Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. After a heist goes wrong, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). Soon he realizes the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash and is forced to shift gears and go on the offense. - Кино

Fun Fact: after the production of this movie, it was discovered that the Driver is literally me. It is me who he is like. I am him.

Everyone talks about the sudden out of the blue violence, but no one talks about the real reason it feels so shocking. Most people are used to sudden violent scenes by now. But it’s rare to find scenes in action films that use SILENCE this effectively. If feels shocking and real because that’s exactly what it would sound like during and after and event like that. No score to try to stir up an emotion, nothing. Just silence and a ringing in your ears, left to contemplate the fact that you just witnessed three murders in front of you.
Out of the blue violence?

This is basically a dude where his threshold for danger is very high. Like your average person in that situation would obviously go into a state of panic, and then in the state of panic obviously they wouldn't be able to think very well. However you see how when he knows that there's danger instead everything slows down. The director is a master of subtlety in most of the personal interactions of the characters in this movie, then he switched abruptly to the swift, bloody, brutal violence of a Kurosawa samurai movie. The beautiful soundtrack meshed so well with movie, like John Barry's soundtrack did for "The Specialist" with Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone.
This comment is so underated, agree with you mate, I really like their cinematic shots, and how they build a moment of anticipation, but sometimes it lack of anticipation like this one scene, they build anticipation with the driver, then boom she's dead, it just come out of nowhere 😁👍
Kavanski - Night Call. Thank me later.
That reference to John Barry's score made me sit up. Love that soundtrack. 'You are the rigger, I am the trigger, I make the call.'
I love his creativity with self defense. The mattress as a blocking barrier and the shower rod as his weapon, genius!
Damn, that curtain rod kill was brutal as hell. He didn't even think about it either, just looked up, grabbed it and impaled the guy like it was nothing.
This movie was haunting and stuck with me the first few times I’ve watched it.

What I love about this scene is that it gives the audience confirmation that the Driver is a complete psychopath, that he’s willing to do anything to fulfil his delusional hero complex despite the fact he is the hero of this story.
He's just trying to help his neighbors and survive, doesn't seem psychopathic to me
@@zarathustra1430 He's more maniac than psychopath probably yea
I don’t really see him as a psychopath or a maniac, just an extremely cold blooded and violent guy when the situation calls for it. He shows pretty much no emotion when turning into a savage.
That’s part of the brilliance of this movie, having the unknown backstory on the driver and not having a clue that he is the way he is. Or why he is the way he is after his ruthless nature in an extreme setting is exposed. We’re all pretty much left in the dark about that, haha especially the antagonists.
Idk in this case he’s kinda just defending himself
His ability to sense the breach from multiple assailants from multiple angles and his overall handling of the situation and weapons proficiency displayed must of had military experience before the story
that shotgun blast shot, where it stays in him and he comes out, is a legit classic shot imo.
A masterpiece of a film!

Cook really sent the A-team hitmen to recover the money...
Haha can’t argue that, but at the same time that’s the brilliance of Gosling’s character as the driver and the unknown backstory. They had no idea who he really was and that he was such a violent and cold blooded guy. We as the audience don’t really even know which was a cool aspect of the movie.
Criminals are often overconfident. There's only so long that you can live outside of the law, above most people before it gets to your head.
The fact that the girls phone rang before they started shooting probably means that she was suppose to do something to distract him or give her some sort of cue to do something, it’s just the luck of the timing that the phone buzzed and the Driver picked it up, giving him a few seconds of reaction time.

Yeah you are right, typical gun toting lunatics, will say he was practicing his second amendment rights or some shit like that
Absolutely, even killing in defense of property usually just bumps it down to voluntary manslaughter. Of course, you've got to have cops that care -- and a D.A. who will prosecute (because frankly, a lot of vigilantes have broad support among the community and the whole thing will turn into a media circus). He handled the recoil of that shockwave pretty well.
And from this one little scene, Hotline Miami was born.
The way Driver acts in this scene tells me:
1. He's ex-military (knows exactly what to do in a split second)
2. It's been a while since he's been in a life-or-death situation (looks shocked after the fact)
I really wish the movie had explained why he's so good at killing people. It's odd because he says "all I do is drive", so you'd think that means he's spent his life avoiding combat.
Maybe he was a driver in the military.
@@ATHLETIC_FEMBOY Well yeah, maybe. There could be any number of explanations, we just don't get any. It's like the movie just makes him good at fighting because it's an action movie and the main character needs to be good at it, even though it's a contradiction of the premise that all he does is drive.
He's a stuntman. He is not accustomed to death and violence but he is very used to being in life or death situations and reacts as such. Quickly and does whatever he can to ensure his survival.
I heard an explanation that the character is on the Autistic spectrum leaning towards Sociopathy, hence the lack of dialogue he has during the whole of the film, he's certainly not overly expressive or emotive, even when he is bonding with his neighbour and her son.
The Blanche headsplosion is something else.

This is no affirmation of your misogyny. Plenty of males would have responded in similar way if violently presented with his advantages. There's no special feminine brain chemistry on display in this scene. The violence he showed her only confirmed that he was willing to hurt/torture her for the truth and her femininity and silence could no longer buy her any presumption of innocence or protection from his ruthless determination to survive. She responded logically according to the more favorable implied terms of is offer and was portrayed as clearly no stranger to being strong-armed by males to participate in their crimes and probably otherwise do their bidding...thats the world the character lived in. A world only a few showers away from the animal kingdom.
