You're even basically gut loading the prey by making sure they're healthy/fat/full of other nutritional components. Maybe also try doing small mealworms or something too if the crickets don't work out? But really, you're doing better than 99% of first time herp owners!!

there are automated timed misters for reptile keeping if Rachel wanted to go that route
Rachel has made the transition to lizard parent seamlessly 😭 welcome to reptile keeping lol
Even the Google AI “overview”frequently doles out complete misinformation.
number one : love the transition with the cat wheel! NUMBER TWO: the gecko is so cute....i love how much you guys seem to enjoy taking care of her
Nagi is such a good little bro for finding a cute gecko for Rachel and Jun to have another family member!
Aaaa I loved the 'Nagi on the treadmill' transition! 😹
Rachel's hair always strikes me as so cool how it matches Haku and Nagi's orange catness.
I LOVE you turned on SUPER MOM mode and started spoiling her hehehe I hope you guys can safely release her and cant wait to see more updates thank you
I love this!
Rachel is the perfect mother of animals.
I'm so glad you took the backing of that terrarium off! I had the exact same terrarium for my baby snake, and all he did was just CRAWL BEHIND IT and I was FREAKING OUT every time I didn't find him
Rachel hunting for bugs is top tier content
Truly
Idk about these little guys, but with Leopard geckos, you have to limit the amount of vitamin D they receive in calcium, because it can cause vitamin D Toxicity. Also, in America, there are some breeders and keepers that specialize in tiny little lizards. You might be able to get some more info reaching out to Mourning Gecko breeders, a species found originally in china, so they probably have similar care.
The Japanese sources said to be careful about giving her too much D3! Most say yamori can have it maybe once a month. Right now she's only getting straight calcium powder without the added D3.
@@RachelandJunAdventuresmakes sense as vitamin d comes from sun exposure and they are nocturnal
Thank you Sakurako! For helping keep the gecko alive! Thank you Rachel for obsessively researching gecko behavior and diet!
This little Girl has no Idea how Lucky she was... Just imagine what would have happened if Poky were to find her first... To be fair, nobody would have ever known. It would forever remain a mystery in the depth of Pokys belly ;-)
I think the name Juno fits her very well :) You guys are so kind for helping her out like that!
04:58 i guess you could say they're "safe-phids" 🤪
I'm glad you're taking gecko care so seriously! Consulting experts and reptile keepers is definitely the best way. I appreciate the verve with which you jump into any project you set your mind to!
(and ooh, the Sakuraco box looks tasty! I'm excited for mine to arrive 👀)
you guys are amazing and I love you just adopted this little guy and your taking amazing care of him! We had a fat tail Gecko years ago and he was so sweet. You are good animal people, love your channel!!
Rachel, your good judgment and compassion give me hope. Thank you both for being who you are.
Please take care and remove the small hair (cats hair?) from the root and anywhere else. It can wrap around the geckos legs or toes and cause problem for blood supply in his limbs!
Will do next time I clean the cage!!
"Iiiii have done ✨gecko research✨."
This is so sweet, I am delighted to learn about yamori! On the rare occasion, I'll find baby geckos in my bathroom (on the second floor so I had NO clue how they made their way there until I saw the climbing lol) and I'll typically relocate them outside under a bush by my home. Nagi is such a sweet little protector of little house guardians!
GOOD JOB, RACHEL! You are such an attentive gekko mom (and cat mom!)!
Two videos from R&J in one day? WOW! 🧧🧧🎁🎁🦎🐈🐈🐈⬛🐈⬛
I am rolling!!! You couldn’t be more attentive or concerned if it were one of your precious fur babies! Love that about you and Jun.❤❤❤
So cute hahaha. I'm sure you guys will be able to release it this spring. Until then, one more soul isn't too much I guess? haha
I can't wait till this evolution continues and we get "I guess we have a Tanuki?".
I dream of a world where Rachel and Jun own a menagerie
Jun & Rachel just got a side quest
dechlorinate the water for the gecko! you can order dechlorination solution online. it's blue and comes in a little plastic bottle and it only takes a few drops to make tap water safe for animals like geckos, frogs, etc. it's called reptisafe in the US. it's very important that the gecko does not touch chlorinated water (aka, normal tap water) as it can harm their fragile little skin :(
also, to avoid rickets further, you can get a special lamp called a UVB lamp. for something as wee as your gecko, you would get a very low watt bulb. it's recommended to better guarantee they get enough calcium and d3 to prevent it!
Since your cat-child found the gecko-child, does that technically make you gecko grandparents? 🤔
I came back to this channel after many many years and Jun's english has come such a long wayyy! I'm so proud of him! 英語本当に上手になったんですね😲✨
My gecko prefers having a backdrop on the sides of her enclosure as it makes her feel more secure. Also, she might eat isopods and springtails that can be raised in soil in the tank.
Food items should be no larger than the width between her eyes.
Good luck!
As an aspiring veterinarian and a fellow animal lover, your care for all animals big and small is so wonderful to see 💗
So qt! I love all types of lizard-y animals
This reminds me of when I found 2 little sparrows that couldn't fly yet and took care of them for a few weeks until they finally flew, it was a lot of work but I felt very good about myself.
The world needs more people like you
I really recommend the Snake Discovery RUclips channel for more info on reptile keeping! You can probably farm wingless fruit flies for the little friend, and mealworms and dubia roaches for the little critter as she gets bigger. You can dust her bugs in the calcium powder so she gets calcium into her system. You kinda plop the bug in a little baggie of calcium and shake it around
Stooooop the Nagi in the wheel transition is so cute omggg😭💕
as a lizard lover, this warms my heart so much
Something you could try is feeding her fruit flies. Hydei or malagascar fruit flies are common with small amphibians and reptiles and theyre easy to cultivate at home. You can dust them with calcium and other multivitamin powder.
I love the running wheel transition!
I love that u guys use ur kitty running on the wheel for the scene breaks LOL
its so cute how much rachel loves animals!!! so refreshing
Those crickets were really tiny!! I'm really impressed with everything you have done to help this gecko!
I love how you are taking care of the gecko until it can be released!
Please don't get advice from chat GPT- its job is to make sentences, it is not concerned with providing factual information!
If Lil Miss isn't near a window you may need to get her a UVB lamp. Natural sunlight is important for reptiles to keep their bones healthy
I wouldn't expect anything less from tenderhearted Rachel 😊
You're doing good!
Love, from a cat and snake mama 🐈⬛🐍🐍💖
Only thing I'd recommend is making sure she has a heat gradient so she can thermoregulate.
But really, you're doing better than 99% of first time herp owners!!
the cat ball transition is so clever?? And it's adorable!
Just finished watching Jun's vlog now hopping onto dis one hehe
