I been watching all your videos this far on your rig .I am the previous owner of this Landcruiser which makes me the 3rd and you the 4th owner now .I’m glad it went to a great home now seeing what you been doing to her .Keep up the good work and if you plan on keeping the LX wheels I found the 5th spare rim and a metal bar for the sliders that I located the other day if you want to come by and pick them up anytime buddy …
Hey BENITO!! How are you buddy ! Glad to see you found these videos. I am doing my best to treat your baby as well as I can to bring her back to life. I actually won't be using those sliders, so I can bring them back for you if you still want them or want to give them to a friend. But I would love that 5th wheel if you don't mind. Lets keep in touch bud! If you don't have it saved, I am 512-560-8176
If the head gasket has passed all tests, then I think you are just looking for trouble by taking more apart. Once the head is off you'd might as well refresh the bottom end too. I'm sure it consumes a fair amount of oil between intervals like every high mileage 80 I have dealt with, so unless that bothers you enough, my opinion is run it after refreshing all that external stuff.
I have never done a head gasket as pm no matter the mileage on this engines. If there is no signs of headgasket leakage, just run it as is. You are replacing all cooling system components anyways. A lot of these engines blow the gasket because the cooling system is not up to par, whether it be from neglecting pm or just a bad component on the cooling system that should have been replaced for pm (bad radiator, leaking water pump, bad phh etc). With this said, there are people that will do this as a pm job.. To each their own...Name is Robert btw, CC93cruiser on MUD.. keep up the great vids...
I have always been of the same mindset as you describe, and never done a headgasket unless there is an obvious reason. The MUD crowd has me backtracking on that and second guessing myself. I am "baktasht" on MUD. Great to meet ya!
I just discovered and subscribed. I love the FZJ 80 and really enjoy watching you rebuild the engine and look forward to you refurbishing the rest of the triple lock 80. I watch a lot of car/truck rebuild channels and really like how you explain the step-by-step tear-down process. To answer your question that you asked yourself, would you get your money back? I say hell yes. I'm sure I'm not the only one that is watching that is interested in possibly buying the finished 80.
Thanks for joining, and welcome to the adventure !! I love these trucks. I have restored a few over the years, but I have almost always either broken even or made a small loss. I really enjoy working on them and bringing them back to life as a hobby. The market for these 80 series in the last 2 years has blown up! I jus started working on pulling the head today. I should have the next video in the series uploaded in a few days with the head coming off. If you haven't checked it out yet, take a look at the last couple videos in the series where I scoped each cylinder with a scope/camera and all of the exhaust ports. I just can't stand to put it back together when it's so dirty. The more parts I remove, the more I want to keep disassembling and cleaning parts :-)
@@NKPGarage I've already watched all the videos in the series on this 80, I even ordered the same cylinder scope today off Amazon. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Currently I own a 5 gen 4runner as my adventure truck, but my dream rig is a 97 triple lock 80.
@@Sentry1835 Thanks for the encouragement. I just got the cylinder head off and posted the next video a few hours ago. Next on my list are removing the upper/lower oil pans, oil cooler, timing cover, and power steering pump. Should be fun.
I just replaced my thermostat and didn't even think/know about the gaskets behind that piece the thermostat fits in,,,,any idea on the gasket part numbers that go there? TY. I did replace all of the other gaskets you mentioned.
Awesome video! Do you know the part number for the top and bottom o-ring at 10:48 ? My bottom o-ring there seems to be bad, and I have fluid pooling in that divot as well. Thank!
Absolutely! 90301-29006 is the part number. There are 3 of them. If you want to support a Land Cruiser community member you can pick up the whole set including thermostat here: absolute-wits-end.com/80-series-1fz-thermostat-and-bypass-o-ring-kit/

Hey man do you have any experience with Landcruiser Specialist in Austin? Taking mine there for a headgasket job soon. It's not overheating or losing much oil but they say it's definitely blown so Idk.
@NKP Garage Yeah I can't find anyone with anything negative to say. I'm at about 230k miles and just hoping there aren't any more surprises waiting for me in the bottom end.
@NKP Garage They pressure tested it whatever that means. The mechanic said he got it up to 15 and it was losing coolant but that's more than what the radiator cap is rated for so I'm not sure what to make of it. The whole cooling system is rusty with orange sludge on the cap and the coolant smells like exhaust. Other than that it seems fine. The oil pressure gets pretty low at idle but I think that's common with 80s. Temps never get above half.
@NKP Garage for what its worth, the mechanic said I can probably leave it and drive as is for a very long time without issue. But since I'm planning on taking this thing on trips across the country, he thinks I should do the headgasket.
I guess I'm a bit of an oddball when it comes to cars. My wife and I never really "keep" vehicles for long. Most of our vehicles we buy, enjoy for a year, maybe 2 years, and then sell to get something else. But, at the same time I am very meticulous when it comes to maintenance and repairs. I go a little overboard, even knowing that I'm not going to keep a vehicle that long. She always tells me "the only people getting a good deal in your history of car ownership, are the people that buy them from you". I'm almost always losing money on cars when I sell them. But I have fun restoring things and tinkering.
@@NKPGarage that makes sense to car nerds like us. The enjoyment and fulfillment I get from cussing and mumbling to myself when I work on my LX470 is equally gratifying. In this case, if you have the money and you enjoy going down the rabbit hole with this build then do it. You only live once, might as well enjoy it while you can. The one caveat, don't go too far! Ha!
great video. if you have the money and don't have to have it done right away, I would do it, because you will be done with all of the parts you are already changing and then the head gasket will be gone and you will have to do it all over again, plus all the work are already doing. it is peace of mind if nothing else, you can take it anywhere and people that will be interested in it in the future will see that you took care of it. if the miles were lower then maybe not. I got a 97 triple locked with 168k and will probably do it at 200k but I know that I will have to do all the stuff you are doing plus the head gasket and who know what else. but triple locked ones are already a rarity in the US, in the future will be even harder to get one.
That is very true. These are definitely becoming more and more rare. And as far as finding these that have been well maintained, it seems like finding a needle in a haystack, very very rare.
