  • Juneteenth is an annual holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday has its roots in Texas, where on June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced that all slaves in the state were free. This came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery.
The news of freedom traveled slowly, and many slaves in Texas had no idea that they had been legally emancipated until Granger's announcement. The newly-freed slaves immediately began to celebrate, and Juneteenth festivities were born. The holiday spread across Texas and eventually throughout the United States, with celebrations often including parades, cookouts, and other community events.
Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a day to celebrate African American freedom and achievement, and to reflect on the ongoing struggle for racial justice in America. It is a time to remember the past and to look forward to a better future.
