I have this image of a group of rangers mounted on their Giant Crabs, one says "Tonight, we ride!" And then they all take off sideways, cause well, crab walk....
"The Sidesteppers"
Looks like raves back on the menu, boys!
I was so glad to hear the giant crab mentioned; my favorite beast companion by far. I played a Halfling ranger with the sailor background that rode around on a giant crab once. With the crab grappling everything and the ranger stabbing it from up top, it worked out quite well. We started calling the crab Prawn Cena.
I did not see that last part coming. Brilliant.
TheScorpionStrike how could you tell where your crab was did people think you were magical as well when you were riding it?
I normally used Beast Bond in combat, and other than that kept him pretty close. He got some weird looks, but it was effective and there were stranger characters in that party for suspicious people to worry about. I was using the revised ranger, so he was more effective than the PHB version.
Whoa, are you me but smol? I'm playing a Half-Elf sailor ranger with a giant crab companion. I named him Crab Rangoon, though.
Did you teach him to wave his claw in front of his face?
With the giant wolf spider, my dm ruled that you could use their stealth when riding. 40ft climbing or walking movement is terrifying, but it gets far more so when you add +10 to stealth.
Question: Can a Barbarian with less than 10 Int count as a beast?
I think not. Cause a Bugbear would be a beast as well...
+Castle Well ur smallest score with the standard scores method is 8, so it would have to be lower than that. AND he's still a person, wtf?
You can mount one either way!
I was about to answer saying ask the dm but I’m 2 years late
No, but you could argue that a barbarian with a 3-4 Intelligence score might
Actually, what's nice about the Giant Badger is it's Burrow speed.
At 10ft of burrowing, you can essentially have a continuous quasi-Blink spell on you so long as you are on top of dirt. Just dig at 45 degree angles up 5 feet, shoot you're bow, down 5 feet, and now you can't be the target of spells that require you to be seen. Also, since you are going at angles, you can pop up at another square instead of the one you were just in in case the enemy starts to try and close in on you.
With the giant crab, after you defeat the BBEG, you can have the crab call its buddies and have a giant rave on the beach.
yall sleeping on the giant toad... best CC swallow move
Crab for the win especially if you arm them with a knife.
-Nerdarchist Dave
If you got motion sickness problems I feel bad for you son.
I got 99 problems but a giant poisonous snake ain't one.
Awesome!
5 constricting snakes are my problems... or antidepressants.
So proud! My wife's pick for her first (gnome) ranger animal was panther. No prior ranger experience.
No giant centipede? My drow ranger one that she let's crawl over her armor and lay there, and it acts like a 30ft radar. Also it is adorable. His name is Arturo. Arturo plora
God Dammit... sigh. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthropleura
You're getting all "centipedal"...
I knew someone that had a ranger with a komodo dragon. He just reskined the panther, and gave it a poison bite attack.
I just got a mental image of a seaside gnome ranger in leather armor riding a massive ironbound crab and either shooting poisoned blowgun needles at everything or rapidly loading and firing a hand crossbow mounted to the saddle. You guys give me lots of laughs!
Using a Giant Spider as a companion, it'd almost seem like a crime to NOT use it to create traps and camouflage with it's webs.
I can't believe you did not mention Pteranadons! They are medium size and would give a small ranger a flying mount. They have 13 hp and flyby attack.
It's great fun. I use one as a "Great Hawk" with my Halfling Monk/Ranger. :-)
Woah. Great idea right there. I will definetely have some pteranodon riding rangers as an encounter in the near future.
That could be a fun encounter as well. Group moves through a canyon valley and gets harassed by a goblin group flying on those mounts.
I'd never considered the crab, thats a damn good idea
One of my rangers made a lot of use with the Raven because of mimicry
Pssh everyone knows the best Beast Companion is the Mule.
only if it is on the level of a death donkey
My mule hauls dragon corpses with my knight/ranger so that I can skin it and make white dragon scale mule armor. Not to mention he's a good mount. And he likes belly rubs.
What do you want a Mule for when you have your party's Barbarian
"I think we might be stretching the ´Riding the snake´ part"...
Sex never comes up
Give me a grappling gorilla. Opposable thumbs for the win, mammal intelligence. It'll be like having another character.
Sweet i found this while I was looking for more info on a giant frog mount so glad to see the toad
i really like the conten you putting out the last months , thank you guys really appreciate it
You are very welcome.
-Nerdarchist Dave
Great vid, my ranger player will really appreciate this one!
You forgot that the Giant Poisonous Snake also has 10' reach, that's very useful allowing it that opportunity attack coming in.
It’s all about the GOAT, just rams stuff and ain’t no darn bandits dragons or lichs, evil enough to kill a goat
I would go for the Pteradodon especially when playing as a goblin. They have flyby and the perception skill my primary goal with this is to have a flying mount. My goblin would ride this prehistoric flying monster into battle, raining fire from the sky.
Did you check out the dimetrodon in Volo’s? It has 19 hp 12 ac and does a 2d6+2 damage and only 1/4 cr
I personally prefer birds of prey so the blood hawk is my favorite; flies and has adv. on perception checks, has pack tactics.
In love with idea of a gnome riding something like a dire badger
My favorite was the giant owl, works amazingly for my gnome ranger as their mount and the perceptive nature of the owl combines well with its flyby attack.
Giant Owl is Large so it cannot be companion.
Yeah but have you considered a stirge that latches onto an enemy, next turn uses bonus action "help" to give you combat advantage while also dealing extra damage at the start of its turn. Its HP gets a huge boost as well.
If you respect the size category of the revised ranger in Tasha the flying beast has to be small and the flying snake is tiny so it can't be one. But it's perfect for a familiar.
If you want something simple yet effective, the pony has a 2d4+2 hoof attack with +4 to hit. This becomes 2d4+4 and +6 as a beastmaster.
Giant Toad is Large Size. Also, Giant Badger was nerfed, but it has one awesome feature none of the others have. A Burrow speed!!
As a small race beast masters mount, IMHO the 12 best to worst are:
#1 Pteranodon > #2 Giant Crab OR Giant Wolf Spider OR Giant Poisonous Snake > #3 Cave Badger > #4 Panther OR Giant Frog > #5 Dimetrodon > #6 Fastieth OR Wolf > #7 Deep Rothe Or Boar
Honorary mention to worst mounts: #0 Hyena > #-1 Goat > #-2 Deer > #-3 Vulture
What about PTERANODON?
What about putting mount armour to the Companion?
Currently use an ape with revised ranger mechanics... he's pretty awesome. What you need to do is make sure you use him in melee to get the best out of him. He once got into a fight with a gorgon and made his saving throw against her stone gaze. He bit one of her snakes off and she died (she had taken a fair bit of damage already to be fair though).
Nice to see someone else who respects the giant crab!
My favourites builds are halfling with valture or pterodactyl. Both have flying and double or more speed.
I love it!!! I have a paladin with a giant crab! And it's pale white! It's a beauty. The only difference is, mine has one claw that's super huge and the other claw smaller than normal (like a real Pacific species of that type of crab). The pincer damage of the big one is massive of course, but it's more to make it unique. Of course, it's called ONE claw. :)
Hey guys, thanks for the video... Did the revised ranger book ever come out? Fixing bm? Let me know, thanks.
Riding Horse in barding, great mount for medium size, 60 speed, trample does plenty o' damage, works nice for mounted combat,
it woulb be great if you could show picture of those beasts and the page in wich book to find them...
Great ideas tho! i'm lvl 2 ranger and i'm really asking myself what beast to choose..! thanks!
My idea is get a Snow Owl (or other large bird) and be proficient with the Alchemist Kit or Tinker’s Kit and have it drop things like Alchemist Fire or bags of Cantrips on the enemy
Path finder here. In pathfinder ranger pets are selected from the druid lists and they are all small and seem more like familiars to me. I play a druid on occasion who has a moose. Which is awesome because he charges on the moose while using a lance.
I have two questions for you when it comes to DND 5. What level do you like to start the players at? And at what level do you start giving out magic arms and armor?
Idward I like to start at 3-5th level and I give out minor items soon after the game starts
3-5, but I give out minor magic items as early as 2 if I have a reason to start a game at that low of a level. Just keep them individual and special and don't flood them.
I would use halfling ranger with a giant owl if it was allowed
Gravity Man I want a giant owl mount for my ancients paladin. dm said no. so now I'm planning six levels bard for magical secrets conjure animals. muahaha!
Havok It’s allowed to have pteranodon or giant vulture as a beast companion
@@havok8570 I know I'm super late to the party, but why not just the summon steed from paladin, it's perfect!
Any suggestions for a mountain dwarf cavalier? I'm thinking of using a blink dog lol
When i add my proficiency?
Every time my companion attack?
It deals 1d6 piercing + extra damage +3d6 poison damage+ extra damage?
Or 1d6 piercing damage + 3d6 poson danage+ extra damage?
You guys are such nerds. How very wonderful!
No, their NERDACHISTS!
I bent the rules a bit and allowed my player to have a Guard Drake as a beast companion. The little blue bosh'tet is awesomely thematic: Eragon style. She's trying *really* hard to get the thing a pair of wings. Quest-based application of the Dragonborn Racial Feats incoming.
Realize this is old now, but with the revised Ranger getting to add their Proficiency to the animal's armor it makes some of them insane with Dodge. I can run my spider in and web something, attract attention and just keep using dodge for like 23 AC.
Can companions hav companions? example ranger befriends wild boar pack. Eventually being able to use boar mob charge! Or use "nuisance" to pilage fields or markets if someone needs a distraction.
In my campaign with my lizardfolk I managed to tame an ambush drake.
Went well with my stealthy barbarian/ranger
If you were going to make a mounted archer halfling spider rider, how do you think you'd handle it classwise? All ranger or a bit of multiclassing? Maybe some battle master or assassin rogue?
Are you able to use Unearthed Arcana to make the character? if so, I'd look at 3 lvls of Arcane Archer for the magic effect arrows, and a mix of standard/UA ranger and rogue levels to sneak attack with the bow.
what do you think about the dire wolf as a companion?
I really wish there was Closed Captions or cutscenes that write the name of each suggestion.
Its would be ok to ride a snake. If u look closer at it, only the body move, the head stay straight looking for the direction ;)
I think that the ranger might be too heavy to ride right up by the head
Hey quick question, are all of these viable 5th edition animal picks? I know in alot of vanilla D&D or videogames you get pretty generic picks like wolves or bears, but these beasts sound awesome! Thanks
The ones we listed as our top picks are legal for adventure league. The Wild Compendium has even more critters than just the ones in the Monster Manual if that is what you are asking. Anything not in the MM wouldn't be adventure league legal.
-Nerdarchist Dave
Thanks! Playing a Ranger seemed kinda boring to me before, but definitely want to try a Beast Master Spider Rider now haha!
Nerdarchy Any beasts in Volo's are also AL legal.
@@Nerdarchy New player with a Ranger that just hit level 3. I watched this video made all my decisions based on using a flying snake. I return to the game and the DM asks if it is a legal companion. After looking it up he decides I would need to go on a quest to a jungle to get this companion since it is not common in the wilderness where we are. Is this normal? It seems like most of the suggestions made would be considered exotic.
These are well-selected, but in terms of effectiveness as a tandem, the boring old wolf is still hard to beat. If it attacks together with the ranger, it will do so at advantage every time (because of pack tactics), dealing a respectable 2d4+2 damage per round. And if knocks an opponent prone (which it will do about half the time on a hit), the ranger will be attacking at advantage also, once the beast gets its own action. Wolves don't have great AC or hit points, but if you are operating together against a single target, it will not get attacked that often anyway.
It is true that the wolf is hard to beat. Especially if you want to play a skirmish fighting ranger
Wolf + Ranger/Battlemaster + Melee + Riposte + Trip Attack = Too Much Fun
I might be confused so forgive me if I'm wrong but the giant poisonous snake does 3d6 poison damage, and the flying snake does 3d4 but in the video it says that the flying snake does more poison damage. I'm just confued
a giant snake's poison damage requires a failed save (the target must make a DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 10 (3d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.). The flying snake just deals 3d4 poison, no save
would choosing a humanoid from the MM unbalance the subclass, Ive been thinking on this a lot lately for a "ranger and his trusty sidekick" type build
Cool idea. Not sure but as long as it stayed at the same power level as a beast companion maybe see if your DM will let it slide
Technically, Panther will not be able to use its bite after pouncing, as you can only command ranger companion to use movement and an action, not the bonus action. At my table I overlook it, but players might get in trouble at AL games :(
I think that with the Unearthed Arcana: The Ranger Revised, the companion acts alone as if it is another character you control. So it gets its own initiative placement and the Bonus and Reaction actions too.
Taras Basiuk it can use the extra attack they revised it in the official version now
🦀 is the clear winner. In addition to Daves list, he forgot the 🦀 best feature. If the party is in a starve situation, the 🦀 tastes the best!
Lava breathing Bullette. As a mount jaws theme plays loudly shaking the earth. Duhduhduhduh duhduh.
What do you think of the vaulter?
Im seeing this way too late! I have a ranger and my DM is leaving me the choice to choose another archtype like ebast master since the website didnt allowed me because I need to pay for the player book. I have "tammed" a Owlbear but is a difficult relationship jaja. Beast master will help with that?
I’m surprised that pteranodon wasn’t in the list especially for small characters to ride and rain attacks from above with sharpshooter. Be a Halfling from Chult
My boar companion has killed more men than my Half-orc. And that charge is REALLY useful to give advantage as long as the creature fails of course
Giant crab can grapple, but the giant frog can restrain.
What about the war turtle?
In #ABardsTale, our gnome ranger CliqClaq has a houdah mounted on his giant crab, making him basically a turret on a tank.
I mean the standard Beast Master when looked at on its own is not that bad but the other archetypes overshadow it so much. The biggest issue is you have to give up some of your actions for the beast to do anything. However if you think of your beast as your weapon then it is not the worst. Take the wolf. It does 2d4+4 damage where your bow or sword does 1d8+DEX/STR mod. Basically the same damage output potential with a higher floor (6 minimum) and depending on your stats a higher ceiling. And when you get extra attacks you just shoot once with your bow and have your wolf bite once. The real problem is they made Hunter too strong compared to Beast Master that unless you just want to play a Beast Master then any ranger would be silly to not go Hunter. I would like to play one some day but I will have to wait because the two games I am in right now even if I rolled a new character really do not need any Rangers as one already has a ranger in it and I am the only full caster that can heal and the other game already has someone with a custom pet class in it.
Imagine of the Dc abilitys of the beasts increased as you leveled up bc without them they would be a lower cr for the more unique beasts
Is it true that if I have a ranger who multiclasses with druid I could get a beast companion through the druid class
I'm a druid in my campaign with a companion. I just wrote it in my backstory and the dm gave me a nerfed animal companion bonus from ranger so it's possible.
I may be wrong, but a snake's head doesn't really move from side to side, the body does. If you're riding behind its head, you should be fine.
Dont amphibious snakes move in water the same way they do on land? So much for riding it. :3
Well a snakes head doesn't have to move side to side its the back and middle portions that do.
I imagined that the snake can't carry 40+ lbs on its head but hey it is a fantasy game so why not?
Nate the Nerdarch I guess it depends on the size of the snake. They can be really strong but i think a snake big enough would also be really long which you'd probably want to take into account.
But yeah it's fantasy so.
And make sure you can get off before a strike attack. Be emberising for your seat to just disappear out from under you.
The swimming species of crab is Blue Crabs.
Do flying snakes in d&d 5e have wings? Or do they look like the real world flying snake?
wings
The ape. I got my DM to let me reduce its INT to 3 and raise it's STR (the STR was to distract from my plan). He made my ranger character have a wife, so I got her to be a strong druid. She then performed "Awaken" on my ape. So now he's fully sapient. I was then trying to convince the dm to let him be a fighter (he would have the benefits of the UA ranger and just be strong as hell). But then we killed the campaign with a Deck of Many Things.
N Raah When you find a deck of many things you give it to the character being played by someone who's a magician in real life. lol
Damn you I want to landsurf on a snake now
Or why not a rule for cr0 beasts being able to become a swarm with your nature magic in combat so they are cr 1/4. Like having a squirl would be nice
If you do a baby Phoenix with a cr of 1/4 you will have a cr4 soon
So what is the Compendium of Wild Beasts?
A deck of cards that have different beasts on them, kickstarter and links are in the description
With the flying snake, it shouldn't be on your shoulder if there's room up above the fight or you're facing flying foes. Swoop down, bite, and fly out of reach
Please, people... Drizzt is not a Ranger. He has no spells, no favourite enemy AND no animal companion. He HAS mastery of blades, mastery dual-wielding, mastery bow and an Ancient Artifact (Figurine: Panher). I have never encountered him using any spell-like effects other than [Faerie Fire] and [Globe of Darkness) (Innate Drow abilities in AD&D) plus in "Homeland", he was granted [Levitate] from his house insignia. Guenhwyvar is a spirit who can only stay at his side for 6-8 hours per day, she is about twice the size of any normal panther and has human-level or above intelligence. She also has a very well developed sense of humour. The only really rangery thing about him is that he worships Mielikki.
How about his tracking abilities, it doesn't come up too often but he is pretty good at following things and surviving in nature. That sound Rangery?
True, but Survival is a Cross-Class skill. Also he frequently uses Guen as recon.
True enough, I think he's got enough Ranger stuff to qualify just with his bow and sword skills plus the nature stuff, plus the whole thing of him being called a Ranger by official sources.
He is based on a D&D character who is a Ranger. Every edition has had an official version of his as Ranger class.
Riding the snake ehh? Hehehe
Hey we did not laugh or smile once, we were professional.
Video Game Play By Nerdarchy, it was very professional 👍🏽. But I wonder how much you laughed behind the scenes?
What about a Lion Beast Companion?
Giant frog+jump+long strider= 2 60ft jumps a turn
dire wolf,grizzly bear,riding horse,cougar,bobcat
I think I'd pick a blink dog
You said the Giant Wolf Spider can sling webs, but it can't. Giant Spider has Web but the Giant Wolf Spider does not.
My favorite animal in the game is the Owlbear. I really want to make a ranger that uses one as a battlemount
nah, the greatest beast companion is obviously the t-rex. best beast in the game.
But you can't have T-rex as companion.
says who?
The rules. But I quess if your DM would let you have T-rex as animal companion it would be awesome.
lol, that's not in the rules. as far as the rules go, if you can tame it you can keep it.
Are we talking about the same ruleset?
Honesty I think the vulture is the best because halflings/gnomes can ride them
why not giant lizard?
Flying snake yeah
Sneks! Why'd it have to be Sneks!
Because they are terribly awesome. Nice avatar choice by the way
Lol thanks!
Pre Corona fun with unwashed beards!! 😀😀😀
