I love old Eurovision. I'm a 16-year-old teenager living in the US, but I've fallen in love with these old songs. Tom Pillibi, Nous Les Amourex, Dansevise, Poupee-du-cire Poupee-du-son, Nygammal Vals, Knock Knock, Waterloo, Ding-A-Dong, Un Deux Trois, are just some of my favorite songs ❤.
I remember Mary winning Opportunity Knocks, (a talent show from the 1960s and 70s) on UK TV, Twiggy saw her on the show, and phoned up Paul McCartney, the rest is history, McCartney, signed Mary for Apple records, produced her big hit, 'Those Were The Days' , and wrote the song 'goodbye' for her, she was a fantastic singer and a very good looking girl. The 60s was a fantastic time for music, lam so glad I lived through those years.
The first time I was allowed to watch the Eurovision Song Contest … made an ever lasting impression … when both Dana and Mary sang so beautiful … we're 50 years later now … thank you Dana and Mary for this memory of a lifetime !
I agree, Dana and Mary were fantastic. Being Welsh myself, I remember it being a great year for the Celtic nations musically, on the world stage. There is not enough Celtic influence in British music these days, sadly. It has such lovely melody and harmonies in keys that make a change from the usual stuff.
I have the same experience ! This was my first live Eurovision Songcontest and it had a deep impact in my childhood ( being 10 years old ). My favourite song was Waterman by the Dutch Hearts of Soul but their performance was disappointing. I must have wept when these girls of Indonesian origin ( same as mine ) did not win at all. Looking back years later Dana was the perfect winner, Mary second best.
Beautiful and talented ,a rare combination. Listening to her after all these years, have brought back all old memories, associated with the song and the pretty Mary Hopkins. What a velvety voice , so smooth and silky .
She has the voice of an angel. I was in fourth grade in the early 1970's when this song came out. I hadn't heard this song in decades until RUclips came along.
And a very good edit it is - a visibly shocked Dana as she thought all along that Ms Hopkin would win but as the fella said - them's the breaks, folks...
I was 16 when this came out. Loved it then and at age 65 living on the other side of the world love it even more. I didn't realize this was a Euro Song entry. Love Mary's powerful voice. Beautiful! Great audio and video quality. Thank you for posting this. Appreciated!!
This song by Mary Hopkin has just came into my head. I haven't heard it for a few years and I only know of her singing this and those were the days. She always reminded me of my late mother as well. I'm so glad you kept in the programmes intro bit where they introduce her and that bit of the voting results at the end, as this has made it doubley fantastic to watch. I just don't know why 17 people would give it a thumbs down.
I remember being in a childhood friend's dad's car travelling home from an airshow and listening to the Eurovision Song Contest on the radio - it was brilliant being 8 in 1970...!
We didnt get this rendition in Australia in 1970 - or other UK singers as there was some sort of dispute going on at the time. This was performed beautifully by local artist Liv Maessen as I recall.
Dana from Ireland i love her music fell in love with her fairly tale, al kinds of everything, beautiful long hair so sweet great records i miss the 1970'S so much and school days has well
There is something so pure, so nostalgic and awesome about how things were just a few years ago. We lost a precious thing we really didn't appreciate: INNOCENCE.
I remember hearing this song whIle on a hunting trip with my grand dad in the early 70s. I really liked it but didn''t know who the singer was. Mary Hopkin had such a nice voice.
Great song, fabulous singer and whether you liked it or not, this was when the ESC was about the song and not politics etc etc and didn't include Russia and Australia. Geography was never my strongest subject at school but the clue's in the title - European Song Contest. Ah well!!
Yes, but Israel joined in 1973. Here's some more info I found...."THE RIGHT to participate in the contest is contingent on membership of the European Broadcasting Union. The statutes of the Union limit membership "primarily ... to organisations in the European Broadcasting Area. This area, as defined by the International Telecommunications Union, extends from the Atlantic to the meridian 40 deg E. It is bounded on the south by the 30th parallel." Jerusalem, the official headquarters of Israeli Television, is 35 deg E, and on the 32nd parallel. This definition also allows for participation by Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, the Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. Israeli participation deters these countries on a point of principle, although Morocco did enter in 1980 when Israel withdrew for Passover."...interesting....
It would have been great if both songs All Kinds Of Everything / Knock Knock Who's There.. was a tie it would have been joint winners what a great result that would have been..
Hard to believe it was half a century ago , you needed real talent back then unlike today when computer software can produce a generic and soulless sound that attempts to make up for the performers lack of ability. Songs were much simpler and had so much charm and innocence about them along with an original melody , the use of actual instruments and meaningful lyrics , sadly these days the show is tediously long with the same countries voting for each other regardless of how good the song is and it's more 'style' over substance , predictable dance routines and banal repetitive beats that is so ubiquitous in music nowadays. Thankfully we don't take Eurovision too seriously as i was looking forward to the UK coming last this year thanks to Brexit !.
I guess this is what caught Paul McCartney’s attraction, as he was looking for THAT VOICE for a song he had in mind for years. What a great talent scout.
It was actually top English model Twiggy who was responsible, as she rang Paul & told him he needed to watch UK TV'S "Opportunity Knocks" to see Mary. McCartney then remembered a 400 year old Russian folk song that he saw a duo singing in a small club, so he paired them together & voila! The Seekers' massive hit "The Carnival Is Over" was also an English translation & interpretation of an old Russian folk song called "Stenka Rasin" ruclips.net/video/44wzqWQxHpQ/видео.htmlsi=BLbl_6Ll8kb6tLJW
The song that should have won that night.A deceptively simple song but perfectly pitched for this competition and one of this countries finest ever singers.
Dana's song was better and she was cuter. Both great songs. But somehow too many La la la's in Marys song. If they had of worked on that part of the song, she might have won.
I was only 10 when this was our UK Eurovision entry. To think Mary was only 20 then. She totally should have won that year but was robbed as it's a much better song than Dana's in my opinion. It happens to be the very first single I ever bought though so it's kinda special for me. Everyone remembers their first record purchase don't they? Of course Mary went onto marry the brilliant producer Tony Visconti. Mid 70's & my favourite band was Sparks. Mary sang a beautiful version of one of their big hits 'Never turn you back on mother earth' & Tony also produced Sparks' '76 album 'Indiscreet'. Good to know they both have good taste anyway. Just a bit of useless information there....LOL.
Well, this brings back sweet memories! As a kid I was glued to the tv to watch the Eurovision Songfestival! This one was hosted by the Netherlands, right? Thanks for sharing!
Yeah... pretty sure I read her stating that she didn't like it at all...but that shows what a consummate professional she is....you couldn't tell from her performance 😁

Yes and deserved her win
@@edmundpower1250 Sadly, she didn't win tough, Dana from Ireland won, Mary came second.
@@LeonThe4th oh that's true thanks
She won as far as I am concerned, had a lasting effect on me as a nipper
If Mary sang Those were the Days, she would have won. Wrong song choice IMO.
Those were the days my friend, lovely memories thank you Mary love.
Absolutely love Mary Hopkin. I remember my mum singing her songs. 😢 She should've won.... Mary, not my mum.
@@rw8733 No Don't agree. , strong entry from Mary, but Dana won it on cuteness alone. Dana's song was better too.
Another great melody with the fabulous voice of Mary Hopkin!
I had forgotten what an amazing singer she was. Fabulous!
She is beautiful and has nice voice
Her voice is more than just nice . it is Heaven sent .
Superb!
Nice ????
Bloody hell, I can remember a girl singing this in school in the 70s. Where has the time gone? Don't think I've heard it in over 45 years.

How different Eurovision song contest was in those early days! You could hear a number of decent pop songs and adorable singers like Mary Hopkin.
A singing angel in times of real music
I’d forgotten how talent and beautiful Mary Hopkin was. I rather watch this type of Eurovision th@n the trash they do on it now.
I agree. It's very bad now.
Agree fully. 100%. 🌹🌹🌹🌹
Well said. Nowadays there is only a screaming, no singing anymore. Those melodies are timeless ❤️
Absolutely true
Omg I watched this with my mum! Aww, so nostalgic for me hearing it again after many years.
I like this singer Mary Hopkin, she sings good songs, l remember well the song "Those were the days "
What a perfect Clip with everything - and this sharp Audio...
Thanx sooo much, Leon..

@@rw8733 lovely. If only we could all go back to those happy times and re-live them again eh. I know I would.
Beautiful...makes me smile and forget about stuff!
They played Mary's hit songs almost everyday in Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur when I was a 19 year old living there. Wonderful time of British pop music.
Yes. Leslee. Apart from "Those were the days", there was both this song and "Goodbye" on our radio in those days!
@@pctan3312 the era of the Beatles, Cliff Richard, Lulu, Cilla Black, Hollies, the list goes on. What a wonderful time it was.

Mary hopkin a true lady so wonderful to dana who was really her competitor in the contest
She was a fantastic singer, and in any other year that song almost certainly would have won.
beautiful lady beautiful voice
What ever happened to Mary a very good song it will be on my mind now🎉🎉😊😊
She retired from singing & public life a long time ago....but....we still have the songs, records, CD's & fab memories of her talented career.

They were better times 😢
Wow...She is amazing...then and now.
Beautiful, really takes me back!
Time when Eurovision show REAL music...
And it was fun, fair and not politically biased, with little or no favouritism!
And now it’s a joke, strategic political voting and fake results.
Let's give a mention also for the song writers. John Carter is one of my heroes from that era.
The time when the UK had a chance to win
MrDirtytricksss Before it all became political
My god she’s gorgeous, voice of an angel
I have not heard this in decades...had no idea it was from Eurovision...or from her. I lived in West Germany...it was probably all over the radio.

i was 7 when this aired. magical. simpler more innocent and hopeful times.
Beautiful voice, and the street scene's from an era when England was..English. I wish I could have seen it.
