This so reminds me of the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, World". Who could forget the scene with Terry Thomas picking up the gang and making him go off the road wrecking the front end. "I hope you haven't damaged this machine....". LOL Anyway, very nice example. So many of these obviously gotten driven to death.

We had a similar WILLY's in our shop for a year or so, and the mayor of our town used to come over there after hours and drink with my step-dad. Mayor Al would get kinda drunk and start making crazy offers on that WILLY's. And Ralphie (step- dad) would turn him down, just for laughs. Thanks for jogging out a memory, Lou!

@mirchshake50 Very true man, my Dad had one back in the day. I still remember going on drives in the Station Wagon during my childhood. Sadly we had to sell it off. I still miss that Jeep though. Never got a chance to drive it as I was just a kid during that time, but those drives to the forest and the countryside were the most memorable drives of my life.

Also perfect for Safari or stuff like that. I remember in the Fifthies there was about the same looking Willys, however with wood doors. An historical piece indeed. Loved how he operated those gear shifts and stuff. I would be totally confused on all those shifters he had used. Pretty color and that engine is good and strong. Those flat head sixes were awesome. Nice restoration and loved that ride along. A very fun and knowledgeable and piece of automotive history! Thanks for sharing Lou!

This has to be one of my favourites that you have featured on your show, Lou. ! "Rev" has a great looking Jeep & I love the classic older look that those have, with plenty of chrome on the front. I noticed it has no radio either. Maybe in the different gear ranges you couldn't hear it anyway ! 4.88 gears- wow ! I know where 2 of these (in pick-up trk form) are setting a couple miles from each other ,both very restorable ! Thanks to rev, and to you Lou for the cool drive .!

Hi, Lou! The first Jeeps were introduced back in 1941 and Willys-Overland was among the companies that was given the opportunity to build them, which was a godsend for a company that had struggled mightily during the Depression. The Jeep itself was a godsend to our troops because they could travel over some difficult terrain they might not otherwise have been able to reach. After the war, to give them something different to sell, W-O decided to focus its attention on Jeeps and some new derivatives for both civilians and military, of which the Jeep Station Wagon was one. (The later Jeepster was another.) This was the vehicle that pioneered the all-steel station wagon, although they were initially all painted to look like a woodie, and ultimately led to the popularity of today's SUVs and crossovers. BTW, Terry-Thomas drove a 1955 Utility Wagon in one of my favorite films of all time, "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"(until a wheel that gets knocked out of alignment and goes wobbly causes him to veer off the road!).
Thanks for letting this one call to you. Think you and Rev got the hang of all those gear knobs yet? LOL!

That film is excellent comedy in which very great actors are playing excellently. Among them, in addition to Terry Thomas, Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Jerry Lewis (in a very small but very talentful role) and many other greatest actors were there. Stanley Kramer's film as I can remember. Indeed, it is one of the most favorite films of all times.

These vehicles and their truck version were used as 4x4 military tactical transport vehicles in most armed forces for many years and their usefulness and performances were excellent. Hi Lou, So today I revisited this video on the "55 Willys Wagon of mine. I'd like to confess a couple of things; AMC did not buy Kaiser until 1970 as Mark Chandler pointed out. 2. The engine had nothing to do with Hudson (also as Mark pointed out}. It was designed by Continental motors and used in Graham cars in the thirties which were supercharged! That's why they have so many head bolts. But that is only half the story. Mr. Kaiser was too cheap to buy engines from Continental so he skirted the copyright laws enough to produce the engine himself by his own company. The engine has 226.2 cubic inch displacement and 105 brake horsepower at 3600 RPM. with 190 ft. lb. max torque at 1400 RPM. 3. The reason I could not put the jeep into low range is because you also have to shift the transfer case into four wheel drive first. So yeah I need to do my research but I like work on the vehicles first and learn as I go along.
People are looking forward to a great show season, now that the plague is passing by, and we all look forward to many more excellent videos from you. Thanks Lou!

My Grandfather had a neighbor that had one of these sitting in the grass next to his house. I wish at 16, I should have asked about buying it. I think it was a 1953 with 4 wheel drive.

141st thumbs up… As usual I am at work and have to put this to the side… Definitely will check it out.
You are definitely popping up in my browser so I just wanted to let you know. Thumbs up now… Watching later.
Last night, I watched the 64 1/2 mustang… It gave me goosebumps that car was so amazing. I also liked One of the people who commented saying about the cobra engine not being original… Or at least the valve covers. To me, it didn’t matter. A stunning car. Talk to you later

@@loucostabile I already watch the video… I love the truck but it isn’t my cup of tea… The 1970 Plymouth is more my style… Oh one more thing… I let the Commercials play through… I didn’t watch them but I figured I’d let them play through instead of turning them off. Hope this helps… BTW the thumbs up aren’t a freebie… You deserve it… That’s why I litter your comments with thumbs up. See you on the next one… One more thing… We definitely are neighbors… Illinois resident… Let’s say near Westchester . My sneaking suspicion is a lot of your friends live in Burr Ridge Or Oakbrook because that’s where all the hot cars are around. I see them daily. Tootles

I wish I could remember what I wrote originally here before RUclips removed it. My comment here is limited in that I want to be sure there is nothing RUclips's algorithm cant target as objectionable. I can only surmise that maybe my word arrangements are taken out of context by a thought-incapable bot can misconstrue. I'll check back from time to time to see if its still here. The dreaded RUclips gremlins are mysterious buggers.
ANYWAYS - I do love this 55 Willy's Jeep! Quite an amazing story and machine!

The engine is NOT a Hudson engine. The L6-226 came to Willys with the merger with Kaiser-Frazer in 1953. Before that the engine was used in Kaiser, Frazer and Graham-Paige cars (originally pre-war a Graham engine designed to be supercharged hence the 33 head bolts rather then the typical 21 of most flathead sixes). Continental also produced this engine as a "Red Seal" industrial engine. A version was also used by Gray Marine.

Interesting design. Looks like a jeep of 1950s: very robust, definitely has more metal in it than nice looking modern cars. Would this car be more safe to drive than similar modern model, that has very little of metal in it?

This engine had nothing to do with Hudson. It was the same motor used in Kaiser’s and Frazers as Kaiser and Willys merged in 1954. AMC did not buy Kaiser Jeep until 1970. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!
