I was part of a news crew that went there while covering an event in Vegas, and we got as far as the sign indicating lethal force can be used. As we approached in our rental car, we saw the dust trail of the camo guy's jeep above the hills as it snaked its way toward us. We saw the camo guy take his place at the top of a hill and proceeded no farther than the sign. We did have a great time and better footage at the nearby Little Ale'Inn restaurant. Highly recommend thst place.

Whether or not it was an “accident,” this is how ALL encounters with law enforcement should be! Base security was cool, the sergeant from the Sheriff’s Office was respectful, the duo acted more than appropriately, hell, handshakes all around before they took off! Everyone did their job, but without any overkill. I enjoyed the interaction!

Once you get into the mountain it's pretty narrow, rocky and rained out. You certainly don't need 4x but good clearance and good tires are a smart bet. My 2x Tundra with All Terrain tires has no problems.

No one "accidentally" drives three miles into the Groom Lake installation. I'm sure they were monitored with follow-up visits whether they realized it or not. People have had their homes raided and electronics permanently confiscated for taking aerial photos of the base from a distance.

I think the fact that there are probably a dozen or so people every day trespassing or getting too close in that area and there is a distinct lack of violent incidents despite that, I'd say this is a testament to how keen they are on this NOT turning violent. I don't think the cop is military, nor is that area part of the actual base. It's probably a sort of DMZ long before the fence only for authorized personnel which would include local LEOs for trespassers like this so they can be carried off rather than shot-on-sight or held within the base. How does a county sheriff have any jurisdiction to write tickets on federal property? County doesn't have jurisdiction on federal property just like feds don't have any jurisdiction on public property.
They don't. What happens when a trespasser is detected and detained they call the Lincoln County Sheriff to pick them up and issue the citation. That is if they military personal doesn't suspect anything other then simple trespass. If they suspect sabotage or espionage they will be detained and charged by the feds. These two idiots got very lucky. It is common for the military side to confiscate all video equipment, including drones, to see if any sensitive or unauthorized pictures were taken.

Give the judge some leeway to determine if it was an honest mistake or some selfish prick looking for clicks. Of course their names should also be ran through the FBI databases and a record of the incident entered into it.
It is highly unlikely this incident was an honest mistake. They were not on some worn, seldom used 4x4 spur, they were one a main road that is well maintained. Which means that there was plenty of signs..
Like I said, if it was an honest mistake, then fine and dandy. There are a lot of stupid people out there.

How does a county sheriff have any jurisdiction to write tickets on federal property? County doesn't have jurisdiction on federal property just like feds don't have any jurisdiction on public property.

They don't. What happens when a trespasser is detected and detained they call the Lincoln County Sheriff to pick them up and issue the citation.
That is if they military personal doesn't suspect anything other then simple trespass. If they suspect sabotage or espionage they will be detained and charged by the feds.
These two idiots got very lucky. It is common for the military side to confiscate all video equipment, including drones, to see if any sensitive or unauthorized pictures were taken.
