Using Brave/Default is unironically not the best strategy, the best strategy is farming speed buns and stacking that stat as high as possible, and then just running circles around the enemies regardless of BP. This also makes slow jobs dead in the water. Speed rules all, don't even EQUIP things on your characters if it means their weight will detract from their Speed.
Also boss design is kind of really bad, bosses become an exercise in trying everything until you find something that they DON'T have a broken counter to. And seemingly every boss is a DPS check by making them just be able to heal in some way, so if you don't do enough damage you are going to get sandbagged to death slowly but surely, assuming you can get past the myriad of counters every boss has.
@@miniandrewmini1 it's not really part of the gameplay mechanics, but the presentation. And I thought that the cutscenes were a product of the 3DS' limited graphical capabilities, which is why I tolerated them in BD 1 and Second
As a long time Nintendolife viewer, I feel like the disconnect between the review writers and personalities (Zion, Alex, John) is becoming more apparent. There’s nothing wrong with having writers but when there’s a bigger emphasis on the personalities in non-review videos, it’s harder to understand John, Alex, and Zion’s preferences or opinions because they’re never given in the actual reviews.
Occasionally I've seen Alex write his own reviews, and I've also seen Alex add his own personal thoughts on the end of reviews that he didn't write. (I haven't seen enough reviews by Zion or Jon yet to know how they handle these things.) I like how Alex adds his personal thoughts and such, and I hope/encourage Zion or Jon to do it too so we can see their opinions as well!
Its a case of professionalism. Just because they didn't write the review doesn't mean they don't have opinions of their own. They could talk about it later on in another video or on their own down time. Their just more engaging speakers cause that's what their good at. I tend to tune out a really well written review if the speaker sounds wooden or blatantly reading from a script, so to have a colorful set of personalities to take on the task of expressing what the reviewer thought is greatly appreciated.
I have no idea why the person who wrote it can’t be the person that talks into a microphone for 10 minutes lmao what a worthless job. What do you do for a living “I read video game reviews that I didn’t write for youtube” I say this out of pure envy. I just want to get paid a more than living wage for doing so little.
@@royastro2513 maybe playing the game and writing the review was already a large task and by giving the role of recording and editing a video to someone else it makes the overall workflow more efficient and less overwhelming. Plus the person who wrote it might be a good writer and well versed in jrpgs but not overly great at presenting. It's a pretty simple concept that's been applied to a ton of youtube videos. There's generally more going on behind the scenes than the viewer is aware of.
I can’t tell you how much I’ve wanted a game to scratch my Final Fantasy 5 itch. I’m glad they embodied the feeling of a classic JRPG in a modern package.
I like this, but is still miss that sweet spot final fantasy had with grandiose/experimental and traditional. You have to be either/or today at square enix...which isnt what a lot of us prefer
Pretty sure most people who've played the first two games, already understand what they're getting into, for the most part. I dare say, this series is for the fans of classic JRPGs, especially those of the old Final Fantasies, and will enjoy it as that. Bravely Default has it's targeted audience it's catering to, and anyone who's expecting it to be something entirely different; well that's honestly on them. If isn't broken, don't fix it; if anything fine tune it and possibly expand it. I'm enjoying this game greatly, and would think anyone who loves turned-based RPGs will enjoy this game as well.
I’ve heard people say they don’t like the chibi like characters. This has been a common staple in many games outside the RPG genre. How the game plays is what I’m more concerned with. I like my RPG’s simple. As long as my time is respected and I can find that good grinding spot to level up so I can prepare myself properly. I love how you can increase the speed!!! And it’s not even a remaster or remake. Other games need to take heed! I can’t wait to start this game. I’m already going to love it!
From what was in the review I would think that the fleshed out job system is quite a unique hook at least these days. I don't really understand what else the hook could be. 🤷
Honestly I don’t mind the art style but to be honest last jrpg I played was HD remaster ff9 so it feels nice to play something that has better graphics. I’m really loving the job system and character interaction
"Yo IGN, you giving this an 8 or 9? Just asking, because we could go either way." "Oh, hey Nintendo Life! Yeah we're going with an 8. Screw it. We used up all our 9's this month." "Great. Thanks IGN. We will go with 8 then." And so it goes. By the way, Nintendo Life, what exactly is this mystical "X" factor that Square Enix could have supposedly put into this game to make it receive a score closer to Octopath Traveler, which if you recall recieved a 9.3 but was also told that it was a missed opportunity by Square Enix? You say the story is not anything spectacular, but you also said that a spectacular story was what was missing from Octopath Traveler. However, you also said that you liked how Octopath Traveler had a more down to earth story than something like Final Fantasy, and I agree. You say that this game has a high fantasy story that doesn't disappoint, but you also say its missing something. So is it just a so so story then? Be more specific in your review. You can do that without spoiling anything. You spent alot of time on this review, and it shows, but it is still lacking, because I still have important questions that haven't been answered. I want to know more, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Why is Octopath Traveler a 9.3, while this is an 8.0? In this age of gaming, and with this genre, the difference between those two numbers is huge, and could make a difference of potentially millions of dollars in revenue for Square Enix and Nintendo, not to mention affect a lot of gamers' lives.
@@alocalgamer3464 ikr this guy just made a 5 paragraph essay over a number (btw i’m not saying their point is wrong or anything, it’s a fair opinion to have but bro chill outtttt)
@@alocalgamer3464 I was just gonna say this. I really prefer the opinion, followed by a nice summary. And maybe a "loved it, liked it, loathed it" type of verdict.
IMO Octopath has much more appealing art, also idk about the soundtrack of this game but again octopath music is phenomenal. besides that about the combat he said there was a random element and for me its a let down, in octopath there would be a mix of allies and enemy turns but you could see who goes next and affect the order! that was one of strategic ways you could affect the battle. Besides that, perhaps theres more grinding here, side stories arent good at any of the games but maybe here more, and theres general ui which again I just loved in octopath traveler, anyway im glad they give an honest opinion, and they might share some of my reasons.
Unfortunately it's hard to acquire that "X" factor and innovation to change up how this is made. Because it was such a high demand for the classic style JRPG. With too much, you risk loosing what makes it classic and going in the direction the mainline FF games did. While I would like to see a break away from the Crystal storyline, I understand that it's THE staple for their FF series. And the subplots are plenty to keep me invested. With an AFK element to gather items and little mini games like a Triple Triad feature, this game I think is a fantastic addition to anyones collection who appreciates the old school feel of turn based rpg's.
Nothing more satisfying than braving 4 times then use godspeed strike 3 times dealing 99.999 damage per strike and one turn to use a strike that can get mp back based on the damage dealt.
I like the review. It’s been very fair. One thing I think you should’ve mentioned is the God-Tier soundtrack. Probably one of the best in video game history.
@@mzxa9988 I agree, the character design is much better on the 3ds. So excited to buy this before, but after seing this review, might not buy it anymore.
Seriously can't wait for tomorrow, played dragon quest xi but felt way too easy (20 hrs in and had 2 party members die once) BD2 demo constantly felt challenging
There are the Draconian Options you can select for more of a challenge. No fleeing, No Armor, No shopping, Reduced Xp, Stronger enemies, and one that makes Hero cursed making him just having a turn RNG based.
With the Draconian options on? I played it on normal mode first and i have to admit that it can be easy sometimes but on draconian mode its really punishing. Some people call normal mode as easy mode
It's still very challenging on even Normal difficulty, been playing the full game for a few days now and it's a breath of fresh air compared to DQ11 and all the other easy as hell JRPGs lately (I love DQ11 don't get me wrong)
Near the end, it seems really bizarre to make a point of stating that this game is only meant for people interested in the type of game that it is. Can not the same be said of any game??? The remark "Those of you who appreciated the level of complexity and pacing in early 90's JRPGs will find a ton to love here, while those of you looking for innovation and thrilling new ideas will be left wanting," seems pretty odd. Bravely Default hasn't really pitched itself as something other than a classic JRPG style game with slight alteration to the formula so as to remain appealing to those wanting that gameplay experience. It'd be like if someone remarked how Halo Combat Evolved is really just for someone wanting to play an FPS. A person would rightly respond "Yeah. That's the point."
@@stoppogklokke That still doesn't address the oddity of saying 'if you don't like this game's genre, then this game isn't for you' as that statement can be applied to literally every piece of entertainment ever created

@@BonnMalbert, octo is more challenging IMO. Has way more grinding and doesn’t give you much direction. BD2 flows a lot better and gives you that classic JRPG experience. The job system is fun and rewarding to master and the graphics and soundtrack are solid. I have been having a lot of fun with BD2 so far.
The chibi style pushes me away from the game... and i HATE rpgs with melee characters striking the air in front of them instead of approaching the enemy in combat
Its exactly what the doctor ordered, I am loving it. Big fat smile on my face while playing this all the time, Hard to put it down. I only got it 2 days ago and im 13 hours into it. Great stuff. Decent challenge too!
7:00 a miss conception about the battle system. Bravely Default and Bravely Second let me choose all actions for a turn and then the order of the turn is set by characters speed + random variable (+/- 20 as I remember). I helped me to organize characters in a order to better fit the strategy and check what everyone can do before doing it. It was never a full turn of mine than a full turn of enemies. Second, I could play the game single handed. I could set everything only with my left hand, with great speed. It was simple to set Default by pressing "L" AND confirming it at the end of battle preparation. Bravely Default II has no mercy if I press Default by mistake (no "Are you sure?" before continuing). Actually a single column menu enabled this single handed feature, with a two columns menu, it needs a button to enter menus. The first demo was even worse with no indication of turn order or buffs and debuffs in play. This whole system in Bravely Deafult and Bravely Second was the best I have ever met. The main difference is that actions matter to decide when you can act again, but it doesn't seem to be quite clear the rules, the kind of thing that only playing it continuously may help the player to understand and master it.
I played the demo i don't like how they talk to each other. It is a bit robotic and something about them not having eye contact when talking bothers me.
Wouldn't "Been there, done that" be a good description of the formula Nintendo has used on it's own extremely popular IP's for decades? Not that I disagree with the assessment but I see games like this often critiqued for not being innovative or fresh enough when it seems people don't always want older franchises changed too much.
Does this touch on Second's cliffhanger ending involving the Sword of the Brave being a "key" at all, or has that been abandoned, like everything else from the Luxendarc duo?
Given the description and the fact that I've played a ton of JRPGs, this should be the perfect intro. Not hard to get side tracked/lost and enough customization for you to master without feeling overwhelmed.
Does this game drop at midnight or whats up cause i need my BD 2. Does it just put the other titles on the back burner? Like do they get mentioned. Does anyone know?

This also makes slow jobs dead in the water. Speed rules all, don't even EQUIP things on your characters if it means their weight will detract from their Speed.
Also boss design is kind of really bad, bosses become an exercise in trying everything until you find something that they DON'T have a broken counter to. And seemingly every boss is a DPS check by making them just be able to heal in some way, so if you don't do enough damage you are going to get sandbagged to death slowly but surely, assuming you can get past the myriad of counters every boss has.
I wish they drop the visual novel style cutscenes someday. I'd much rather see the characters interact in their actual environment.
I liked the tent conversations in Second really helped the characters connect
That's part of the bravely default series though. Why change part of the mechanics?
@@miniandrewmini1 it's not really part of the gameplay mechanics, but the presentation. And I thought that the cutscenes were a product of the 3DS' limited graphical capabilities, which is why I tolerated them in BD 1 and Second
@@eddiezuniga1268 sure, but for everything else, I wish they'd be interacting in the actual environment instead of against a 2D plane
"Let it rip like a Bayblade." Nice.
"running back and forth on the same spot"
Lol im ready for this XD BD trained me to do shit repeatedly already.
I get to play as Elvis, what more can i ask for
As a long time Nintendolife viewer, I feel like the disconnect between the review writers and personalities (Zion, Alex, John) is becoming more apparent. There’s nothing wrong with having writers but when there’s a bigger emphasis on the personalities in non-review videos, it’s harder to understand John, Alex, and Zion’s preferences or opinions because they’re never given in the actual reviews.
Sometimes they give their own thoughts at the end of the reviews.
What do you do for a living
“I read video game reviews that I didn’t write for youtube”
I say this out of pure envy.
This is a good video to eat cereal to
Mama Mia what kind of cereal are you eating, Mario? I’m eating Doritos!!
I swear man every time I’m tryna eat they put a cancer commercial on with a deformed lady speaking like a robot and it ruins it
This is a Fruity Pebbles or Trix video for me.
Absolutely loved the 2 on the 3DS so I'm just waiting for Amazon to deliver the darn thing :)
I can’t tell you how much I’ve wanted a game to scratch my Final Fantasy 5 itch. I’m glad they embodied the feeling of a classic JRPG in a modern package.
All I want is crazy wtf plot twists and 4th wall breaks like before
Pre ordered this Really Looking Forward to it 🥰
I like this, but is still miss that sweet spot final fantasy had with grandiose/experimental and traditional. You have to be either/or today at square enix...which isnt what a lot of us prefer
I just wish the attacks and spells looked a little more grandiose and the characters eyes are terrifying to look at
@@BlackangelKatakuri good thoughts on the spells! I always remember final fantasy having great spectacles to observe
@@BlackangelKatakuri in what way are they terrifying? Im surprised you think that
Pretty sure most people who've played the first two games, already understand what they're getting into, for the most part.
Long-term defense builds do eat up many bosses as long as you use poison.
From what was in the review I would think that the fleshed out job system is quite a unique hook at least these days. I don't really understand what else the hook could be. 🤷
Well the job system is just the best, there's no satisfaction as leveling your jobs to the max and mixing some gamebreaking combos.
I Love Cute RPG Games like this, that's Why I Buy Nintendo Switch Yay 🙌🙌🙌
My biggest drawback for this game is the character design, it's very uncanny valley-y
You'll be missing out on a great game because of a petty reason.
@@guitarhero38633 I guess Ill have to get used to their style.
I do like the artworks, though
In this age of gaming, and with this genre, the difference between those two numbers is huge, and could make a difference of potentially millions of dollars in revenue for Square Enix and Nintendo, not to mention affect a lot of gamers' lives.
this is why we should not have review scores
@@alocalgamer3464 ikr this guy just made a 5 paragraph essay over a number
(btw i’m not saying their point is wrong or anything, it’s a fair opinion to have but bro chill outtttt)
@@alocalgamer3464 I was just gonna say this. I really prefer the opinion, followed by a nice summary. And maybe a "loved it, liked it, loathed it" type of verdict.
Why did you go on a rant
IMO Octopath has much more appealing art, also idk about the soundtrack of this game but again octopath music is phenomenal. besides that about the combat he said there was a random element and for me its a let down, in octopath there would be a mix of allies and enemy turns but you could see who goes next and affect the order! that was one of strategic ways you could affect the battle. Besides that, perhaps theres more grinding here, side stories arent good at any of the games but maybe here more, and theres general ui which again I just loved in octopath traveler, anyway im glad they give an honest opinion, and they might share some of my reasons.
I like that everyone doesn't move right after eachother.
Isn't dat tha point of it, its old skool style by default, this is what us old skool rpg guys need right now
Unfortunately it's hard to acquire that "X" factor and innovation to change up how this is made.
Its honestly so sad that people forget that Mitch wrote the actual review and not Zion.
starving children is sad.
Who cares? As if that matters lol
Mitch, is that you?
Get a grip on reality. It’s not ‘honestly so sad’ at all.
First world issues...
Sad!
Nothing more satisfying than braving 4 times then use godspeed strike 3 times dealing 99.999 damage per strike and one turn to use a strike that can get mp back based on the damage dealt.
I can't wait for this game! When it launchs? At least i can hold myself until triangle strategy the one that i can't wait for
ikr? cannot wait for tomorrow
Launches the 26th, which is tomorrow where I am.
@@Anonymous-ld7je so for you would it be the 27th? or still the 26th and it's just really late in the day
just curious :p
Love that this is turn base really haven't care for square games in years hope this goes back to 90s style story telling
Yeah I don't care about innovation this game looks amazing
Is there any end game stuff like secret bosses or an end game dungeon? New game +?
Eagerly awaiting my copy to arrive today. So excited!
Overworld and Battle graphics reminds me, in some way, of Blue Dragon. And I am fantastic with this.
Just pre ordered the physical release with poster, cards and stickers. It will be my first bravely default game and I'm excited and can't wait :).
Many people miss the fact that truff’s clothes are precisely the same its mob class wore in bd1
this game is such a blast i havent been able to put it down
I like the review. It’s been very fair. One thing I think you should’ve mentioned is the God-Tier soundtrack. Probably one of the best in video game history.
But is there a cameo by Alternis Dim
Or Ringabel!
This game looks great! Now I want to play it 😁
The attack animations are really off-putting, it looks like they're having a fit or something
That’s cause they’re sped up.
@@Jaekization even when they're not sped up, they still look like they're missing frames in my opinion. Just a bit jarring

That is Bravely Default.
It’s very retro Final Fantasy-styled.
One of my favorite turnbased battle systems (besides radiant historia). Might have to check it out.
Radiant Historia 🥰
I'll get this but i'm not looking forward to looking at the ugly creepy doll like character models. >__
Back in the PS1 days we all had to use our imagination.
@@jamesbrice3267 the thing is the 3ds bravely models looks miles better then the switch version
@@mzxa9988 I agree, the character design is much better on the 3ds. So excited to buy this before, but after seing this review, might not buy it anymore.
This model doesn't fit well for television.
Great review! I never played the first BD, but I might get this at some point thanks to your review :).
This one is definitely designed to be a new entry point to the series.
These kind of RPGs are kind of niche, so they appeal to a much narrower range of people.
@@stoppogklokke That still doesn't address the oddity of saying 'if you don't like this game's genre, then this game isn't for you' as that statement can be applied to literally every piece of entertainment ever created
The texture of the enemies tho
The little characters remind me of The Alliance Alive. But I think that game may have had more story to it.
Yes it is worth it!! The nostalgic feeling of grinding.. hunting the wiki wiki or whatever the name
I've had the game for a week now and I can say it's absolutely amazing and worth playing through. One of the best JRPG's I've played in a while and arguably even better than the other Bravely games.
have you played octopath? if so, how does BD2 compare to OT? i've recently just finished OT and it instantly became one of my favorite jrpgs of all time. OT just set the bar too high for me that i'm afraid i won't be able to enjoy any other jrpg
@@BonnMalbert, octo is more challenging IMO. Has way more grinding and doesn’t give you much direction. BD2 flows a lot better and gives you that classic JRPG experience. The job system is fun and rewarding to master and the graphics and soundtrack are solid. I have been having a lot of fun with BD2 so far.
its called "bravely default" and i keep seeing people talk about a lack of innovation lol.
If you want innovation go play final fantasy. This is for old school fans
They probably means its mechanics doesn't change that much compare to the previous title. Can't tell it's a pros or cons.
I’m excited for this. I’m ready for a classic style JRPG
Braverly Default 2, The Diofield Chronicle, Live A Live or Octopath Traveler
Is the song playing in this review from the last story?
I’m glad I’m not the only whose Elvis dies far too easily.
yes, totally unbalanced
I love RPG's that aren't auto-pilot on combat, like LOD so, I think this will be great :)
The chibi style pushes me away from the game... and i HATE rpgs with melee characters striking the air in front of them instead of approaching the enemy in combat
Those are the reasons as to why I skipped it
@@BlackangelKatakuri it is really fun. I really recommend it
Its exactly what the doctor ordered, I am loving it.
Ah yes, Nintendo life’s 8/10
What are you alluding to?
I agree becoming a bit predictable like ign reviews 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I played the demo i don't like how they talk to each other. It is a bit robotic and something about them not having eye contact when talking bothers me.
It bothers me too
Trying to decide if I should get this or just restart octopath since I never beat that.
Just ordered this game Black Friday for 26$. Seems like it’s worth the risk for that price, hope it’s fun !
Wouldn't "Been there, done that" be a good description of the formula Nintendo has used on it's own extremely popular IP's for decades? Not that I disagree with the assessment but I see games like this often critiqued for not being innovative or fresh enough when it seems people don't always want older franchises changed too much.
I loved this game, so many improvements over the first two games. Got bored with Octopath traveler, never beat that one.
Can’t wait to play it
i still wish they finished the orginoal story, i still am struggling too just move on
Does this touch on Second's cliffhanger ending involving the Sword of the Brave being a "key" at all, or has that been abandoned, like everything else from the Luxendarc duo?
How come my graphics on my switch don't look anything as good as this?
Is this game friendly to new players? I don’t have a whole lot of JRPG experience..
Given the description and the fact that I've played a ton of JRPGs, this should be the perfect intro. Not hard to get side tracked/lost and enough customization for you to master without feeling overwhelmed.
@@HornPlayer02 Awesome. I’m looking forward to checking it out. Thanks
