I am the oldest sister and this song gets me every single time and brings me to tears. It's sad to see how families put a lot of burden and expectations into a brand new little life. That is why many of us, the oldest siblings out there have in common feeling unheard, not validated, unseen, as if you were going to solve all the family issues yet you have in your power to work on this, transform it, and let it go to prevent passing, as much as you can, to next generations. Personally, this song and let it go from Frozen are two really powerful songs with great lyrics.

And when Mira looks uncomfortable or scared by Luisa’s strength and the burden she’s carrying, that’s when Luisa starts dancing. Even though she’s still singing about her burdens and struggles, she’s doing a fun dance as if to show Mirabel “see, it’s okay. We’re having fun” even though the fun part is all on the outside. It’s just for show to make Mirabel feel better.

As a deep voiced woman this stood out so much. Alto women are the villains or the old maids. Not the reliable, beloved sibling. My whole life I've had one Disney song that wasn't a guys part I could sing and it was Ursula who was based on a drag queen. That's what people think of my deep voice. There are a handful of songs by some of the mezzo-soprano princesses that I can sing, but those are few and far between and often have a high note that kills it. But here's a true alto song by a character who's not elderly and not evil.

Hercules had to do "labors" that he probably didn't want to do, for the faults of another (Hera). Luisa has so much pressure from her abuela to do all these things she doesn't want to do too. Some from the movie being rerouting rivers, fixing leaning houses, rounding up donkeys and carrying them on her back, etc. She's the only one you see through the movie constantly working, even when she loses her gift. It isn't assumed, it's laid out clear as day.

@sugarush magnolia 🌸 Sort of... being overly emotional is seen as a negative as far as the movie is concerned (The most emotional character in the movie is considered a total joke that isn't worth considering and the movie never stops relentlessly tormenting her), and a lot of the movie seems to deem controlling one's emotions as the positive, but not to the point of denial.
      .
The main reason why the movie doesn't treat emotion as the enemy is because the movie is an "internal" battle, not an external one (not even an externalized battle). An external battle tends favor rising above your emotions. A internal battle tends to favor becoming one with your emotions.

Really pushing home how much she is there for her family "in service" to them as her only purpose, and that scene where she's holding her over the steep cliff and it cracks translates to me that doing that is breaking her, constantly dragging her down to save everyone, to hold them up. Pressure in other words. Its a really good song made better with good visuals.

She saves her from danger with her strength, aka what shes stressed and what shes pressured about, which I find genuienly heart wrenching. Its bittersweet...and i love it

Personally, I think the reason we see that Luisa is constantly protecting Mirabel in this song is because she never wants her to feel how Luisa thinks shed feel without her gift (worthless). The difference between Luisas relationship with Mirabel and Isas relationship with Mirabel is really cool to see. Luise clearly loves Mirabel so much and wants to her/protect her, whereas Isa sees Mirabel as "getting off easy". She doesnt have a gift, so Isa sees that as he not having to provide anything for the town or family. This movie is so good.

And just to add, you have to think for everything Luisa is going through (the idea she's only useful for what she can provide) she can relate to that "worthless" feeling; her strength isn't really "hers" but for the benefit of everyone around her. There's a kindred spirit there, and being the older sibling, a protective instinct (obviously.)
So, so much depth. And as the younger siblings myself, I can see Luisa in my sister a bit: stronger than she ever should have had to be. ❤

I have two younger siblings, I watched this movie with my little sister because she begged me to watch it. I sobbed in front of her during this scene, it’s the hardest thing to talk about as an older sibling. but it doesn’t matter if your parents are neglectful or not, the weight of an older sibling is always there. Everything Luisa says is so true and important. And as much as I can argue with my siblings sometimes, as much as an older sibling fights with their younger siblings, you can never truly hate them. I hated the movie at first because it resembled my life so much, the family fights and arguments, but after I got over it I made sure to hug my mom and brother and sister, and tell them I love them. I realize how this movie helped me grow, at the time I was a teenager and I always fought my mom 😂 like teens do. But I realized we were all struggling, and this movie helped me realize that.
I went on a bit of a rant there but Disney should know how much I appreciate this movie ❤ and how important it is to realize the mental health matters, I love how they portrayed it for younger kids

I like how donkeys are everywhere in the song.
Donkey do a lot of carrying and heavy lifting. They carry and carry and carry without getting tired for a long time. They are a literal symbolism of how louisa is being used as a pack mule by her family and the entire village.
When the relaxation scene came on the donkeys have horns on them to portray that they are pretending to be unicorns. The donkeys want to be carefree and happy like unicorns because to the donkeys the unicorns don't have the trouble that they do.
Louisa wants to relax and be like the 'unicorns'. She needs a break but doesn't want to lose her value and bonds by not being there to do things for others. So instead she begins taking on the weight of the world out of love for others and a feeling of obligation towards the encanto y la familia.
She puts on a facade of being unbreakable (the three ringed circus) and always ok but the pressure and stress is slowly building up until she feels like she is going to pop (the guesser feild)

I genuinely loved that so many of the things asked of Luisa were so trivial, but since her strength comes from magic she is under the family pressure to “earn” her miracle. The townspeople should have easily been able to round up all their own donkeys, but nope, have the strong girl do it. It made the ending so much more powerful when the rest of the town came to rebuild - magic made their lives easier, but the Madrigals are more than the sim of their gifts and don’t need them to find fulfillment. Edit: my bad on the name, y’all. Autocorrect is a bitch

Let's be honest, this song hits hard for every older sibling but there's a very crucial part of the animation that needs to be talked about. When the final chorus starts, you can see Luisa afraid while holding the falling rocks. It's such a powerful and scary thing that perfectly enhances the weight of the lyrics.
Edit: so I'm seeing a lot of people talking about middle siblings and stuff. I'd like to clarify. "Older sibling" does not mean OLDEST sibling. I'm not the oldest, I'm the second of four. I was the middle child for 8 years. For those of you who would like attention for middle or even youngest children.

I am always watching over my older siblings and helping them out with their task for I am the tallest member of my family so I can naturally help reach places that they cant reach naturally, as well my family is putting all their fate in me to accomplish my goal of becoming a RN and the first member of the family to get a job in the medical field and hopefully later on a anesthesiologist. I can never complain, but my family has no one else to count on." Due to that wiring, people that feel this have never made a song about it before. It cuts deep right to the way that feels. for me, it wasn't the ending face but the one at 2:36 that gets me- where she's looking at her sister as she's slowly losing her grip on the rocks piling on her. It's like her little moment of weakness before snapping out of it and putting on her strong face again as the friggin house falls on her.

I love how, even though Luisa is struggling with all of her pressure, she still, through the song, cares for Mirabel. Always catching the rocks before they fall, standing in front of the boulders, stopping to adjust her glasses, etc. It just shows her character and how good of a sister she is.

She beats up obstacles with power and thrust while she carries and holds her sister gently and delicately. She knows how to balance strength and tenderness.

thats why she said no mistakes. With that kind of power, she could easily destroy something or kill someone. That adds to the pressure.

"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service." "Give it to your sister it doesn't hurt, see if she can handle every family burden." "Give it to your sister and never wonder, if the same pressure would've pulled you under."
As an older sister of 4 who has been babysitting since I was 9 or 10 and has had some difficult conversations with my parents, I relate to these lines a bit too much.
