    We’re constantly updating the written portion of this guide as new merino wool products are released and the travel landscape changes: packhacker.com/guide/merino-w...
    Packing for a trip can be such a chore and requires some tough decisions. You have eight favorite shirts, but only have room for four. You may not know when and where you’ll be able to do laundry on your journey-and that’s the fun & spontaneity of travel! Do you bring more clothes to last longer between washes or less and just say screw it? If you’re hitting up snowy mountains and balmy beaches in one trip, do you try to pack clothes for all seasons and end up with a huge, overweight bag?
    Well, Merino wool can solve a lot of your packing problems. It is one of the best travel fabrics out there, straight up. Packing one Merino tee is like the equivalent of packing five cotton tees when it comes to freshness. It will keep you cool in the heat, warm in the cold, you don’t have to wash it every time you wear it and we almost guarantee it will become your favorite shirt-so you’ll only need a few. It’s going to cost you a pretty penny for the better brands, but the benefits of the material are worth it… if you take care of it correctly.
    The bottom line of whether or not it’s worth the extra dough is completely up to you. But if you’re a serious minimalist traveler that dislikes frequent trips to the laundromat-Merino will help you travel lighter & faster.

    Hey Pack Hacker Community! Tom - the founder here. What are some of your favorite Merino Wool Products? I'm a big fan of Outlier T-Shirts (Ultrafine & Runweight), and Darn Tough Socks (I still can't get over the lifetime warranty ... that actually works ... on socks!).

    Great review. Love It. I am a merino addict since 2015, when I first tried merino clothes on a trip to Mount Kenya. Since then... Merino is my love, passion and everyday companion. Because I wear merino everyday... from work to picnics, from social events, concerts,.. to school... In 7 years I managed to completely change my wardrobe with merinos. This is why I decided to launch my own brand in few weeks. Why? I think people should know more about how merino helps them with their health. It is great for travelling, for sport,... but why wear something that is best for my body, only when I do sport or travelling? Why not everyday, every hour, every minute,... when I am at work, hiking or sleeping? Merino is life changer.

    The great thing about the merino wool buff is the protectiveness you feel when the gusts of wind (10mph, 20mph, 30mph) whips around. I always have mine with me when winter hits the north east. I give them as gifts for friends and family.

    Great vid as always. I got my feet wet in merino with Wooly t shirts and a henley and take just 2 with me on 2 week trips. I’ve found if I air them out overnight after wearing them all day that they are fresh for the next day. I usually alternate them and they dry overnight if I wash them in the sink. I’ve since bought and use the Icebreaker hoody, buff and their socks and after not liking the shininess of the W&P Oxford have purchased 2 dress shirts from Libertad Apparel which are cut slimmer, wrinkle less and have a hidden passport/currency pocket in it. They started as a Kickstarter project and were created by a traveler for travelers.

    First off, I love merino wool. I picked up a merino buff and a hat spontaneously when I was in Montreal and some friends wanted to go up Mont Royal (in early November - very windy and pretty chilly). I have never regretted the purchase and have used the buff in almost every configuration except as an eye mask. So I wanted to look into shirts, but MAN they are expensive. And I am not even talking about Patagucci or anything. But 60+ Euros for a T-Shirt...that stings. I am not willing to shell out that kind of money at this point but I totally get that people do this. For T-Shirts I am perfectly happy with my Under Armour Heatgear Tac T-Shirts. Simple, low-key, I can wear them at least twice between washes, they are just awesome for working out, AND: I am not walking around like a billboard with a huge brand logo plastered all over my body. And I can get one for approx 20 Euros, so that is a no-brainer for me.

      Hey there! Glad your enjoying the merino buff and hat. Merino clothing can definitely be pricy but synthetic options, like your UA, work well too! Be sure to check out our website as we get closer to the holidays for the inside scoop on sales from our favorite retailers!

    Anyone have a merino tee with a longer torso? All of the ones I've checked out are pretty short. I wear a large, but really need XL in length, so finding shirts is difficult if there isn't a specific "tall" size.

    Thanks for great videos. I've purchased some clothings(Buff's merino wool, Patagonia's puff jacket) thanks to your review and am happy with it everytime I travel. Now I'm looking for a merino wool hoodie as a mid-layer or a versatile outer. Could you add a review on the hoodies on this great guide? I'm considering the Icebreaker's shifter L/S hoodie and many others as a mid-layer or versatile outer, but not sure I'm on the right track.

    Hi ! I like your videos very much. I mostly interesting in the odor control the merino wool has to offer. I heard that now polyester-made clothes has technology called polygiene which companies like Patagonia uses it.
    Have you tried it ? If it's working as advertised, you also get all the benefits of polyester clothes as cheap price, durability, fast drying & now odor control...

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  4 года назад +1

      Hey Roy - we're glad you're digging the videos! We haven't had much experience with this material compared to Merino wool, but we're currently testing out the Patagonia R1 Fleece Full-Zip Hoody which has some odor control, so we'll keep you updated as we continue to test this material out. packhacker.com/travel-gear/patagonia/r1-fleece-full-zip-hoody/ 😊

      @roygertel 4 года назад +1

      @@PackHacker Thanks ! The clothes that people consider important for odor control are not Fleece.
      The most important clothes are shirts, underwear & socks, so you should consider test side by side those clothes with different approaches regarding odor control (marino wool vs polygiene).

      The problem is that plastic clothing lasts forever and will never biodegrade. If you do buy plastic clothes buy the best and pass it on to the next generation.

    Curious about your experience in very hot weather with Merino, after you get inside. Does it "stay wet" longer than other fabrics, making you clammy once you're no longer out in the heat?

    • @tomsitzman3952
      @tomsitzman3952 Год назад

      Morino wool can absorb 30 % by weight in water and feels damp , not saturated like cotton would feel. and still retains 80% of its insulation value. Wool vaporizes the moisture on your body and removes it to the surface where it evaporates, cooling in the summer.

    Ridge merino or unbound?

  • @tomsitzman3952
    @tomsitzman3952 Год назад

    I wash mine in the sink or small dish pan sized container or you can wear wool garments in the shower. Soap them up just like you do your body and rinse. Squeeze the water out. Never wring the water out. You may felt the garment. After squeezing as much water out as possible. Lay the garment flat on a towel, roll and squeeze. The garment will be slightly damp and wear able. After about 15 minutes the garment will be dry from your body heat. If you give your wool garment a lanolin soaking, it will absorb and hold less moisture and will dry quicker and feel softer. I wear merino year around and I'm wear a long sleeve Tee as I type. The long-sleeved shirts are good UV protection. Morino being a natural has a temperature range which poly fibers do not have. They are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I am a lifelong wearer of wool and have all weight for different situations. In the summer a wool shirt is my Defacto raincoat.

      I picked up 7 merino unisex long sleeve Tee at Costco for $8 USD each. A few years ago on a very hot humid summer day I bought a brand new Pendelton Mills felted wool Pea coat style coat for $5 USD. There are bargain finds to be found. A store clerk once told me that it is amazing how people will pass up quality clothing on sale in favor of poorly constructed inferior clothing at a store sale, both sold at the same price.
