What I think people mean about the bosses being hard is that it's a huge difficulty spike between normal battles and the bosses. I think this is a jrpg for those that don't like complex jrpg mechanics. For hardcore rpg players, like me, it got too simple too quick. By chapter 3 I'd already found 3 big exploits in the mechanics that let me breeze past most bosses and found quick ways to max out jobs. With no crafting system requiring me to beat monsters for items, it led to a cycle of just running past every battle, beating the boss to get a new job, then going back to my fav grind spot to max out that job and repeat. I'm not crapping on the game here, it's a solid game, I just don't think it was meant for a player like me, that likes meaty RPGs that I can sink 100+ hours into grinding, finding rare loot and drops, doing long side quests etc.

Music is overall way more recognizable in Bravely and even if the Design isnt everyones thing, Octopaths character design is just Pixel...you don't even see how the characters sould suppost to look like... I know do to the Design of Octopath it sold much more copys than bravely...which is sad...but I think bravely is objectively the better and more fleshed out game.
Grinding IS bad design if it's required. And no excuse for a 30 year old plot if it's not elevated. As for skits, I don't know what they're like here, but in Tales I quite like them. Yeah, moreso in more recent ones that are a little more animated. The thing with doing them in game is they're often about stuff that wouldn't really fit into the story itself and they're also skippable if you don't want to watch them. It's more character stuff and that's good imo.
In the skits for BD2 the characters move, but I just don't like this style of side-storytelling. It just feels lazy. And like you said, thank God they can be skipped and are totally optional. I just feel like they never add anything worth the time to sit and read through them.
@@TheGamingShelf Different strokes. Like I said, haven't played this game so I don't know what they're like here, I just generally like them in Tales. Sometimes important stuff is relegated to them there and I do think they should have been done in game, and sometimes there are a but too many and seem like fluff, but there's a lot of good ones in Tales too and I'm fine with their presentation. Great review.
@@KnightRaymund I HATE the skits in Berseria. They are endless and completely destroy all pacing. I swear some go on for 10+ minutes only to be followed up by another 2-3 skits. BD2 skits are short and fun and usually just some thoughts after a side quest or during the story that help flesh out the characters likes/dislikes, personalities, past etc. they're pretty good.
I know I haven't beaten the game yet while I'm sure you have, but while the style of the story's _presentation_ isn't massively cinematic outside of a few cutscenes, I hardly find the story itself to be as generic as you say personally. I see a lot of reviews saying the same thing about how generic it is but I just don't see it. I found fun plot twists, characters that subverted my expectations, an increasingly dark and bloody plotline, and a creeping horrifying suspicion as I've progressed though the game that doesn't feel _that_ cookiecutter to me. It's no Xenoblade level masterpiece by far mind you, or a deep character and political drama like Fire Emblem Three Houses, but I would hesitate to trash the game on it's story. It certainly _starts_ incredibly generic, I will give you that, and perhaps it ends that way as I haven't made it there yet to see, but the middle has been anything but to me.
I want to like this game, but judging by the demo I've played, I can't break this feeling that I'll just get bored by the main game compared to the first 2. It just felt like the overall quality in Bravely Default and Second were much higher. Not to mention that choosing Clay Tech Works over Silicon Knight for character design just felt like an asinine move to me, among other art direction mistakes.
I always feel weird about counting re-releases or remasters. To me xenoblade will always be a wii game (the best game on wii imo). I do have the remaster though and yes its very good but similar to how I consider mario kart 8 a wii u game (not a switch title) and the upcoming skyward remaster I still will consider a wii title too so I don't count them when ranking favorites. Thats just me though :)
As for me, BDII is not the best JRPG I played on Switch. However, it has the best turned based combat and grinding system like the previous entry. The best JRPG on Switch is Xenoblade Chronicles 1 Definitive Edition. Main stories are what makes JRPG great. The story in BDII is too simple. Only the 4 individual town stories were great. The overall plot is the same old thing. All 3 BD series has 4 crystals and a predictable evil fairy trying to spawn the final boss. Loved the first game but they didn't have to repeat the story plot. We need Bravely Default game to do more in the story.
I don't have enough money at this time to buy the game, so im re-playing the first one (because i did not complete the game yet) and playing the final demo of BD2, and tbh just the demo is already better than BD1 and BS
A fantastic RPG with lots of elements of battle. The storyline is good enough, however cliche it may be (though it gets difficult to memorize all the names). Though I will say this, if you’re not a fan of grinding, DON’T get this game.
I played on hard and I was disappointed by its difficulty. Despite being significantly under leveled the entire game, nothing really gave me a challenge except for the final boss. I felt like they really toned down the difficulty from what it was in Bravely Second.
@@TheGamingShelf For dungeons I had one character with Dual Wield, Raw Power, Full Force, Counter Savvy, and Beast Whisperer and I just killed everything with 3 level slashes and one crescent moon. For boss battles Seth was a Beastmaster and either a bard or a ranger. Beastmaster's tier 2 skill gives you a ton of stats for having a lot of monsters and off the leash/off the chain gives you a wide range of options. Gloria was a Shieldmaster and White Mage. With 2 Blessings equipped her healing is decent, and with Better than Ever she can heal far above her max health and be very hard to kill. I also gave her Revenge so she would always have a lot of brave points after getting attacked a lot. Elvis was a Spiritmaster and White Mage. By keeping his BP low he constantly cures status ailments and restores everyone's HP and MP and if necessary he can help Gloria with healing, resurrection or use Devotion to give anyone MP. Adelle was a monk for most of the game and I used her to build up BP and do Firebird to make an enemy weak to fire and then Flames of War to deal lots of damage. Eventually I made her a Hellblade.
There are actually quite a few Square-Enix games on Switch. Like every modern mainline non-MMO Final Fantasy aside from 13. Or every Tokyo RPG Factory game. Or everything from Team Asano, which has another rpg in the works as we speak.
Funny while some like that game others totally destroy it. Even the popular german game show Game Two couldn't give a really positive recommendation, except for the boss fights and for lovers of classic JRPGs. I doubt that this game have a chance against Cold Steel 3, Dragon Quest 11, XC2 and XC1 DE (basically against nearly every JRPG on Switch).
Im really interested in playing because i have never played a jrpg with so many jobs but it doesnt feel like its worth a full price. I'll wait for christmas sales this year.
Shame about the story. Default 1 was great until near the end and had just the right amount of jobs. Bravely Second kind of ruined it for me by adding too many jobs and changing the music. Maybe I just prefer job systems in tactics game more? Thanks for the review.
BD1 was nearly perfect, outside of the loop at the end. Thanks for watching the video! Speaking of tactical RPGs, are you excited for Triangle Strategy?

Elvis was a Spiritmaster and White Mage. By keeping his BP low he constantly cures status ailments and restores everyone's HP and MP and if necessary he can help Gloria with healing, resurrection or use Devotion to give anyone MP.
Adelle was a monk for most of the game and I used her to build up BP and do Firebird to make an enemy weak to fire and then Flames of War to deal lots of damage. Eventually I made her a Hellblade.
You can get the gambler asterisk in bnd
True! Kind of a weird class with how risky all the moves are.
Amazing game. If only Square Enix would support more games for Switch.
There are actually quite a few Square-Enix games on Switch. Like every modern mainline non-MMO Final Fantasy aside from 13. Or every Tokyo RPG Factory game. Or everything from Team Asano, which has another rpg in the works as we speak.
@@badlatency9979 compared to Gamecube and Wii their support so far had been trash! Octopath and BD II was great though
Trying to judge anything against masterpieces like Xenoblade is just unfair.
@@badlatency9979 I did not choose the video title :P
Im really interested in playing because i have never played a jrpg with so many jobs but it doesnt feel like its worth a full price. I'll wait for christmas sales this year.
Hey do what you gotta do! It’s your cash. Definitely worth a play though if you like classic style JRPGs.
Amazing game!! I love it!
Nice! What’s been your favorite classes?
@@TheGamingShelf Spiritmaster, Monk, Ranger, Berserker, Red Mage, Phantom, White Mage, Swordmaster
First.....I think 😂 Happy you got the review out Looking forward to playing this 🙌
I actually beat you ;) I hope you have fun once you start playing!
@@TheGamingShelf I'm starving for a tactics game! I just hope they fix the voice acting or just let me disable it. Only time will tell.
I tried to get into it but I can’t get into turn -base jrpg. Should have been action combat.
What are some of your favorite action RPGs?
@@TheGamingShelf tales of series, ys series, Nier , kingdom hearts and the final fantasy games ( 7 and 15)
Btw the last turn base jrpg I sit down and completed was final fantasy xiii and Resonance of Fate, I tried replaying resonance of fate again and couldn’t get into it. And all the jrpg I have are all action jrpg.
Great combat and a very enjoyable game. Shame the story and characters are a bit of a letdown.
Is this better than Octopath Traveller
Watch the whole video and I tell you specifically ;)
i've mentioned this before but this is my least favorite Bravely game but overall still a solid enough RPG just not something i'll ever go back to, rather play BD1 or BS
What didn’t you like about 2?
@@TheGamingShelf simple down to basic story meh charcaters besides alvis and adelle, that fact that almost every boss has a counter/ recovers BP as a result
Best jrpg? Its just... decent
It's say it's better than decent, but yes certainly not the best.
Algorithm comment ! Great review !
I just finished it
great game but felt so short
Really? Interesting. How long did it take you to finish?
All I could think of while playing this game was how I'd rather play Octopath Traveler again.
I certainly liked Octopath more as well, but I still enjoyed this quite a bit.
@@TheGamingShelf I couldn't get into it at all, the combat really wasn't doing it for me.
