- Meet Karen and her husband John, who describes his wife as an 'agony aunt' to the town. They take us around Redcar and describe the mood after the closure of the SSI steelworks. Panorama is in Redcar to find out how the town is coping after the closure. Around 2,000 people have lost their jobs. The government has promised £80 million in an aid package. As a local of the area ( New Marske ) I spent many a time in Redcar in the 60s/70s, back then it attracted quite a lot of tourists, I've seen many video's of present day Redcar and to be honest it's not the fun place I remember, sad to see empty shops and business owners struggling but I guess many towns are the same. Hope there are better times ahead because I have great memories of this seaside town.
Very sad to see. Love Redcar, lived there for many years, some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.
Love the grub at at their shop, I've lived all over Europe and the U.K. as a kid and as a former British soldier, home is Redcar I wouldn't move if I won the lottery (well maybe too kirky village😉), people are honest and a spades a spade, love this town and wouldn't want too bring my kids up anywhere else!.
Where’s kirky village?
0:42 IT'S A NSX!
It's still in my heart
Redcar is a wonderful place. I visit there every year on my annual trips to the UK from Australia.
SWF it isn’t a lovely place tbh maybe for a holiday
my home town has been going down hill since new goverment has came in nice they done the seafront but there's more shops needed and family attractions this town used to be booming in the 1980's and now look at it .......
Conway121 The Troll 1950s*
I lived in Redcar till I was 16 then like so many left the town looking for work in 1981. I miss it, I’d go back. I still 41 years later think of it as home.
Let the people keep their heritage!!!
yet how strange I was born in redcar and still live in redcar and still not much has been done to help local business owners
shit init nathan lol
Having lived in guisborough for many years and going to college at redcar now living in Scotland, i do hope redcar gets a resurgence since this town is were i spent my younger years.
5 years later I’m still living here is Redcar, still not very lively but it’s still a lovely place.
Hey I'm in Australia and I'm still listening about redcar
redcars a lot better now i live there lol
Why the subtitles? Are there actually people who don't understand what they are saying?
+BOT Greg Does seem bizarre. Must be aiming for a mostly American audience, I guess.
+Martin Rayner even then... it's easy to understand
because the BBC is not owned by British people anymore.....
+BOT Greg because there are people unable to hear., that's to say deaf
+Martin Rayner, I am in that American audience, but being British I checked with my American wife. Almost everybody here in California would understand what he is saying UNLESS they have hearing difficulties in general. I know first hand that in the Northeast, some accents are unintelligible, and some dialects indecipherable. "John from Redcar" is far from that. I believe the subtitles are for those with impaired hearing.
RUclips has a "feature" that can automatically generate subtitle text, but it has many errors, some even reverse the meaning. Perhaps the BBC want to avoid the dialogue being subjected to that.
Thank you for being so honest and the shop looks like a good thing for your community
I've been there before......lovely place by the beach.....
I’m from Middlesbrough, you can tell the accent anywhere you go in the world. I’ve picked it up on holiday, unmistakeable. Lol😅
Rip kazza always love ya ❤️
Redcar is great it’s really busy again!
Redcar is a shit hole
Really busy with smackheads.
Everywhere in Yorkshire
Update : Redcar is an amazing place to visit and stay for a holiday. Literally dozens of new businesses have opened. Thriving town. Numerous new drinking theme pubs and eateries. Community minded people. FRED Friends of Redcar is one such group who try to keep our beaches clean. 1st Sunday of every month "volunteers " litter picking team ready and enthusiastic. Carl Quartermain and his lady wife are the driving force behind the volunteers.
Why is Redcar such an amazing place to visit, name one thing? Yeah people really love visiting new businesses don#t they. Redcar is a shit hole and i hate living here, full of alcoholics, drug dealers and users, yeah really brilliant place to live. I want out as soon as i can
Unfortunately Redcar is still a shadow of it's former self. It's not as good as the days when you had: Woolworths, M&S, the co-op department store and Game in the high street. We are still a long way from thriveing yet
Everything has closed we had M&S and Booths and cool stuff there’s nothing left but the closed down Steal works and our closed cinema it’s a shit hole it’s sad and there’s no money here, there’s 1000 in my school and it’s chaos, they make it out to be nice it’s just sad most of us can’t afford food there’s no jibs
Shocking how many😢 homeless there is
Beautiful town it will survive trust me there's places all over the world world love what Redcar has the Kinsman ship the history the Spirit of the Place It walks with Pride
The Tories did this.
Get fucked
Ive lived in redcar my whole life and I know seven years ago, it wasn't like this THE TORIES DID THIS MATE
I was there in the 70s and the local kids would ask for 1 pound to protect your parked car, if you didn't pay the car would be trashed on return, tried calling the police and they advised me to give them the pound. Has the price gone up now?
3:00 gone now
We watched this in geography at school
