You know, I just watched Metallica playing Battery with Dave Lombardo on drums and it was great, but there's something about Lars (probably playing it with the band for over 34 years now) that just gels. It's like the rest of the band just kinda conforms to Lars' idiosyncrasies and it's magic.

Well, it was always Lars’s band to begin with, wasn’t it? He started it. He had the connections to get the right people for the band at the time they were “needed.” He’s an okay drummer, but also a good arranger and a great manager.

You see Kirk walks into a gig, night after night, knowing he has 15 really difficult pieces of guitar to play in front of 50'000 people, and if he even makes the smallest error it will go viral - and he doesn't give a shit. He's relaxed as fuck. That's what being a true professional is all about. All your RUclips guitarists can nail the solo if you give them a pressure free environment, and 2-3 takes to get it perfect, but they'd absolutely melt if they had to do it live, on tour, night after night.

It seems like Lars was very good back in the day at what he did but either peaked early and wore himself out or has had terrible technique his entire drumming career and just can't overcompensate with raw energy like he could when he was younger.

@@L0mb4x Why so triggered? Fact of the matter is (and stop using his age as an excuse), he is not nearly as good of a drummer as he was in the 80s & mid 90s. He began declining by 1996. He doesn't hardly practice, he can't keep basic time for the most part, and he also doesn't no how to count that well either.

I can't quite 100% agree with you on Kirk's solos. I mean, don't get me wrong, he's an amazing guitarist, and his solos on the records are fucking great! But since the band more often than not plays the songs, especially this one, super fast live, compared to the album version, Kirk seems to have trouble placing each individual note in there somewhere. I never noticed this when I saw them live, but on video, especially with today's recording quality, it's pretty hard to miss, imho.

I'm actually surprised, I think this is probably the best performance of Battery that I've seen Lars do in years. Not a whole lot of tempo change overall, you can mostly hear his kicks are a bit more in time, and on the whole it didn't feel like he was struggling too hard to keep it together. I dunno what he's doing different nowadays, but he needs to keep doing it. Of course, he's not the same drummer he was thirty years ago, but I think maybe he's finally realized that, and has decided to stop trying to be. It sounds good.

Lashing out the action, returning the reaction
Weak are ripped and torn away
Hypnotizing power, crushing all that cower
    Battery is here to stay

    Smashing through the boundaries
    Lunacy has found me
    Cannot stop the battery
    Pounding out aggression
    Turns into obsession
    Cannot kill the battery

He was bad in the early days of Metallica as well. The only difference is back then I can understand him drumming like an amateur, and at least he practiced and did improve until Black Album tour. But after that he stopped practicing and is sloppy. So I’ll give him credit from ‘83-‘93

I've had a lot of experiences in my life. I've been homeless, addicted to Heroin & crack cocaine, I've traveled the country, Ive been in Jail, I've gotten Laid & I've tripped on Acid. I've been in love, I've had my heart broken, I've experienced playing Live with multiple different bands on multiple different occasions. I've played guitar in Speed Metal bands, I've Sang in Death Metal bands' & I've Drummed with Jazz bands. I've experienced Awesome Heights, Happiness, & a small taste of success, & I've experienced Incredibly depressing broken Lows. I've been unemployed....And I've run My Own business...
    I've experienced 7 + years of sobriety & counting....
I've experienced every type of Musical genre Live, from the Late great albino Blues legend Johnny Winter to Extreme Egyptian Death Metalist NILE, As they literally ripped the floors, walls & guard rails off the 2nd floor of the Irvington Cricket Club, Right before the riot broke out.
The 7 Herniated Buldging Discs in my spine can attest to that night.
One experience Is STRONGER Than ALL That.
More Addicting than a $70 12 Bag Shot of Heroin after a 3 night stretch in jail....
More satisfying than your girl friend agreeing to marry you (B4 later betraying & forever shattering any hope of future trust in another human being)
Faster than a speeding bulling....LOUDER than a train.
The kind of Sound that you can actually FEEL. Every last BLAST Pounding one by one, through every layer of your Body
The lights go down....EVERYTHING GOES BLACK.
    everyone goes quiet
The Ecstacy of gold raises the hairs on the back of you neck filled with anticipation.....
    💥BOOM....

METALLICA IS HERE...James Hatfield is standing appropriately 4 & 1/2 feet away....A HEAVY METAL GOD 🙌
METALLICA HAS COMPLETELY CRUSHED THE PLACE. Like Only MetallicA can do...standing less than 5 feet in front of your face performing BATTERY🔥🔥
Left with somewhat if a cross between a Life Changing Religious Experience....& being sucked into both a Tornado & War on a Battlefield at the same time....
I have experienced this particular experience Exactly 22 times in 7 different states....& counting (Hopefully Europe next!)
