Thanks so much for the review. I took delivery of mine yesterday and did my first commute this morning. I found your reviews really helpful and it was a big contributing factor in my decision to go with the RadCity.
I bought the RAD City about two months ago there was no visible damage in shipping and I took pictures. After 300 hundred miles the motor and back wheel presented an out of round wobble and crunching noises in the motor. RAD really came through after I sent them a video and replaced the back wheel assembly at no cost it was determined it was shipping damage YEA!
I decided on the Rad City just from the company web site. I took it out for the first time today and I really enjoyed it. It is super quiet and has the power. I'll be getting the RadRover next. To any who have not tried one you really should they are awesome.
Glad to see the flashing mode for the rear light! After many thousands of miles riding in Seattle and now in Tucson, I feel flashing (or pulse) mode for the lights helps drivers notice you during daytime riding - making your ride safer.
Bargain. And the Rad Wagon is like a pickup truck. If American cities made the roads safer for bikes and started developing away from the idea of freeways and sprawl and toward human sized neighborhoods, this kind of vehicle could help eliminate 90% of passenger vehicle miles driven. That is a gold mine of cost savings currently wasted on throwing tons of vehicle up and down the road all day at 90 feet per second.
I'm a big fan.got my city April 2018. Fast stable. Really helped me get some exercise. I commute 10 miles each way over some pretty good size hills. I do it in 35 minutes. Same as with car commuting. Nice new upgrades for 2019 but it is still same basic bike. Wish had slightly higher gear to be able to get better speed when going downhill. Good job rad.
I got my Rad City in August last year and i have almost 3000 Miles on it. No problems so far. I use it to deliver food on the side, give me an excuse to ride the bike all over Seattle.
I am in awe of how great value and well designed these bikes are. I will probably wait another year or two for a few more incremental improvements and also wait until I get a few more raises (I am a first term electrical apprentice) but when the time comes I am almost definitely going with radpower bikes. Hats off to everyone at the company!
@@ElectricBikeReview I ride fairly regularly for normal everyday stuff, though not to work. And I'll most likely use it for Uber eats deliveries on weekends. I really like the integrated rear rack as part of the frame along with a whole lot of other things about the rad city
18:50 the reason that the battery readout is 5 segment instead of 10 or percentile is probably because it's a dumb voltmeter. When you draw power from a battery, the voltage it outputs will drop proportional to its capacity, but it will recover after the load is removed. If you put too high a resolution on your voltmeter readout, it'll look like the battery suddenly tanks whenever you put on the throttle, and then power magically reappears when you let off.
I got mine in Feb 2019 high step NOT step through. It was in perfect condition upon arrival. This bike takes me everywhere I go. It has been through all the weather to hades and back and almost 2000 miles the bike is still going strong. For $1499.00 it is definitely one of the best investments I have ever made. A very comfortable ride the handlebars make that. I don't see a downside of anyone getting one of these bikes however it's good for you in exercise and very good for the environment and you don't has to put gas in it or change the oil so it saves a lot in out of pocket weekly cash. I don't have the baskets for it but I did purchase the front rack. You can put paniers on the rear rack works great for quick runs to the grocery store. This bike will turn heads and people will wish they had one and some will want yours so do not skimp on your security on this bike should you decide to get one. Not one thing bad can I say about the Rad City it's truly an awesome bike. In Louisville, Ky not the safest place to commute everyday to work but I manage. We could use more bike paths here but I still love riding this bike everyday. After almost 2 years of owning this bike I can highly recommend it and do. I honestly feel you will enjoy one also.
Value seems great and the design seems great. Looking forward to possibly picking one up on an upcoming sale. Excellent video quality and production too. Thanks for showcasing so many aspects of this bike and for bringing along company representatives that allowed you to be truthful while providing both pros and cons. Really stellar!
I appreciate you deconstructing some of the marketing and explaining the cons that offset some of the pros of the choices rad power made with this bike
pump and folding lock fits great under the downtube.best bike and errand vehicle i use.just broke 3000 miles on my 2018.all i did was upgrade the tires ,tighten the rear wheel spokes, and now i need brakepads.it cost me about a hundred dollars including tires,a spoke wrench, and charging for 18 months of use.i will buy another one in the future.
Props for dropping the price back down --- Once the snow melts I will be stopping into test ride -- my work commute will be changing in the coming months which will put close to 27 miles each way and that is going to take too much time without some help where I need to maintain my speed and this will keep my car/motorcycle at home as I do not want to drive to Seattle and buses are now absolutely horrible thanks to multiple transfers
Im 5'11", 265lbs, got my 19" Rad city bike last week. Ive put on 130 miles so far and Im loving it. I raise my seat very high to get a good leg extension while pedaling. The pedal assist & throttle are great. I havent gone past level 3 yet. I use this bike to commute but also like using it to get a workout, and that I do with my weight and the 63lbs of the bike weight. My only dislike is getting use to the drag I feel when getting to 20mph and the assist drops out as it should. Overall, im very pleased with it.
So "commercial use" is why Rad Power Bikes went with the gearless direct drive rear hub on the RadCity models. Does that mean the geared hubs used on their other Rad models can't survive everyday use for hours on end? Probably, I'm not sure but I think plastic gears are used in geared hubs. I wonder if the RadCity bike is a good choice for delivery work in more dispersed cities like areas of Los Angeles? My guess is a gas powered scooter is a better choice.
Finally seeing a review on the RadCity vs a ton of stuff on the Rad Rover makes me think unless I'm spending most of the the time riding in snow, sand, grass and dirt, I be better off with the RadCity. I like the idea of the regen and durability of the hub motor.
Was this shot in Seattle recently? My face is freezing off in Toronto and these guys are out in hoodies and light windbreakers. I had to wear thick gloves over thinner gloves and Court's complaining about rain. I'm bout to move.
Yeah, things have gotten a lot colder in parts of the country... I was "toughing it out" in the rain here, it was very cold at certain points, this was shot in early January 2019 and I took a couple of weeks to edit, write, post, and make some corrections because they rolled back the pricing to pre-tariff $1,499 very cool :)
Been in the 50's all winter in Seattle. I used to live in NH and the weather in Seattle may not be a tropical paradise but it beats New England any time of the year
Extra batteries cost $550 as of April 2019. With regard to the rear brake light, I could barely see it on the road test. Seems like it's just too small and not bright enough during the day. Maybe if was just the camera reducing the overall brightness of it. It'd be nice if e-bikes had directional signals. One stat I'd like to see is what the actual tested Wh/mi was for these bikes over the coarse of a day. It'd be great of the digital display kept track of that, since that's the true efficiency reading on the battery. Just guessing from the stats given on their website, it appears Radpower bikes use between 15 - 25 Wh/mi. For the price that's pretty good, but I'd really love to see more bikes hitting the 7 - 10Wh/mi range.
Some 1 try this and tell me if it will work. Get a top post car battery with a 400 Watt inverter, tie the battery down with some tie down strap on the bike rack. Will it keep the e bike charged at the same time you riding the e bike ??? What about using solar panels to keep the car battery charged ???
Hi Rory! My improvement would be hydraulic disc brakes... This would make braking easier and more consistent over time. RAD has used mechanical, which is easier to adjust aftermarket, but the new caliper position could make it easier for water and debris to drip down into the cable housing and cause some drag over time. It's a very minor thing, and I cannot say if it would even happen, but that's what I have heard others point out. Overall, they did an excellent job with the entire 2019 line :D
Improve by cutting weight. I like the bike but my $950.00 Canadian Thule (best in it's class) bike carrier can't support these two bikes. For that reason I have to rethink another brand ebike. Fortunately lots to choose from:) Thanks for your videos, and efforts Court.

Cort this is one weird thing about your videos. You bring owners/sellers in early and then they have to stand there silently... its awkward for them, and that awkwardness translates to the viewer
He did let the cat out of the bag a bit by saying that the direct drive motors are MORE durable. Durable than what hmmm? Perhaps the geared motors. Oops lol
August 19th, 2019. I have had my Radcity for 4 months, 200 miles. I get a loud “clunk” when going from coast to pedaling. The factory says this is normal with all their bikes and is due to the freewheel. None of the reviews I have read or listened to have mentioned this. I like everything else about the bike, but I could not recommend Radpower to my friends and relatives due to this annoying noise.
your helmet strap needs adjustment... These bikes are very attractive. If I didn't use a front rack, I'd move the light to one of the rack mounts instead of on the front wheel assembly. I like the sturdy racks.
I drove up to Seattle from Oregon and test drove four of their bikes and settled on the Rad City Step Through. I just got it yesterday. If you can go there or meet them at one of their traveling test drive places I highly recommend it. Great way to figure out what you want!
Wow this is really nice. I already has 2 ebike but still I like this one for my city drive. The price is really awesome compare to my second ebike that has only 500W / 10.8 Ah and the reason why it is more (double) because my frame is made of Carbon fiber which is so light in weight . I'm thinking of buying this one for my additional collection of ebike. Again thanks for the wonderful review that you just show and the reason why I bought my second ebike is also because of you also feature on your review. I trust your review and that the reason why I bought it. I am one of your fan. Keep on going and I'll keep on watching you.
great bike but damaged rear end spokes in shipping, they denied problem after sending several videos have 2100 miles in 6 months problem lays in rear wheel spokes they are bent over but not straight like regular wheels once you try to adjust these with spoke meter and stand they bend even more, replaced 6 spokes 3 broken and now going to buy additional 12 to straighten out wobble, have all equipment needed to adjust professionally, customer service is trained to deny any problems, not great as they claim, regenerative motor applies stress in both forward and coasting, will shop for a geared motor hub in 500 watt range with free wheel
Yeah, I feel like some of the older RAD models let you adjust top speed in the display settings. They don't currently have a Class 3 model because they all offer throttle mode. Maybe someday... the throttles are removable, so it could be an easy feature for them to do but maybe it's a liability thing?
@@dml5053 , yeah, I love Rad for their ebike advocacy but mid-drives are just better if you can afford them (unless you just never want to pedal). I have the Trekking S RX (thanks for the review a few years back, Court). I had my bike shop wire in a brighter light recently and I bought it (floor model) with a riser handlebar stem thingy. As a mid-priced option, all of the key things are there and you can upgrade the rest as they become annoying. But really, I love the Bosch 28 mph motor and the frame looks so cool (I still get comments) and is nicely stiff.
Great review. Cool bike. My friend had his stolen. So hesitant to get one. Although performance bikes can go from $3000 to $5000. Lots of sticky fingers out there.
@Swiit Lime This proliferation of ebikes are being driven from a handful of Chinese manufacturers. Walmart represents these suppliers at unreal prices. If you know this market and look at Walmarts catalog and 600 bucks is the value or less, because Walmart has a better line for 600 dollars.

I'm curious, which specific Ergon grips do you feel would be a match for this bike?
does the system have a 20mph governor which adds resistance at its top speed or doesn the motor just not assist after 20 ?
Top speed can b adjusted with adjustments from the control panel.

great bike but damaged rear end spokes in shipping, they denied problem after sending several videos have 2100 miles in 6 months problem lays in rear wheel spokes they are bent over but not straight like regular wheels once you try to adjust these with spoke meter and stand they bend even more, replaced 6 spokes 3 broken and now going to buy additional 12 to straighten out wobble, have all equipment needed to adjust professionally, customer service is trained to deny any problems, not great as they claim, regenerative motor applies stress in both forward and coasting, will shop for a geared motor hub in 500 watt range with free wheel
I wish most of these fucking reviewers would get to the fucking point. Too much wanting to hear themselves make mouth-noises. Good job.
wish it was a class 3
Yeah, I feel like some of the older RAD models let you adjust top speed in the display settings. They don't currently have a Class 3 model because they all offer throttle mode. Maybe someday... the throttles are removable, so it could be an easy feature for them to do but maybe it's a liability thing?
Get a Bosch. I love my Haibike. 😄 So nice to keep up with traffic and make the lights.
@@emma70707 I was actually looking at the trekking 9.0 thx for the comment
Picked up a stick there
Nice

20mph is not acceptable. This is not a serious commuter bike. Nobody makes a serious commuter bike. The only way to have one is to build one yourself.
Walmart has better bikes for 600 dollars.
