6:15 it's good practice to clean off the old grease on the bushing for the clutch and repack with new (synthetic) grease - I use Mobil 1 - grease the bushing inside and out so the bolt has lubrication too. Take the time to grease the exposed clutch cable and barrel in this area. I love my MZS short clutch (on my 2021 XSR900) but i did take the time to dremel out the underside where the clutch cable barrel goes into - it's razor sharp and can over time shear into the cable from inserting and removing the cable. I dremeled it out just enough so it's not sharp. It does strip away the anodized finish but it's underneath so it's not noticable at all. Clutch is butter smooth operation after that - just be sure to not overtighten the 10mm locknut so the lever doesn't bind.
Yes, locking up front brakes is a common issue with these levers. The issue is that the groove on the brake lever is too shallow, that is a design issue, the only way to fix that is to grind it down some more to allow the piston to fully extend out. They only acknowledge the brakes locking up in the manual to cover their ass. In case someone dies from it locking up, they'll blame it on improper installation. I suggest to stay away from them.
Well theses levers are 30 bucks asv levers are 200 bucks so if your a mechanic like myself or at least handy with a die grinder i prefer the 30 dollar levers it doesn’t feel so bad on track day to snap a 30 dollar lever if you happen to go for a slide just my 2 cents not saying your wrong or I’m right because your absolutely correct there is a known issue with some of these causing front brake malfunctions so the user should be aware of this problem but it is a rather easy fix for the price difference after that is out of the way there really isn’t much of a difference to ever persuade me to wanna spend the extra money for a big name lever
The reason these lock up is because the bevel inside moves around. Unlike stock that’s stationary. Most people don’t put pison into groove. They just install as is. Owned these for a year of daily driving in FL.
Not shallow at all. Actually a lot more grit less than stock levers. The bevel inside I’m assuming steel. Isn’t fixed until piston is in groove. It allows for an aggressive pitch change when selecting 1-6. Most look at bevel before installing and flip over to install. That can turn it. Visually line up indent to piston and you will only remove for painting after they start to fade.
f3rnandope the reason to grease any pivot point is to cause less resistance in movement. If you don’t clean and reapply grease to pivot points it effects how well your lever will actually work when you pull it.
Thank you! I just bought the blue and black ones of these for my 2021 MT-07. I got them in the mail today 7/8/2022 and I will be putting them on tonight. Thank you again for also pulling over and letting us see the finished product after install. The gold forks and levers are fu@kin money dude!!
See brake lever review on STG ... same levers caused a riders brake to lock up .... you get what you pay for.... reliability/ function waaaaay more important than how pretty they look or texture of the cardboard package
Just got these. Didn’t need the washers as the lever has no wobble. The connection on the lever is all that wobbles. Or lever to lever not mount to lever. If you understand what I mean.
In case anyone is wondering: if you hit your other fingers when pulling in clutch lever you can just change the biting point to be further away so you dont need to oull the lever in as much.
The clutch side seems to be quite long, like mine that arrived today. I expected it to be shorty levers as in 1 or maybe 2 finger control, but I actually hit my pinky and ring finger when doing a 2 finger pull on the clutch. With the stock ones I have that too, but the bad thing about these longer shorties is that even on setting 6 the clutch doesn't fully dissengage when I do a 2 finger clutch pull. With the stock ones even on setting 3 I could use 2 fingers and have the other just slightly squished between the handle, but still would work. Not sure if its the CB1000R and shorty levers but I'll be changing back to stock very soon. cheers bud
Just watched a video from sports bike track gear and he had a story of a customer with the same levers and his brakes started locking up. Things like brake levers are very important to the functionality of a bike and not worth buying the cheapest you can get. They probably put that warning there bc they have a problem with brakes locking up bc of their levers
I have the same color scheme bike, and i had to get the MZS shorty golds too just cuz the gold forks. FZ-09 smashin in Long Beach. I heard about the problems, I just keep those pockets and bolts greased with some loctite on the nuts and no problems, I think MZS has a nice product for the price.
Ik you comment is old but i think tbh they are great for the price. Installed mine and they function just fine. Theyre nice and tight with no play, clutch is smooth, brake works, all in all good levers

i have essentially the same bike as him but the XSR900 version. The MSZ (on the clutch side) was ever so slightly thicker than the stock lever (but still not thicker than the bushing which is important). Because of this, less lateral play once mounted. I had no need for any spacers/washers on the clutch side.
i got some similar levers, but they didn't come with instructions and I can't identify that faulty part on my pair of levers. anyone have any suggestions?

If your breaks lock up let go and reapply the break more cautiously. And I have these saved my ass more than enough times. 😌

that is true, but still there is only so much room to play when trying to fit the lever between your fingers... shorter lever is the way IMO

Did the brake lever lock up ever?
No ..abs kicked in yo
Would have been good see on the actual lever what the instructions meant by "copper bolt" etc.
