I'm honestly very surprised that you didn't pick up that Olrox is basically Dracula's foil in this show. Because when you think about it, nothing Dracula does in the prior series is done without extreme emotion. Unlike Dracula, Olrox has zero interest in taking revenge further than just the one who killed his lover. On top of that, Olrox decided to keep the memory of that deceased loved one alive by acting as they would have wanted him to for the most part. Dracula didn't do that at all.

We see him fighting only Julia solely because she was the one responsible for his grief.

Cuz the Abbot doesn't look like he has a CLUE about what he's doing other than "insert corpses, they will do what i tell them to" (except half of them DON"T) Also..let's remember he was STILl the sort of guy who happily slaughtered a city of town guards who VERY unsurprisingly didn't want him and his army of demons to "peacably" march through thier town. When Erzsebet says something like "gods should know where the dragons are", that's a bit of a dual function there. This shows that Olrox is notable enough for her to take notice of him, but not enough to get stuff about him completely right. This is likely referring to the form he took in the fight with Julia Belmont, which looks like a Quetzalcoatl, a feathered serpent deity in Aztec culture. Her calling him a dragon, while seemingly acknowledging his power, is actually dismissing an important part of his identity as an Aztec.

The contrast between the cold calculation and the emotional intelligence is so, so cool. He rarely lets himself be moved to even express his emotions in his features, but it's never unclear, at least to the audience, that he is feeling. With young Richter, probably more pity than he'd ever admit, likely even regret. With Mizrak, more love than he'd be willing to say. With Bathory, more rage than can even be hidden by long practice (fortunately she and her hype lady aren't great at noticing things outside their shared fantasy).

Olrox is such a complex character. Ultimately, he yearns for freedom and to live, hunt, and love as he chooses. Olrox doesn't care about enslaving or wiping out humanity or any of that nonsense. He remembers back when he was still human and how Western colonizers (Spanish conquistadors) conquered, enslaved, and massacred his own Aztec people. Olrox actually doesn't wish that fate on anyone else.
That's why he resents Erzsebet Bathory's hold over him and her insane plan to plunge the world into darkness and enslave mankind. Olrox hasn't yet arrived at the point where he'll fight on the side of Richter and his friends, but he's on that (hopefully eventual) path when he betrays Bathory by revealing the existence of her Infernal Forging Machine (and how to destroy it) to Richter.

I know they have their own monsters like the skin walkers or chupacabra and all that stuff. I’m hoping as the series goes on, that through Mizrak, he’ll understand how his actions condemned his loved one to death at Julia’s hands when it was preventable. It is possible for vampires to love mortals with an ephemeral lifespan. Doesn’t need immortality to love forever to a degree. He has the rational mind to understand, so I hope he does.

I think what drew Olrox to his love in America and to Mizrak is passion. By which I mean the passion those men have for something higher, beyond them. For his native american lover it was his passion for freedom, for change and progress. For Mizrak it is passion for his faith, for God. Two very different people, with different- at times opposing beliefs- but both burn with a pure and honest fire that Olrox- perhaps because he is a vampire who's lived long and thus finds difficulty feeling that passion himself- is drawn to.

The part where olrox is talking about the dawn is closely tied to his aztec background. The mexica were very advanced in this regard and based much of their daily life around their method of keeping time which is highly complex. He probably knows the exact moment the sun will come up just by looking up at the stars.

  • @kruaser123
    @kruaser123 10 месяцев назад +83

I'd like to add a little tid bit about the eclipse in regards to Orlox. He is referred to as the Aztec but generally when people say Aztec they are referring to the Mexica. For the Mexica they put a special emphasis on the current sun deity (there were a few different suns in their religion) Huitzilopochtli and had quite a few events where blood sacrifices were made in the hopes of keeping the sun lit. Nocturne implies that most deities are real to an extent and Orlox would know this. Perhaps his expression after seeing the eclipse of the sun wasn't just in shock of bathory's power but also some deep rooted cultural anxiety coming to the surface. I might be off the mark on this but I just like when series incorporate real life cultures into characters.

Probably the best of the new characters so far, I love Olrox, especially as a history nerd!! Machecoul, where most of Nocturne takes place, was the setting of a massacre in 1793 that sparked a royalist rebellion against the Revolutionary Government in Paris. Machecoul in the show was still untouched by (non-vampiric) violence in the beginning and the Abbot was only just starting to worry about being removed from his position. Therefore, we can make a decent educated guess that season one of Nocturne happened in the spring/summer between 1790 and 1792. Assuming that, in the show Olrox says he "spent 250 years" as a vampire, so he was turned in/around 1541 - 20 years after the destruction of the Aztec Empire - which, if you consider the fall of their capital to be the empire's end, occurred in 1521. Olrox looks like he's in his late 20s or early 30s. He was likely just a child when Cortes and his merry band arrived in 1519 to start their conquest. It makes sense why he doesn't jive with Erzabet's plans of conquest - besides her just being obviously crazy, Olrox has seen conquest before firsthand, and isn't a fan.

Getting some *heavy* Tywin Lannister vibes from Orlox, in the best way possible - how he doesn't allow himself to be pushed around but rather works around the ploys of others; there's a snake-ish quality to his character, again in the best way possible.
How he lowkey plays with the other vampires, being the self-proclaimed "apex predators" of the setting, while actually kinda working with the human characters, really hooked me from E1.
He has a chivalrous thing to himself - doesn't kick Richter while he is most vulnerable refuses to feed on the most vulnerable, that doesn't simply bow to Bathory but wants to see what she can do, and all that.

I wasnt initially that enamored with him. But he just kept doing little things to show that he was much more of a principled and free thinker than all the other vampires in Nocturne, every time he interacted with pretty much anyone my intrigue with him grew.
He seems to be the closest thing Nocturne has to an Isaac, and I dont think theres a higher compliment I could give his character than that

  • @ethanhorn6093

What makes him intriguing (to me) is the more you learn about his history and why he killed Julia Belmont you gain a recontextualized image of why he did what he did and why he might have left Richter alive. Anytime a character's behavior can be redetermined at a later date because of bits of context provided along the way makes reviewing richer an experience and I feel that most strongly with Orlox.

This was an awesome character analysis. Olrox is definitely my favourite character in the show. He's the most interesting character to me. He feels so complex and hard to put into a single box of how to describe him. I shouldn't like him, since he killed Richter's mother, even if his reason is understandable, but on the other, he does seem to have a particular moral compass about power and the elite vs the weak. I also really enjoy whatever is between Olrox and Mizrak, and the way that even if Olrox didn't want to love Mizrak, he can't help it and he does.
I'm really looking forward to your upcoming video on Olrox and Mizrak, since they have such an interesting dynamic.

He had no lines, no character, and as far as I can tell, he hasn't appeared in a Castlevania game since, so I doubt there's that many people who are actually fans of him.

Infact Mesoamerican astrology was highly advanced even for people during the Renascence or enlightenment era. Just wanted to share a neat parallel with Richter and Olrox in the animation.
There’s a scene when Richter gets his magic back on the lake… there is a close up of his boots in the water and he turns to towards the right hand side of the screen … and that is an exact mirror of Olrox’s stance and movement in the beginning scene of the series. Olrox has killed richters mother.. it shows his shoes in the mothers blood… and they turn towards richter…. And so we have that deliberate parallel scene of richter standing in liquid (water rather than blood) and he makes the same turn as olrox did… towards the vampire he is about to kill.
Just thought it was a cool artistic link.. showing they are on the same emotional journey

Olrox is a really fascinating character. Given his background as an Aztec who watched his people massacred by colonisers, I really see where he's coming from in not wanting to worship Erzebet, and yet for the most part he is clever about it. Gotta love the defiance!

I don't normally care for vampires, I find the condition distasteful at best. Olrox in Nocturne is a deeply fascinating character however and I loved whenever he was on screen.
Of course he doesn't care for Erzsabet and her crew, they most likely remind him of the conquistadors and colonizers who destroyed his people and the tribe of his former lover. By nature he is diametrically opposed to someone like Bathory.
They definitely took a minor character from the game meant to be an homage to Count Orlok from Nosferatu, and made him one of the best reasons to watch this new adaptation.

Another great video! Really appreciate your in-depth analysis on the psychology and emotional intelligence of Olrox. I picked up many things you discussed on my first watching (I’ve seen it twice now) but the breakdown has given me more to think about not just as a viewer of the show, but as a writer. I see parts of myself in Olrox because he is strategic and pragmatic. He doesn’t waste time being hopeful or optimistic; he gathers intel, pays attention, then acts accordingly.
    Case in point: *SPOILER ALERT*
The very last scene before Alucard shows up, Olrox leaves the four of them to fight Drolta and the other vamps, you can see Olrox has given up on Mizrak. He went out of his way time and again to show his hand and heart (both in word and deed) only to be rejected by Mizrak in the rudest way. I k ow ppl have hopes the two of them will get together, but I doubt it. Olrox doesn’t seem like the type to waste time on someone who is so inflexible; he’s learned the very valuable lesson of reading the writing on the wall and simply walking away.

Yeah I partly agree. I do think the relationship between Mizrak and Olrox will continue, but Mizrak will need to make amends - not only for what he said to Olrox, but also for how he kept dismissing him at all turns - first when insisting "there's only one God" when Olrox was trying to explain how demons worked, then by jumping to conclusions regarding his former lover's transformation - Olrox was sharing smthg traumatic and Mizrak just showed 0 compassion in that moment lol. But he is changing, and hopefully, he will temper his view of Olrox in the second season

I don’t know if anyone else said this before but I think Olrox’s disrespect to Erzebeth is also a strategy for him as he seems to not to really get invested or included with this from what he saw and what his previous beliefs are so he always tries to show I al not the guy you need by saying “you would do this by someone who does not worship you” either explicitly or with his actions and body language. I think Olrox is strategic but also in a way that is honest he tries to convey his strategies in a way that is most truthful to himself so that he would be able to follow through and he can live his life in the future without thinking “I did this even though I knew it was wrong I did this just for the immediate benefits so now I am paying for this”. He is just not analytical but also a long term planner in every action he seems to not live in the moment but mostly of the future the action brings.
He is an amazing character really, maybe the best that came out of this show, how soon I was on his side and rooting for him even though he traumatized a child was mind blowing. Also I think especially in Castlevania we like more of these kind of analitical characters rather that not thinking before jumping the situation ones as the main series were so deliciously full of them. Even the characters that think black and white (as you mentioned like Dracula and Alucard) were calculative even when they were emotional. That is just a very satisfying character to follow in this kind of show you know they seem full-fleshed and you can believe why they survived this long in this world doing the job they are doing.

A bit strange an Aztec would have a distaste for others who do/did terrible things in the name of their gods considering well...Aztecs. They were surrounded by normalized conquest and cultural human sacrifice, he came from a conquering and enslaving empire himself. One the rest of the local populations helped the Spanish overthrow despite also hating the Spanish. It'd be one thing if they showed he hated imperialism and his nation engaging in the same behaviour even before the fall and was against sacrificing peoples to gods. To only hate authority and people who do things in the names of higher power because the Spanish did it to them just feels like a member of a long standing imperialists nation that profited from the subjugation of others complaining about imperialism only after it happens to his people. Wouldn't have made him less sympathetic to flesh out his backstory and ideals.

There were multiple different peoples under the Aztec Empire, that's kind of how it retroactively earned the name. Even if he was part of the culture at the top of the empire, though that's never mentioned, evils committed by your own state can often be invisible to regular civilians (see also the USA, except in the case of the Aztecs there is no democracy so there isn't even any responsibility for perpetuating that system outside of the nobility, which Olrox clearly wasn't a part of considering his continued disdain for them.) The crimes of Outside Invaders, however, are always clear as day.

Nice generalization, we don't know who he was before he got turned. He's not particularly proud of his heritage since it's only ever others introducing him as an aztec. It's very likely he despised that power structure as well and that is where his disdain for authority originally comes from. From what little we've been given he was not alive when any of the conquering actually took place. He was born at the very end of the aztec empire.

Don't generalize. Not everything and everyone routinely sacrificed other people in the Aztec empire.

@@radioxxxg3n Yeah, what I can say in the case of the Aztec people that although the sacrifices happened they were VERY specific in some festivals to a very specific deity, but even so the Aztec empire was a conglomerate of different tribes who shared the same cultural influences and had a variety of practices, a lot of them worshipped different gods in their settlements and temples, gods who didn't require human sacrifices.

Fun fact : Olrox is a boss in Symphony of the Night, however, he is not given any dialogue nor plot importance.
