One of the greatest gravelly voices of all time - and a jazz/rock one at that. David Clayton Thomas is a gem. Add in, peerless musicianship, like Steely Dan has, and you get pure gold.
You definitely extracted all of the meaning out of these lyrics, as usual. The only thing I would add is that the analogy the song is using is one of a carousel. "Ride a painted pony, let the spinning wheel turn," etc., are references to the "painted ponies" on a carousel. The horses on a carousel not only go in circles around the wheel, but they also go up-and-down as they go around. This goes along with what you said about the ups-and-downs of life. Furthermore the sound effects and calliope-style music throughout are reminiscent not only of a carousel specifically, but of a carnival more generally. You kicked this one's butt again!! Great job.
@@daveking9393 Jmboy did his usual thorough job, finding aspects that I had not even thought of -- like always. I just didn't think I heard him specifically mention the merry-go-round imagery. Unsurprisingly, others did mention it in the comments well before I wandered by, opening my big mouth. Thanks for the kind comment!
Spinning Wheel refers to a Merry-Go-Round, and you were right about it representing the up and downs and turns of life. The music at the end is the music played on a Merry-Go-Round at a carnival. I know not many of them still exist, but this song was written almost 60 years ago. Great music, very creative. Thanks for the review.
Nice! Did not expect to be seeing another BST song so soon! I'm gonna 100% back up what others are saying and also recommend You've Made Me So Very Happy. Thanks JMBOY!🤘
Along with EARLY (first two LPs) Chicago, BS&T fused rock, pop, and jazz (and a tough of blues), which was unique for the era. It’s not just the use of horns or musicianship-it’s that the songs include elements of all of those genres. “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” is a masterpiece.
I remember hearing this first as a little kid age 6, when music was starting to become a part of my life. Love the horns in this and the carousel sounding of the ending. This was nominated for three Grammy's in 1970 winning for best arrangement, and the album won the Grammy for Best Album Of The Year.
My wife and I saw these guys in 1999 during Vet Rock event at Willow Grove Naval Air Base in Horsham, Pa. It was an 8 hour event with other greats like Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Jay and the Americans. Incredible day. Great memories.❤
Classic Blood Sweat and Tears! Shout out to the late great Lew Soloff on his now famous trumpet solo! He could still play it 40 years later....ruclips.net/video/_lOdiRuL-SQ/видео.htmlsi=OQj-1MRNmbvK4uYn
I subscribed the other day. I don't just automatically subscribe to every channel. However, I like how you break down the content of what your listening to both musically and lyrically. You're not just 'oohing and aahing'.
Oom, papa, oom, Oom, papa, oom -- and the calliope crashed to the ground... I was still a really little kid when this song was new and the circus sounds caught my ear. Fusion!
Thomas used the "spinning wheel" aka merry-go-round as metaphor for lifes ups and downs, which accounts for the lines ride a painted pony and the weird flutey music at the end which is associated with the ride. The music is certainly raggedy and I believe on the album, after the laughing, one of them says that wasn't too good was it? To me that adds a certain charm to a bonafide classic.
Youngsters today don't have the PURE creativity as back then without computer correction(s). But humans rather do like conflicts so it seems they want to experience a WWIII. Reason why respecting nature, animals with more dignity should be KEY. Don't know if JM is a musician or not. Been there when BS&T came out with astonishing music around 1970. Very happy to have all their masterpieces.
Even though I grew up with this song, I don't totally understand it. Isn't the painted pony part of a carousel? That's what the sounds at the end remind me of.
Hey JMBoy, you need to do one more BST: God Bless the Child. It's right up there with the two you've already reacted to. Maybe even better. You can thank me later. LOL.
This group was awesome, great arrangements and vocals on everything they did... My Fav - "You've Made Me So Very Happy"

Glad someone provided context. Thanks!

That's what we get when there are 9 artist/musicians that all have their own input into the songs arrangements.
Who's egos, or lack of didn't get in the way.
This jazzy allusion to the Merry-Go-Round that is life has always made me smile🎶
It just dawned on me that it’s the “painted pony” from a carousel ride. 🤪

Love this song and your reaction. And David Clayton Thomas' voice was unique. Great reaction!!!
Big hit back in the day!
That last sound was the sound of a carousel... with the painted ponies.
I remember hearing this first as a little kid age 6, when music was starting to become a part of my life.

The time signature on this joint is crazy.
I believe that was the fastest your channel added another 1,000 New Subs... Quality Gets Quantities.
Your comment about the "Straight and Narrow road signs"... Brilliant, as expected.
You would really enjoy BS&Ts "And When I Die"

You should check out BS&T - “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know with Al Kooper.
Great song, love it!!!!

The music at the end was reminiscing about the kind of music found at carnivals.

Love this ❤ Ferris wheel 🎡 gotta go round!
Um, not to put too fine a point on it, but it's a carousel, not a Ferris Wheel. "Ride a painted pony..."
@@brianmccullough5764 it’s the carnival lifestyle
@@joy88867 yeah, gotta love those carneys

Boo hoo old man.
Thanks for that one; hadn't heard it from them in a long time. Tom Jones did a winger of a version that's pretty tasty too.
Wheres Tom Jones on these reaction channels?
❤❤❤

"Blood, Sweat & Tears is a great band, but they don't have Terry Kath on lead guitar"- Rollingstone Magazine Critic
lol I was thinking that too
Ouch!!!
BS&T and Chicago will be remembered and cherished.. Rolling Stone will ultimately be looked upon as a propaganda rag
Please react to God Bless the Child off the same album.....badass!
That was great

HI DE HO
I knew them from growing up in the 1960's. Not sure what genera you would put this in.
