- Ridgid k-400 drain snake cable replacement. The new cable is from the company drain cable direct. I ordered a 3/8 cable no core with double male threaded coupling ends. I don’t use the Ridgid cable because I don’t like the bulky end. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for this video! I snapped my cable in my machine that looks just like this when I was unclogging a bathroom sink. I have no idea how to replace it and I have a replacement cable. This video made me feel confident that when I get into work today I can change it out with no stress now. You the man 💪🏽
Awesome hope the video helps. I would just make sure the cable is installed in the same direction as the cable u remove from the back of the drum. Heads up u can repair that old cable if u need a backup for the future.
@@handylandlord most definitely did. I already installed it and snake oiled it up good. Just gotta test it out now on a clog drain. For the most part it looks well put together. It’s only a 35 feet cord so hopefully it doesn’t untangle itself over time in the drum.
I do have this machine 1/2" cable tho its a beast. Plumber of 20 yrs never had to change a cable until today
That’s great! I love this machine my next favorite is my ryobi handheld battery machine Model p4001. Thanks for watching hope it helped.
I have and I love it. I just put a ½x90 cable and just ordered an autofeeder can't wait to use it again.
Yeah I like this little machine too. Never lets me down. The only thing I don’t like is the cable it comes with because it’s hard to get through 90 with the large ridgid cable end. I changed the cable years ago. So I love it.
I have the K-400 as well. It originally had a 3/8 75 footer in it. I bought a new drum a couple of years ago & added the 1/2 75 footer to it. When I originally bought my machine it came with the auto feeder so I’m happy about that. I added the guide hose to it about a year ago. It makes it a little more difficult to tell what the cutter is doing but I also like not getting slop all over me, so it stays on. I also have a Ridgid K-750 with a 3/4 inch 100 footer that I break out occasionally. I will use that if there are roots in the main line. The K-400 was never designed for roots so it’s good to have both machines available.
Sounds like you have a good setup. I've used a K-750 I always liked the wheel on the handle for loading in the truck and the glides for going down stairs. I am currently running an electric eel machine ruclips.net/video/4kr-c0yTeb8/видео.html. What are you using for bathtub drains? I love my little ryobi drain auger 18V. Thanks for watching
Thank you for this video! It helped my husband a lot!
Happy it helped
Thanks for the video!!! I learned so much. Yes I have same machine. It's ok. But the stock line head is too fat.
I'm going to order your type of snake!! That's brilliant.
Any links to share about the company that sells the double ended snake line.
But one thing I worry about with the new snake is that you used a wrench to connect it.
I worry that it will spin off.
Thanks again.
Thanks again so much. Here's a few beers on me!! 🍻 🍻

I order from drain cables direct not affiliated or compensated for promoting the company. Ive just had good experiences with their cables. I completely agree, the ridgid cable end is too fat. the nut on the end seems like it will come loose but it has a locking washer and Ive never had an issue. I just had cable with channel locks or vice grips and tighten nut down securing the cutting head. Thanks for the beers!!
Thanks. Wish i would have seen this berore i ordered my rigid brand replacement🤣
Yo! Great video. My cable is tangled inside the drum and won’t come out all the way. The machine also wobbles around because of the imbalance. How do I fix that? Any help would be appreciated
Thanks for the vid!
Rigid says this model is only good for up to 3in drain lines. Have you used the k-400 on 4in clean outs?
The Ridgid machine is great but I do not use it for main drain lines. I have a larger machine for sewer mains. ruclips.net/video/4kr-c0yTeb8/видео.html
Need to remove and discard of the cable lock set screw. It is provided during packaging to keep the cable from coming out of the drum. It can grab the users glove during operation and cause serious injury. Please read the instructions. Other than that I enjoy your vedeos.
Could this machine use both size cables home depo only has the 3/8 cable. But I figured I could buy the half inch for my main drain could it be swapped out
To be honest I’m not sure. I’ve only ever seen the 3/8 cable in this machine. It’s easy enough to switch cables. If u end up running 2 cables, I like to use a small tire to store my extra cables. My main drain machine ruclips.net/video/4kr-c0yTeb8/видео.html
I also use cyclones (video coming soon). Bathtubs I use a ryobi handheld machine. ruclips.net/video/5dSvS1FFHyM/видео.html
Thanks for watching.
Yep, they can be swapped out pretty easy. My machine came with the 3/8 cable, I wanted the 1/2, so rather than pull the 3/8 out of the drum, I bought an extra drum for the new 1/2 cable. It’s really quick to change drums but I haven’t had the need to run the 3/8 again. But if you want to pull the 3/8 out for the 1/2 you can.
I have the K400 and the cable twisted in the drum so only comes out about 20 feet. Any help getting it fixed would be helpful, or do I just try to cut the cable and take it out in pieces? What do I need to cut the cable? Thanks
I’ve had this happen. Pull the section that is twisted out of one of the 3 holes in the drum. Try to spin the drum and untwisting the cable. If that doesn’t get it, pull the section that is twisted out of one of the 3 hole then pull all the cable out of drum. Disconnect from back then reinstall cable into drum through normal hole. Either way, first step is to get that kinked section out of drum through one of the 3 holes. This will be a little difficult. Thanks for watching
I have the k400 and was wondering if I can replace the cable with a 100 ft cable? Thanks
The k400 is a good machine but if you ever get a chance to use a k3800, you'll never go back. The drums on the 3800 swap really fast because it's a direct drive, not a belt drive. The auto feed option on the 3800 is far superior to the 400 as well.
The 3800 with a 1/2 cable is probably capable of doing most of what you 5/8 EE machine is solving
Interesting, I've never seen a k3800. I have an old Gorlitz machine but motor is bad and no replacement available. I truly like hearing what machines people are running. I actually have been trying out some flex shaft machines. Hoping to get a video out soon. Thanks for watching
when you attach a new cable to the drum which direction should it be going looking from the front -right or left? Would all power sewer snake cables be attached the same?
What size was the original cable diameter? is it a 1/2 inch?
I think this machine can be purchased with 1/2 or 3/8 cable. My machine came with 3/8 75 ft cable
👍👍
Do you use the Ridgid unit for main sewer line , for example 4". I agree with you that plumbing calls are the most frequent.
I run an electric eel main line machine with 110ft of 5/8 cable and male threaded ends. It’s the same machine u can rent from Homedepot. But I’ve changed the cable because I didn’t like the electric eel cable. This machine is a monster. Hard to take up and down the steps. Hope this helped.

The drain machine could save on plumbing bills. May I ask what you paid for it?
Plumbing is my number #1 service call. The machine was around $500 I purchased it 5 years ago from Homedepot. The new cable was $140.
I also like the ryobi P4001 drain cleaner.
I have the K-400 with 1/2 cable and need to switch to the 3/8". What is the smallest drain line that I can put this cable through?
I run 1.5 and 2 inch drains with 3/8 cable. I’m not a fan of the ridgid cable end tho, it’s too big.
Is this plastic nest for the cable strong enough? In greece we have same custom machines but with metal nest
I worked at a hospital years ago and I did see a Ridgid k-750 with a cracked plastic drum. So far the plastic nest/drum for cable is holding up good for me. Thanks for watching
I do have that machine, lent it out and the user brought it back and I had to replace cable too cause it kept getting tangled inside the drum. I recently ordered the auto feeder, can I install it without taking out the existing cable?
What are the reasons for wanting to change a drain cable or how do you know when to change it?
when it gets tangled up. it bends and its tangles up like spaghetti inside.
Awesome video! 👌 I had the same problem with the bulky head.
Happy Easter!! Yeah I’m not a fan of the ridgid cable. If u get a cable with the male threaded ends it makes a world of difference. I didn’t know u did repairs?
@@handylandlord Yeah, well maybe not as good as you, but renovated my last home, redid my bathrooms, floor and roof. At first, when I started ten years ago, I had to do everything, that's the way I saved my money to buy my first rentals. I also did management and car repairs.
@@handylandlord I had to delegate, 3 kids and 27 units rentals plus full time career was starting to be a lot.
@@tomyshaw977 Time management is hard. I enjoy doing the work.... Most days haha
@@handylandlord You are a man of value, like I always say, we need more people like you. Keep it up handy Landlord.
how do you unkink a kinked hose...
Recommend getting the cable out of the drum through one of the 3 holes. Removing the blade, then removing the screws on back of drum and reinstalling cable.
Great video. Have you tried using this for the main line pipe?
Thanks. No I have a larger machine for main lines. If I was going to run it in a main line I would just start with a small blade and slowly step up. If u pull back roots I would be careful. Don’t want to get it stuck or twist cable in line.
@@handylandlord thanks for the reply and advice. I bought this machine for the main line because I can’t afford the bigger ones. If this doesn’t work out then I am thinking of saving for a more powerful machine.
I use an electric eel machine. U can find them used at Home Depot equipment rental.

@@handylandlord thank you
I’m having troubles getting this thing untangled, any suggestions?
Gotta get the k1500 next
Can you add a 100’ cable in it?
Is 1/2” cable hood for doing a sewer line
I use a larger machine with a 5/8 cable 110ft long. Check out this video ruclips.net/video/4kr-c0yTeb8/видео.html
Can you use a 1/2 inch cable in it?
Nevermind I see in the other comments you can
I've only ever used 3/8 cable.
I have the k400, the cable got twisted inside the drum, can't pull the cable out all the way cause of the twist 🤔
Sounds like u hooked a big one. It can be extremely hard to get untwist. If you can pull the twisted part out of one of the holes in the front of the drum. Then u just have to start working with it to get it untwisted, spin the drum / cable to see what starts unwinding the twist. I like to use leather gloves and vise grips to grab the cable and pull it out of the drum. You will eventually have to cut that section of cable out. I would not cut the cable until it’s untwisted and out of the machine due to all the tension. If this is a ridgid cable it has a wire core that makes it hard to use a cable repair coupling. Hopefully this helps.
Yep , has a wire core, thanks Bro.
No problem. Good luck. I had a hard time removing/ drilling the wire to make room for the repair coupling. Maybe just order a repair end and trash the damaged side of cable. I like the threaded male coupling part # E3301 at drain cables direct. www.dcddrain.com/category/38_blades_&_accessories
A true professional Doesnt have any problems with finessing the bulb end down the fittings, only the hole-pokers do. Just sayin !
Haha 😂 I’m not a plumber just a hole poking landlord. Thanks for the good laugh. U may like this video: ruclips.net/video/4kr-c0yTeb8/видео.html
