In line with the topic, if anyone is interested: there is actually a German band called Samsas Traum. The band name itself is inspired by Kafka's work 'The Metamorphosis,' and you can also see beetles in their merchandise. The albums vary widely in terms of genre but can certainly be classified within various metal genres.

@alldertand A beetle (specifically a dung beetle) is a good guess, but it is only a guess -- Kafka doesn't specify. The usual interpretation is cockroach.

      @VladimirPoliacek Месяц назад +12

@@fjxenikxx So you got the most obvious ones? I would say that there are also references to his life itself, not only books. The song is made in similar way as a movie Kafka (1991). I like it a lot. Its a mesh of his books and his life too.
"One appeared in front of a jury" is the reference to The Trial book
"Anquish in an envelope of bliss" could be the reference to his Letter to my father, which I didnt read actually
"Whom to wake up in the morning. A Gregor or Josef will it be?" Is reference to The metamorphosis (main Character is Gregor Samsa) and The Trial (main character is Josef K.)
"Neglected and abused" was Gregor Samsa
      "Wrongfully accused" was Josef K.
"Or eventually plague will catch me?" is reference to his cause of death - tuberculosis
"You came into the world unloved" should be reference to his complicated relationship with his father, who obviously hated him
"Absurd of my existence" (and also other lines like not everything has a purpose or nothing happens for a reason) should be a reference to his writing in general, because he wrote existential stories
"I showed my bare face, it was ripped off like a mast" is a reference to his most well known quote "I was ashamed of myself when I realized life was a costume party; and I attended with my real face."
"Laugh! Without interruption to cough blood" is reference to his death because of tuberculosis

Another excellent song from Jinjer. All four members of this band are absolutely incredible and together they make some of the best music I’ve heard in quite a long time. I’ve been listening to rock ‘n’ roll/metal since 1974, as far back as I can remember and it’s been quite a few years since a band has captured my attention like Jinjer has. WHOW.... what a songwriting!!!! ... every instrument, note and word fits in those harmonys and with the singing and lyrics the song itself is "whole" ... like a classic novel of the writer... @@maxreach Wallflowers is their best album. Just a skill issue if you can't get into it and therefore think it to be same, boring. Songs are different, nuanced, sometimes complicated - but still all beautiful and melodic. Simple grooves from Macro and earlier are gone, but Jinjer has more to offer instead. I still, more than 3 years later, listen to this album and songs from it very often, beacuse they just don't get old. Wallflowers easily outlives all their previous stuff, as much as I love Macro. So I really look forward to the new record - seems very promising. I don't even mind getting Wallflowers 2 because of how good it is.
Tho I can easily see Jinjer becoming more and more niche due to this path, but I'm good with that. And band, I assume, too. They told in interviews how tired they are of people asking for new KoE and made a point that it won't happen.

It feels like jinjer is one of the only bands right now developing in a pure way, constantly refining their sound for themselves, and not just coming out with completely different music for mass appeal with that artificial hugeness that everyone is doing recently. every area of the music is just getting better, and tatiana's lyrics are genuinely haunting, she really knows how to dig deep for poetry. I'm a *giant* Jinjer fan, and moderately well-read (having studied philosophy in university) but unfamiliar with Kafka's work. So, I asked AI to interpret the lyrics.
    Here's the answer:
Jinjer's "Kafka" is a richly layered song steeped in existential angst, likely inspired by the works of Franz Kafka and his exploration of absurdity, alienation, and the human condition. The lyrics delve into themes of identity, struggle, and the chaotic randomness of life, blending Kafkaesque motifs with the band's poetic intensity. Here's an interpretation of the lyrics:
    Existence as Absurd and Painful
The recurring theme of absurdity reflects the philosophical stance that life lacks inherent meaning, a hallmark of Kafka's work and existential thought. Lines like:
"Absurd of my existence / I'm aching through persistence"
capture the struggle of finding purpose in a seemingly indifferent or nonsensical world. The speaker experiences the pain of existence but persists, even when meaning and structure are elusive.
    Identity and Transformation
The mention of "Gregor" likely references Gregor Samsa from Kafka's The Metamorphosis, a character who wakes up transformed into a monstrous insect. "Josey" may symbolize another facet of identity, perhaps a contrasting one. The question:
"Whom to wake up in the morning? A Gregor or a Josey will it be?"
suggests a fluid, fragmented sense of self, reflecting the disconnection and alienation central to Kafka's themes. The speaker feels like an outsider, caught between various identities imposed by society and self-perception.
    Art as Catharsis and Sacrifice
The recurring imagery of ink and writing ties to Kafka's identity as a writer and his struggles with expressing truth in a world that distorts and judges it. Lines like:
"The void will bleed with ink"
suggest that creativity and self-expression are both painful and liberating, with art becoming a means to fill the existential void, even if it comes at a personal cost. The pen becomes a tool of both creation and destruction:
"The pen will slid the heart, the pen will slid the heart."
    Alienation and Defiance
The lyrics also highlight societal rejection:
"I showed my bare face it was ripped off like a mask / As they stapped upon a throat of my own song."
The speaker's vulnerability is met with hostility, reflecting Kafka's exploration of being crushed by impersonal and oppressive systems. Yet, there’s a paradoxical acceptance and resilience in lines like:
"The world has shut me down but it's more than just fine."
This defiance echoes existentialist ideas of embracing absurdity without succumbing to despair.
    Themes of Suffering and Mortality
The imagery of coughing blood and the references to disease evoke Kafka’s battle with tuberculosis and the fragile nature of human life:
"Laugh! Without interruption to cough blood."
Even in suffering, there's a grim humor-acknowledging the absurdity of the human condition.
Conclusion: A Journey Through Alienation and Art
Jinjer’s "Kafka" is an ode to alienation and existential struggle, portraying the human condition as a blend of anguish, fleeting bliss, and the relentless pursuit of meaning. The song grapples with the absurdity of life while finding solace, however fleeting, in art and expression. It’s a profound reflection of Kafkaesque themes, delivered with the band’s raw, poetic intensity.

My 2nd question was, "You mentioned Kafka's "The Metamorphosis". Which other Kafka writings are likely referenced here, and how do the themes of the various writings inter-relate?"
      Answer:
The lyrics of "Kafka" resonate with several themes and motifs from Franz Kafka’s broader body of work, beyond The Metamorphosis. Here's an exploration of potential references and how these themes interconnect:
      "The Trial" (Der Prozess)
One of Kafka’s most famous novels, The Trial, centers on Josef K., a man arrested and prosecuted by a mysterious and inaccessible court for a crime he is unaware of. The lyrics echo this sense of bewildering judgment:
"One appeared in front of the jury / Face uncovered against the wind"
This suggests the speaker’s vulnerability and exposure to judgment, likely unfair or incomprehensible, much like Josef K.’s plight. The broader theme is the individual's futile struggle against opaque systems of power-whether societal, bureaucratic, or existential.
Interconnection: Both The Trial and the song highlight the alienation and absurdity of trying to navigate a world where justice, meaning, and purpose are elusive.
      "A Hunger Artist" (Ein Hungerkünstler)
This short story explores the life of a professional fasting artist, whose art is misunderstood and ultimately irrelevant to society. The lyrics:
"I showed my bare face it was ripped off like a mask / As they stepped upon a throat of my own song"
parallel the Hunger Artist’s experience of creating something deeply personal, only to be dismissed or scorned. The artist’s alienation and ultimate demise reflect Kafka’s own concerns about the role of the individual and their creations in an indifferent world.
Interconnection: The idea of artistic expression as both a source of pain and transcendence ties this story to the song’s exploration of ink, the pen, and bleeding creativity into existence.
      "The Castle" (Das Schloss)
In The Castle, Kafka depicts a protagonist, K., attempting to gain access to a castle and its authorities, only to be met with endless bureaucratic obstacles and confusion. The themes of exclusion and futility appear in the lyrics:
"In exclusion I cement myself alas!"
This line captures the isolation and frustration of being unable to connect with or penetrate the barriers of societal acceptance or understanding.
Interconnection: Like The Castle, the song speaks to the paradox of seeking meaning or connection in a world that resists clarity, where attempts to find purpose or belonging only deepen alienation.
"Before the Law" (Vor dem Gesetz)
A parable from The Trial, this story tells of a man seeking entry to the law, only to be blocked by a gatekeeper. The man spends his life waiting, never realizing the law was meant for him all along. The existential dilemma of whether to act, submit, or rebel is mirrored in the song:
"Not everything has a purpose, nothing happens for a reason"
This echoes the parable's theme of the unattainability of ultimate truth or justice and the futility of trying to assign meaning to every experience.
Interconnection: The story and the lyrics both confront the absurdity of existence and the tension between striving for meaning and accepting its absence.
Common Threads in Kafka’s Works and the Song
Alienation and Isolation: Whether through Gregor’s physical transformation, Josef K.’s unjust trial, or the Hunger Artist’s misunderstood craft, Kafka’s protagonists are isolated, much like the speaker in "Kafka".
Absurdity and Meaninglessness: Both the lyrics and Kafka’s writings delve into the absurdity of human existence, challenging notions of purpose or reason in life’s randomness.
Struggle Against Authority or Systems: Kafka’s works frequently depict oppressive systems (bureaucracy, law, society) that individuals cannot navigate or overcome, reflected in the song’s themes of judgment and exclusion.
The Role of Art and Expression: For Kafka, writing was both a personal struggle and a means of existence. Similarly, the song portrays art (symbolized by ink and the pen) as a double-edged sword-liberating yet painful, bleeding yet filling the void.
      How the Themes Inter-relate
Kafka’s writings and the song emphasize the tension between the desire for meaning and the recognition of life’s absurdity. The alienation of the individual, the impenetrable nature of systems and truth, and the redemptive yet agonizing power of creation are recurring motifs. Together, they form a tapestry of existential struggle, depicting life as a constant negotiation between despair and defiance-a sentiment Jinjer masterfully channels into "Kafka."
