i have to admit, i admire the fact that she doesnt just do the simple bleep or fake swear, she makes it sound real. "three words you'll never mean" damn. but the WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT in good 4 u is ivonic

i agree but i just feel like its more powerful the explicit way yk? but "promise 3 words you'll never mean" still gives off a story just differently which i will say i liked
I think the explicit versions are all so much better but I’m glad they make clean versions for all the little kids out there. Great songs nonetheless! Edit: I didn’t mean only little kids, if you don’t feel like listening to swear words I’m not making you
i like the explicit versions better. you can really feel her pain. sometimes songs just need the cuss word for you to really feel how the artist is feeling. i dont feel the emotions when its the clean version.
So this is an opinion I've had since hearing drivers license on the radio: the explicit versions are better. Allow me to explain. Olivia Rodrigo, I have noticed, is a genius when it comes to lyric writing, specifically swear words. She puts them in the best spot to have the most emotion and sings them slightly differently from the rest of the song. When I listened to Good 4 U, f*ck stood out because she puts so much emotional emphasis on swear words. On the clean versions, the substitutes are sung just like the rest of the song, and fall flat. Every time i listen to the clean versions I hear the slight lack of emotion on the substitutes and this video proves my point to myself. Also, on the both versions, the clean sounds like a background singer. (again this is all just my opinion) Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. Edit: (i have a bad habit of commenting while watching the video) Happier, i think, is better clean. The swear doesn't really fit the song. Swear words are often associated with anger, and happier is sort of bittersweet acceptance, not mad at all. Thank you for coming to my updated Ted Talk.
what i prefer: (ik nobody cares for this) brutal - explicit (it had more anger to it, and the song is about anger) driver's license - clean (just had a better flow to it) 1 step forward, 3 steps back - (i just kinda liked it better, idk why) deja vu - explicit (also just had a better flow to it) good 4 u - explicit (similar to brutal, had more anger to it, and the song is all about anger) happier - both (i think they both work really well)
I prefer explicit in all the songs I don't know why but they just give a bit more cooler vibes. Just my opinion. Love the SOUR album so much tho like seriously it's amazing
1. Brutal - explicit 2. Divers license - both 3. 1 step forward, 3 steps back - both 4. Deja vu - explicit 5. Good 4 u - explicit 6. Happier - explicit
i think it's very nice of her to have made clean versions, like actual clean versions. not just bleeping it out. it's great for people who are sensitive to cursing or want to listen to it around their parents.
i listen to the clean version bc i like how she replaces the curses with better words, and i really appreciate that she does that because it doesn’t feel like a knockoff of the actual song.
As someone who is a Christian i really appreciate the way she censers her speech so it's not just beeping it out or something, she takes the time to come up with, and re produce all of the clean versions.
when the explicit and clean versions of drivers license played it sounded like "i know i still love you". i feel like that would have been a much better lyric for the clean version ngl
After hearing the explicit versions so many times whenever I stumble into the clean ones it feels so odd, like that wasn't how it was originally intended but it still works haha
She and Taylor are the queens of actually replacing swear words with perfect alternatives in the clean versions rather than just bleeping it or whatever (at least in most cases) and I am here for it
I actually prefer clean on Happier and Brutal but definitely prefer explicit on Drivers License, Deja Vu, and Good 4 u. They’re iconic! And then I like both on 1 step forward and 3 steps back.
I know most edgy teens feel cooler when they cuss, because it makes them seem "older" (even tho I dont really think so) but I actually prefer listening to clean music. I can play it for all my friends and family and Im not really into that teenage angst like all the other O.R. stans. And I mean c'mon how can you NOT prefer happier's clean version? It makes me cry.
I actually cuss a lot (because my friends would cuss pretty often and then I picked up their habit lol) and I agree. I love the clean versions of a bunch of these songs, they're so lyrically clever and sometimes more fun to sing than the original Edit: spelling
I agree! I somehow hate cussing since I was little. When I first heard it, I didnt like it. It makes me uncomfy.

Hot take: I prefer the all clean versions over the explicit, such as in Deja Vu the "Dont like we didn't do ALL THAT TOO" feels more powerful and fits better because there were many things in the song she listed and "that shit too" feels a bit lackluster. And in "1 steps forward, 3 steps back" saying "you got me fucked up in the head boy" sounds pretty weird and out of place. However, hearing them together there is barely even a difference in the musical tones, she did a great job in censorship.
the explicit happier is my fav song in the album but I gotta admit how good the "promise three words you know you'll never mean" and how mellow and kinda careful she sings the clean one
my opinion brutal- explicit driver’s license- explicit 1sf3sb- don’t care deja vu- explicit good 4 u- explicit happier- don’t care she just expresses how s he feels which is what i love about her.
I really like the line "I'm over this teenage dream" - it really shows us, that her illusions are destroyed, a carefree youth is not possible anymore. She sees that she has been come immature and grown enough to leave these illusions behind. "Where's my fucking teenage dream" sounds more like whining and crying. So "I'm over this teenage dream" is acutally my favorite line in the whole song 😅
this is why i like olivia cause the people who’s parents either don’t want them listening to explicit songs or just don’t like them can listen and not feel like they are missing something

i mean, thats not explicit but its still swearing so it makes sense that she didnt change it to that
or where’s that so called teenage dream
I’m glad she replaced the words in the clean version instead of cutting it out like in every other explicit/clean version of an explicit album
Yeah it makes it seem more real
I like that she doesn’t just blur it out, she replaces the lyrics.
Honestly I didn't even know happier was originally explicit. The clean version is just that good
me too, i thought it wasnt explicit
That’s how I was for all of them
