shes so incredible in this role. i never cared for this number prior to this movie, but lashana lynch completely embodies ms honey, being an adult still held back by her trauma but still choosing to survive with compassion in any way that she could, that i was bawling my eyes out when she started singing. she owns the song now.
Matilda and Miss Honey are both victims and survivors of their abuse, but they survive in totally different ways. Matilda is a fighter, she does what she can behind the scenes to right the wrongs, and she speaks up to her abusers when even when she knows there will be negative consequences. She's bold and crafty. Miss Honey is quieter, more subtle. She tries to stay unnoticed and make a difference where she can without causing a scene. At first Matilda is frustrated by Miss Honey's seeming passiveness. But you can see her face change as she realizes that the way Miss Honey fights is just as valiant as the way she does. Miss Honey has survived by taking ownership of what she can, no matter how small that is. She is that small, but stubborn fire. She refuses to give up or be squashed no matter the storm her abuser stirs up. The story is telling us that both ways to survive are good and valid. Brilliant.
I legit always imagined this song’s moment at 2:20 the way the movie had it. With Matilda remembering that moment with the child and putting the pieces in
The musical has Magnus standing in the side, singing his part, because this scene was supposed to happen in your mind. But I do also love this rendition of it where the pieces cinematically fell into place.
What I love is that Matilda isn’t emotional. She’s OBSERVING. She’s ANALYZING. Her face doesn’t read sorrow; it reads anger and the severity of Miss Honey’s abuse. She goes from “I might be special” or “I might be different” to “I HAVE to do something now. We both have no choice left.”
Alisha Weir played this scene perfectly. The look on her face when she sees the scarf and realizes that the story she thought she was making up was really Miss Honey's life. Some fantastic work by both actresses in this scene.
The way she says "for me" always gets me because you get a sense she knows her situation is terrible but she thinks herself so worthless she deserves her lot.
That’s honestly why while I think they kept and cut the appropriate songs, I really wish they kept in Miss Honeys other songs because it shows that this is her story just as much as Matilda’s.
OMG. THIS SCENE. From 2:20…CRYING. I actually watched this in theaters. I was literally sobbing and could hear many others in the theater crying too during this sequence. Such a magical scene and also beautiful well-filmed scene to show the reveal and tale of Ms. Honey’s story ❤
its even more epic when you see the bit after you notice the bits of matilda making up her story revealing that that bit was the part where matilda realizes its not a story and that she just identified the story of her own teacher
I know Matilda is the main character...But Miss Honey is my favorite character in this film. Lashana is just so mesmerizing in everything she does even when she's not speaking.
It took five years after college for me to move out of my parents’ house, start my career and get a studio apartment. As a person with a physical disability, I thought I would never earn enough income to do so. I love how Miss Honey keeps saying, “it is MY house” because finally, as a 28-year-old, I have MY apartment. Similar to the chaos Miss Honey and Matilda experienced, my dad is sometimes verbally abusive so I also resonate with the themes of peace and safety in the song of being in your own home. My apartment isn’t everyone’s dream, but it is cute and comfy and enough…for me. My career is helping kids with disabilities like my own…the same community center I went to as a kid and being a role model that people like us go to college and become independent is so rewarding.
I had to leave my studio apartment ten years ago and move in with my mother. I still miss my little apartment with my book closet, the walking trail, and the stores nearby. Living with my mother is okay and I at least have my own room (and certainly it does as my quiet spot) but I miss my apartment. It was mine. It was enough for me.😢
Lashana Lynch is so compelling in this role. I have probably watched this clip two dozen times and I have gotten chills ever time at 2:20. Her facial expressions through this part, like she is emboldened by the memory of her father, but also grieving her father... she's not a a classically trained broadway singer but she is the perfect casting choice. 10/10.
This is my favorite song in the musical. It's so beautiful and emotional. Magnus symbolizes the love that Miss Honey had as a child and the kind of parent that Matilda longs for. One that actually loves her. Abused children often grow up to become abusers themselves because they have been taught that that kind of behavior is normal and acceptable. What amazes me is that Miss Honey can be so kind and gentle when she was raised by someone as cruel and terrifying as the Trunchbull. It's because she kept the memory of her parents alive in her heart and she knew she was loved by them though they could no longer be with her. I like to think that Agatha was so freaked out at the end, that she ran to the police and confessed to Magus's murder as well as her other crimes against humanity and she spent the rest of her life rotting in a jail cell. But that might be giving her too much credit. She is despicable to the core. Makes me wonder who knocked her around as a kid. Hollywood should do a movie on her backstory like they've done with other villains. It would not make her any more likeable, but it would be interesting to see.
OMG 100% THIS. I literally admire so much those amazing people who actually grow up being traumatized and abused. Personally, I think it's incredible que you grow up to be an kind and respectful person even with the lack of learning from those who must have took care of you.
This is one of my favorite stories of all time since I was a little kid, and Lashana Lynch embodies the goodness, kindness, and vulnerability of Miss Honey so completely. I was a wreck after seeing her perform this
The first musical I managed to convince my parents to watch and I could see my mother tearing up as she realized the little girl was Ms. Honey. A BEAUTIFUL FILM!
I just saw her in Woman King and now this. Her range is beyond impressive. I am so proud of her performance and will watch anything she’s in from now on. Bravo!!!
There are so many moments in this movie I love, including Tim Minchin’s absolutely brilliant lyrics. It really is up there with Paddington 2 as a perfect family movie. But the “I’m Here” scene and this song is a one two gut punch of emotion that had me weeping the 3 times I’ve watched this movie since Christmas
I legit cried when it builded to reveal she was the girl in the story. I knew that they were still gonna keep her backstory but holy cake, i was total mess at watching this.
You can really hear, “Not Perfect” in this. That song also makes me emotional. I hope this movie gives Tim Minchin a ton more new fans. He’s a brilliant song writer and performer.
I was so worried they'd cut this song but I'm so glad it made it in. Lashana did a fantastic job with the emotion in her performance and the way they edited in the back story reveal had me sobbing. They really did an incredible job adapting the show to film
It’s important to the plot! It’s where the story of the escapologist and the acrobat come to a head, and where Miss Honey and Trunchull’s shared backstory is revealed. They’d have been fools to reduce this down to just dialogue. But instead it’s handled-and I don’t say it lightly, I genuinely mean it-FLAWLESSLY lmao
This scene needs to be used as an example in EVERY acting through song class right up there with Judy Dench's "Send In The Clowns". IMPECCABLE performance! My favourite Miss Honey hands down!!!
this scene was translated from the stage so beautifully. a scene that i overlooked so much before is now my favorite. i sobbed in the theater when it flashed back with her younger self. so so well done.
Lashana Lynch, Emma Thompson and the little Alisha Weir deserve an Oscar Nomination for this beautiful movie. This is probably the best movie adaptation of a stage musical I've seen so far
I have played the part of miss Honey years ago and always loved this song so much, but on broadway, it’s always sung by a very classical voice. I really love the warmth and soul from the voice of this version! Wonderful movie from a fantastic musical! 🥰
Miss Honey always had this gentle warmth to her character. When I saw her in the 1996 film, she was like an angel on earth. From the way she speaks, I could tell she came from a place full of love. None of that warmth is lost in this musical adaptation’s Honey. She is still just as sweet and warm, perhaps even more so. Thank you Lashana Lynch for bringing to life the beautiful character of Miss Honey once again.
Lashana Lynch was absolutley perfect for this role. She brings such a vulnerability to the character that I never saw in Embeth Davis You can truly feel all the grief, fear and trauma that she has oppressed for all this time, and when she has her moment the power really pays of. As much as I loved Embeth Davis, Lashana is by far my favorite
This song was mesmerizing. When she sung, you felt her pain. I love her. This song was the best part of the movie. Made me realize that it doesn’t really take much to be happy. You just have to appreciate what you’ve been give. Beautiful rendition.
I like how Miss Honey is proud of the humble, little cottage she lives in AND it’s paid with her own money, which was hard-earned. Being in this modest building, Miss Honey is empowered to thrive on her own terms. There’s this aliveness found in the art work, plants, flowers, and books; it’s like Miss Honey blooms gloriously in this adopted environment. Also, there’s this experience of shared joy echoing from Miss Honey’s spirit, especially in the way Matilda has comfortable access to the scarf, warmed tea, fancy teacup, and big chair. By looking into a person’s home where one’s character is revealed at the very core, experiencing this cottage is a holiday celebration of what fuels Miss Honey’s personhood. Even if Miss Honey doesn’t have Matilda’s psychic powers, she continues to think forward with the world despite facing life’s obstacles. Reflecting about the places she came from, Miss Honey has a moment of dysregulation with a “grief attack.” It happens when her thoughts lead her back to a troubled childhood with Aunt Trunchbowl and long dead father and long dead mother. More importantly, Miss Honey DOESN''T DENY the tears or her personal history; she allows herself to feel pain. To strike a healthy balance, Miss Honey doesn’t give in to self-pity or embitterment as she is emotionally fueled by the pleasant memories of her father, like the outside greenery receiving the rainfall ready to sprout and to become, resiliently and continuously.
I loved how they filmed the scene exactly the same as before during "I'm Here", same camera angles same shots as before just with young miss honey instead of matilda
I have known this musical word by word for years, but still I cried my eyes out at this scene as if it was the first time I'd ever heard the song. It's so powerful, delicate yet full of feeling
I THOUGHT that I had a favorite song in this musical when I saw it on Netflix.....until I got to this scene in the film. This number broke me and punched my heart through my chest.
Lashana Lynch has become my favorite actress of 2022 ... I could take my eyes off of her in Women King. I wasn't interested in watching this movie, but I will because I enjoy an actress who can embody different roles 😉
Watching the movie, this was really the one thing that stuck out to me as better than the stage musical. The emotion in this delivery was just so beautiful, and now I can’t stop listening to it. This was so beautiful and touching, and genuinely hit me in the feels a lot.
I feel like the line: "Everything I need is in here." Is actually a double meaning. She's not only saying that she has everything she needs inside her little house, but she's also saying that without her father, there's no point in trying to get the house that Ms. Trumbrich has, even if it is rightfully hers. Because everything she needs is already in her little house, and there's nothing in that house that she wants, if her father isn't there. I could be wrong, but I just thought that would be a fun thought.
2:18 The flashback with the "I'm Here" scene is amazing. In stage version, after Miss Honey gives the white scarf to Matilda, the father (The Escapologist) appears behind the scene and hugs Miss Honey.
so many layers in Ms. Honey’s voice, a quiet strength, and sorrow with a little fear. if anyone had any problems with the casting they never saw this performance. 😢
The song has the best meaning about life and Lashana sang it with full of hearts. I downloaded, kept and memorized the song. My children watched the movie twiced already! Well done, everyone!
Nobody has done this role as special as she has. Incredible beautiful magnificent. The only miss honey that actually builds….she begins pianissimo and builds. It just builds so beautifully
The part where Matilda realizes that the escapologist and acrobat from her story we're real and that Miss honey. Her teacher was their child is one of my favorite parts of the movie.
This roof keeps me dry when the rain falls. This door helps to keep the cold at bay. On this floor, I can stand on my own two feet. On this chair, I can write my lessons. On this pillow, I can dream my nights away. And, this table, as you can see, Well, it's perfect for tea. It isn't much, but it is enough for me. It isn't much, but it is enough. On these walls, I hang wonderful pictures. Through this window, I can watch the seasons change. By this lamp, I can read, and I - I am set free. And when it's cold outside, I feel no fear. Even in the winter storms, I am warmed By a small but stubborn fire, And there is nowhere I would rather be. It isn't much, but it is enough for me. (x 2) For... This is my house. (x 2) It isn't much, but it is enough for me. This is my house. (x 2) It isn't much, but it is enough. (Don't cry...) And when it's cold and bleak, (Please don't cry...) I feel no fear. Even in the fiercest storms, (Please don't cry...) I am warmed by this small and stubborn fire. (Let me wipe away your tears...) Even when outside it's freezing, (Forgive me. I didn't want to desert you.) I don't pay much heed. (I know that I hurt you...) I know that everything I need is in here. It isn't much, but it is enough for me. (x 2)
Tim Minchin was the right person to write the music for this. As someone that grew up reading everything I could get my hands on by Roald Dahl (especially Matilda), I feel like Tim's songwriting is the closest to what Roald Dahl would have done. And even though there differences between the play and the book, this scene/song perfectly captures the intent and feel of the scene in the book.
this song was so touching to my heart. i’ve lived in an rv with my parents from 2011-2014 and then an rv of my own with my husband from 2015 to now ☺️ so 11 years of rv living and it’s small but has always been the best home and “it isn’t much but it’s enough for me” ❤️
I see the main reason loves this song is how sorrowfully and beautifully portrays how Honey is dealing with her tragedy and the situation Trunchbull put her in. I personally also see how this song represents a teacher’s mindset. I’m not one and don’t want to be one,but I recognize the struggles that just come with the job they’re expected to accept for no reason:low pay, disrespected social status, rowdy kids, parents blaming them for things not even In the job description. My dad’s a teacher,my mom was a teacher,my uncle’s a teacher,my aunts a teacher,my grandma was a teacher and one of my older cousins is studying to be an elementary teacher. There are many who go into the profession so gracefully despite the cruel deck of cards they’re given but are content with the profession. Just doing it is enough for them. And in return, there will be kids who shape the future as all kids do,but the teachers themselves receive rarely any good pay or recognition. But that will never stop a true teacher from giving everything they have to their duty.
At 2:17, I was absolutely sobbing and crying during that moment. Its sooo powerful and emotional. I really felt the emotion in her singing. It really tugged at my heart strings that I swear I could have cried a bucket of my tears. I’m such a big sensitive old softie!! 😢😢😢
Out of all the songs, this one touched my soul. And there are so many good ones! But I’m sure so many of us have had times where we can relate to Miss Honey here. And Lashana Lynch with the vocals ugh 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I saw this on bway and completely forgot about this song until I saw lashana lynch. She steals this movie. And gave this song whole new life. Now it’s my fave song from the show 🥹❤️🔥
when it cuts back to the escapologist's story and the little girl is replaced with miss honey. and it's exactly matilda's story, but with the real little girl now. i can't express what this did to me.
The part where it flashes back to her father, with her as the actual little girl in the story, makes me sob like a baby every time I watch it
Me toooo
Same
Same here, it’s so heartbreaking
Oh yeah him singing to Matilda and Jenny is so moving.
After the song, after Matilda realizing the whole truth, it gave me goosebumps.😮
shes so incredible in this role. i never cared for this number prior to this movie, but lashana lynch completely embodies ms honey, being an adult still held back by her trauma but still choosing to survive with compassion in any way that she could, that i was bawling my eyes out when she started singing. she owns the song now.
I completely agree! This song was made to be on film somehow!
Especially adding with the flashback with Magnus
I completely agree! I felt the same
Omg, so true!
And that controlled vibrato that peaks through in just the right places😢😭
Matilda and Miss Honey are both victims and survivors of their abuse, but they survive in totally different ways. Matilda is a fighter, she does what she can behind the scenes to right the wrongs, and she speaks up to her abusers when even when she knows there will be negative consequences. She's bold and crafty.
Miss Honey is quieter, more subtle. She tries to stay unnoticed and make a difference where she can without causing a scene. At first Matilda is frustrated by Miss Honey's seeming passiveness. Miss Honey has survived by taking ownership of what she can, no matter how small that is. She is that small, but stubborn fire. She refuses to give up or be squashed no matter the storm her abuser stirs up.
The story is telling us that both ways to survive are good and valid. Brilliant.
This made me sob 🥺
Beautifully put, and very accurate.
You wrapped this thing up so well that I believe in my heart, you should write books or movies❤
They're meant to be mother and daughter.
The 'stubborn fire' detail almost makes me sob
Did anyone else cry at this? She deserves more than that.
Me literally I'm sobbing😭
Me every time I see this scene
I cried so hard
Absolutely bawling by the end of this. Definitely have to watch the full movie!
Me!! I keep crying at this scene 💔
Tim Minchin (the songwriter) says he loves what they did with his song, and he cries every time at 2:18. ❤ I can't imagine higher praise.
Tim Minchin and I have that in common
That's when you know that you did it right.
Why did I listen to you 😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤ now I’m doing the ugly Kim k cry
@@brooklynzoo7189hahaha 😅
I legit always imagined this song’s moment at 2:20 the way the movie had it. With Matilda remembering that moment with the child and putting the pieces in
The musical has Magnus standing in the side, singing his part, because this scene was supposed to happen in your mind. But I do also love this rendition of it where the pieces cinematically fell into place.
It’s that one scene WITH the duet that hits home
This film was cast perfectly. Lashana Lynch broke my heart in this number, and she has a gorgeous voice. So heartfelt and so good.
Agreed 100%. She knows the balance of acting sad, but not too sad so that it leaves some tears for the audience
@@evelyn4120 best part of the film for me honestly
I had no idea she could sing so well!!! It was amazing 😢

That’s honestly why while I think they kept and cut the appropriate songs, I really wish they kept in Miss Honeys other songs because it shows that this is her story just as much as Matilda’s.
@matth3w2002 did they cut "This Little Girl"? I'm surprised because it's in the junior version
OMG. THIS SCENE. From 2:20…CRYING.
I actually watched this in theaters. I was literally sobbing and could hear many others in the theater crying too during this sequence. Such a magical scene and also beautiful well-filmed scene to show the reveal and tale of Ms. Honey’s story ❤
Me too tears were streaming down my face
True I was crying A lot during the song
I was crying too. My heart was breaking due to the raw emotional power
its even more epic when you see the bit after you notice the bits of matilda making up her story revealing that that bit was the part where matilda realizes its not a story and that she just identified the story of her own teacher
IKR OMFGG I WAS SOBBING
I know Matilda is the main character...But Miss Honey is my favorite character in this film. Lashana is just so mesmerizing in everything she does even when she's not speaking.

THE WAY I EFFING CRIED WHEN MAGNUS JOINED 🥺
I always feel like My House is the most underrated song from the show, so I'm happy to see it getting its due with this adaptation. She nails it.
Truly cried here and in “When I Grow Up”
Me too
Lashana Lynch is so compelling in this role. I have probably watched this clip two dozen times and I have gotten chills ever time at 2:20. Lovely Ms Honey… I’m crying. As a poor child with a rough home, this movie/ story always meant so much to me. ❤❤❤ Ty Netflix
I hope things get better for you
One of my favorites in the whole musical! Made me tear up, such a lovely song ❤
Ikr
I kinda started crying at 2:18 when the dad bursted through the door. The scene It just matches beautifully with the song
This is one of my favorite stories of all time since I was a little kid, and Lashana Lynch embodies the goodness, kindness, and vulnerability of Miss Honey so completely. I was a wreck after seeing her perform this

They really made this scene so emotional!!!!
This song was mesmerizing. When she sung, you felt her pain. I love her. This song was the best part of the movie. Made me realize that it doesn’t really take much to be happy. You just have to appreciate what you’ve been give. Beautiful rendition.
Beautiful song, beautiful performer, this song breaks my heart and reminds me of my abusive child hood and getting kicked out of home at a young age.

Lashana Lynnch is one of those actress who nails her role every time…she understood the assignment…I need her in more musicals
I feel like the line: "Everything I need is in here."
Is actually a double meaning.
This song makes me cry. What an incredible actress.
2:18
The flashback with the "I'm Here" scene is amazing.
I’ve never seen the musical until this. I’m learning this song because it’s so beautifully touching 😢❤
This is the best video ever ❤️
But made me crying and brokenheart... Super beautiful for her song! I love her singing "this is my House" 🥺❤️
Absolute chills all over my body, what an angel’s voice
I should not be crying but Geez!! 😢 it’s hard to convey being content with being able to survive, well, she did it😢
I love how the camera turns to Matilda in 1:15. It's such a lovely detail. And the way she's looking at Miss Honey says much...
I love this movie and this is hands down my favorite
I watched this movie so many times, one random time this song really hit me and I couldn’t stop the tears….such an incredible voice and movie and cast
This song makes me in tears a lot 😭😭😭😭 but this is so beautiful 😭❤❤❤
Blown away by her performance
Beautiful and sad. The song of someone recovering from a great deal of trauma
The escapologist's bit always makes me tear up, there's just something about it that hits hard, no matter who's singing it
This roof keeps me dry when the rain falls.
This door helps to keep the cold at bay.
On this floor, I can stand on my own two feet.
On this chair, I can write my lessons.
On this pillow, I can dream my nights away.
And, this table, as you can see,
Well, it's perfect for tea.
It isn't much, but it is enough for me.
It isn't much, but it is enough.
On these walls, I hang wonderful pictures.
Through this window, I can watch the seasons change.
By this lamp, I can read, and I - I am set free.
And when it's cold outside, I feel no fear.
Even in the winter storms, I am warmed
By a small but stubborn fire,
And there is nowhere I would rather be.
It isn't much, but it is enough for me. (x 2)
For...
This is my house. (x 2)
It isn't much, but it is enough for me.
This is my house. (x 2)
It isn't much, but it is enough.
(Don't cry...)
And when it's cold and bleak,
(Please don't cry...)
I feel no fear.
Even in the fiercest storms,
(Please don't cry...)
I am warmed by this small and stubborn fire.
(Let me wipe away your tears...)
Even when outside it's freezing,
(Forgive me. I didn't want to desert you.)
I don't pay much heed.
(I know that I hurt you...)
I know that everything I need is in here.
And even though there differences between the play and the book, this scene/song perfectly captures the intent and feel of the scene in the book.
this song was so touching to my heart. i’ve lived in an rv with my parents from 2011-2014 and then an rv of my own with my husband from 2015 to now ☺️ so 11 years of rv living and it’s small but has always been the best home and “it isn’t much but it’s enough for me” ❤️
I cried a lot with this beatiful song and brilliant performance. Thank you!
This song made me bawl my eyes out the cinematic where so emotional and well done
Ms Honey has such a lovely voice
I love her in this movie especially this scene. Lashana really owned her role
Such a heartbreaking, powerful song. What an amazing performance and such a voice!
Out of all the songs, this one touched my soul. And there are so many good ones! But I’m sure so many of us have had times where we can relate to Miss Honey here. And Lashana Lynch with the vocals ugh 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
This scene is so powerful ❤️
Btch you made me cry, i never imagined this would do a hard turn of a plot twist
I saw this on bway and completely forgot about this song until I saw lashana lynch. She steals this movie. And gave this song whole new life. Now it’s my fave song from the show 🥹❤️🔥
This song just tuggs at my heart
Among all the songs this musical has to offer, this one in particular…DAMN IT SHES SO GOOD QAQ
So good to the point of bursting into tears, literally.
2:13 the singing pitch’s give me chills
I cried so much, she did this role beautifully.
I cry when I hear this song. It's so emotional. I love Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey. She has such a wonderful singing voice.
Why TF did this make me cry, she's so gorgeous she's the perfect casting 😭
I still come to this song whenever I need to reconect with myself. So beautiful!
Is anyone else gonna talk about how little Jenny has pigtails?
*GAASSSSPPP* THAT MUST BE WHY TRUNCHBULL HATES PIGTAILS
😱🤯😲😮
😮Oh yeah. Maybe intentional.
The little girl also looks similar to the girl who played Lavender in the original film.
OK, This song makes me cry longer😭😭
this song is so beautiful it makes me cry 😢
Same here I couldn’t stop
The story and song always makes me emotional
Ok so the did amazing with this song i cry almost everytime and i also sing the male role part everytime as its is SO emotional. LOVE IT
She epitomizes this role . Lovely singing cheers Ms Lynch !
😊what a beautiful voice. I hope she has a long happy future doing what she loves, wow.
I was crying when Lashana Lynch and Carl Spencer sang together
when it cuts back to the escapologist's story and the little girl is replaced with miss honey. and it's exactly matilda's story, but with the real little girl now. i can't express what this did to me.
